LEMMON DROPS: Pressing the ‘pause’ button to give thanks Some rapid-fire, holiday-themed Lemmon Drops:

looks like U.S. 192 in Melbourne. (With each passing year, though, the similarities increase.) I’m thankful Sebastian and Fellsmere are in Indian River County. When you visit each community, it’s like taking a step back in time. I’m thankful I’ve gotten to meet dozens of small-business owners Russ Lemmon during the past year. Such quality people. (They are the reason I ran the “Small Business Saturday” ad on the front page.) I’m thankful Indian River County is home to roughly 18,000 military veterans. Thank you for your service. I’m thankful the organizers of the Vero Beach Air Show worked so hard to convince the Blue Angels to make a return appearance in 2016.

• I’m thankful to be living in Indian River County. I love the pace of life here. So glad we don’t have to compete in the “rat race.” • • I’m thankful for the beautiful weather here, especially from November through May. There’s no better place to be. • I’m thankful that, for the seventh year in a row, we made it through another hurricane season without a serious threat. Knock on wood. (Erika looked ominous for a time, but it • didn’t affect us.) • I’m thankful there’s a height limit for buildings in Indian River County. It’s our insurance policy against becoming “another South Florida.” I’m thankful for all of the snowbirds who make their way here each year. They add a certain “spice” to the area. Most of the snowbirds I meet are appreciative and know how good they have it. I’m thankful that neither State Road 60 nor County Road 512

River County. As I always say, this is my connection to the Midwest. (Having spent the first 21 years of my life in Indiana, I’m a Midwesterner at heart.) I’m thankful the orange barrels have vanished on U.S. 1, from Oslo Road to the St. Lucie County line. Finally!!! I’m thankful so many people in Indian River County care about the literacy rate of children in elementary school. I’m thankful Indian River County has three top-flight libraries. (Who needs Netflix when you can get DVDs for free at the library?) I’m thankful sister publications Vero Beach 32963 and Vero News exist, because they provide competition for the Press Journal. I’d hate to see the content in the PJ if it didn’t have such formidable competition. I’m thankful for Vision Plus, Treasure Coast Jewelers & Music, Sandpiper Pest Control, Lowther Funeral Home and Colkitt Air Conditioning for having an ad in every issue of Lemmon Lines.

604 “Likes” on Facebook. Some people scoff at the social media, but there’s no denying it has changed the way we communicate. I’m thankful for the level of traffic in Indian River County. Most days, I drive from one end of the county to the other – and sometimes I do it more than once. I’m always befuddled when people complain about the traffic. I’m thankful for the 19 wonderful years my wife and I have had together. She was scared to death when I started this venture – after all, I left a secure job with good benefits at the Press Journal – but she trusted my instincts. I’m thankful so many readers have made Lemmon Lines a weekly habit. We couldn’t do it with you! I’m thankful for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. If you enjoy reading this publication, please thank the advertisers you see on these eight pages. They made it possible. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Overlooked cinematic gems As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

of La-la Land. This quintessential indie film may be a bit “artsy-fartsy” for some (it’s shot in black and white), but is still recommended based on the strength of its young up-and-coming cast (Kyra • The Smell of Success (2009, PG-13, directed by Sedgwick, Renee Zellweger, Sean Astin, Ron Michael Polish). Let me start off by saying that this Livingston and many more). is my all-time favorite movie about door-to-door • They Came Back (2004, PG, directed by Robin manure salesmen. The founder of Rose’s Manure Campillo). What if the dead began coming back Company has passed away and it is up to his to life, but instead of desiring human flesh, all Mike Bushman estranged daughter (Téa Leoni) and a rag-tag team they want is to resume their normal lives? This of salesmen (led by Billy Bob Thornton) to prevail film explores the complex problems that arise over their ruthless new competitor. This surreal comedy has following that event. Logistical concerns, the emotional a nostalgic feel and stunning visual appeal. Also stars Ed conflicts of former friends and family, and a growing sense Helm and Kyle MacLachlan. of xenophobia are explored. An astonishingly fresh take • The Low Life (1995, R, directed by George Hickenlooper). on the zombie movie genre, “They Came Back” is the very John (Rory Cochrane) moved to Hollywood to catch his definition of avant garde. (French with English subtitles.) big break. Years later, however, he is left dejected and forced Mike Bushman is owner/operator of Recycled DVDs, located at to deal with his fading dreams and the dark cynical world 937 Seventh Ave. (behind Chili’s restaurant) in Vero Beach. Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 326. “Call Me Maybe” (2012) Carly Rae Jepsen Memory: The unofficial song of the 2012 Summer Olympics, thanks to all of those parody videos. 325. “It’s Too Late” (1971) Carole King Memory: As Neil Sedaka once said, breaking up is hard to do. 324. “Hey Jude” (1968) The Beatles Memory: Quick, when was the last time you heard this song on the radio? For me, it’s been more than a decade. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.

Fun facts Students in Indian River County’s public school system are allowed to purchase both breakfast and lunch in school cafeterias.
