LEMMON DROPS: Landfill still has plenty of room for growth Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the last day of school:

• I can think of better places for a landfill. I mean, right next

to I-95 – where tens of thousands of people see it every day – is not exactly off the beaten path. What’s affectionately called “Mount Bird” (a nod to former County Commissioner Dick Bird) is now 177 feet high. It could qualify as a topographical feature on a map, as it’s believed to be the highest point in Indian River County. “In terms of something that you could drive to, yes, I would say the landfill is the highest point in Indian River County,” said Himanshu Mehta, the managing director of the Solid Waste Disposal District. “The Kings Highway Water Tower may be slightly higher.” The landfill still has a little room for growth vertically – the maximum height allowed is 180 feet, according to Mehta. “Landfills don’t just grow vertically,” he said. “We have

room to grow horizontally.” The footprint of the current landfill, which was established in 1977, is approximately 60 acres. However, the county has an additional 81 acres available for landfill expansion. That’s enough to last another 52 years, or to 2068, according to Mehta. Future generations will have to Russ Lemmon decide the location of the next landfill. Mehta says the county will likely begin the process of establishing a new landfill about 10 to 15 years before capacity is expected to be reached. Decades down the road, the current landfill could be converted into an area for recreational use – such as a park, mountain bike trails or a golf course. Future generations will tip their hats to us for setting aside the land.

They’ll be none the wiser as to what’s lurking below.

• It’s going to be interesting to see what happens to the former Dodgertown Golf Course. The city of Vero Beach is selling the 35-acre site between 43rd Avenue and Holman Stadium. The appraised value is $3.5 million. With all of the activity at Historic Dodgertown these days, one would think restaurants, retail shops and hotels are the leading contenders. Talk about completely changing the complexion of the immediate area. In my younger days, I would have been tempted to camp out all night at the new Chick-fil-A to receive a free meal every week for a year. At age 57, though, it never even came up for discussion in my mind. Several months ago, I thought Cumberland Farms and Wawa would be in a neck-and-neck race to see which one opened first on U.S. 1. Well, Cumberland Farms is taking the express route (it

looks like it’ll open in a month or so), whereas Wawa is taking the scenic route (at least there’s a “Wawa coming soon” sign up now). In this space last week, I suggested we come up with a name for the record one-day rainfall (11.22 inches) on May 17. Otherwise, because it wasn’t associated with a named storm, it’ll be hard to remember the details. Joy Ann Coll came up with a great name – “the May Day storm.” She said the name hints at the “emergency” aspect of the storm as well as the month it occurred. Todd Howder, who is the subject of this week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6, has fond memories of a job he had during his teenage years. He worked four years at Loy’s Men’s Wear (you have to be a longtime local resident to remember that store). “I’d love to work there again,” he said. “I’d take a break from my job now and work there for a week at Christmas … for free.”

We’ve finally moved, to 983 12th Street, behind the Car Wash.

The Blue Angels will be returning for this year’s air show, which is scheduled for June 25-26. Todd’s passion for the event was evident the second he started talking about it. He was president of the board for the first two air shows and now serves as an advisor. It didn’t take long for me to understand why Jan Binney, who handles publicity for the Vero Beach “It was an awesome experience,” he said between Todd Howder sips of some afternoon coffee at Bob Evans. “It was a Air Show, described Todd Howder the way she did. Top 500 countdown

Fun facts

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down. 245. “Closing Time” (1998) Semisonic Memory: A radio staple in the summer of ’98. 244. “Make Your Own Kind of Music” (1969) “Mama” Cass Elliott Memory: Another example of a relatively obscure song from your childhood sticking with you decades later. 243. “We Just Disagree” (1977) Dave Mason Memory: Sadly, in today’s world, there’s no such thing as “just disagreeing.” All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
