LEMMON DROPS: Eight words that helped restore my faith in humanity Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the start of the fall TV season:

• The tears in my wife’s eyes said it all.

She had a straight-on view of what happened. My back was to them, so I just heard what was said. Let me set the scene. We’re having breakfast at Bob Evans (sitting at Table 51, of course), and there are two gentlemen sitting at a table to my right. They’re talking about football. In the booth directly behind me is a man sitting by himself. The two menus on the table provided a clue he was waiting for someone. Several minutes later, a deputy with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrived and sat down with him. Fast forward maybe 15 minutes. The football-talking gentlemen are getting ready to leave. Before they head to the cashier, one of them stops to say something to the deputy. “Thank you for your service to our community.” Switch to Great-Tasting Beverages

It was from the heart. That’s why my wife’s eyes were misty. I didn’t want to interrupt their breakfast, so I left without saying anything to the deputy. However, I went out to the parking lot to get the number of his patrol car. I planned to call the Sheriff’s Office later that day to see who was driving Car No. 1404. In one of those bizarre Russ Lemmon coincidences, I came across Car No. 1404 about 5 hours later in a parking lot at Indian River Estates. Deputy Scott Carmine was there on a service call. I told him how cool it was to hear the gentleman at Bob Evans say that to him. (The backdrop to all this, obviously, is that a number of law enforcement officers across the country have been killed in recent weeks.) Carmine, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 19

years, expressed frustration over the situation nationally. But he was thankful a local resident gave him a tip of the hat, so to speak. Then, Carmine told me someone paid for his breakfast. He wasn’t sure who did, but it was pretty easy to connect the dots. Very cool, football-talking gentlemen! Your nice gestures touched everyone in that section at Bob Evans. As Billy Moss hinted last week, a lot of restaurant shuffling is about to take place in Vero Beach. It appears the first domino has fallen – 14th Avenue Steakhouse has been sold, and it’s expected Avanzare will move to that location. Some housekeeping from last week’s “Just wondering” list on page 3. The list had to do with military-related license plates. Unfortunately, the state website does not have the local numbers for a multitude of other military-related plates – such as Disabled Veteran, Purple Heart and Ex-Prisoner of War. At some point, I’ll try to obtain the local numbers from the state office in Tallahassee. If successful, I’ll put together a

new “Just wondering” list for page 3. As noted in this space previously, a sign on northbound U.S. 1 (at 12th Street) has been updated to include the 10 consecutive state championships won by the Vero Beach High School girls lacrosse team. A sign with the same information is now on southbound U.S. 1 just north of Aviation Boulevard. The recognition is well deserved. What are the odds of this happening? One afternoon last week, I received consecutive emails from the following women. Cindy Carson. Catherine Caddell. Christina Cassell. So I stopped by Treasure Coast Lock & Safe to have a spare key made. I marveled that it took Brad Volpe only about 3 seconds to make it. “It’ll work, too,” he said.

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Sebastian, the most populous city in Indian River County, has had multiple growth spurts during the past 35 years.

356. “Patches” (1970) Clarence Carter Memory: One of the most obscure songs in the countdown. Love the story of dependability told within.

In 1980, Sebastian’s population was only 2,831. A decade later, it was 10,248. In 2000, it was 16,181. At the end of 2014, Sebastian’s population was estimated at 23,066.

355. “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” (1976) Eric Carmen Memory: For a song with such a “downer” message, it’s hard not to feel good as you’re singing along.

– Source: Indian River Chamber of Commerce’s website

354. “Spirit in the Sky” (1969) Norman Greenbaum Memory: One of the great one-hit wonders of all-time. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
