From The Publisher I get to meet so many amazing people in my job, but not many are as courageous or inspirational as Rosie Robertson.

She is a survivor of one of the most horrific cases of domestic violence I have ever heard. Shot in the head by her partner, she received a permanent brain injury and has had to teach herself to walk and talk all over again. Before her trauma she was a yoga teacher, and now, although she uses a walker to get around, she is teaching yoga again. But even more astounding than her determination to work, is her attitude to her experience.

The other concerning piece of news is the fact the sand mine operator already working on Newrybar Swamp Road, has taken double their allowable tonnage, without a peep from Council so far. Ski Jump Update The ski jump training facility drawings went on display late last month with a DA due to be submitted to Ballina Shire Council in the last week of March or early April.

Here are some key points from the March presentation: • It will be 35.5 metres high at its highest point • it will be made of steel (which will be painted) • There will be 6 jumps in total • There will be a larger-than-Olympic sized swimming pool • It will be used for training from April to October • Access for the public will be limited, but there may be some opportunities for locals to use it.

• It will take around 9 to 18 months to build (we have conflicting information on this).

• Existing tennis courts will now not be demolished.

• Estimated extra traffic movements - 9 per day • Predicted economic advantages to the town, but these are not quantified.

• It was described by one of the officials attending as looking like a large roller coaster. Diagrams seem to confim this.

Lennox locals are divided on this (again!), but there is a groundswell of opposition. Check out the Lennox Head Against The Ski Jumps Facebook page and watch Wave Weekly for more information.

Sand Miners Busted According to figures provided by Ballina council there has been a massive over extraction above approved limits from a sand mine just off Ross Lane in Newrybar.

In early December 2016 the ‘No Sand Mine for Lennox’ group was formed after one of its members became aware that a new 3.2 million tonne sand mine is being proposed for Newrybar Swamp Road, just off Ross Lane. That DA is expected to be lodged soon. But an existing sand mine is already operating there.

Concerned by the sheer size of the new proposed mine and the potential impact on traffic and environment, the group began investigating. They noted a significant recent increase in truck movements along Ross Lane and began to question Council regarding the existing sand mine in Newrybar Swamp Road.

After several requests, Ballina Shire Council revealed that the mine is well over its approved annual extraction limits.

Council also admitted that despite quarterly statements being submitted to the Council clearly outlining the over extraction, Council have not contacted the miners to discuss the matter, nor imposed any restrictions or fines.

‘This sand mine is a blight on the landscape,’ says Macadamia Castle owner Tony Gilding. ‘The council has been part of a program to promote Hinterland Way as an iconic tourist drive.

One of the most beautiful flood plains in Australia is being mined and it looks terrible...this type of development should occur West of the highway and not between the highway and the ocean.’

‘We would like to question whether Council understands or is monitoring the impact on the very sensitive Newrybar Swamp and North Creek. The over extraction of 115,000 tonnes of material means that there has been about 115 million litres of water displaced,’ said Newrybar resident and Ballina Greens member Nathan Cooper.

‘I am calling on our Council to do its job and protect our environment within the limits of the law. These guys set the sand mine’s quotas in the first place but appear to willingly ignore them,’ said Mr Cooper.

Based on those statements we estimate that there have been an extra 18,000 truck movements east and west on Ross Lane in 2016 which equates to 62 additional truck movements per day. ‘No Sand Mines for Lennox is concerned with the additional trucks,’ said local resident Amelia Hicks.

On 6 March we welcomed almost 100 attendees to our Annual General and monthly meetings in the Community Centre Auditorium, provided by Ballina Shire Council (BSC) Community Spaces at concession.

Congratulations to our new Executive team of President Monica Wilcox (defeated Jim Gilchrist), Vice President Shaun Eastment, Secretary Bob Wilcox, Treasurer Tom Berry and Public Officer Geoffrey Wegg (all elected unopposed) plus Committee members Malcolm Milner, Jane Leete and Kelly Saunderson.

In his final President’s report, Graham Shaw spoke of many LHRA Inc achievements and future challenges including finalization of the Lake Ainsworth precinct, community consultation for the Village Renewal Plan, proposed Ski Jump facility at Sport and Recreation, proposed Newrybar Swamp Road Sand Mining, Ocean Breeze and Williams Reserves plans.

Graham said his decision to step down from any Association executive role was influenced directly by disparate groups with opposing views to specific issues and the nature, methodology and processes of the conduct of Association business. He emphasized, ‘the Association is not a vehicle to contest aggressively with Council,’ rather to work collaboratively to achieve best outcomes on positions determined by its members. He added that ‘objectivity and fairness are the hallmarks of respect.’

Newrybar Swamp Road Sand Mining. Amelia Hicks of the No Sand Mine for Lennox group, advised that the proposed new sand mine on the eastern side of Newrybar Swamp Road anticipates extracting 3.2 million tonnes over 25 years in an area triple the size of Lake Ainsworth. Truck movements could be 640 daily. Concerns are environmental compliance, damage to the land, potential increased flooding, water contamination, road safety and damage, noise and exhaust pollution.

Landmarks Of Lennox

Pat Morton Lookout On 26 March 1977 the lookout atop Lennox Headland, offering an iconic view north along Seven Mile Beach towards Cape Byron, was opened by its namesake, Pat (Philip Henry) Morton. The long awaited coast road between Ballina and Lennox Head was simultaneously declared open.

Now a launch pad for hang and para gliders and vantage point to watch surfers and whales, the land was donated by John (Jack) Stuart Easter specifically for a viewing spot. Owner of the property from 1953, the former Member for Lismore (1953-59), found that ‘a road through the middle made it very awkward to run as a dairy farm.’

Pat Morton (1910-1999) attended Lismore Primary and High Schools, living with his parents near St Carthage’s Cathedral until 1925.

Following his father’s (Arthur Richmond) interest in local politics, he later became Mayor of Mosman in 1945, MLA for Mosman 1947-72, Opposition Leader 1955-59 and Minister for Local Government and Highways 1965-72.

During these latter years, he became associated with development of the coast road after receiving a deputation from Tintenbar Shire Council in 1970.

Seemingly enamoured of the area, Pat Morton contributed $2,500 towards establishment of the lookout.

On the 40th anniversary, it is timely to acknowledge the community minded generosity of Messrs Easter and Morton whose legacy is public access to this stunning site.

Mental Health Forum On Sunday 23 April, the important issue of mental health will be discussed in an interactive workshop at Park Lane Theatre, Lennox Community Centre.

Dubbed the ‘Movement Revolution Man’, Lennox local and personal trainer Trent Chapman has teamed up with NRL Mental Health Ambassador and Director of Mental Health Movement, Dan Hunt formerly of the St George Illawarra Dragons, to present a free community event talking everything Mental Health.

Statistics show that fifty percent of the Australian population will go through poor mental health at some stage in their life, and four out of five know someone that will.

Public speaking is indeed a very deep seated fear for many people. Like all skills, it can be taught, learnt and mastered.

