From The Publisher
This month I'm jumping out of my skin because The Lennox Wave has welcomed a new member to the team and already the results are amazing. I've employed Michelle Shearer to be the digital marketing and social media manager — something I needed to do to ensure The Lennox Wave stays abreast of the incredible changes taking place in the media world. Michelle is the perfect person for the job: she's a communityminded spirit, active community member, and an absolute dynamo when it comes to digital marketing, which is her specialty. Keeping The Lennox Wave useful, relevant, independent, and all those other things, is what we are about. Our priority is to see The Lennox Wave prosper into the future and continue to serve this community. As the town keeps changing and growing, I believe it will become even more important to promote and acknowledge the uniquely Lennox character that we all know and love so well.

Landmarks Of Lennox— 64 Allens Parade, Last of The '59 Estate
In 1959, 118 lots on the Dress Circle Drive-Allens Parade estate were offered for sale by developers Ta-Land Enterprises Pty Ltd (a local consortium comprising John Allen Taylor, Allen Taylor and Alan Jones). Until 2018, only one lot remained undeveloped – number 64 Allens Parade. This second last vacant waterfront lot in Lennox Head has an interesting history. It was one of the seaside lots above the now Boardwalk deemed unsuitable for building due to the risk of erosion. This did not stop purchases of these sites. Although, by today’s standards the prices were far from exorbitant – around $10,0001.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s huge sections of 64 Allens Parade and adjoining land were claimed by the sea. Not until the early ‘90s were major works co-funded by owners and Ballina Shire Council to fill and construct a revetment wall, returning to owners the missing parts of their properties. With its long history of being a vacant green space and agreement of the then owner, 64 Allens Parade was maintained by a neighbour. It became a thoroughfare to the beach for generations of visitors and locals, site of an annual bonfire, a sheltered picnic spot, a place to watch the moon rise, practise golf, kick soccer balls and throw Frisbees.

Turning Concepts into Reality the lennox wave | OCTOBER 2018
Skennars Head Development As the developer of the Skennars Head Aureus development submitted amendments to the original planning proposal, we contacted Council to get some clarification on what's next for this development. Matthew Wood, Group Manager Development and Environmental Health provided us with this summary. Land south of Headlands Drive (now known as the Skennars Head Expansion Area) was identified as a potential urban area in local urban and growth planning documents in the 1980s. The expansion area was zoned to enable residential development in 2014 by the NSW State Government. Importantly, the Ballina Shire Growth Management Strategy requires a separation (or urban break) between Skennars Head and East Ballina. This is shown in the figure below extracted from Council’s Local Growth Management Strategy (2012), with the green line indicatively depicting a planned break between Skennars Head and East Ballina from The Coast Road westward.
In relation to the zoning of the land, a planning proposal proposing the following changes has been on public exhibition: · Increase in the area of land zoned B1 Neighbourhood Centre from 879m2 to 13,200 m2. The exhibited planning proposal includes planning controls addressing the use of this area (such as the extent of commercial floor space). · Application of an R3 Medium Density Residential zone to several areas of already urban zoned land. The land developer originally also sought to have the building height limit increased from 8.5 to 10m in relation to the neighbourhood centre area. However, Council did not support this request. This means that the existing building height standard of 8.5m remains applicable to the land and the requested change to the height does not form part of the exhibited planning proposal. The plans below show the changes proposed. Note the 7(d) zone to the east is an environmental protection zone.
The public exhibition of the planning proposal concluded in late September. Submissions will be reviewed and reported to the Council for a decision on whether to proceed to make the proposed changes to the Local Environmental Plan. It is expected this matter will be reported to the Council before the end of this year. In relation to development proposals, there are three current applications as follows: DA 2017/244 – Subdivision of part of the residential zoned land to create 229 residential lots. This DA is currently under assessment and will be determined by the Northern Region Joint Regional Planning Panel. DA 2018/431 – Two lot subdivision to provide for a temporary road. This is currently under assessment by Council. DA2018/477 – Erection of a temporary sales office and associated vehicular access and car parking. This is currently under assessment by Council.

RFS Update MONTY GIBBS, PRESIDENT
Fire season and permits are in full swing and we have had permit officers quite busy giving out permits in the local area. Please remember there are heavy fines if you burn without a permit. We are also expecting upcoming days of hot weather where permits will be suspended and then maybe total fire bans. Our crew have been responding to a few fires around the back of the Lake in the bush and on the beach. These fires are really not wise, particularly at this time of year, especially when abandoned, as they can get out of control and pose a huge threat to our community very quickly.
previously mentioned the Fires Near Me App which will give you information about fires in our area. The other app is called My Fire Plan and it gives you a list of steps to go through to make sure your property is ready for a potential fire. The app Emergency+ is also recommended as it calls emergency services and gives your current location to tell the operator. This is helpful when reporting an emergency as often vague or incorrect location details can cause delays in responding. For helpful information please check out the New South Wales RFS website and follow our Facebook page Lennox Head Rural Fire Brigade.

At the time of writing, Council were meeting to approve or otherwise a 'test drive' (or trial) of a low-cost one-way traffic flow option. Velocettes On Show The Velocette Owners Club of Australia Inc is holding its annual ‘Good Companions Rally’ at Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre from Sunday 7 – Sunday 14 October. Velocette Motorcycles were first produced in England in 1904 and ceased production in 1971. This once world–famous make was headed by brothers Percy and Eugene Goodman. The company first built a 4996cc side valve, single motorcycle and went on to produce the famous overhead cam (ohc) Velocette which won the Isle of Man TT, broke records at Brooklands and gained a reputation for reliability and speed. On Saturday 13th we are holding a public display of the motorcycles on the grassed foreshore near the bus stop/public toilets in Lennox Head. This will be raising money, through a gold coin donation, for the Lennox Head Rural Fire Service.

