Hello*
My name is Lauren Mulkey.
Come on in.
It’s really nice to meet you, seriously. 003 180
My book The projects in the following pages represent the body of work completed during a four year long Masters program of Graphic Design at the Academy of Art University. Each project reflects part of my personality and I’m looking forward to putting my attention and skills to good use somewhere that shares my core values when it comes to design, and maybe life in general!
My values I enjoy design that is energetic, thoughtful, clever, considerate in message and materials, and most importantly, approachable. Designing experiences means considering the hands-on appeal—if something is not approachable people will not attempt to interact with it. This makes sharing any message— no matter what it is—more difficult. I love working with people, listening, asking questions, discussing, and thinking with others—I do it all day.
My goal I am currently seeking employment with a firm whose work I admire*.
* I admire your work. one | t wo | three | four | f ive | si x | se ven | eight | nine | ten | ele ven | t welve

A brand new look for a very old crow. Challenge Select a brand that could benefit from some design attention and re-design conceptual as well as visual identity standards.
Direction This project began by researching the history of bourbon; how it’s made, where it comes from, and why it’s a special American spirit. I tested high-quality bourbon, and when I tried Old Crow I decided an appropriate direction would be to package the old-timey energy of the brand into a character that stands out in contemporary markets. Introducing: Joe Crow, an older gentleman, the kind that enjoys sitting on his porch with his dog at his side, sipping a nice mint julep, enjoying the quiet with a smile on his face. He willingly shares his stories and words of wisdom but only if you show an interest—he’s not the sort to presume. He believes in respect, hard work, and a good laugh.
Outcome Through the use of textures, colors, typefaces, and text, I aimed to create a refined yet approachable feel to the design—y’know, like that of a classy grandfather. The box is oak, constructed by hand to hold the bottle and the brand standards book. The logo was laser-cut out of a steel plate and used as a stencil to burn the logo into the lid of the box. The final set combines organic textures, warm colors, clean typefaces, and welcoming text to help create a new look for an Old Kentucky Bourbon.

Making good use of my knitting skills. Challenge Create a timeline of an event with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Measure this event in organic happenings unlike seconds, hours, or days. Then create a format to display the information from your event.
Direction After several explorations, I decided to measure the time it takes to knit an entire ball of white yarn. I tracked the distractions that occurred while knitting by tying on additional pieces of colored yarn specific to each distraction at the moment they happened. I counted several distractions (eleven total), such as getting a drink, getting food, talking on the phone, or stopping because my fingers hurt, and displayed the information in a re-design of the yarn skein’s label.
Outcome Out of 9,000 stitches, 1,729 of were accompanied by distractions, the most frequent being talking on the phone for 750 knits (my mom can be a chatter). Clearly, Yarn-Time with Mulkey is both fun and friendly. It successfully illustrated a hobby of mine, and created a new way to interpret an experience or rather segment of time.

An in-depth exploration of a friendly face. Challenge Pick a single typeface and learn how to set it beautifully while making it look effortless.
Direction Through a variety of weekly exercises—including setting up a classic type specimen sheet—display the differing weights within the family, and demonstrate paragraph sets. I began to see details I never knew existed when it came to setting type. It also gave me the tools to identify and duplicate perfect typesetting in the future.
Result The resulting 27 pages are held in an elegant, handmade t y p e sp e cim e n b ox . B efo re th is cla s s , t y p ef a ce s we re intimidating and complicated, but af terwards I gained the confidence and tools I need to make any typeface look lovely under any circumstance.

This is Simple Card Games.
This old game still teaches life long lessons. Challenge Guide someone through the rules of poker in a single pamphlet.
Direction Since there are many kinds of poker, I chose to focus my project on Texas Hold’em. Prior to this assignment, I didn’t even know how to play poker, which made this project both tricky and also easy since I was my own target audience. I quickly realized poker is a complicated game with many important rules, not to mention strategies and tips to help play the game, so I kept extra design elements to a minimum to help the reader focus on the information.
Outcome The pamphlet is meant to be initially experienced as an letter sized piece, then unfolded to tabloid, then finally as a full poster. The first page sets the tone, using humor, and a simple description of the game. On the second full spread, I quickly introduced the goal of the game and what you need in order to play, the name of the positions at the table, and what different hands meant to your odds of winning any given hand. I designed a system to demonstrate the hands given to eight players, the bets they place and how the odds and positions shift as the game progresses. The back is saved for terms which one must be familiar with in order to play.