The ability to address a group of people in a succinct and thoughtful manner, whilst not being overcome by fear is a skill that Lennox Lightning Toastmasters are very keen to share.

Lennox Lightning and Toastmaster International provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members and visitors are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

The Speech Craft course is designed with this ethos in place, and will encourage participants to speak and to evaluate one another in a supportive environment. The best way to learn is to do, so there will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to actually get up and speak in a non-threatening environment.

Speech Craft at Lennox Toastmasters, begins on Tuesday 2nd of May, 2017 and runs for 4 Tuesdays commencing at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. Investment will be $120 per participant, which covers all course materials and learning. The course will be run at The Anglican church in Fern Street, Lennox Head. Besides being entertaining, festivals and events like the Love Lennox Festival in June and the Lennox Head Business Awards in July offer a host of economic and social benefits to this community. The economic benefits of festivals are easiest to see and most often mentioned. Festivals attract visitors, stimulating the growth of tourism and other businesses in our town.

The best thing about being involved with festivals and events is the opportunity to help build a community, foster a sense of pride within a community, and engage a community. Honestly, I’ve never found something outside a community event that can do that to the same degree.

We all know that hometown pride is a critical factor in the development and improvement of any community. Residents with community pride are more likely to speak positively about their town to others and to volunteer with organizations and activities that support the common good.

Assuming everything else goes well, the payoff to this relationship-building is a prosperous day. But the benefits last well beyond the event, as people bring their connections and collective knowledge and skills to develop the community.

Connections are the glue that gel communities together.

Without them, a community goes stale and the quality of life drops. Experts call this glue social capital, so viewed through this lens, festival and event sponsorship grows the social capital that makes for healthy communities.

As ‘Lennoxers’, we like to think we bring a genuine sincerity that our event participants really pick up on. We love where we live and so we focus on events that showcase the best our area has to offer, and we also just get to be ourselves. We don’t try to be something we’re not, and people react really well to that.

A New Local ‘Personal Care Drive’ is Launched and Needs Your Support.

FSG Australia (FSG) and the Richmond Tweed Regional Library of the Northern Rivers area of NSW, have partnered to launch the ‘Personal Care Drive’. A community initiative to assist locals who are struggling to meet basic everyday personal care needs. And they are now reaching out to the community to help.

The project will help people who do not currently have the capacity to access everyday personal care items like toothpaste, soap, shampoo & feminine hygiene products. These become a luxury when your ability to access them is restricted by current circumstances.

‘For someone who may be experiencing a challenge in their lives, such as homelessness, and has not been able to wash their hair for weeks, to be able to do that freely can be life changing.

We cannot underestimate the impact meeting a person’s basic needs may have on them. It may just give them the confidence they need to attend a property viewing, a medical appointment or a job interview, without worrying

What is yarn bombing? Yarn bombing, also known as guerrilla knitting, is a type of street art in which trees, poles, bus stops and other public structures are decorated with colourful displays of knitting and crochet. The Lennox MakerSpace craft group, which meets in the Lennox Head Library every second Thursday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, is looking for new members to help with its various craft projects including yarn bombing the Lennox Library and Community Centre in time for the Love Lennox Festival in June 2017. This year’s yarn bombing theme is events that have affected the Lennox Head region in the past year. Suitable subjects might include sharks and shark nets, bushfires, heatwaves, surfing, ski-jumps, traffic lights and the re-development of Lake Ainsworth. If you are interested in joining the MakerSpace group, or would like to contribute to the yarn bombing project in some way, please call the Lennox Head Library on 66876398.

Mobility Matting After months of research and negotiations — not to mention over a year of fundraising — Tracey Everingham Armstrong has secured $13,000 towards the purchase of mobility matting for Ballina. (costing $19,200) Mobility Matting is designed to give people in wheelchairs or using sticks or walking frames access to the beach.

It is a durable, portable and removable rollout access pathway, that can be laid across sand.

Tracey is gifting the matting to disability service provider, Northcott, who will take ownership and responsibility for it.

It will be housed at Ballina Surf Life Saving Club and rolled out when the beach is patrolled (holidays, weekends, summer breaks) by the surf life savers on duty.

LAUNCH The launch of the mat will be at 10 am on Saturday 29 April at Ballina Surf Life Saving Club at Lighthouse Beach.

Big Dog Television will be there! Plus there will be entertainment from Horace Bevan and band (Tracey will probably sing a number or two!), plus sausage sizzle and a word from the Mayor. NBN will be there. It’s a kid-friendly event, so tell your friends.

Well, the 2017 local Youth of the Year Competition was a resounding success thanks to Lion Helen and her willing band of helpers. The standard of entrants in every aspect of this quest was of a very high calibre. The Public Speaking component produced some entertaining and well-presented oratory on a wide variety of topics. Finn Ball spoke on Flags of the World, Sam Fawcett on The Importance of Learning a Second Language, Lucy Turner on Why Feminism is still Important, Erin Smekel on The Gender Pay Gap in Sports, Zoe Reeve on Languages and William Rogers spoke about volunteering. The winner of the Public Speaking component was Zoe Reeve from Xavier Catholic College.

However, there was also a stringent interview session that had to be faced by each student that contributed to their overall assessment. The overall winner of the Lennox Head Lions Youth of the Year competition was Finn Ball from Alstonville High School. He went on to the regional level which was won

by Lydia O’Neill from Kingscliff High School. Freowini Baume from Trinity won the public speaking section.

Our Movie Premiere Night fundraiser was a great success. After a premovie drink and something to eat, we viewed the well-received Jasper Jones.

At their March meeting Lennox Head VIEW Club Celebrated International Women’s Day. The tables were set with place mats that depicted photos of famous women and decorated with the colours of International Women’s Day reflecting the early suffragettes’ cause, to give women votes. The history of the celebration was read reminding members of the marches for ‘Bread and Roses’ with bread symbolizing economic security and roses for a better quality of life, and the deaths of 140 workers in a terrible fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York due to the lack of safety measures. Members heard too that Australia was the second country in the world to grant women the vote.

At the VIEW meeting a candle was lit, one that had been crafted for the Club by the Nimbin Candle Factory and marbled in the colours of International Women’s Day. The candle was lit by Marie Rule the President of the inaugural Lennox Head VIEW Club in memory of the suffering of the women of the past. The Club’s International Women’s Day Award was presented to Joy Gregor for her dedicated work for VIEW. The guest speaker was 90 year old Caroline Pinter who told us about her early life and escape during the Russian invasion of Romania.

Damien Leith After a sold-out run of ROY – A Tribute To Roy Orbison to metropolitan centres in 2016, singer-songwriter Damien Leith is gearing up to revisit the music of his idol Roy Orbison this year, taking the show to regional Australia, and dropping in on Lennox Head.

‘I’m a country boy at heart, originating from a small village in Ireland called Milltown, so regional tours are special to me,’ he says. ‘Touring in regional areas around Australia is an amazing experience. I always meet great salt to the earth people and the whole vibe and atmosphere in a show is electric.