Lennox Lightning Toastmasters Breast Cancer Support JOHN PEACOCK
You may have heard the dulcet tones of Zsolt Mankowski as he delivers the weather, tide, boating and fishing report on Paradise FM for Marine Rescue. Zsolt is a keen Toastmaster and has been a member of Lennox Lightning for several years. Zsolt arrived in Australia as a Hungarian refugee following the Russian invasion of Hungary. As a schoolboy in Melbourne in the 50s he arrived with no English at all and had to pick it up as his education wasn’t waiting for him.
Zsolt studied engineering at University before embarking on a successful career in the same field. Throughout his working life he had to manage teams and conduct meetings. Zsolt recognised the benefits of communication and leadership. In his spare time he became an accomplished sky diver, so was no stranger to throwing himself into new challenges.
Lennox Lightning Toastmasters in order to become better still at communicating, practising speaking off the cuff, impromptu and to expand his social circle. Toastmasters offers the opportunity to practise public speaking. Whether its prepared speeches to practise presentation skills or short impromptu speaking tasks, your public speaking will only get better. Lennox Lightning meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at Club Lennox. 7pm sharp. It is free to come as a visitor and there is no compulsion to speak or participate until you’re ready to do so.
The next meeting of the Ballina Bosom Buddies Support Group will be held on 18 October from 10am until 12pm at the Kentwell Community Centre, cnr of Moon St and Bangalow Rd, Ballina. We are a community based group open to anyone who has experienced breast cancer and meet for fun, friendship and support. We regularly invite guest speakers to talk on topics such as healthy living, management of treatment side effects, relaxation, meditation and a range of other topics of interest. This month, Melissa from Amoena is our guest and she will be talking about what’s new in breast forms (prostheses), lingerie and swimwear. She’ll be bringing lots of samples and is happy to answer any questions you have too. The group is co-facilitated by a specialist breast care nurse. Please contact Debbie on 0401 301 413 or Karen on 0439 438 576 for further information.
Always with his community at mind, Zsolt became a serving member of Marine Rescue as well as several other community spirited activities. He joined

Made In Lennox Meet Felisa Beesley and her sister Emma Earley from swell & solis childrens fashion design and manufacture.
‘swell’ noun: a series of waves ‘solis’ Latin, noun: sun 1. Why did you start your business? After the birth of my daughter, Cleo, I was looking for a way to combine my business background with my love of sewing. swell & solis began as a madeto-order Etsy store, which gave me a creative outlet and allowed me to stay at home with Cleo, but quickly grew beyond my expectations.

Our garments are handmade in Lennox Head and Bali by a small team of artisan dressmakers with ethical and sustainable business practises. We have personally met with our team and inspected their facilities to ensure they are in a safe and pleasant working environment. We pay above minimum wage to ensure our craftsmen and women are remunerated fairly.
My sister, Emma, who studied law but was always drawn more to business and marketing, joined swell & solis and we expanded to 14 stockists in five countries. 2. What is the philosophy that drives it? swell & solis is inspired by life beside the ocean and under the sun. With

3. What’s been your biggest lesson along the way? It’s easy to become overworked and overwhelmed trying to do everything yourself, so our biggest (and hardest) lesson has been to prioritise our individual skills and the things we love, and outsource everything else to experts in their field. It’s also important to step back and remember why we started the business, what it means to us and what we want it to become. 4. What do you love most about your business? It is the best feeling seeing pieces that have been designed and made by us on customers around the world, especially when they are chosen for special occasions like pregnancy announcements, birthdays and weddings. We also focus on the quality and longevity of our garments, so seeing clothes that are well-loved by one child and then passed on to their siblings or friends is so satisfying.

Recycling Dental Products Angus Lambie, Emma Coulter and the team from Lennox Point Dental are pleased to be involved in the TerraCycle Program, recycling dental products and raising money for charity. They kicked off their efforts last month with a visit by the local Preschool, but are hoping that everyone in Lennox will get involved. Lennox Point Dental collect the following for recycling: • used toothbrushes • toothpaste tubes and caps • toothbrush and toothpaste outer packaging and • floss containers. They ship them to TerraCycle to earn TerraCycle Points. Each point is redeemable for money which is donated to a charity of choice. Lennox Point Dental has chosen Sea Bird Rescue. Everyone is welcome to bring any of the above into Lennox Point Dental or drop them off to the Preschool.

Lennox Lions Club Right from the official opening of the Town and Gown Art Exhibition by Melissa Wright we felt this was going to be a special event. And it was! Unprecedented numbers of art works, excellent sales and a sense of enjoyment from all who visited over the weekend made this experience special. Family day on the Sunday which included entertaining band and choir items as well as the Peace Poster presentations and a free sausage sizzle for the kids capped off the whole event. Thanks must go to Rena Hurley, the friends of Lennox Lions and the Lions themselves for their efforts. We should also thank our major sponsors Ballina Art and Framing, Macadamia Castle, Local Search and First National Byron for their support. Huge thanks to all exhibitors. Without you, there would be no show. Well done Lion Helen and her Xavier Leos for their input in teaching the Year

It was a great exercise in cooperation, teamwork and consideration for others. After months of work, the Peace Poster competition held across 4 schools culminated in the presentation of the prizes (generously provided by First National Byron Bay) on the Sunday of the Art Show. The winners, whose artwork will now go on to the next level of the competition were: Juniper Harper (LHPS), Georgia Harder (Alstonville PS), Jack Potter (Empirevale PS) and Jacob Smallbone (Teven- Tintenbar PS). As usual, there are far more people involved in making these activities such a success than we have space to acknowledge here. We want you all to know how grateful we are for your support. We are always looking for women from all backgrounds and ages to join us. Growing our membership is really important to our VIEW Clubs so we can continue our volunteer work with The Smith Family and support Australian children and families.
Women Helping Women Members of the Lennox Head Women’s Group recently lent a hand with the Moree Drought Muster. They decided they wanted to do something different, so they put together pamper packs for farming women. 'Women often prioritise the farm over their personal needs and they even deny themselves barrier cream for their work roughened hands,' said Lavender, the convenor of the Lennox Head Women’s Group. Donations of personal care products and cash were made by local women. Also the Byron Bay company Sanctum donated some of their organic products so that each pamper pack contained a number of these as well as various other goodies.
We would love you to join us for dinner on Tuesday 9 October to help us celebrate our 6th birthday. With the assistance of Louise Clarke from Two Cups in Ballina, we are hosting a trivia night! Bring a friend and join in the fun. Our meetings are held in the Beef+Beach restaurant upstairs in the Lennox Hotel at 6.30pm. Cost is $30. All proceeds from moneys raised on the night will assist us in supporting our two Learning for Life students.
Nearly 30 women’s pamper packs were made up. Most packs were delivered to the Moree Drought Muster co-ordinators and the others to a local Moree women’s service.

