LEMMON DROPS: Deals for downtown restaurants appear to be in works Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the hemorrhaging to stop with your 401(k):

• If you go on any website that lists businesses for sale in

Indian River County, you never know what you might find. So with that as a backdrop, I can’t say I was surprised when someone told me two well-known restaurants in downtown Vero Beach had been sold. (A few months ago, one of the restaurants had been listed for sale on the website.) Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate, wouldn’t confirm the names of the restaurants in question, but he did say neither deal has been finalized. “There are plenty of restaurant deals coming around,” he said, “but I have been sworn to secrecy until they come together.” How many restaurants are on the verge of being sold? Moss joked that it may turn into a game of musical chairs. “It’s going to be like ‘musical restaurants’,” he said. One restaurant on its way to Vero Beach is Spiro’s Taverna. The sign is already up at the location near the Kmart plaza – it’s going in where 3 Dog Deli used to be. Spiro’s, a Greek restaurant, has three locations in St. Lucie and Martin counties. I’ve been asked this question several times in recent weeks: What’s going to be built in the 20acre parcel of land that has been Russ Lemmon cleared just west of Olive Garden? Come on, people! I wrote about this in Issue 30. To repeat, there’s going to be a three-story apartment building with 159 units, a stand-alone Chick-Fil-A and a retail store (long expected to be Aldi). “It looks like Aldi is going to happen,” Billy Moss said. “They’ve broken ground.” Yes, Aldi – which is beloved by some – is headed our way.

There may be more to come, according to Moss, who attended a recent trade show (for shopping centers) in Orlando. “There’s a lot of national retail interest in Vero,” he said. “More than I’ve ever seen before.” The biggest surprise of the week? Finding out Bev and Marty Paris got to meet Caitlyn Jenner. Bev had a photo of the three of them to prove it. By the way, there’s a nice story about the couple behind Paris Productions in this month’s issue of Vero Beach Magazine. Good people. The coaching shirt worn by Sebastian River High School graduate Jen Welter – the first female coach in NFL history – was recently on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. She was an assistant coach with the Arizona Cardinals during the preseason, and the shirt she wore during the first preseason game, against Kansas City, was the one put on display. In last week’s issue I mentioned that 40 years ago I was

beginning my senior year of high school. I asked: “Where did the time go? Where did my hair go?” Charlotte Snedeker gave me a pep talk of sorts. “Russ, when you look in the mirror, remember: ‘A busy street grows no grass!’ ” Good thing I’m not trying to become a political pundit because this June 16 “tweet” on Twitter would come back to haunt me: “Opportunity knocked for Donald Trump about 15 years ago. He should have run for president then. Nobody cares what he has to say now.” Oops. So I dropped off last week’s issue at Chuck Bateman’s insurance office and asked Shandi Elrick, a service rep, if she had any update about her 2016 wedding. She said she went shopping for a wedding dress, but it didn’t go well. “Apparently, I have high-dollar tastes … without the high dollars,” she said.

The history of Lemmon Lines, Chapter 2 A note from publisher Russ Lemmon: You might say Catherine Caddell and I are now “engaged.” And my wife, Laura, is OK with that. By signing an agreement on Sept. 1, Catherine and I are on the path to becoming business partners during the second half of 2016. While I wasn’t really in the market for a partner in this venture, Catherine’s availability proved to be the equivalent of “opportunity knocking.” I had to open the door. We met for a cup of coffee on a Sunday afternoon in August to see if there was a mutual interest in pursuing some sort of alliance. I wanted what she had to offer – she is as personable as anyone I’ve met, and I knew she would be the perfect person to handle the all-important advertising side of Lemmon Lines. She wanted what I had to offer – the chance to become part-owner of a small business with a lot of upside.

As I told her, she would be able to make more money in the “corporate” world (where she had spent most of her working life), but what I could offer is immense satisfaction. As she told me, her late father, an attorney, had a small practice and she had been looking for a business opportunity of her own. I’m convinced there’s a “fate” aspect to how this all came about. So many things had to happen. A special “thank you” to master networker Susan Harris for being the original matchmaker. Without Susan’s involvement, I never would have crossed paths with Catherine back in June. Chapter 1 in the history of Lemmon Lines was launching the newsletter on Oct. 15, 2014. I’ve been humbled by the support of both readers and advertisers. Chapter 2 is the addition of Catherine Caddell. (See the ad at the bottom of the next page.) Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest September on record in Vero Beach? It was 1996, with an average temperature of 82.5 degrees, followed by 1998 (82.1 degrees) and 2004 (82.0 degrees).

359. “Here Come Those Tears Again” (1977) Jackson Browne Memory: The story behind the song (his 30-year-old wife committed suicide) is heartbreaking.

The coolest September on record in Vero Beach? It was 2001, with an average temperature of 78.4 degrees, followed by 1984 (78.6 degrees) and 2014 (78.7 degrees).

358. “A Lover’s Concerto” (1965) The Toys Memory: I used to have a hard time understanding the lyrics, but that didn’t stop me from humming along.

– Source: National Weather Service

357. “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me” (1982) Juice Newton Memory: A song I always associate with the good times of summer. Humorous video, too. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