Audiences really appreciate you being there and there is always a great sense of community.’

The tour commemorates 30 years since Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock n Roll and Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

Damien says he will be performing songs such as In Dreams, Crying to Running Scared, Oh Pretty Woman and

Blue Angel, to name a few. The show is jam-packed with as many Roy songs that can be fitted into the set list.

‘This show is a favourite of mine because, I get to stand on stage and celebrate Roy’s incredible career,’ says Damien. ‘I don’t try to impersonate him or sound like him, its really a case of me saluting one of the all-time greatest singers. Roy’s songs are raw and real and melded together with that distinct melancholy intensity of his voice. He created a unique way of writing and delivering a song, and it’s for that reason that to this day, he continues to find new fans all over the world.’

April LAC Artist Every month or two the Lennox Arts Collective (LAC) invites a new local artist to exhibit their work in one half of the gallery.

The space is impressive, with one long wall and two short, and it provides an ideal opportunity for artists to get the exposure they so desperately need.

Just like Lennox Head needs LAC. For April and May that artist is Jan Gannon.

Jan is based in Lennox Head and has been involved with art and craft in many

forms from the age of 4. Colour, texture and form have always intrigued her and she is always happy creating, be it in the kitchen, the garden or in her studio. The world of fabric and embroidery have also been great palettes for her to work on.

Being introduced to silk painting had a profound effect on her and she readily embraced the blending of vibrant colours involved in the techniques. Exploring oil painting is another medium she enjoys.

Now she has discovered this amazing world of inks and resins and is loving the uniqueness of how the pieces vary and how each one comes alive as it develops.

Her wish is that you enjoy the results as much as she enjoys the creation of her work.

Come and meet Jan and see her work on Friday 28 April from 5.30 for the opening of the exhibition.

Khanun By Mimi Local massage therapist, Chelhie, has moved into the old Coastal Podiatry office next door to Seed & Husk. She says she is loving the new premises, and finds the two-room clinic perfect for her needs.

Mary Lee has two passions in life: a designer’s eye for creativity, and a love of animals, big and small, but particularly those that need rescuing or are endangered as a species.

At only 19, after many years of working and volunteering with animals in Australia and completing her zoology certificate at TAFE, Mary left Australia to volunteer overseas, firstly at the Surin Project in the North East of Thailand.

This project helps to rescue elephants and provide sustainable alternatives for their care, free from abuse. From there Mary went to Borneo to work with Orang-utans, and then to South Africa and Namibia to work with wild animals.

It’s a trip she will never forget.

Now, a few years later, Mary has named her new clothing business Khanun, after an elephant she helped rescue in Thailand. She says that she formed a very close bond with Khanun and will never forget her.

Her clothing business is based upon principles of recycling and she hopes it will encourage people to buy clothes that are not mass produced overseas by child labour.

‘I like to know where anything I buy is from and how it is produced,’ she says.

‘Forever I haven’t been able to afford an amazing dress worth $300, and funnily enough produced overseas for 50c, so I decided to make my own.

‘I’ve been collecting fabrics for years — vintage, crochet and upholstery, one-of a kind materials that you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve developed several simple patterns, and taught myself to sew. I’ve saved enough to get the right machines, including a $1300 industrial sewing machine.

‘I’ve had amazing role models to teach me here and there, sewing tips and tricks when I’ve been stuck or when Youtube couldn’t show me the way.

Rachel Legan (clothes designer from Milton NSW) gave me a huge bag of 60s and 70s fabrics to play with. Local, Debbie Gordon, who used to own Trash has also taught me many tricks of the trade.’

The Station Grocer It’s been about six months now, since the Lennox servo was renovated and transformed into The Station Grocer, a food and convenience store with an emphasis on fresh local produce.

It seems there’s not much they don’t stock here, from fresh local fruit and veg, bakery bread, groceries, take home meals, take away food, to freshly ground barista made coffee and they even have flowers delivered fresh daily and arranged by the girls in store.

The Station Grocer is owned by a Lennox family and employs about 15 other locals, it is run by Joel Rudgley (Manger) and Liza Captain (Assistant Manager). Between them they divide the tasks according to their strengths.

Liza admits she’s an organiser, so she takes care of ordering and working with suppliers, ensuring that everything is always in stock. Joel is a people person, and takes on more of the front-of-house responsibilities, plus staffing, which he says ‘is not too difficult, because we let them find their niche and fit into the routine as they go.’

According to Joel, ‘We try to stock as much local produce as we can, right down to meat from the Lennox Butcher, icecream from Lennox Gelato, curries from Yellow Flower and vegetarian meals from Heart and Halo in Byron. We stock small local growers and producers who might not get a chance with some of the bigger players.’

And, says Liza, ‘We also make a lot of our takeaway food in house, Nathan is in the kitchen from 5am everyday making sandwiches, rolls, wraps, salads and of course his breaky buritos and bacon and egg rolls. We bake our own muffins and the free range chickens are cooked on site.’

Perhaps one of the best things about the Station Grocer is its opening hours. In fact it seems the place is hardly ever closed, with a 365 day commitment (yes, that’s right Christmas Day and Good Friday) from 5 am to 11 pm.

Not surprisingly the place has built up a strong local customer base.

‘Yes’, says Joel, ‘we have some great local regulars who make our day. And some fabulous staff too.’

Infinity Yoga Rosanna Robertson is a yoga teacher from Sydney with a story like no other.

In 2007, she was living with her partner in Newtown, Sydney. She had been teaching yoga for several years, and was running the corporate yoga for the local TAFE college.

Although her job was great, her home life was toxic. Her partner, who suffered from schizophrenia, was abusing her, and she was stuck in a cycle of domestic violence.

‘He was quite nasty to me, he beat me sometimes, but I really believed I could help him,’ she says.

‘One day he showed me a gun and I grabbed my son and we went to my mother’s. But I really didn’t believe he would ever use it, so I went home the next morning, and my partner and I went out to dinner that night.

‘When we finished eating we stood up to leave and he sort of grabbed the back of my shirt and steered me out. We went around the corner into a lane and he shot me point blank in the back of the head, and left me there.’

Rosie remained conscious for 2 hours in the alleyway. She realised that she was hidden behind cars where she would

never be found, and so had to crawl ‘commando style’ toward the road where she knew she would be seen.

‘I can remember I had the sensation that my brain was starting to shut down, so I had to use all my effort to breathe and remain focused. When I was finally discovered by a security guard, he thought I was drunk, because there was no blood. ’ She spent 10 days in a drug induced coma, 1 month in intensive care, 3 months in hospital, and 6 months in rehab.

‘I’ve never been angry at him. In fact in a strange way when it happened I was a little bit relieved because I knew otherwise I was never going to give up on him.’

