LEMMON DROPS: Workshop an opportunity to talk strategy with business owners Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the Warriors to repeat as NBA champions:
• I love to listen to people talk about strategy – that’s why I
find the political discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to be so engaging. Likewise, two years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of developing the initial strategy for Lemmon Lines. As publisher of a weekly newsletter, I feel like I’m an advocate for the local business community. In making the rounds, from one end of the county to the other, you come to realize we’re all in this together. That’s why I wanted to do something special for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. On April 26, we’ll be having a 90-minute workshop called “Strategies to Survive the Summer.” Most of the advertisers in this issue will have a representative there. It’ll be held at the new Hampton Inn & Suites in the Miracle Mile area.

The workshop – there are four scheduled throughout the day – is open to any business in Indian River County. (If you’re interested in attending, please call me right away at 772-321-3869. Seating is limited.) I’m fortunate to have John Lindsey, of Lindsey & Associates, leading the workshops. He has held workshops throughout the country. I’ve known Russ Lemmon John for more than 15 years, and he is a real pro. I can’t wait for everyone to roll up their sleeves and talk business strategy. Thanks in advance to the attendees. Please remember, folks, this newsletter would not exist without the support of advertisers on these eight pages. They make it happen. Every so often, my wife has to pay a library fine because

she returned a book late. It’s a ridiculously low fine (25 cents a day) … but, apparently, it all adds up. During the last fiscal year, the library collected $53,715 in fines. Two years ago, fines totaled $61,371. I never would have guessed the fines added up to midfive figures. I would have said, at most, $2,000. What’s going to be built in the recently cleared parcel of land just west of Velde Ford, you ask? It’ll be a Dollar General Store, according to John McCoy, the county’s director of current development. So I stop by Minuteman Press to pick up copies of the following week’s issue of Lemmon Lines and Tiffany Justice, a candidate for the School Board, happens to be there. Before leaving, I joke that she has a great name for a political candidate. She said a judge would be the ideal position for someone with the last name of Justice. “If I knew I was going to marry a Justice, I would have become a lawyer,” she said.

• Paul Janensch was left scratching his head after reading
this message on a sign at the entrance to a pathway to the beach: “No animals except handicap assisted” Paul said: “It’s fortunate that most of us can figure out what that means, but the wording doesn’t make sense. The only approved animals are those that are handicapped and being assisted?” He suggested this for the wording: “No animals except service dogs.” Bingo! Paul, a former newspaper editor, is a seasonal resident who does a weekly Treasure Coast Essay for WQCS (88.9 FM) and wqcs.org. The Indian River County Intergenerational Recreation Facility (the big structure you see north of Oslo Road just before 20th Avenue) is scheduled to open in June. Hmmm. Is it too late to change the name? Come on, it’s a big-time clunker!
