LEMMON DROPS: Costa d’Este to host preview event for one of fashion’s big names Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Nyquist to win the Preakness:
• What I know about the world of fashion could fit in one of Donald Trump’s hands. That said, I know there’s always a buzz when Lilly Pulitzer introduces a new line of clothing. Which makes what’s taking place the next two weeks at Costa d’Este pretty cool. The company will be giving Pulitzer-affiliated stores a preview of its new resort wear. “It is not open to the public,” said Julie Knight, owner of The Lazy Daisy. “It is a business-working event.” Knight says about 75 rooms at Costa d’Este – owned by singer Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio – have been booked over the two-week period. Store representatives from around the country will come here for two days at a time. It was Knight who suggested Vero Beach as the site for the

The Lazy Daisy, located just west of Ocean Drive, is within walking distance of Costa d’Este. The store carries only Lilly Pulitzer clothing. Lots of changes could be made in the meantime,” Knight said. “But that’s kind of the fun of Lilly. The Lilly customer waits for the next line to come out. They want to see what it looks like, they want to see the new prints. It’s a lot of

the element of surprise, and excitement.” The site that was originally a Perkins restaurant is being transformed into DaVita Dialysis Center. It’s great news for the plaza on northbound U.S. 1 just south of 4th Street. It had been struggling since the Department of Motor Vehicles closed its office there a few years ago. This will be the third DaVita Dialysis Center in Indian River County. It’s expected to open by the end of the summer. “They’re a phenomenal tenant,” said Mike Stiles, the property manager. According to Stiles, the dialysis center is considering being open 24 hours a day. With the 5,300-square-foot building currently undergoing a makeover, Stiles says doctor offices and a real estate company have inquired about openings in the plaza. Sebastian is known for its “welcome” sign to the city – you know, “Friendly People and Six Old Grouches.” Richard Granata showed me a photo of the sign he took

while traveling through New Mexico: “Welcome to Aztec. 5,506 Friendly People & 6 Old Soreheads.” The name of the aforementioned plaza on U.S. 1 is officially Royal Gardens, although you won’t find it on any signs. Mike Stiles, the property manager, says Frank Sosta, the owner of Royal Cut Barber Shop, is lobbying to keep the name Royal Gardens. (“Frank is a fixture,” Stiles said. “He’s like the mayor of the plaza.”) However, Stiles hinted that a name change to DaVita Plaza might be forthcoming. Some funny trivia regarding a longtime local business: Father & Sons Carpet is run by four brothers, and all of them have three-letter names – Tim, Ron, Tom and Don. Attention, Darrell Rivers (candidate for sheriff) and Richard Gillmor (candidate for County Commission): There’s a reason other candidates haven’t joined you in putting up campaign signs – they’re showing respect for the various local ordinances. Unlike both of you.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 251. “One of Us” (1995) Joan Osborne Memory: Theme song of the TV show “Joan of Arcadia” (which I never watched). 250. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” (1966) Beach Boys Memory: We’re at the halfway point of the countdown! 249. “Take Me Home Tonight” (1986) Eddie Money Memory: Love his backstory of being a former New York City Police Department trainee. His father, grandfather and brother were all members of the NYPD.