While her partner was given an 11 year jail sentence, Rosie has been left with a life-long brain injury that affects movement and speech. She must walk with a metal walking frame, and while her vocabulary is normal, her speech is sometimes slow or slurred. Her mind, however, is as sharp as ever, and her sense of good humour in tact.

Perhaps that is why Rosie has bounced back, and is once again teaching yoga.

‘Yoga is my passion. Even when I was unable to move, lying in bed in hospital,

I would do the poses in my head,’ she says. ‘As soon as I could I did some yoga classes in rehab.

Rosie is teaching yoga to intellectually and physically challenged people in Ballina through FSG. She is also offering classes to people with a disability or injury at the Anglican Church Lennox Head, but insists anyone is welcome to join them.

She cannot drive, and must use a walking frame to get around, but Rosie catches the bus everywhere.

‘I like to be really independent,’ she says. See her ad on page 6.

As the surfers would say Lennox Point’s been going off lately! You may have noticed that our Landcare site with the pick of the views has undergone some impressive transformations over the last couple of years, particularly in the area below The Quarter Deck apartments.

And, you may also have noticed a couple of blokes out there planting, watering, mulching, weeding or seed collecting every other day? These two, who don’t wish to be named, are the driving force behind much of the recent works at Lennox Point – and it appears their enthusiasm is contagious!

Last month Lennox Head Landcare hosted a National Tree Planting Day in the area just below The Quarter Deck – 850 plants were planted by around 60 volunteers. It was a great outcome and we all look forward to watching these babies grow. Since then, another 300 have been planted.

But here’s the real news – the majority of the plants that we planted were paid for by private donators. The Quarter Deck donated $500 towards the cost of the plants and the remainder was paid for by a philanthropist who also doesn’t wish to be named. Actually, there have been many plantings in this area that have been paid for by this particular philanthropist, who has donated $2500 to the Lennox Point works so far!

And there’s more - we’ve also had donations from other community members of home grown local native plants, hoses, a brushcutter and a wheelbarrow. These gestures of generosity not only boosts the morale of the group but gives us the means to get out there and get the work done without relying on the sometimes lengthy process of attaining government funding.

Council have also come to the party at the Point by supplying mulch and plants, setting up access to water and providing ground works, drainage and technical support. They have also engaged contractors to carry out additional planting works further up towards Pat Morton Reserve.

The current momentum of the works at the Point has been pushed along by the collaborative approach taken by Lennox Head Landcare. Particular efforts have also gone into making the right plant

choices so the views of neighbouring properties are not impeded. We’re hoping that the outcome of all this hard work will be a beautiful natural space that the residents, the wildlife and the community will all be happy with.

If you’d like to volunteer or donate to this project or any of our other projects please contact us. Working bees on the Pinnacle Row site are organised once a month-ish on a Sunday arvo.

Wouldn’t Be Dead For Quids angela Hitzke

We bought this 5 star rabbit hutch for only $50 at a garage sale. It was in perfect condition, and as a freebie, they threw a rabbit in as well, a little too eagerly I thought.

Dave organised the pick up and I asked him to be careful as I didn’t want the hutch to end up like the mirror I bought.

He said, ‘Babe relax, stop panicking.’

So he and his mate Pelo collected the hutch facing it forwards on the back of the ute with Bugsy the rabbit sitting inside.

One thing the boys overlooked was Newton’s third law: if object A exerts a force on object B, then object B must exert a force of equal magnitude and opposite direction back on object A. Loosely, in layman’s terms, Pelo driving at full throttle forced air over the ute and this combination resulted in a wind that

ripped the hutch roof clean off its hinges and sent it cartwheeling down the road.

No need to go into what was said when I found out.

Pelo reattached the roof then left. We soon discovered our cute, big eyed, tiny rabbit loved biting, like some type of vampire rabbit smuggled in from Transylvania.

I now realised the garage sale people were ecstatic not eager. Bugsy bit everyone hard, causing blood, tears and trauma. My kids stopped going near him, friends suggested setting him free at the beach with the other million rabbits and the vet quoted me for the deep sleep injection. I couldn’t do either.

But Dave had had enough. One night he smuggled Bugsy down the road and tossed him over the hedge into farmland.

A week later, driving home with my kids I pointed to the electrical pole near the hedge and said, ‘That’s where Dave said he released Bugsy.’

Curran said, ‘The pole where that rabbit is standing?’

I veered off the road, slammed on the brakes and all four of us peered over.

It was Bugsy, watching and waiting, hoping his family would find him.

I said to Curran, ‘Oh for god sakes just go and get him, he’s coming home.’

We then drove off with Bugsy sitting up the front riding shotgun, and looking mighty pleased.

Dave came home, saw the hutch with Bugsy smiling at him (and probably giving him the finger) and for someone who’s normally quite articulate Dave could only manage, ‘What the...Is that...

How did...?’

I said, ‘Don’t ask.’

It has become clear to me that I am ok with technology. But there are some things that still trouble me. For instance, I’m not really sure how to pronounce the word ‘meme.’ I’m mad for Netflix and Stan, SBS on demand and ABC IView, I’ve even worked out how to watch them on the tele. Start talking to me about streaming, uploading, downloading and all arounding and I feel like I’ve landed in a foreign country.

I have a twitter account, follow no-one and only set it up because a politician upset me so much on Q and A that I felt obliged to comment. Only problem was, by the time I set it up and worked out that my hashtags wouldn’t work if I used correct punctuation, Tony Jones had long said goodnight and I had yet to chirp, let alone Tweet.

One of my mates showed me Tinder one day, which I thought must get awkward living in a rural area. The pressure of swiping correctly on your cousin, neighbour and mum’s best friend’s daughter is certainly more intense than getting drunk, trying to dance and pretending you have feelings you’re keen to discuss.

I’m of that age that when I went to University, Introduction to Computing was a foundation subject in first year. An admission that if you had managed to make it this far academically, it was probably wise that you knew how to type an assignment using a form of word processing. Comic Sans was popular at the time.

So, I’m there, or thereabouts, when it comes to technology. My Mum though has 30 odd years on me and the transition has not been as smooth. Recently she bought another mobile phone.

This, after the last one stopped working. We actually don’t know if it ever worked, as it sat on the charger for about three and a half years, without making a call.

This latest phone though, is by comparison, being worked into a frenzy. It’s what they call a ‘Seniors’ Phone’: big numbers, good for ringing people, text-if-you-must, kind of phone.

The problem is that someone at Friends of The Library taught my mother to text. I use the word ‘taught’ loosely. Somewhere during the process Mum learnt txt spk, or should I say TXT SPK, because she can’t turn the capital letters off. She has also perfected the pocket call so I often answer the phone only to hear a muffled stroll through Aldi.

Perhaps most astonishing though, and I think it’s a feature specific to the Seniors’ phone, there is a button on the back which when pressed sends a text message to everyone in your address book (just me in Mum’s case), which says. ‘Emergency, please help me.’ Mum thought the button was a send button to be pressed at the end of the text. Fortunately as it wasn’t all in capital letters I knew she was ok, but if anyone sees her on Tinder, for the love of God, please swipe appropriately.