According to the national mental health survey, about one in five of us will experience a mental illness in any 12-month period of time and nearly half of us would meet the criteria to be diagnosed with a mental illness in the course of our lifetime. The outcomes for most people with a mental illness are very good when treatment and support is accessed, but for some people affected by mental illness it can be tragic. On average, about 8 people die by suicide every day in Australia. Our local event on 10 October will not just be about mental illness. It will also be about mental health. There will be a DJ to entertain, representatives from Lifeline, headspace, StandBy Support After Suicide, New Access, NSW Health and the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP). RAMHP will be launching their new Glove Box Guide for mental health and everyone will receive a copy as well as many other resources. Trent Chapman from Movement Functional Fitness will facilitate a Mood Booster 15 minute exercise and along with Steve Carrigg from RAMHP, will deliver a shortened

Are You Brave Enough? A couple of months ago we lost a friend to a vicious and unsmiling assassin – depression. Jason Mumford was known throughout the region as a bright and bubbly personality, he was a father, a partner, a brother and a son. He hid his illness well. Alas, he was far from alone - many of us have lost loved ones, relatives, colleagues, acquaintances, friends of friends, young and old in similar fashion. Mental health issues are indiscriminate, debilitating and sometimes fatal. The Lennox Head Golden Oldies decided to draw a line in the sand. The Stags (as we are fondly known) are an eclectic bunch of ‘never have beens’ who play touch in a very mediocre fashion, who can raise money for good causes when we put our minds to it. We are a mobile men’s shed proudly dressed in red, white and green and we want everybody to live long, productive and happy lives.
So, after a long discussion we decided to put on a function to raise awareness and money for mental health causes. The result is the Are You Brave Enough? event at the Beef + Beach on 2 November.
LeBa Donates
Stellar speakers from the sporting world are jostling to talk, there’s a local comedian, raffles aplenty and an auction, plus great food and beverages from the Beef + Beach. The money raised will fund: • certified mental health first aid courses for approximately 100 local people over the next 6 months; • a new, not for profit business that will spread the message and provide employment for local people who just want a chance; and • other ideas that you can contribute to. Tickets available at https:// lennoxstagsnov18.eventbrite.com.au or give Dave Arthur a call on 0422267813.

Every year the organisers of the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open raise money for local community organisations. This year local film maker and LeBa member, Simon Baker ran a special screening of Breath at the Ballina Cinema on Sunday 15 July and did a Q & A along with Samson Coulter – who played Pikelet in the movie. Local brewing company Seven also donated a keg of beer – which was served in the foyer before the movie. This year the money raised was donated to the Ngulingah Aquatics program. The program is run by Southern Cross School of Distance Education. The students are Aboriginal and from the local area. As part of the school's curriculum the students participate in water activities learning about local waterways and Aboriginal culture, water safety, ocean awareness and participate in a variety of activities in the ocean and local rivers. The $2000 donation will be used to purchase surfboards and water safety equipment like life jackets and will go a long way in helping students learn about and respect the oceans and waterways.

Headliners On Tour
The Headliners hit the road again in late August and 32 of us eagerly boarded a coach for the four hour trip to Toowoomba for an exciting adventure. Our brothers in barbershop harmony, High Altitude Harmony (HAH), invited us to be featured artists in two shows they had organized at the Philharmonic Society Performance Centre in Toowoomba. During our morning coffee stop, we were
asked to sing for the proprietors. On discovering that two of the customers having coffee were hearing impaired, director Cathy Gordon asked our member Julia Murphy if she would sign our chosen song Shelter. Julia works with hearing impaired children but had never signed a song for us so this was a first for all of us. Julia did not miss a beat and was able to sing her tenor part and sign with ease. The look of joy and wonder on the faces of those ladies was an unforgettable and emotional moment and we were very proud of Julia. Headliners now look forward to our show A Night to Remember on 20 October, at Ballina RSL Level One Auditorium at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the RSL. All tickets $25.
LAC Featured Artist - Zali Gee Born locally in Lennox, Zali has grown up immersed in nature. Mother Earth has been her greatest teacher. Zali has completed a Visual Arts Degree with her preferred subject matter being the female figure. She is inspired by people and all spectrums of their fluidity, and all that she draws or stitches or creates is because of them. Zali's exhibition, WIld Woman runs from Friday 28 September - Thursday 11 October. LAC is open 7 days 10am- 3pm
We are very excited to bring the men of HAH to our show and invite you to come and join us for this very special evening. As well as the beautiful harmonies from The Headliners and High Altitude Harmony, you will experience bagpipes, a soloist and small ensembles. It promises to be truly a night to remember.

