JUST WONDERING: What are the most popular excuses for speeding? Jeff Saputo, a deputy with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, hears all kinds of excuses when he stops people for speeding. He compiled the list below. 1) “My GPS said I was doing the speed limit.” (Deputy’s take: “Not their speedometer – their GPS.”) 2) “I did not know what the speed limit was.” (Deputy’s take: “I hear this excuse a lot from out-of-town/out-of-state drivers. My response usually is: ‘Do you have speed limit signs in your town, state or country?’) 3) “I have to go to the bathroom.” (Deputy’s take: “Typically diarrhea or No. 2.”) 4) “This is not my car, I am not use to it.” (Deputy’s take: “My response usually is, ‘Does it have a speedometer?’ ”) 5) “I am late for work.” 6) “I am late to pick up my children at school.” 7) “I was going with traffic.” (Deputy’s take: “A very common excuse.”) 8) “My gas tank is on empty and I am trying to get to the gas station.” (Deputy’s take: “I hear this excuse frequently – it defies the laws of logic.”) 9) “I am having a bad day ... I have a lot on my mind.” 10) “I am running late to the airport.” (Deputy’s take: “Usually late for their flight.”)

LEMMON DROPS: Invasion of ‘corporate’ stores changing look of Vero Beach Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Donald Trump to be more like Eddie Haskell before the GOP convention:

• Walmart may have driven mom-and-pop shops out of

business, but corporate-owned “dollar” stores are flourishing. When the new Dollar General Store just west of Velde Ford opens later this year, it’ll be the 12th “dollar” store in Indian River County. (There will be four each by Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.) “When there’s development anywhere, you’ll always see a ‘dollar’ store,” said Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate. “The dollar stores are the new convenience stores.” Pretty soon, U.S. 1 will become a string of “corporate” stores – whether restaurants, drugstores, gas stations, grocery stores, mattress stores or auto parts stores. Oh, and storage facilities.

John McCoy, the county’s chief of Current Development, says two national companies are looking at land near U.S. 1 to build storage facilities. “People tell us there’s a real shortage of (storage) units,” he said. With this seemingly relentless “corporate” invasion, we’re losing the local flavor you associate with Vero. In a couple of years, U.S. 1 in Vero Russ Lemmon Beach could look just like Highway 192 in Melbourne. Let’s hope that’s not the case, but it seems inevitable. So I go into the Shell station at 53rd and U.S. 1 to mail a small package, and the post office substation inside is practically a campaign office for Jay Kramer, who is running for a seat on the County Commission. On the counter is a brochure for Kramer as well as a petition for an issue he supports.

JOHN KIM FOR SCHOOL BOARD

“Kim is 4 Kids” Political advertisement paid for and approved by John Kim - non-partisan for Indian River County School Board.

Not cool. Postal facilities, even ones as small as this one, should be free of politics. A “small world” story: John Lindsey, who lives in Mississippi, recently traveled to Vero Beach for the “Strategies to Survive the Summer” workshop. His next-door neighbor (last name of Carter) is from Vero Beach. In this space last week, I mentioned Pam Birchler’s suggestion of coming up with a nickname for the soon-to-open Indian River County Intergenerational Facility (the huge building under construction just north of Olso Road). Pam suggested Big Red. Catherine St. Clair suggested YORC – an acronym for Young and Old Recreation Center. Jerry Nashel’s nomination: “Your County 1% Extra Sales Tax Rec Center.” Baseball fans will appreciate what the aforementioned Billy Moss, who is a huge fan of the Baltimore Orioles, is doing next month. He’s taking his 10-year-old son, Sam, who is a huge

baseball fan, to a game at Camden Yards. Even adults get into the fun. Last weekend, Curtis Carpenter was in Chicago and saw his first game at Wrigley Field. (Actually, he saw three major league games in four days – he saw home games for the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox.) OK, one more baseball note: Don’t you love the sign on the sidewalk in front of ABC Printing that brags about the Cubs being in first place? The parking lot at the Main Library is straight out of the 1950s. It’s often packed and can be tough to navigate. That why it was so frustrating to see a car intentionally take up two parking spaces recently. It ticked me off so much that I posted a photo on Facebook. Much to my surprise, it generated 17 comments and received 25 “likes” in the first two days. In case you’re wondering, the new Chick-fil-A restaurant is expected to open before the end of the month. Better get into the drive-thru lane now because that’s going to be a very popular restaurant.

Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 254. “Suspicious Minds” (1968) Elvis Presley Memory: I liked the songs by “old” Elvis a lot more than those by the hip-shaking “young” Elvis. 253. “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” (1975) John Denver Memory: Gotta love his enthusiasm in singing this one. 252. “Welcome Back” (1976) John Sebastian Memory: The perfect theme song for the “Welcome Back, Kotter” TV show. All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
