Deregulation of the Energy Sector in the US Deregulation, in the energy sector, is the situation whereby the various components involved in the energy sector (from generation to consumption) are handled or provided by different entities. In the United States, residents and businesses living in a deregulated energy market can choose their energy provider. There are four key components involved in the energy sectors in the US. These are: 1. Power generating companies – These are those companies that generate the electricity or process the natural gas. 2. Retail Providers – They purchase the electricity or gas from the generating companies for onward delivery to local utility deliverers. Xoom Energy is such a retail provider. 3. Local Utility Deliverers – These exist in each local areas and contract retail providers for their quota of electricity or gas. They in turn supply them to end-consumers or users. 4. Local End Consumers – These are the final consumers of the electricity or gas. They may be residential customers or businesses.
