LEMMON DROPS: In Gifford neighborhood, sisters show Christmas spirit Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next Republican presidential debate:

• It wasn’t the best night to visit Ola Mae Daniels and

Helen Jackson. We had just learned 14 people were killed in a shooting in San Bernardino, California. Still, seeing the Christmas displays in their front yards provided a certain amount of comfort in this increasingly crazy world. Ola Mae and Helen are sisters. They’ve lived across the street from each other, in the 3900 block of 45th Place in Gifford, for about 40 years. (Helen has lived in the same house for 51 years.) Let me tell you, their Christmas displays are simply spectacular. They are just as Linda Morgan described. She contacted me via Facebook to let me know about the sisters. Ola Mae’s son, Norris Jones, did most of the decorating.

He started on Thanksgiving. It took him three days to decorate his mother’s house, and then it was on to his aunt’s house. Many of the decorations are homemade. “I like creating things,” he said. The 15-foot star on top of Ola Mae’s roof is a good example of his creativity. Amazing work by Norris. Russ Lemmon “He tells everyone on the phone (asking for directions to the house) to just follow the star,” Ola Mae said. If you want to see the star, check out the photos on the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook. The Christmas displays draw a crowd each year. “We get a lot of traffic through here,” Helen said. For good reason.

772-713-6178 It’s worth the trip, folks. Speaking of Christmas decorations, C.J. Cannon’s has done it again. Year after year, the restaurant at the Vero Beach Regional Airport turns into a winter wonderland. Kudos to Lois Cappelen, Pat Cannon and Chuck Cannon for devoting a weekend to this crowd-pleasing project. (Lois arrived at 2 a.m. on a Saturday and couldn’t wait to get started.) Given their popularity among Republicans in the state, how can Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush be trailing Donald Trump in polls for Florida’s March 15 primary? Makes no sense. So much for the homecourt advantage. Prediction: Trump won’t win in Indian River County. Next time you’re out and about, perhaps Melody McCabe’s email will have you looking at local roads a little differently: “I have been wanting to mention something to you. I’ve had 5 flat tires in the past year. Wow! The more I drive, the more I notice how dirty our streets are in Vero. Have

• •

you looked at an intersection lately? Do we not have street sweepers anymore? Just curious because it seems the roads are filled with so much debris.” In this space last week, I wondered aloud if I’m the only person in Indian River County who hasn’t seen any of the “Star Wars” movies. Bob Livingston and Sharon Letts were among those to let me know we’re in the same club. Curtis Carpenter made me laugh with this email: “I’ve never seen any of them either. I’m only 31, but I always felt like I was the only person in the world that hadn’t seen any of them either. The irony, all my 5-year-old wants for Christmas is ‘Star Wars’ stuff. (I’m assuming the ‘light saber’ is the catalyst.) I don’t think we’ll be sharing this similarity for long, though. His birthday is Dec. 23. I plan on watching the first one with him on that day.” What a birthday present for Micah! Is it just me, or have drivers gotten a lot more “aggressive” on local roadways?