Film Screening—Dominion Dominion is a feature-length documentary presenting an uncompromising, damning exploration of the various ways animals are used and abused by humans, particularly in the meat, dairy, egg, clothing and entertainment industries. Filmed in Australia, Dominion combines footage from handheld, hidden, and aerial drone cameras, much of it never seen before, to convey both the terrifying scale of an empire built on secrecy – and the individual stories of its victims. There will be a screening on 25 of October at the Park Lane Theatre, Lennox Head Community Centre. $10 a ticket. There will also be music, raffles/prizes, and a Q and A at the end of the film. Money raised will go back to the filmakers and Aussie Farms, an animal rights charity, dedicated to ending commercialised animal abuse and exploitation in Australian animal agriculture. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite.com.au - search for Dominion.
Walk 4 Brain Cancer David Greiner, facilitator of Walk4BrainCancer Lennox Head to Ballina, lost his adored wife Christine to Brain Cancer in 2015. Each year he and the Lennox Head Lions Club run this event to raise funds and awareness of brain cancer research. Join him and others for a community walk/run from Lennox Head Community Center to Shelly Beach Ballina to raise funds for brain cancer research. The course is approximately 20km return, and the walk/run is a very popular coastal track for locals and visitors alike. You will start at the Lennox Head Community Centre and proceed to the designated path up to Pat Morton lookout along the coastal headlands past Boulders Beach then onto Sharpes and Angels Beach, continuing along to Shelly Beach where you then turn around and take the same route in return to Lennox Head where the Lions will be running a BBQ. Water stations will be provided along the route and walkers should bring their own refillable containers. There will be a 20 seat bus for the morning so if you would like to get a lift back to Lennox Head instead of walking back, you can do so. The bus has been donated with free hire from the Ballina Bears Cricket Club. This is their team bus to take to away games and for any reprensentative duties within the cricket community of Ballina. The Lions Club have already appointed one of their crew to drive the bus which is very kind. Date: Sunday 4 November 2018 Registration: 6:00am Start: 06:30am (daylight saving time)

Julie Earl, Conveyancer Years of experience working in a range of administrative and financial roles, including as a bookkeeper and paralegal for solicitors and barristers, gave Julie Earl a strong understanding of the role of the law and contracts in the sale and purchase of property. In fact her vast knowledge led Julie to take up the profession herself. She completed a two year Conveyancing Law and Practice course at Macquarie University and is licenced to practise. She says a lot of people don’t realise that you don’t need to see a solicitor to sell, purchase or settle on the purchase of a property. ‘A conveyancer is subject to exactly the same rules and professional code of conduct as a solicitor, and can do everything necessary to assist in the sale or purchase, from preparing the listing contract right through to sale and set-
tlement,’ she says. ‘And we can act for clients who are purchasing or selling.’ ‘It’s the biggest purchase that a lot of people will make in their lives, and it’s very important to get it right. Being a conveyancer means being sensitive to the emotional side of buying and selling property.’ ‘I often find myself in the mediating role between agent and vendor or buyer. My role is to make things run smoothly and to ensure that those involved understand the process,’ she says. Originally from Melbourne, Julie and her husband moved here 22 years ago and brought up three children. Her role as mother is not quite finished, so the flexibility of a home-based business in Lennox Head will mean that she can also offer that convenience to her clients.

New Club Lennox Manager He’s worked in plenty of roles over his career, but Glen Lloyd sure knows clubs. In fact his first Club General Manager role was when he was just in his mid twenties. ‘I think I was the youngest Club Manager in Australia for a while there,’ he says. He admits now that he was in the right place at the right time, and that it was definitely a case of learning on the run. And that’s what he’s doing at the moment, having arrived in Lennox Head at Club Lennox as the new General Manager. He’s in the midst of learning the ropes, getting his head around the history and the needs of the community. It’s a phase we must all go through when we start a new role. While Glen admits to feeling a little bit overwhelmed at the moment, he says he’s excited about what the role will entail, and already his head is full of ideas for the future. ‘I know I will get through this phase of learning and then I can begin to manage the Club,’ he says. He’s a community minded guy, and has moved into the village where he is enjoying the luxury of walking to work and to the beach. ‘I like being a part of the community and being connected. That’s what clubs are all about,’ he says. As to the unique needs of Club Lennox, Glen says the history of the Club has been an interesting one. ‘You had incredible community support to get the Club up and running again, and that’s an amazing achievement. At that

time membership peaked and interest in the Club was high, but now we’re in a phase where people are starting to take it a little bit for granted again. My message to Lennox Head is the Club needs your support all of the time.’ ‘We have a duty, as Board and staff, to constantly improve the facility, maintain the assets, and make it accessible to the community. The financial costs of that are considerable.’ ‘I have an open door policy and want to welcome anyone to come and see me any time. The more information I have, the better off the Club will be,’ he says. Drop in and meet Glen at the Club.