Have you ever wondered why things happen the way they do?

By this I mean, the kind of moments that are mind-bogglingly crazy, and yet as seemingly, surreal as they might be, somehow they are meant to be. I am almost certain many of us have experienced those unexpected events in our lives. For some of us they occur more than once.

In January, I had one such crazy ‘pinch myself’ moment. Being in Washington DC, I was ready to witness history in the making at the Presidential Inauguration Parade.

That day, the streets were abuzz with a multitude of people and barricades. Queues stretched so far and wide, it was almost impossible to get anywhere close... almost.

Love was everywhere. A few lads nearby, invited my sidekick and I to queue jump, having taken pity on the ‘cripz’ (that’s short for ‘cripples’ and what we’ve nicknamed ourselves).

The crowd parted like Moses parting the sea, and we moved to the front.

Moses’ sea parted again that evening, when us cripz were standing less than 50 feet from the newly inaugurated President Trump. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined attending the exclusive The Armed Forces Inauguration Ball! The calibre of people in that room was amazing!

Following official proceedings, a man approached us. He had a regal, yet extremely down-to-earth, presence. He smiled warmly, shaking our hands, introducing himself as ‘General’.

The General initiated an instant conversation. Upon discovering I was Australian, he was elated and spent 15 minutes taking a keen interest in my background. We jovially exchanged some adventure tales. Upon which, my dear sidekick and I ribbed him for visiting Oz 25 times and not trying Vegemite!

At the time we did not know that General was Four Star Major General John Kelly, President Trump’s right hand man, and The Secretary of US Homeland Security.

Major General Kelly, concluded our conversation by saying to me, ‘America needs teachers like you here. We’d love to have you, even through Australia would be at a loss to lose you.’

This is a moment I will never forget. Often people are not as black and white (or orange) in reality. It’s not a picnic to take the path we are destined to lead with sticks, but treacherous roads can be repaved.

It was an honour for my 4 legs to be in the midst of the US Nation’s best. I was exactly where I was meant to be. I am where I am meant to be.

Ocean Rhythms

The only thing you can truly rely on when making a forecast is that sooner or later reality is going to make a fool of you by dishing up exactly the opposite of what you called. In this case, the prediction that the dry, flat period we experienced all summer would continue was comprehensively mocked by the first flush of Autumn, which saw a week of small clean E swell, followed by a pumping swell caused by a semi-stationary low in the Tasman and now bucket loads of rain are falling out of the sky.

The axis of the Tasman low sat to the south of us, driving a week of swell from the SSE to ESE and accompanied by S’ly winds. This was enough impetus for all the sand slugs which had built up inshore over summer to get a major shunt, with most of it ending up exactly where it should be this time of year: carpeting the Point breaks and vastly improving wave quality. Just about every Point break in the region was enhanced by the sand flow, with some seeing the first real sand increase since the June black nor-easter swell last year.

As long as we don’t get a major system from the ENE or NE to knock it out, that sand should settle and provide a stable platform for a tubular autumn. Here’s hoping.

The week of clean E swell prior to the Tasman low saw blue warm water push into the coast and with it came baitfish and pelagics. Big hook-ups were on the cards for those willing to put the time in at our exposed rock platforms that intrude into

the oceanic currents. Local rock fisho Trev got connected to a chunky longtail tuna with muggins on hand to help land the fish (again). Tailor, some of them XOS were also in chasing garfish and aggressively hitting lures and baits off the rocks.

The warm water also pushed into the river with whiting and trevally on offer on the incoming tides. That’s changed now after current rainfall with the Richmond in a moderate fresh and dirty water likely for the next 2 weeks, at least. It’s to be hoped that the current push by well meaning people to rehabilitate the Richmond River can eventually lead to a vastly improved water quality for this much loved but very degraded water-way. It’s going to be a long road with a lot of work to be done. But it can be done. Thats all for this month, see ya on the stones or in the water.

LW – There aren’t many four wheel drives like this one Jake, what’s the story?

Jake – Well I’m part owner of TJM Northern Rivers and we deck out cars, mostly four wheel drives with custom accessories so I had to build a company vehicle we could use as a demo vehicle.

Not to mention the fact I just wanted the ultimate set up that I could use. I love going off road exploring so why not do it in style?

LW – You sure do have some gear on there, can you tell us about it?

Jake – There is over $30000 worth of extras. The obvious stuff is things like towbar, bull bar, side steps, snorkel, offroad rims and tyres. It is also set

up to be a fully self sufficient camping machine with a roof top tent, awning, solar, batteries, water supply, fridge, UHF, sat nav and so much more. It pretty much has everything.

LW – So do you get away in it much?

Jake – Yeah, quite a few weekends. As part of my business promotion I like to take a group of people away to remote spots, we go in convoy and make a camping weekend of it. Get the cars dirty and go home. Customers love it and it often ends up in a few extra sales when people see what bits and pieces

Mixed Bag of Vet Treats This month I thought I would have a brief discussion of a couple of issues that are currently occupying us at the Lennox Head Vet Clinic, amongst the usual background of puppies, kittens, mayhem and coffee. The first is a big spike in the number of pet Bunnies that need vaccinating for the deadly Rabbit Calici Virus. The second is what seems an unusually high number of pets needing dental work under general anaesthetic, for no particular reason.

FIRSTLY, the release of RHDV-K5 (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Korean Strain 5), or Calici Virus, and the resulting run on rabbit vaccines. We certainly have seen an increase in the requests for this vaccine, and for good reason, as it’s a rapidly fatal disease spread by flying insects and direct contact.

However, Calici Virus of rabbits has been around for over a decade after being originally released to help control the feral rabbit population. Over the years the wild rabbit population has become more resistant to the original strain. The DPI released this new strain a few weeks back in order to impact the resistant feral rabbit population more effectively.

However, the older strain is just as deadly to domestic rabbits!

We have been advising a yearly vaccination to pet bunnies since the first virus was released ages ago. In fact, the most recent large mortality due to the original virus in wild rabbits in this area was around Christmas last year.

The difference is that the new strain needs 6 monthly boosters,

not yearly as in the past. Rabbits never before vaccinated need an initial booster 4 weeks after the first.

SECONDLY, let’s talk teeth! All our pets need special care of their teeth, (or beaks, as the case may be). Oral health is extremely important to pets for a variety of reasons, and a mouth full of damaged or infected teeth is a common cause of poor health and quality of life. In some cases , bad teeth can be fatal with such conditions as Heart valve disease, kidney disease, ocular disease, septicaemia and abcesses all being linked to poor dental health. Add to this the pain of inflamed gums and periodontal disease, and eye-wateringly bad halitosis due to rotten teeth and gums, and its easy to see that maintaining a healthy oral cavity is of prime importance.