A happy meal for a band, with more toys and fewer calories. Challenge This project comes in two parts: 1) Find a handmade sign and —with the exact same production methods/materials— redesign the sign with an emphasis on typography, hierarchy and craft. 2) Using the original intention of the sign, extend this into a system of materials with a focus on divergent formats.
Direction I found a show flyer which was promoting two upcoming shows for a local band called Thee Oh Sees. After the initial flyer redesign, I decided to create a fan kit that would further encourage the band’s growing popularity. Research for the project meant meeting and interviewing the band, and then establishing a look that complimented the band’s sound and character. After hearing the music and meeting the four members—John Dwyer, Brigid Daweson, Petey Dammit, and Jigmae Baer— I decided to pull from their bold and sincere sound by representing them with bright colors and simple textures.
Outcome This kit includes a tour poster, a plush doll with an information tag for each member, as well as a CD box set for their four albums. Their music is loud and direct but still playful and fun. I made a bold, clean look that really highlights the band’s innovative playfulness. Each doll/tag has a story about the band member and each is hand made. Once, photographed, the final project was posted on the band’s website and fans started emailing to place orders.

Boldly going were no magazine has gone before. Challenge Produce and design a magazine called Constraint that showcases stories of achievements that occur only when constraints are present.
Direction Since one of the first goals of this publication is to make it different than others on the shelf, I wanted to really take some risks with the design. The professor decided on a format of 6 inches by 36 inches, because this would really stand out among other publications. Legible information should be less then an arm’s length away for it to be more easily read, so I decided tokeep all of the important textual content toward the bottom 12 inches of the page. I also decided that if a reader wanted to, they could cut the magazine 12 inches from the bottom and still have a readable magazine, front to back. Advertisements would be treated with constraint as well. One type of advertisement is only for business cards received in the mail by readers, and all the space allowed is the size of a business card. Other full-page ads are slivers cut from previously existing magazine ads, so all you can see is a cropped image and a website.
Outcome The resulting magazine is printed on newsprint paper with a thicker artistic cover weight paper in a nested sheet format just like a typical newspaper. There are main articles, advertisements, secondary articles, contests, and opportunities for interactivity. It is physically unique, inexpensive to produce and interesting to experience due to its special design features.

Remember that, valuable as is the gift of speech, silence is often just as sweet. Challenge Select a single topic and compile, design, and construct a book from the findings. The text can be from outside sources but I was responsible for the illustrations. Focusing primarily on the textual layout, I aimed to achieve typographic excellence on each page.
Direction Victorian etiquette has been explained in detail in many books, ranging from Emily Post’s volumes to the pages of Miss Manners Living Standards and many others. In How Do You Do? I pulled text from these sources and re-set the text while adding diagrams and illustrations. The rules and advice are simply displayed with perfect diagrams that help explain the complicated specifications one can find in your typical, everyday regency house.
Outcome Using a grey blue, natural white pages, and black type the book feels elegant, dainty, and delicate. Hand-bound locally, all binding materials are color coordinated to match the design, including the blue silk bookmark ribbon. The size of the book allows for quick and immediate reference even while in transit.

Making the ordinary into something extra-ordinary. Challenge Select a film director and design the collateral for a make-believe film festival. While researching the director, try to establish a theme that occurs throughout the films to use in the festival materials. The entire assignment includes the designing of: a catalogue, a poster, tickets, a uniform set, festival merchandise, a schedule, a soundtrack, DVD packaging, and an identity set.
Direction From the moment I was introduced to his work, I admired Michel Gondry’s creativity and innovation. Both his music videos and his films display his ability to take basic techniques and objects and use them to depict complex emotional situations. His style combines simple filming tricks as well as handmade elements. This combination allows him to blur reality and dreams—which is a reoccurring theme in his work—and lead me to call the festival “Wool Gathering,” which means to daydream. The reference to something tactile (wool) in this title fits with Gondry’s use of raw materials in his sets.
Outcome The final spread utilizes an array of unexpected, quirky objects, such as: magnets, for the uniform set; shrinky-dink tickets that can be made into keychain-sized souvenirs; and an alarm clock that helps you remember when to go to bed to dream. The festival materials also include corrugated cardboard, yarn, cloth, masking tape, needle and thread, packing envelopes, and buttons. Each piece is whimsical with an engaging aesthetic and is a friendly reminder to always play.

A collage every day keeps the demons at bay. Challenge Obtain The New York Times daily and create a cut-and-paste journal entry from its contents every day for the duration of the class (three months).
Direction There really can’t be much of a strategy or plan when it comes to this kind of assignment; however, I did start to see a trend in my daily collages. I always looked for interesting juxtaposing text and images. Trying to repurpose the meanings and find humor and/or make compelling compositions. Having a no-way-is-thewrong-way assignment allowed for risk-taking on a temporary but routine basis.
Outcome The final book and slipcase show the changing world through a selection of current events mashed-up with current images. I would not have attempted this kind of project on my own, but it proved very useful and I look forward to picking it up again in the future. The stack of papers left over, however, was a bit horrifying: 120 newspapers, 120 journal entries = 1 three-foottall stack of papers.