short story
A Very Close Shave SHORT STORY BY TODD MAGUIRE
My heart was pounding through my chest as the cut-throat blade was pressed to my throat. I held my breath and clenched my teeth. How I ever managed to get myself into this spot of bother was beyond me. I closed my eyes as I felt the cold steel strike its first blow. The streets of the Mexican village were deep into siesta time. The only sign of life was a few die hards sucking down bottles of beer under a thatched awning outside the barber shop. ‘Where you go, Gringo?’ They smoked and laughed, fetching beers from the grog shop next door. ‘I need to see the barber... You know…. shave and a haircut?’ ‘You sit amigo. He open soon.’ I was beckoned to join them in the shade. One fellow who emerged from under his tattered sombrero seemed the ringleader. He was so old and withered. If he sneezed he would have broken a rib. He knocked the top off a bottle of Corona, smiled and wiped the neck with a dirty cloth. The beer was cold. The hospitality warm. ‘Grassy arse, Senyour.’ I joyfully replied as I swigged on the frosty bottle. They laughed at my pathetic attempt at Spanish. The town square clock struck three and the village automatically woke from its slumber. A young senorita approached
and dutifully opened the door of the barber shop. Her beauty seemed so out of place on the dusty street. ‘There you go amigo.’ One of my new friends snickered with a wink. ‘I tell you we look after you.’ With a few beers under my belt, I entered the barber shop. The beautiful girl spoke perfect English, welcoming me and encouraged me to sit down. I did not need to be told twice as the petite lass ushered me into the worn leather chair. Lathering up my salty wind tortured face for a shave; her touch was gentle and the cream soothing. Her perfume sent me into a trance. ‘I will be back,’ she promised as she gently placed her hand on my shoulder. I heard the rear door creak as it opened and closed. Unexpectedly the weary old man from the street magically appeared beside me. Clasped in his quivering paw was a shiny cut-throat blade reflecting the afternoon sun. I have never been so terrified in my life. He smiled through his four remaining teeth. Sporting a pair of glasses as thick as the bottom of a coke bottle, up close he looked older than the Aztec ruins. The pungent reek of alcohol on his breath failed to set me at ease. The beads of sweat on my forehead swelled. My mind raced, fuelled by alcohol and adrenaline. Am I going to die? What is my life really worth? I dare not move. Between each shaking stroke all I could comprehend was heckling from outside. My head was spinning. I think at this moment I thought I might wet my pants.
The young senorita’s comforting hand returned to my trembling shoulder. ‘You look so handsome.’ She whispered into my ear. Was my ordeal really over? She wiped my face clean, sponged my brow and helped me from the chair. ‘Gracias.’ I mumbled placing a handful of pesos on the counter, my knees still unsteady. On returning to my new friends on the street, I was greeted by a wave of laughter and backslaps. As I sat, the old man was back in his spot drinking his beer, smiling. He offered me another. It was cold. A healthy swig and my nerves gradually began to abate. I was in Mexico, and somehow, I was still alive. About Todd Todd Maguire is my name. My family and I have been Lennox Head residents for eight years now and love the close friends we have found here. We are originally from a small Sydney beach called Bronte. I have been writing short stories for 10 years. My pieces are clever and light, mostly true and are quite funny. The yarns are reflections of my experiences here and abroad. I have been a regular contributor to numerous magazines: The Beast Magazine, a lifestyle publication in Sydney’s East and Time to Roam, an Australian travel magazine. I write stories to give my readers a laugh. I hope you enjoy my stories as I have plenty more up my sleeve.

Lennox Head Landcare How often do you hear the term ‘iconic’ bandied around? Yes it’s over-used, but the pandanus is definitely a tree that deserves this descriptor, particularly in our part of the world. The trees are not closely related to palms or pines, but somewhere along the line they picked up the common names ‘screw palm’ and ‘screw pine’. They’re also known as ‘breadfruit trees’, due to a type of damper made from the fruit. But again, they aren’t related to true breadfruit trees found across the Pacific.
The iconic pandanus is a beautiful gnarly tree, if a little unruly, and it’s perfectly suited to our coastal environment. On a hot day at the beach there’s no better place to spread your towel than in the shade of their sprawling branches. Just take care: those heavy fruit clusters do fall and they can make a mess of your melon if they land on you. Dept of Environment and Conservation NSW (2003): Place of Plenty – Culturally Useful Plants around Byron Bay.
1.
Aboriginal people had many uses for pandanus other than damper. The fruits contain oily, protein-rich seeds that were baked in hot sand or ash and have a sweet, nutty taste. Eating the fruit or seeds raw though isn’t recommended as ‘most people cannot eat the raw flesh without it stinging their throats’1. The young inner leaves are also edible while older leaves were made into baskets, bags, and mats and hollow branches were made into yidaki (didgeridoo) in the Northern Territory. Bats, parrots, turtles, crabs and fish also eat the pandanus fruits. Around Lennox, pandanus trees primarily grow on exposed coastal headlands and sometimes along sandy beaches, their prop roots anchoring them firmly between rocks and in loose sand. When the fruits fall from tree-lined cliffs, ocean currents carry them to new locations and the buoyant segments can remain viable for months. Sadly, some of our pandanus are suffering from dieback caused by small sap-sucking insects called planthoppers. If you’ve walked along the coastal path recently, you may have noticed this. Planthoppers produce honeydew which encourages mould growth that triggers leaf drop and eventually the whole tree dies. Planthoppers are native to north Queensland where natural predators control them but unfortunately their predators are absent here. Pandanus are easy to propagate for home gardens and can grow up to six metres high, but be careful of their spiky leaves. The trees are either male or female. The male flowers are fragrant spikes while the female flowers form those pineappleshaped yellow/orange fruit clusters we associate with the plant.

Podcasting Pipe Dream Something you might not know about me (well, let’s be honest, there’s plenty you don’t know about me yet, I’m only three columns in), is that I’m a podcaster. My one true love is the sound of my own voice. Note: I’m half kidding, I’m a great listener, but my gift is my voice. As a kid of the '80s, I was the one with the double tape deck, recording a song from the radio and then back announcing. Or recording conversations with my friends. Or pretending I was a journalist. Or recording some dramatic story. I think you get the gist, right? I liked to talk and record myself. During my teens and early 20s, friends and I would talk of how rad it would be to have a radio show. We’d joke about how we’d make awesome hosts. All just a bit of a pipe dream, really. After working a soul sucking job in sales, I decided to follow that pipe dream and enrol in radio school. When I moved to the area, in 2003, I landed my dream job at the local radio station. Only, turns out it wasn’t the dream and I left to start my career as a voice-over artist.
MANGO and COCONUT SALAD Great served with a curry and coconut rice Serves 4 Ingredients 1 red onion, diced (about 1 cup) 2 whole mangos, diced 1 lemon, juiced 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
Fast forward to 2014 and, the podcast, Serial was released. It seemed everyone around me was talking about it. I’d heard of podcasting, but I’d never listened to one. My little bro showed me how to use the podcast app on my iPhone and it was like this whole new world opened up to me. THIS was where I wanted to be. Not playing shitty pop music and back announcing. Making something that really mattered to me. I feel truly, madly, deeply in love with this medium, podcasting. And I felt the call to figure out what it would take to make one myself. I had the studio (thanks to my flourishing business as a voice over agency) and I definitely had some stuff to say. I figured it out, found myself at No.1 in iTunes and the rest is herstory. It’s fair to say that podcasting has changed my life. It’s opened up so many doors.
In a dry pan over medium heat, add the coconut flakes, cook until toasted, about 5 minutes, stirring every few minutes to prevent them from burning.
So what is a podcast? It’s like radio (but without the music) for the people, made BY the people. And if you haven’t checked out your podcast app (which is pre-installed on your iPhone or Android), go take it for a spin. Type in topics that you’re interested in and see what you can find. Anything from footy to fetish, true crime to blissful birth, lives in that baby.
Meanwhile, in a medium sized bowl, add the remaining ingredients. Give it a mix. Just before serving, add the toasted coconut (leaving it in longer will make it soggy). Serve!
And if you’re sitting there, nodding your head along like ‘that’s me! I want to podcast!’, my podcasting school, Radcasters has just reopened for business. Check it out at radcasters.com