Owners of pets of all species should be aware that since our animal friends live much longer in captivity (in general) than in the wild, no matter what you do there will probably be a time when your pet needs some dental intervention. Most pets past middle age will require some dental intervention at some stage, but there’s some things you can do to help delay the inevitable deterioration. Regular raw bones often come to mind, but surprisingly this is neither consistently effective or safe. There are a number of options that we can discuss.

Dear Sarah My dog really stresses when we’re not home. The neighbours say that she barks the whole time we are gone. We think she’s got Separation Anxiety. What can we do?

Mitch M Hi Mitch, Dogs who display signs of anxiety when their humans aren’t home are suffering from something known as Separation Distress. In some cases, there can be a medical cause (so make sure that you get a full health check done by your vet). In most cases, Separation Distress can usually be split into two main categories: Separation Anxiety and anxiety about being alone.

Anxiety about being alone occurs when the dog isn’t used to being on its own. This sometimes occurs in puppies who spend lots of time with their humans when they are first brought home (often during Christmas School Holidays), and then at the end of January when everyone goes back to work and school, start to display anxiety behaviours such as barking, digging, howling, crying, escaping or destructive behaviour when left alone.

Usually with this type of anxiety, ensuring that the dog has been exercised in the morning, has lots of things to keep them busy and has company at some point during the day can make a big difference. As can leaving the radio or TV going (so that they hear human voices), or utilising a dog walker or doggie daycare service throughout the day. Getting another pet can also be helpful, as well as slowly and gradually desensitizing them to longer and longer periods of time on their own.

True Separation Anxiety is where the animal exhibits anxiety when separated from his/her person(s). With this type of anxiety the dog will still feel anxious even with the presence of other company. This is more difficult to treat and essentially comes from a place of over-attachment. Forcing separation is not the answer, as it just makes the problem worse. In fact, many of these dogs need to be on medication during the treatment process.

Separation Anxiety is distressing for both the dog and owner (and neighbours!). Living Simply With Lois

LENTIL SOUP INGREDIENTS ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 1 stalk of celery, chopped 1 small orange sweet potato 1 small potato 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped or crushed 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1/2 cup fresh, chopped parsley 1 large can diced tomatoes, drained ( or tomato passata ) 2 cups cooked brown or green lentils, (OR 3 cans of lentils) use more if you like 1 litre of vegetable stock 1 teaspoon salt, more to taste Freshly chopped chilli Freshly ground black pepper Juice of ½ to 1 medium lemon, to taste 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind.

INSTRUCTIONS Warm the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Olive oil adds a lovely richness and heartiness to this nutritious soup.

OSTEOPATH

Add the chopped onion then the celery and carrot ,sweet potato and potato.

Cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened and is turning translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, cumin, Cook until fragrant while stirring constantly, about 30 seconds. Pour in the drained diced tomatoes or passata and cook for a few more minutes, stirring often, in order to enhance their flavor.

Pour in the lentils, vegetable stock and extra water if too thick. Add 1 teaspoon salt and a finely chopped chilli . Season generously with freshly ground black pepper. Raise heat and bring the mixture to the boil, then partially cover the pot and reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for 30 minutes, or until the lentils (if using fresh ones) are cooked but still have their shape.

Remove the pot from heat and stir in the juice of half of a lemon and a little finely grated lemon rind.

Taste and season with more salt, pepper and/or lemon juice until the flavors really sing. Serve immediately.

Bucket List Living I had a ‘bucket list’ before they were cool. In fact, I don’t think the term bucket list was even around then.

But, as I sat there as a 22-year-old in the kitchen of my house that I had purchased from my parents who had divorced and left the duties of raising my 11 year old brother to me, I knew that I wanted to DO stuff.

And by ‘stuff,’ I didn’t mean just go drinking and pick up girls with my mates every weekend or follow the traditional unijob-marry-baby route. I wanted to do FUN stuff. Stuff that I wouldn’t look back at the end of my life and wish I had done.

So I made a ‘Life To Do’ list that included everything from surfing pipeline, writing and singing my own country music, to traveling the east coast of Australia and finding the perfect place. It had 60 items that were completely crazy in nature, ss any bucket list worth its salt should be.

But then, life happened, starting with raising my younger brother. Fast forward to 2017, where I’m a little bit older and I still haven’t checked most of the items off the list. In fact, I think I have only checked off half without thinking about it.

The good news, however, is I still have the list. And more importantly… I have more motivation than ever to finish it.

After watching my dear friend (who was also my Mentor) pass away from cancer just six weeks after his diagnosis, it became clear to me; you truly don’t know how much time you have left.

Why are we all waiting around to live… ‘til we’re older, ‘til we retire, ‘til we get married, ‘til the kids are grown, ‘til we have more money…? So I have dusted off the list, made just a few slight changes (I couldn’t really care less about reading at least 1 book about each religion or visiting Universal Studios) and I have set out with a new conviction to get the list done!

And now, not only is my bucket list well on its way to getting marked off, but I now consider ‘bucket list living’ a way of life!

Bucket list living means being present, remembering how precious life is. Taking chances, believing in your dreams.

So I say, live the dream dust off that list or create one! Finding the perfect place on the east coast ‘Tick’!

It took me 4 years to step back on the court after a knee rebuild in 2013. Putting the ball back in my hands 6 weeks ago was an unbelievable feeling! I was back at my happy place, the place I forever felt comfortable, the place I spent my whole childhood; the basketball court. I was a bit rusty after all the time away but as I gave my best mate a hi-5 after warm up I said ‘I’m back, I’m feeling good, expect a big game, I’m ready to go!’ The first 3 quarters I put up a solid performance then with 4 minutes to go before the game was out I heard a sound I never wanted to hear again; my ligament snapping! Instantly my heart sank knowing the road of rehab that was ahead of me.

After only 2 weeks of trying to manage life I’ve hit a dark hole mentally. Having functional exercise taken away from me is like taking away my medication, it changes me as a person not having that outlet! I need the endorphins that exercise brings, I need them. They define me!

Whilst I know it’s only temporary and there are plenty far worse off I can’t help but feel frustrated. Upset with myself thinking I should have known that would happen, why did I get back on the court? These thoughts don’t do me any favours, therefore I’m making a conscious choice to only draw on useful beliefs during this time. I’ve had to look at what I can do not what I can’t do. I’m choosing to see the glass half full not half empty and using this time to draw more gratitude into my life as opposed to drawing negativity from my own thoughts. It’s easier said than done, but times like this I must remember my self worth and that my resilience and adversity will see me through this.

As a good friend reminded me today, bravery is showing mental strength when faced with difficulty. If you’re on a similar journey to mine right now I encourage you to be brave, stick with useful beliefs, educate yourself on positive mental health and look at what you can do not what you can’t. Half full not half empty.

Home Alchemy Most people think of alchemy as an ancient medieval practice where practitioners sought to turn lead into gold.

Either way it is a tradition steeped in mystery and magic - a seemingly miraculous power or process of changing a thing from something ordinary into something better.

