LEMMON DROPS: Hassle-free weekend getaways to Big Apple coming soon to an airpo Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next episode of “The Grinder”:

• Commercial air service is returning to the Vero Beach

Regional Airport. (Woo hoo!) Elite Airways will be offering direct flights to and from Newark Liberty International Airport beginning Dec. 10. With flights on Thursday and Sunday, it’s perfect for a weekend getaway to the Big Apple. “We think it’s going to be a real hit,” Airport Director Eric Menger said at last week’s press conference to introduce Elite. The implications, all positive, are huge. Local residents won’t have to drive to Orlando or some other airport to catch a flight to the New York City area. Did I mention there’s free parking here? The “convenience factor” is a 10. Tourists wanting to visit Vero Beach will have a direct flight (2 hours, 50 minutes). Rental-car agencies near the

airport will be getting the business instead of their counterparts in Orlando or West Palm Beach. Same goes for C.J. Cannon’s restaurant. “Once this gets out in the press up north, it’ll be incredible,” said John Pearsall, president of Elite Airways. Menger estimates there will be $1.8 million of economic impact Russ Lemmon locally during the first year. My impression of Elite is that it’s a small airline interested in doing things the right way. In other words, it’s not going to bail after a few months. Kudos to Eric Menger for making this happen. With the Press Journal expected to have yet another owner in six months, I’m feeling pretty good about my decision to leave the newspaper industry. It’s going to be very

From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

rt near you interesting to see how the PJ fares under Gannett ownership. The acquisition is a smart move by Gannett. It’ll own daily newspapers in Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. That being said, the PJ’s change in ownership can only help sister publications Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News. A reader sent an email to complain about the new traffic signal being installed at Indian River Boulevard and 53rd Street. He said it was a waste of taxpayer dollars – and I told him I agreed. Turns out there’s no cost to taxpayers. Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works, says Grand Harbor’s developer is footing the bill for the new signal. The corn maze at Countryside Citrus has been canceled this year. Blame it on Tropical Storm Erika – all of the rain caused a delay in the planting of the corn. (Some good news: Countryside Citrus is doubling the size of its strawberry patch. The strawberries should be ready in December.)

• Do you know a World War II veteran who would enjoy

going to see the WW II Memorial in the nation’s capital? Thanks to donations from its customers, C.J. Cannon’s restaurant has raised enough money for four tickets with the Space Coast Honor Flight. Please contact Pat Cannon or Lois Cappelen at the restaurant if you or someone you know would be interested in going on this free flight. So my wife and I are at a locally owned restaurant known for breakfast (not C.J. Cannon’s, by the way), and she orders basted eggs. The server throws us for a loop by saying she has never heard of basted eggs. After my wife explained what they are, the server takes the order … but, in the end, poached eggs are what appeared on her plate. Very strange! Finally, I want to thank all of those who acknowledged our first birthday. The phone calls, emails, posts on Facebook and, of course, in-person comments were greatly appreciated. On to Year 2!

Top 500 countdown

Fun facts The warmest October on record in Vero Beach? It was 2007, with an average temperature of 80.2 degrees, followed by 1985 (80.1 degrees) and 1995 (79.2 degrees).

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 344. “Runaway” (1978) Jefferson Starship Memory: I liked Starship a lot more than Airplane! 343. “Club Can’t Handle Me” (2010) Flo Rida Memory: Granted, this song is completely out of character for me, but it’s so addictive. I can’t listen to it just one time. 342. “Best of My Love” (1974) The Eagles Memory: Only after Don Henley’s string of hits in the ’80s did I fully appreciate this song.