Talking To Trent TRENT CHAPMAN
In the past 12 months there hasn’t been a week gone by that someone hasn’t come to me asking for advice on how to help someone they believe is suffering from poor mental health. Some weeks I am approached by five or more people all asking the same question: ‘What do I do to help?’, ‘Where can I find help?’ Or ‘I’ve tried everything and nothing works!’ Therefore this month I am going to use my article to tell you not just about an event which has been put together on Wednesday, 10 October, 4:30pm-7:30pm at the Lennox Head Community Centre but to tell you about the core learning which everyone in this community can take away on the day. You see for physical health we have DRSABCD (danger, response, airways, breaths, compression, defibrillator). It can be a requirement to know DRSABCD for certain jobs. I know it is for me as a trainer but there is one just as important, if not more important and thats ALGEE (assist, assess, approach, listen, give information, encourage professional help. Encourage other help). ALGEE is the mental health first aid action plan that teaches you how to assist someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis, developing a mental health problem or has an existing mental health problem and this is what will be taught on world mental health day. In only 30 minutes you can learn the correct steps to take and will not have to ask ‘What do I do to help?’ or ‘Where can I find help?’. You will also have ample resources to take home which can add to your tool box which may very well someday come in handy. For me it’s all about having a tool box equipped ready for whatever scenario you may find yourself in. Being prepared, equipped and educated decreases the chances of things slipping through the gaps and not only saves lives but can also brighten them too. Its important to know we don’t have to have a mental illness to find value in looking after our own mental health. We’ve learnt how to exercise and eat to look after out physical being. it’s about time we place just as much importance on looking after our mental wellbeing and coming along to such an event and supporting your community is a great way to achieve self care and be socially engaged - both fantastic for your mental health.

Summer Time Blues The end of winter sport invariably brings its challenges. Namely what to occupy your time with on a Saturday afternoon. Fortunately or unfortunately depending upon who you ask, I don’t have to worry about my time being put to good use. There is a list it seems, which just grows longer as the winter ticks along. I’m largely oblivious as I trot off to watch The Trojans and drink beer, but all the time this to-do list is growing with things for me to do. Whenever I watch those home-improvement, lifestyle shows on television, I like the travel and the cooking segments. Sitting through the gardening and DIY stuff just makes me think about good jobs for someone else. I mean, why would you deprive someone an income? Someone who has done a four-year apprenticeship doesn’t deserve me fiddling about in their domain. Whatever happened to people’s dreams? Probably the worst thing about these little projects on my list are the shopping trips that are required to make 'our' dreams into reality. I’m sure I’m not on my own when I suggest that the best thing about a trip to a home handyman warehouse is the fact that there’s a sausage sizzle out the front. It's not unknown for me not to actually go into the shop. This is probably not the worst. There’s a large Swedish furniture shop on the south side of Brisbane and I seem to find myself there more often than I should and always on a Sunday afternoon. We only seem to buy tealights and cushions, which I’m certain we could buy locally. It makes me question how many cushions and candles we actually need. If there’s ever a blackout in a Bedouin tent, we’d be the people to see. Worst of all though is the towel, bed linen and random bits of cloth debacle which doubles as a shop. I am fairly certain that I have never had to buy sheets, there have always just been sheets, but now I have several sets of varying colours and density. The struggle is real. I had no idea that thread count was a measurement or that they made cotton in Egypt. Sometimes the sheets are too nice to sleep on. That clean sheet feeling soon dissipates when you lie on a week’s wages. I met a cotton farmer from Moree once and I couldn’t help thinking about Moree cotton sheets and why that wasn’t a thing?

MIKE PETRIE
The advent of Spring is the most important time of the year for us and our health. It’s warming up and time for us to plan and commit to getting more active so we can fully enjoy great health and vitality on our beautiful North Coast through the summer months. Forget New Years resolutions, let’s make them now. My healthy tips for the season are: Activities. Plan to do what you like best exercise wise at least four times a week. If you feel like you might not fully commit to this then organise to join a group or meet a friend then you will turn up. Choose at least some of that exercise that is cardiovascular. It’s important to get your heart rate up and circulation increasing to flush your system of toxins and to improve fitness. Exercise will increase your energy levels and boost your vitality. Diet. The winter dinners can now gradually be replaced with lots of fresh fruit and greens. At dinner three quarters of your plate should be fresh veges and only one quarter protein. Remember, do everything in moderation, don’t torture yourself if you break for a day or two, we all do! Be sure to drink at least four litres of water a day. Environment. Get at least 20 minutes of sunshine each day, either mornings before 10 or late afternoons. Vitamin D deficiency is seen to be causing a variety of health issues. Be careful how much you use your mobile phone, either have it on loudspeaker or use earphones. There is mounting evidence of the harm they can cause. Also don’t sleep with phones or electronics in your bedroom. Friends and Family. It’s important to surround yourself with positive vital people. People who are negative or drain you seem to latch on if you let them. Just because someone’s a friend or relative doesn’t give them the right to continually drain you or fill your space with negativity. Be kind but keep it brief. Spoil yourself. At least once a week do something decadent like soak in a magnesium bath with natural oils to replemish those tired muscles or have a massage. At times put yourself first and just enjoy being. Finally, health, vitality, fitness and happiness is a whole package, it’s not just diet or exercise, it’s everything including our attitude to life in one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. Make sure you smile a lot and feel the endorphins kick in. Spring is special, let’s enjoy it!