Whilst this is true, it is also an overly simplistic view of what we now know to be several philosophical traditions that actually spanned across three continents and over four millennia.

At least three major strands have been identified - Chinese Alchemy, Indian Alchemy and Mediterranean Alchemy (where the centre shifted from GrecoRoman Egypt, to the Islamic world, to finally medieval Europe).

Shrouded in secrecy and mystery there are still questions around whether any of the strands share a common origin, or to what extent they influenced each other.

Chinese alchemy was connected with Taoism and Indian alchemy with Dharmic faiths, whereas Western alchemy developed its own philosophical system mostly independent of, but influenced by various Western religions.

Angela Hitzke Is...

Family Day Care Educator at Frangipani Day Care Birthplace: Brisbane Family: partner Dave, children Curran (19), Jade (16) and Danny (14) Star Sign: Cancer Favourite Food: Slovenian home cooked meals Angela Hitzke grew up in Brisbane with her 2 younger sisters, Emma and Amber with a Prussian surname and Slovenian upbringing, wanting to be an archeaologist.

At 19 she was told she had a full blood brother who’d been adopted out in the 1960s by an Austrian count (who owns a castle back there) and his Aussie wife.

That year the sisters met their older brother Simon and the 4 siblings are still close to this day and have made up for lost time.

She moved to Sydney in her twenties and worked at the Menzies Hotel in the food and beverage department later transferring to a sister hotel at Terrigal on the central Coast. Here she met Robert Barrett the author of the famous Les Norton books such as Wouldn’t be Dead for Quids and many others. She appears as a character in one of his books as Angela and the two remained good friends until his death in 2012.

‘I had the idea we should have a small magazine promoting Terrigal and what’s on so I arranged to see the President of the Chamber of Commerce to get some tips. ‘He was a potter who was

She worked here for several years and bought her first house not far from there at Tumbi Umbi.

She later moved to Lennox and has lived here for almost twenty years now with all three of her children being home water births and Jade and Danny being born here at Lennox Head itself.

Ten of those years have been devoted to being a Family Daycare Educator.

‘It began because Jade inspired me when she was little.’

‘When we moved into Dave’s home we converted the playroom for family day care. I’ve forged such strong relationships with so many parents and families in this community. I love it and recently celebrated my 10 year anniversary which was a proud moment.’

‘During that time I joined the Lennox Wave team and I’ve been writing for years, with many stories at home dating back to my childhood. My friends

are encouraging me to write a book and there’s many ideas being tossed around such as a children’s series and a detective novel based in Lennox, all with a comical streak. So you never know Lennox locals, you might be reading about yourselves sometime soon.

Definitely participating in the education and social development of young children and laying the foundations for healthy adulthood. I love spending my days with the little ones.

Simon Prior Is...

Physiotherapist (musculoskeletal / sports) Lennox Head Physiotherapy Centre Birthplace: Newcastle Family: wife Samantha, daughters Mai (7) and Abby (4) Star sign: Leo Favourite food: Thai Although Simon Prior started life in Newcastle, his family moved to Grafton when he was young and he grew up there. His father was a town planner, and regional manager of town planning for the North Coast of New South Wales.

During his childhood, Simon’s father undertook two job exchanges in the UK and these took the family abroad for a year each time. For Simon it meant new school and new friends, but he says he took it in his stride. In fact, perhaps it set him up for the nomadic life he was to lead in later life.

At 15 he received a full (academic and sports) scholarship to The Kings School in Sydney where he boarded and excelled in several sports.

He was state record holder in swimming, played soccer in the Australian titles and competed at the State level in athletics.

After school he took a gap year and went back to the UK and was offered a place in a premier league soccer youth academy.

On his return to Australia he enrolled in a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science and followed that up with a physiotherapy degree. (In 2013 also completed his Masters and published a research paper).

Simon’s wife also worked in the sports profession, and it was her role working for the International Canoe Federation

in Switzerland that took the couple overseas. There Simon made the professional connections that led to a job in the rehab department at the Aspetar Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Hospital in Qatar.

‘It was interesting living in Qatar where their social and gender attitudes differ to us. Both our girls were born there and we had to choose a hospital that would allow me to attend the births,’ he says.

After 5 years in Qatar Simon reached a point where he suddenly wanted to come home.

‘One night I just sat down and sent several emails to physiotherapy practices in the Northern Rivers asking if they would consider selling. Sally (Petrie) actually got back to me very quickly saying the timing was wrong for her, but she may be interested in a few months.

‘True to her word, she contacted me several months later and we began negotiations for the purchase of the business, which was finalised in October 2013.’

Since buying the Lennox Head Physiotherapy Centre Simon has immersed himself in the local

community. He provides voluntary professional services to the Trojans and the Lennox Head Football Club.

‘On home game days for both clubs I am there for pre-game warm ups and strapping, plus some on field assessment. During the season on Monday nights I offer my services to the Trojans – one hour injury assessment for players carrying injuries. Tuesday nights I coach the senior goal keepers for LHFC Sharks and last year I also coached the junior Sharks and sponsored them.

Simon also takes his demonstration skeleton across to the preschool once every year where he gives the kids a talk about bones. And he gives talks at all the local clubs.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Helping people. It’s awesome when someone comes in and they can’t even stand and then the next time I see them they are walking without their stick.

Worst thing? Not being able to help some people. Some injuries and complaints are chronic.

Hobbies? Fitness, music, I love Bluesfest.

Work Life philosophy? Look after your health and fitness and do something that you love.

Community Preschool

After all of our discussion about fire safety and our recent Lennox Head fires, the Lennox Head Rural Fire service invited us down to visit the station.

Monty and Phil showed us around.

Monty showed us the fire jackets and said they are bright yellow so the fire fighters are easily visible through the smoke. He then showed us the walkie talkies that allow the fire fighters to communicate with each other during a fire. We then went through to the Lunch room which is also where the lockers are to keep their safety clothes including their big heavy fire boots.

What should we do if we wake up and there is smoke? Get down low and go, go, go! Amy knew to call ‘000’ if there is a fire and Tia knew to Stop Drop and Roll if we got fire on us!

Back at preschool we have been exploring and enhancing our identity. We have made a sign for our bedroom doors with our name on it. This supports us to create connection between our names and ourselves and enhance our early literacy as we begin to explore name writing and shape formulation. We have been representing ourselves in a variety of ways and using the mirror to emerge our concept of self.

Lennox Head Public School Public Speaking Competition Ding! Ding! Ding! The bell rings to signal the end of the last speech of the day.

What speeches I hear you saying? Well the answer to that is the Paul Bryant Public Speaking competition, an annual school competition for Lennox Head Public School students to demonstrate how they can wow an audience in a timed speech. Stage 1 students presented their speech in a one minute time frame, Stage 2 had two minutes, and Stage 3 had three minutes. The students then had thirty seconds to wrap up their speech and make concluding remarks.

