LEMMON DROPS: If all goes as planned, county’s first Aldi will be built near Applebee’s Eight bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Tony Kanaan to take the checkered flag in the Indianapolis 500:

• Apparently, Aldi still wants to open a grocery store in

Indian River County. The German chain originally was interested in building one of its no-frills stores in the new development just west of Olive Garden (on eastbound State Road 60 just west of 58th Avenue), but that didn’t work out. Aldi is now looking at being part of something new a mile or two to the east. The retail shopping development, tentatively called Vero Beach Landings, would be built between Applebee’s and Sonny’s. According to the pre-application submitted to the county, the 9.5-acre development would include an Aldi (18,500 square feet), a retail plaza (42,000 square feet), a fast-food restaurant and a gas/convenience store.

“They’re in the very beginning stages,” said Steven Hitt, a senior environmental planner with the county. Phil Matson, staff director for the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, says a pre-application is the first step in a months-long process. “We have a lot of stuff that dies in (the) pre-application (stage),” he said. Russ Lemmon What are the chances this project will die? “It depends 100 percent on the interest of the developer,” he said. Based on how many people do their grocery shopping at Walmart, Aldi could be a big hit in the area. That’s because its prices are often lower than Walmart’s. When there’s an extended downpour, I always joke with my wife that “it’s like Tropical Storm Fay.” (That 2008 storm will long be remembered for the 18 inches of rain over the

course of a week.) So, what are we going to call last week’s storm that dumped 11.22 inches of rain in Vero Beach? It shattered the one-day record for precipitation. (See the all-time Top 10 list on Page 3.) We need a name! Otherwise, it’s going to be too hard to remember the details. Did you know on the day of the record-setting rain Vero Beach was mentioned on both the CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News? We didn’t make the cut on ABC World News Tonight. Readers email me photos all the time, and here’s a snapshot of the variety received so far this month – Elaine Moore sent a photo of newborn robins (taken by her friends in Ohio), Sue Carter took a photo of a car with a Quintana Roo (Mexico) license plate, and Melissa Morales sent a photo of a car taking up several parking spaces at Publix. S.R. 60 and encountered flooding on 33rd Avenue. It was pretty scary. Don’t get me started about the pick-up trucks that plowed through the water, spraying water on both sides. How inconsiderate. There are days when I wish I were a law-enforcement officer in an unmarked car. That way, I would have been able to stop the kid on the motorcycle who was going at least 85 mph on northbound U.S. 1 in the Winter Beach area. His insurance rates can’t be too high. The site of the former Dockside Grille, located on Royal Palm Pointe, is being gutted to make way for a new restaurant. Supposedly, it’s going to be a steakhouse. So I’m dropping off a copy of last week’s issue at the Florida Eye Institute and I hear a man making an appointment for his next annual exam – and the receptionist asks if May 23, 2017 is OK with him. “I’m free,” he said without hesitation.

Top 500 countdown Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 248. “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” (1978) Styx Memory: From an era when AM radio was still relevant. This song was a big hit on Chicago’s WLS. 247. “Modern Love” (1983) David Bowie Memory: Hard not to sing along with this one. 246. “Heat Wave” (1975) Linda Ronstadt Memory: Has anyone had more hits doing remakes of original songs? All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