Wouldn't Be Dead For Quids ANGELA HITZKE
We were holidaying in Italy and the man said, 'Bonjourno, are you here a for the Cinque Terre boat tripa?' They add an a to the ends of many words. We said, 'Yes'. He said, 'Follow me a', which we did. Dave had booked us for seven hours on a spectacular yacht to see these five colourful mountainous lands from the sea. Luigi led us to what was not a yacht but a large tinny with thatched roof and an esky which he pointed to and said, 'That’s the bar a help yourselves. The other two people can’t make it.' We thought he was taking us out to our yacht but we went past the yachts and the ships and headed out to sea. Dave leant over to me and said, 'Babe, they’ve bloody downgraded us as we’re the only ones. I’ll be f#cking saying something about this when we get back. Seven very expensive hours on this thing.' Suddenly Luigi called over to us, 'My apologies a, I’ve just been sent the photo of my passengers and you are most definitely not them. I have to take you back to shore.' So he turned the large tinny around and we chugged back past the ships and the yachts, clambered off and were welcomed onto the correct vessel. Our yacht. Nicola our hostess asked, 'Does anyone get seasick? Me, no never,' I said. The pregnant couple said the same as did the three supermodels already in their bikinis and stretched out on the bow of the yacht, exactly like in the movies. One-and-a-half hours in and I’m seasick. That never happens. The water was choppy and the horizon like a roller coaster. Nicola handed me the packet of anti nausea pills and off she went busily. I can’t read Italian so took two, apparently one was sufficient. I was thinking how the hell am I going to endure another fiveand-a-half hours of this torture inside? One hour later when the pills finally kicked in (as they’re part sedatives), I fell sound asleep in a bed below, face down, snoring during this beautiful romantic trip Dave booked. I woke after two hours, stumbled upstairs and Dave said, 'Hey Babe, how are you feeling?' Omg, what the f#ck happened to your face? I too had no idea as it was covered in red patches. Dave was affected a little differently. He had major sea legs happening for hours after and couldn’t find his balance. During the night while he was showering, I heard a bit of a crash. He’d fallen out of the shower.

Ocean Rhythms BY STEVE SHEARER
That delectable pattern, which we waited all autumn and all winter for, dissolved into a much needed very wet signal as moist onshore winds collided with an upper trough. Slow moving thunderstorms dumped serious rainfall on Lennox and surrounds. Both the surf pattern and the rainy pattern have now dissipated into the standard spring setup which sees weak mobile high pressure systems delivering northerly winds and rapid southerly changes. The best bang for buck activities are kite-boarding and flathead fishing but if you stay keen
The Pacific basin remains poised on the edge of El Nino but of interest is the possibility that we might see another El Nino summer like 2015/16. That saw warm water far enough West in the Pacific (in the Nino 4 region) that tropical low pressure systems delivered a constant supply of surf. At the moment there are early season tropical indicators bubbling up in the area near the Solomon Islands that offer some hope. This time of year is probably the hardest to scratch up a feed fishing as ocean water temperatures cool and cold green inshore water from the northerlies establishes. The best bet by far is the humble flathead and typical seasonal movement of these fish is towards the lower reaches of the estuaries for the annual breeding congregation. Drifting channel edges with baits or lures will find them eventually and big fish love hanging at the base of rock walls. Don't
forget to release the bigger, breeding females to keep the stocks healthy. That's all for this month. I'm off to Indo. Till next month, tight lines and tubular visions.

The end of winter was a bit of a surprise packet, mostly in a good way with what turned out to be a couple of back to back swells of very high quality. Winds were offshore or light, the sand was groomed nicely and apart from the somewhat rapacious crowds it was a very good time to be alive through the end of August.

Cars Of Lennox BY SHAN RAILTON
Make / Model – 1995 Toyota Hilux custom 4x4 Owner – Brock Everyone has a dream of what their first car will be, some want sporty, for others its luxury. For Brock it was superior four wheel drive ability on a budget. I think he's found his dream first car. LW – So Brock, what the have we got here? Brock – It's a 1995 Toyota Hilux with heaps of customising. It's a single cab with plenty of room for me and my girl. Inside it has been updated a bit with modern stereo and speakers, the previous owner has also installed a reverse camera and new, nicer seats. The outside is where it's at. LW – Yeah, it looks far from stock standard. What's happened? Brock – Mostly about decking it out to go serious four wheeling. It's been raised 3 inches, has a bullbar and winch, new gearbox, UHF, spotlights, steel Sunrasia rims and custom exhaust. LW – Wow, you've spent plenty of dollars then? Brock – No, I bought it like this for a great price off a mate. He spent the coin then decided to get a new car. All I've done is get the windows tinted by SurfWagon (thanks for the plug Brockie).