A finalist last year said “I think the Paul Bryant Public Speaking Competition is a great confidence booster and provides students with a sense of what speeches are like in the real world, for job interviews and the like.”

The event is named after previous Assistant Principal, Paul Bryant, who also happens to be a judge, to highlight the importance of public speaking with students. Winners will be announced in next month’s edition of the Lennox Wave.

Coen A Kids in the Kitchen Stirring, slicing and chopping has been the order of the day for stage three students this term. They have been involved in the school program, Kids in the Kitchen. Students have been learning how to prepare nutritious meals

and even use ingredients from the school garden. Parents and grandparents volunteer their time to work with small groups of children after completing a training day for the program. Stage two are about to commence and all stages will have an opportunity to participate throughout the year.

Southern Cross Public School Holy Family Catholic School & Ballina Coast High School In Kindergarten’s Term One PD/Health unit ‘Safe Living’, the children are learning about various types of safety one aspect of this unit focusses on Fire Safety. We were fortunate to have three firefighters from the Ballina station visit our Kindergarten classes on Thursday 23rd February. The firefighters reinforced our classroom learning by explaining to the children what their job involved, what clothes they wore and equipment they used when fighting a fire. The boys and girls practised ‘Stop, Drop, Cover and Roll’ and also ‘Get Down Low and Go,Go,Go’. The children were excited to see the fire engine and had fun using the fire hose. KW and KC have some promising future firefighters.

CWA Cooking Contest On the 2nd of March Bree Reeves and Chloe Pratt handed in their ‘Giant Chewy Anzac Biscuits’ for the 2nd round of the CWA under 13 Country Cookery cooking competition.

They both knocked out all of the local schools in the competition, with Bree coming 1st and Chloe coming 2nd. Bree is to go on to the state finals in cooking.

Good luck to Bree and well done to both the girls for making it this far.

By Chloe Pratt National Young Leaders Conference On Monday 13 March our Year 4, 5 and 6 SRC went to Brisbane for the National Young Leaders Conference. This year the theme was “ImagiNATION”.

Once again our students thoroughly enjoyed this experience, despite the early morning start. Each year our SRC come back inspired and full of ideas to implement into our school community.

2017 International Women’s Day The 2017 International Women’s Day was recognised in our local area by a special lunch organised by the Ballina Chamber of Commerce. The Representatives of the Ballina Coast High School SRC were there to help recognise the importance of promoting the position of women today.

Included in the day was an important acknowledgement of the achievements of the late Aunty Bertha Kapeen by key women in the community.

M.A.D.D. Our school musical drama production is well underway with students rehearsing madly!

It’s been a great start to 2017 for Leba with two rounds completed in solid waves.

Competitor numbers are well and truly up on last year’s participants, particularly in the fleas & groms divisions. The future is looking very bright with some real talent showing in these pint sized surfers.

The club’s junior development programs have been in full swing with thanks to head coach James Wood and coaches Rob Wright, Jenny Boggis and Michael Crisp. Thanks also to Blake Gahnimeh with some wild JetSki aerial training sessions for the Cadets & Juniors.

Results thus far for the first two club rounds have Zane Jonsson leading the way in the Fleas, Harry O’Brien in front in the Groms, Jai Glindeman sitting on top in the Cadets, Jae Waters winning the Juniors, Aeran Thomas on top of the table in the Opens, Paul Weston sitting in first place in the Seniors and Glen Curtis & Rob Wright taking out the Masters & Legends respectively. Unfortunately the normally high place finishes for Leba teams haven’t eventuated so far this year with “middle of the pack” placings in both the Australian Boardriders Battles and the Kirra Teams event. All eyes are now on the Kirra Junior Teams event to see if we can get back on the dais.

Lots of Leba crew headed up to Snapper Rocks to cheer on ‘home grown surfer’ Stu Kennedy and ‘adopted son’ Owen Wright in the Quicksilver Pro last month. Held in awesome waves Stu Kennedy showed real promise for the year ahead narrowly bowing out in round three. Owen Wright completed a fairytale return from serious brian injury to take out the first WSL for 2017 event in emphatic style. The substantial Leba crew who made the trip up the coast witnessed one of those memorable moments in sport as Owen accepted the first place trophy after a amazing comeback from a near career ending injury.

Expectations are now high for both Stu and Owen to do well heading into the next stop on the WSL calendar the Bells Beach Classic in Easter.

Lennox Longboarders After cancellations throughout February, finally we had a Sunday meet for the club in March with decent waves, tide in our favour, a high mid morning at Lennox Main beach with a abating swell from the huge swell of the previous week.

Conditions came together for a good round of longboarding in decent waves.

27 members took part in pristine autumn conditions with off shore winds.

Standout for this round was young Tim Leete, winning the Firsts with longboarding manoeuvres in a talented Firsts final.

Nash Bash

You might have noticed a few wizened old blokes hobbling around the village lately? Glacially slow at the best of times, their staggering gait is not the result of a new fangled fitness craze for forty pluses or over indulgence in fine wine or cold beer. Well not totally. It’s merely the end product of the traditional heralding of the Golden Oldies (GO) rugby season on the Far North Coast. Yes, the world renowned, much revered, occasionally imitated ‘Nash Bash’ - held on the beating heart of Lennox Head - the magnificent Williams Reserve.

Named in honour of a dear departed founder of the Lennox Head Stags Glen Nash, the event is a fitting tribute to man who loved community and, along with a few like-minded souls, did something about it! Better still that his son Jack was along for the ride.

For the Nash Bash is nothing if not about community. For GO’s this entails getting together around our abiding love of rugby, spending time running, passing, jinking (well some of us) and then endlessly going on and on and on about it.

Not forgetting of course our fond reminiscences, through rose tinted glasses of how things were different ‘in our day’!

Although a few of the more tropical beasts were conspicuous in their absence there were some interesting animal combinations strutting their stuff - Bullrouts, Battered Prawns, Old War Horses, the odd Mongrel, some Crocs as well as a veritable herd of Stags, resplendent in mediocre red, white and green.

Under the loving gaze of our gloriously authoritarian leader Cassius, the Stags toiled tirelessly to put on a show for the ages. If Juan Antonio himself had turned up there’s little doubt he would have declared it the ‘best ever’ as our visitors and their entourages, not to mention assorted partners and friends were welcomed, enriched and entertained. Some of them even watched the rugby!

Debutantes were schooled in the curious rituals of GO rugby… red shorts, half time port and every game a draw. Older members from afar returned as if they’d never left and those no longer with us were mistily remembered.

Four hours of fun passed effortlessly, smiles grew ever wider, Williams was cleared and left pristine for future sporting endeavour and rag tag bunches of happy, laughing people drifted off to the pub to tell yet more stories of derring do.

It doesn’t get much better!

Fancy a run with the Stags? Easy! Simply come along to Williams around 6pm on any given Wednesday and you will find us. Or head to the Lennox Head hotel on a Friday evening where grown men in bright red, furry aprons can be found selling raffle tickets for good causes. You know you want to…
