LEMMON DROPS: After 38 years, the end is near for Elmer’s Flea Market Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the start of football season:

• The official name is Elmer’s Trading Post, but I suspect

most people call it Elmer’s Flea Market. I’ve never been to the flea market, which operates on weekends, but all you have to do is drive past it on southbound U.S. 1 (south of Oslo Road) to see how popular it is. The end is near for Elmer’s, though. Its last day will be Aug. 30. Elmer Arendas started the flea market in 1977, but Pete and Mary Lou Marini have owned it since ’86. (Pete and Mary Lou had two partners until 2005.) They kept Elmer’s as the name of the business. The land on which Elmer’s sits is owned by the nearby Toyota dealership. It bought the land from the Marinis and their partners in ’05. Then, after Pete and Mary Lou split with the partners, they leased the land from the Toyota dealership.

“It’s been a handshake lease,” Pete Marini said. On July 20, Bob Quaile, owner of the auto dealership, called Pete to let him know Elmer’s will need to vacate the premises by the end of August. Pete said there were no hard feelings. Russ Lemmon “Bob said it was time,” he said. “We feel blessed we got 10 years longer than we thought we would.” Mary Lou admits she has shed a few tears the past couple of weeks. “It’s like losing your family,” she said. Mike Bushman, who owns Recycled DVDs, called Elmer’s “the launching ground” for his business at 937 Seventh Ave. in Vero Beach. He still sells DVDs on Sundays at Elmer’s. “I did the flea market for about 3 years before I made the

jump,” he said. “As much as I hated getting up at 5 a.m., packing and unpacking the truck, and standing in the hot sun all day, I really enjoyed the comradery shared between the vendors, and talking with the customers about their favorite movies.” On Aug. 8, Pete and Mary Lou Marini will celebrate their 56th anniversary. There’s a photo of them standing next to their food truck on LemmonLines.com. It’s a subtle name change, but going from Vero Beach Municipal Airport to Vero Beach Regional Airport is a great move for the future. What’s the deal with Bank of America closing the drivethru lanes at its local branches? I tried to get the rationale behind the move. Not surprisingly, I was directed to a corporate spokesperson in New York. Closing the drive-thru lanes is just another example of a decision made at the “corporate” level without any regard to the local market. The same type of thing happened when Scripps owned the Press Journal – don’t get me started!

• How cool is it that Jen Welter, a Sebastian River High

School graduate, became the first female coach in NFL history? She’s an assistant coach for the Arizona Cardinals at least through training camp. As of last week, the number of people following her on Twitter had jumped to nearly 65,000! Radio personality Alicia Marshall is the subject of this week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6. One of her pet peeves is people incorrectly pronouncing her first name. It’s “A-lish-a” (not “A-lee-sha”). OK, I plead guilty to pronouncing it the wrong way all these years! By the way, I asked her about Alicia Florrick – the main character on “The Good Wife” – and she said she has never watched the show. Stunner! Yes, I really did get a burr haircut. (See the new mug shot on page 4.) As the headline of a recent blog entry says, “Help! I’ve turned into my dad!”
