REARVIEW MIRROR: A look at the history of McKee Botanical Garden Long before 18 acres off U.S. 1 in south Indian River County became McKee Botanical Garden, it was 80 acres known as McKee Jungle Gardens, a tourist attraction with reptiles, lush tropical plants and monkeys. Arthur G. McKee, an engineer and inventor from Cleveland came to Vero Beach in 1922. He bought land in Vero Beach with Waldo Sexton for development and citrus planting. They agreed 80 acres would be preserved and made it a tourist attraction. It opened in 1932. It had hundreds of varieties of ferns, palms, rubber trees, orchids and the nation’s largest array of tropical water lilies able to live outside year-round. Trails, creeks, ponds and waterfalls were designed. It had a 3,000-year-old giant cypress stump in the parking lot and a whale skeleton at the entrance. There was a collection of exotic birds, including parrots that were loaned out to entertain service personnel during

World War II. Spider monkeys were imported to the gardens. Reptiles lived there. McKee put $100,000 into the attraction its first decade, employing 30 people to care for the animals, plants and trees. In preparation for WWII, Navy men and Marines trained in jungle warfare in the gardens, learning to fight in jungle conditions and how to live off the land. Public interest eventually waned and it closed in 1976. Most of the land sold for construction of condominiums. A “Save McKee Jungle Gardens” campaign in 1994 by the Indian River Land Trust allowed 18 of the 80 acres to be bought by the nonprofit group. An additional $9 million was raised to buy and restore the gardens. It opened in 2001 as McKee Botanical Garden at 350 U.S. 1 with 10,000 native and tropical plants. – Sources: “Images of America: Vero Beach” by Teresa Lee Rushworth; McKee Botanical Garden literature. We’re all in this together, right? All Aboard Florida cleared a huge bureaucratic hurdle last week when the Florida Development Finance Corporation voted to allow the sale of $l.75 billion in municipal bonds to finance the $2.5 billion rail project. There appears to be no stopping AAF now. If all goes as planned, the high-speed passenger trains will be zipping through Indian River County in just two years. The situation seems rather surreal, doesn’t it? When a server at a restaurant told me about reality TV star Nicole Polizzi – who’s better known as “Snooki” – vacationing in Vero Beach, I thought she was joking. Sure enough, a Google search led me to the website celebbabylaundry.com, which in late July had a photo of Snooki walking on a local beach with her daughter, Giovanna. Good to hear that Piper Aircraft didn’t have as many layoffs as feared – the final number was 78. (Another 37 opted for early retirement, making the total job reduction 117.) The

company announced in July that “up to 150” would lose their jobs. Meanwhile, I have a bone to pick with Piper. Someone showed me an ad that it ran in an aviation magazine – and, much to my surprise, nowhere did it say Vero Beach or even Florida. You’d think with all of the incentives and tax breaks given to Piper, it would at least mention Florida in the ad. The consistency of temperatures in these parts never ceases to amaze me. I mean, in the 73 years the National Weather Service has been keeping records for Vero Beach, the temperature in August has never been lower than 63 or higher than 98. Craig Mahan returned from Ohio last week and noticed my new burr haircut. “Did you lose a bet?” he asked. Well, if someone had wanted to bet Donald Trump would be the Republican frontrunner at this stage of the game, I would have lost my locks.

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest August on record in Vero Beach? It was 2011, with an average temperature of 83.7 degrees, followed by 2010 (83.6 degrees) and 2005 (83.5 degrees).

371. “Baby Hold On” (1978) Eddie Money Memory: It’s hard not to sing along with an Eddie Money song.

The coolest August on record in Vero Beach? It was 1967, with an average temperature of 79.8 degrees, followed by 1984 (80.1 degrees) and 1972 (80.3 degrees).

370. “Once in a Lifetime” (1981) Talking Heads Memory: Hard to believe that when this song was originally released, it never cracked Billboard’s Top 100. 369. “Honey” (1969) Bobby Goldsboro Memory: Yet another example of my hometown radio station’s influence on this list! All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
