LEMMON DROPS: Vocelle pulls one surprise after another Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the election results on “Super Tuesday”:

• Buck Vocelle has been full of surprises this month.

And I’m not even counting the well-known Vero Beach attorney’s new Colonel Sanders-like facial hair. The initial surprise came on Feb. 13, when I saw he had filed to run for elected office for the first time in his life – he’s seeking a seat on the Mosquito Control Board. The next surprise came two days later. When I was dropping off a copy of Lemmon Lines at his office, I noticed there was a “Donald Trump for President” sticker on his SUV – which is unusual in that most businesses steer clear of political messages. The final surprise came the following day. He revealed he was on the most recent episode of the popular “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS. OK, let’s go in order: Why run for the Mosquito Control Board?

“It intrigues me,” he said. He said his grandfather was instrumental in creating the first Mosquito Control district in the area. Plus, he gained awareness of mosquito-borne illnesses through trips to the Dominican Republic with the Rotary Club. This is about public service, period, he said. Why a Trump sticker on his SUV? Russ Lemmon “That’s not an endorsement of Trump. It’s a statement about the current state of affairs in our country,” he said. “I’d rather vote for Chris Christie, but he’s out of the race.” Why was he on “Antiques Roadshow”? Vocelle’s father, who died in 1996, had a commemorative button that was made for George Washington’s first inauguration. On the show, Buck was told the button was worth $5,000 to $7,000.

• On any given day, in driving from one end of the county

to the other, I see at least three people who appear to be homeless asking for money where cars are stopped – the exit at the Walmart in Sebastian is a good example. I keep hoping the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office will intervene in the situation at U.S. 1 and 53rd Street. In the left-hand turn lane (southbound U.S. 1), a guy walks down the long line of cars and asks for money. It makes drivers uncomfortable, plus no pedestrians should be on that island. He’s been doing this for weeks. The Republican Club of Indian River County has more than a dozen sanctioned clubs. The newest one: Professional Republican Woman & Mother (PRWM), which has 25 members. According to its mission statement, the club “is organized for the purpose of influencing, advancing, leading and communicating the Republican agenda to fellow professional women and mothers of all ages, race and religion.” Interested in learning more about the club? Check out

the website – www.prwmir.org – or send an email inquiry to prwmir@att.net. Good news: Incoming County Administrator Jason Brown’s salary will be nearly $35,000 less than his predecessor, Joe Baird, who is making $201,960 a year. Bad news: Brown’s $167,000 salary is nearly $32,000 higher than the statewide average for a county administrator. (According to the Florida Association of Counties, the average salary of a county administrator is $135,158.) A few weeks ago, I mentioned Mike Bushman still has an Earthlink email address (think Betamax-like). Turns out Property Appraiser David Nolte also has Earthlink. Keep those “Stranded on a Desert Island” items coming. They’re fun to read. (Send your list of book, album, movie and celebrity crush to russ@lemmonlines.com.) You’re up, Kathryn Westermann. “Book: ‘Sarah’s Key’ by Tatiana DeRosnay, a book I have recommended to all of my friends. … Movie: ‘August Rush’ – the music was so moving, romantic and well-acted.”

Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 287. “Live Like You Were Dying” (2004) Tim McGraw Memory: While I have no desire to go skydiving or ride a bull named Fu-Manchu, there’s no denying this song makes you want to live life to the fullest.

General-fund expenditures by County Attorney’s office has skyrocketed in recent years. During the 2012-13 fiscal year, expenditures totaled $659,568. Two years later, the total was $1.35 million. For the 2015-16 fiscal year, just under $1.83 million has been budgeted for the office. – Source: Indian River County