Soleful stories from shoes that have been down many roads. Challenge Examine my environment in a way that shows a new perspective. Then compile the information into a typographic format of my choosing; like a book!
Direction I am not into clothes but I am into shoes! I took advantage of this project to explore my environment through my shoes’ eye-view. By personifying my shoes and recording their experiences in a book of Shoe-per Stories; told by the shoes that walked them.
Outcome The final book—which is the same size as the average human foot—comes in a custom-made shoebox, complete with silica packets to limit mildew damage during shipping. I used shoeprints like fingerprints and made profiles for eight pairs of shoes. By recording their names, ages, sizes, and places of manufacturing I was able to give them identities and personalities, and individual stories with struggles and resolution. Shoes go everywhere we go, for better and for worse, through the good times and the bad. This book steps outside of our typical perspective and asks you to walk a day in your shoes.

Like finding a thesis in a hay stack. Challenge This class is a race to the end. You Select one topic, and each week you investigate and research the topic. After gathering twelve weeks’ worth of information and opinions on said topic compile the observations into a book.
Direction Handicrafts seemed popular in so many ways: to make, to buy, to order, to own. Everywhere I looked I saw craft fairs, DIY workshops, and books on the topic, and I wanted to understand what this was all about, why was it happening, and what it meant. It seemed that everyone was making, purchasing, or desiring things that were made not by a machine but by hand.
Result The final book addresses the cyclical nature of man verses machine, and how over time we swing back and forth between wanting technological innovation and returning to individual power. Our current market is saturated with digital innovation: everyone has cell phones, laptops, facebook profiles, blogs, etc. and we are starting to miss the simple pleasures that come from direct interactions between humans; like face-to-face interaction such as chatting in person, and on an individual basis; like cooking food or knitting a sweater. During this time of digital innovation people enjoy knowing they can still do things by themselves—self-sustainability. What they can do without the aid of digital interaction. This eventually lead me to discover my thesis topic, which addresses graphic design and craft, and how the computer has pulled designers away from the basic process which only hands and brain can create.

This is The Company of Great Friends.
Pirates that play together stay together. Challenge Juggle! 826 Valencia is a tutoring /creative writing workshop, so with constant distractions, an extremely fast-paced work environment, it is important to maintain flexibility and adaptability while still performing design work tasks.
Direction Quirky! This organization is jam-packed with characters and personality ranging all ages. It has been a pleasure getting familiar with it’s intelligent, honest, and comical style and a challenge implementing just the right amount of it into each publication. The first piece I designed was for the high school scholarship dinner ceremony which honors six seniors headed to college. Focussing on the “scholar” we went with a book theme. This project included not just invitations and envelopes but also, a front window display, name tags, certificates, and programs for the evenings event. Secondly, there is a summer program for elementary school students that upon its completion 826 gave a gift to the kids in the form of a t-shirt. One of the projects they worked on was learning about planets and rockets, finishing with rocket testing in the park that afternoon. Sticking to this theme we designed a shirt where rockets are blasting off the moon after planting 826 and ELL flags on its surface. The third project was the Summer mailer which is the organizations largest fundraiser of the year and showcases all the programs. Going with a game board theme we made it into an adventure that takes you through each program and introduces the success and struggles of 826 called Mr. Blue’s Improbable Deadline.
Result Each of the three projects here gave me the opportunity to work hard and have a blast at the same time. The Scholarship Awards Dinner was fun and sophisticated, the English Language Learners students loved their glow in the dark t-shirts, and the mailer has brought in over $40,000 and counting.

Many many many...
Thank yous.
People to thank. Family Holy cow you can’t imagine how long I have waited to sit here and write these paragraphs! It’s 3:36 am, this book isn’t due tomorrow morning, and I need to thank some folks. To my parents (Jay and Sue Mulkey of Salem, Oregon), I love their energy, their example, and their constant support, I love you guys. I also want to thank my Aunt Diane (Auntie Dee, LUMU). Without your support this would not have been possible. Thank you so much.
826 The last couple of months have been challenging and thanks to the loving staff at 826 Valencia I have felt like I have a little professional family right here in San Francisco. Thank you so much for picking me up when I was down, dusting me off and making me laugh again, and again.
Friends There are so many people that have helped me accomplish this in huge ways and small, and I appreciate each one of them from doing my dishes, helping me stay up later, giving me wake up calls, and running errands with me. Writing a list of names wouldn’t feel right, and would be just too long. So I will keep it simple and genuine. It has taken a village to get through this, and I love my village very very much. Thank you.
