PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: The stories behind Wabasso’s name (Part 2) Three more possible explanations for the name Wabasso (see Issue 53 for the first two):

hurricanes hit Ossabaw Island in 1896 and 1898. The black population left Ossabaw Island and Wabasso was named in 1897. Coincidence? 3. Did settlers from Ossabaw Island, Georgia 4. It was named by J.R. Perrot of the Florida East settle here? Wabasso is Ossabaw spelled Coast Railroad in 1893. There is no source. Perrot backwards. Two published books state this. There was vice president of FEC and Henry Flagler’s rightis no source. hand man. The only reference found where Perrot From the website “The Ossabaw Island Pam Cooper may have named a town was actually Woodley Foundation”: The word Ossabaw derives from (1893) and NOT Wabasso. By 1897, Perrot left the area. It is the Guale (Wally) Indian word in the Muskogean or Creek unlikely he had anything to do with naming this town. language that means, literally, ‘yaupon holly bushes place.’ 5. There were two families that lived in the Wabasso area The Muskogean peoples who used them to make the “black that came from Minnesota: James Dodge (1892) and Ole drink” prized the leaves of the cassine or yaupon holly (Ilex Helseth (1896.) Both were postmasters and there is a remote vomitoria.) This tea induced vomiting ... possibility they knew or lived near Wabasso, Minnesota. Ossabaw was inhabited by African-Americans until the late 1800s. The holly bushes mentioned exist in Indian River County. In 1696, Jonathan Dickinson wrote about them in his diary. Could someone from Ossabaw have moved to Wabasso? Would he suggest reversing the letters? Severe

LEMMON DROPS: Zorc plans to be on both of Elite’s inaugural flights Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Cubs and Blue Jays to reach the World Series:

• When it was announced Elite Airways would begin service

between Vero Beach and Newark, Tim Zorc knew exactly what he would be doing on Dec. 10, the first day for the flights. At 8:30 a.m., he will be on the inaugural flight from Vero Beach to Newark. Then, at 12:15 p.m., he will be on the inaugural flight from Newark to Vero Beach. He will spend roughly 45 minutes on the ground in New Jersey, waiting for the return trip to Florida. Zorc, who is a County Commissioner, loves to fly and you might call him a commercial aviation “geek.” Back in 2001, he was onboard Continental Airlines’ first flight in a Boeing 777 from Newark to Hong Kong (16.5 hours). Then, after a 6-hour layover, he was on the first flight from Hong Kong to Newark (18.5 hours).

As the former national director of the National Association of Homebuilders, Zorc once accumulated 4 million miles in frequent-flier programs. He currently has about 2 million frequent-flier miles. He doesn’t fly as nearly as much these days. “Having three kids at home has clipped my wings,” he said. Russ Lemmon His son, Nicholas, age 11, holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever registered in Continental’s frequent-flier program. Tim registered Nicholas just 9 minutes after he was born. “My wife thought I was calling family members with news about the birth of our son, but I was actually on the phone with Continental registering Nicholas in the frequentflier program,” he said. “She wasn’t real thrilled about that.” PPING, DAZZLING, TOE-TAGE FIN R-SNAPPING!

From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

IT IS A DESTINATION NOT TO BE MISSED!

• Just as Cumberland Farms stores have cropped up all over Indian River County during the past couple of years, Family Dollar stores are about to do the same. In addition to the Family Dollar store getting ready to open at Oslo Road and 27th Street, a new store is under construction at 43rd Avenue and 45th Street. Also, one is expected to be built on U.S. 1, just north of Velde Ford, according to John McCoy, chief of current development in the county’s department of Community Development. Wesley Davis arrived at Seacoast Bank’s networking event last week (at the new Hampton Inn in the Miracle Mile area) wearing a name tag identifying him as a County Commissioner. I razzed him a bit, and asked why he wasn’t wearing a name tag identifying him as a candidate for Property Appraiser in 2016. Right on cue, Davis took off his County Commissioner name tag, reached into the left pocket of his sport coat and pulled out a Property Appraiser name tag. planning to watch the Hallmark Channel’s first Christmas movie on Oct. 31? (Yep, she’s part of the problem!) An unexpected development regarding the project on State Road 60, between 58th and 66th avenues, just west of Olive Garden: “Aldi is likely to not go forward,” the aforementioned John McCoy said of the discount supermarket chain headquartered in Germany. What about the status of the stand-alone Chick-fil-A? “That’s pretty certain,” he said. “They continue to show a high level of interest.” When asked what was going to replace Aldi, McCoy said the likely candidate is another restaurant. He called it “a fluid situation.” Now that The Melody Inn has closed, I asked former owner Margaret Burri if she planned to stay in the area. “Yes, I’m staying here. I love Vero Beach!” she said in an email. “Hope to start enjoying it now.”

Meet me at Table 51 Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

As of last week, she was approaching 100 “likes.” Before we met at Bob Evans, I hadn’t seen any of her cookies on Facebook. However, to mark the first birthday of Lemmon Lines, she brought a few samples – and they were visually stunning. Top 500 countdown

Fun facts The number of registered voters in Indian River County has topped 100,000. The milestone was reached back on Oct. 8. About 119,000 people in the county are age 18-plus. Which means about 82 percent of the voting-age population is registered to vote.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 341. “Precious and Few” (1971) Climax Memory: A song I instantly associate with junior high.

– Source: Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office

340. “All I Wanna Do” (1994) Sheryl Crow Memory: Another example of a video making the song even better. 339. “Beds are Burning” (1987) Midnight Oil Memory: Back then, I didn’t realize this was a protest song about something going on in Australia. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
