LEMMON DROPS: Benjamin’s weekly newspaper now a major player Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the series finale of “The Good Wife”:

• Milton Benjamin once said I belonged in the “Journalism

Hall of Shame” for a column I wrote while at the Press Journal. Actually, I think he bestowed that “honor” on me twice. That’s OK – he should have heard some of the names I called him and his publication, Vero Beach 32963. But that was then, and this is now. We met last week at Bob Evans for what was supposed to be a “Meet me at Table 51” interview. But with Gannett taking over ownership of the Press Journal, I called an audible and made it the lead item of this week’s column. As a business owner, I can’t help but tip my hat to Benjamin for what he has accomplished. We keep hearing the newspaper industry is near death, but 32963 is thriving. Since it began publishing in 2008, the weekly has had 33 consecutive quarters of growth in advertising revenue,

he said. (We’re talking year-to-year quarterly growth.) That’s nothing short of phenomenal. Benjamin, who also publishes Vero News and the Sebastian River News, now has 25 full-time employees, including 13 reporters. Let’s be clear: 32963 has more than twice as many reporters based in Indian River County than the Russ Lemmon Press Journal. As he said, “32963 could be much more profitable if I didn’t keep adding reporters and editors.” Thanks in large part to the investment in personnel, 32963 – which had 104 pages in a recent issue – has become a must-read. Benjamin, 73, sees himself doing this for at least another 10 years – even though he works “14 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

“I feel better today than I did when I was in my 50s,” he said.

• Regarding the daily newspaper’s new owner, here’s what

I’m most interested in knowing: Will Gannett keep the Press Journal’s name, or make it part of Florida Today? Benjamin predicts the name will be changed to Florida Today, while I lean toward Gannett sticking with the Press Journal. County Commissioner Tim Zorc and his family went to Iowa in December to campaign for Ted Cruz, who is battling Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for president. When asked if he would be going to any other states to help the Cruz campaign, Zorc said it was unlikely. After all, he and his wife, Laura, are both running for office (he’s running for reelection, and she’s running for School Board) and the August primary looms. Laura is still making calls on behalf of the Cruz campaign. Perhaps the biggest shock in recent weeks was my

accountant telling me that he and his wife make calls on behalf of the Bernie Sanders campaign. They’ve made more than 1,000 from their home just north of Oslo Road. Right now, their focus is calling registered Democrats in New York. Now before you try to slap a stereotype on my accountant, know this: He’s one of the most decent people I’ve ever known. A “Timing is Everything” story: While out and about, I receive an email at 3 p.m. from a neighbor saying our air conditioning unit sounds funny; I immediately call Colkitt Air Conditioning; the dispatcher says a technician is leaving Sebastian soon; within a couple of hours, a new fan motor has been installed. Aldo Musto made me smile when he said he has read every issue of Lemmon Lines except No. 52. Before the end of the day, I made sure he had the PDF version of the missing issue in his inbox.