It's unreal to hear about some remote camping place and just be able to go up these crazy tracks and get there. LW – Yep, perfect getaway machine. Where next? Brock – I'm a bit limited in how far I can go as I need to be back at work Monday mornings but I'm looking at going to Fraser Island and Double Island Point soon. In the meantime just keep going fairly local. LW – Nice one mate. I hope your adventures continue being as fun as they have been and your 'Lux keeps on getting you there for years to come. your Pets
Vet Watch
BY EVAN KOSACK, LENNOX HEAD VETERINARY CLINIC
With the advent of the warmer weather of late winter and spring, and the odd days of rain, comes a major problem for our pets that owners need to be acutely aware of. You can probably guess where I'm going with this - yes it's my traditional warning about tick paralysis. I know I bang on about this each year, but tick paralysis is the number one killer of our pets here on the Far North Coast, and people still seem often blissfully unaware of the severity of the problem. This so very frustrating for vets having to treat such a horrible and complex syndrome with such a high mortality rate. So when is tick season’? Well, it's right now! The worst months for ticks are the last few weeks of winter, and all of spring. Summer is bad as well, but spring is absolutely horrible. Ticks can even pop up in autumn and early winter. So this means if your pet goes outside and has access to scrub or long grass, it's at risk of dying from tick paralysis. Long haired animals are best given an all-over crew-cut to enable easier location of ticks. Tick searches should be performed daily, ideally more than once by more than one person. Just an aside, tick searches are far from fool-proof. No-one will find every tick on their pet, every time. There are many products available that offer some protection to dogs, and to a lesser extent, cats. All of these older products (spot-ons, sprays, collars etc) have been eclipsed by the arrival over the last two years of several extremely effective
oral tick and flea preventatives that are given either monthly or three-monthly. In dogs, these oral chews have been used in millions of pets and have been shown to be extremely effective and safe, even in very young pups and pregnant bitches. They have made a spectacular difference to the incidence of tick paralysis. Most of the animals seen with paralysis are not on any effective prevention. It’s hard to stress how depressing this can be for the vets having to deal with the tragedy of another loss to tick paralysis (let alone the heartbreak felt by the owners), and it’s hard to exaggerate what an impact these products have made. So what about cats? Well, (drum roll please), there now is a first ever topical version (so, no giving pills to cats!) of a three month tick and flea preventative that is registered, safe and effective for use in our beloved moggies. Yay! Vets have been waiting for something like this for as long as I can remember (and I've been a vet for, gulp, 35 years). This product will protect for three months from one topical application and can be used from 11 weeks of age. If someone tells you that these measures are not necessary, or that there are handy home-remedies (grrrrr), or that the products are an evil global conspiracy to poison our pets (double grrrrrrr), then run swiftly in the opposite direction. Ticks are lethal and extremely common, and these products are the most effective we have ever had in the fight against tick paralysis. Use them, please! It doesn’t matter where you buy them, just get them now!

Dear Sarah
Dog Of The Month
Our 12 week old puppy keeps peeing and pooing everywhere. We’d love her to toilet outside, but she just doesn’t get it! What can we do about this? Maryanne W Hi Maryanne, Firstly, congratulations on your family’s new addition! So, it’s important to understand that what’s happening with your puppy at the moment is totally normal. Puppies don’t really start to get bladder or bowel control until at least 16 weeks, when the muscles that control the flow of urine and faeces are a little more developed. Still, here are some tips. 1. Make sure that you take your puppy out often. After she’s woken up, about 10 mins after she eats or drinks, and around about every hour. This provides her with loads of opportunity to go in the spot where you want her to. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you so that time doesn’t get away from you. 2. PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE. When she does go to the toilet where you’d like her to go, make a MASSIVE deal about it – like it’s the best thing that’s happened all day (let’s face it – it is). Give her treats, play with her and tell her how wonderful she is. Make sure you wait until just AFTER she’s finished what she needs to be doing before you get excited, or you risk her becoming distracted. 3. Watch her for signs that she needs to go and take her out as soon as you see them. Signs might include sniffing around in a circle, whinging, whining, heading towards the door, becoming fidgety or disappearing (classic I-need-to-go-for-a-poo sign).
Name: Louie
4. If she does have an accident inside, clean it up with something that does not contain ammonia. Urine contains ammonia, and if you end up using a product that contains ammonia, you’re not getting rid of the urine smell. Stick to disinfectants like Pine-O-Clean or Dettol to neutralise the odour molecules.
Age: 9
5. DO NOT RUB HER NOSE IN IT! This is an old wives' tale and it does nothing to teach the dog where you DO want them to toilet. Let’s face it, dogs sniff wee and poo for a living, they sniff each other’s butt to say 'hello' and they eat their own vomit! We think it’s disgusting, but to them, not so much.
Favourite thing to do: Ride in the back of Utes (barking to let people know he's going to the beach)

Lennox Head father of two Richard Atkin grew up in Canberra but his background is anything but typical. Born to a Malay mother and European-Australian father (who worked as a diplomat), he’s spent time living in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea, and Kenya as well as several places in Australia. He’s a qualified teacher but is putting his training to good use in a different kind of organisation. Richard is a Centre Manager and Mentor for an organisation called AIME, whose purpose is to end inequality through education. For the past 14 years in Australia, AIME has been connecting Indigenous young people with university and community mentors; supporting them to transition successfully through school and into a positive pathway at the same rate as every other Australian. Close to 10000 Indigenous students will participate in AIME nationally this year. Richard and his team of mentors work in one of the larger regions here on the NSW North Coast, with 1000 young people accessing the program from Coffs Harbour to Tweed Heads (and everywhere in between). According to Richard, Indigenous inequality is one of Australia’s biggest social injustices and he sees this work as an active part of the reconciliation process. He says ‘one of the program’s guiding principles is to reframe Indigenous identity as a source of strength not a reason for failure. We also support our mentees to understand that education is the key to future success and our mentors get to experience

Previous work includes roles in marketing and event management but when it comes down to it he says, ‘I’ve always had a passion for working with young people though. They have a way of looking at the world that is different to most adults; less fixed or limiting, more adaptable and creative’. If you want to find out more about AIME, head to aimementoring.com, Richard says, ‘The easiest way people can support is to buy some AIME Apparel (shop.aimementoring. com), most of the products feature student artworks as part of the design and all proceeds go back into the program’. What’s the best thing about your job? Creating positive change in the community I call home. Worst thing? Knowing there’s a lot more that can be done. Hobbies? Surfing, sport, spending time with family and friends. Work / Life philosophy? Being old has nothing to do with the number of years you’ve been alive; you’re young as long as you continue to learn and you’re old as soon as you stop.

Michelle Martinovich Is Ms October STORY AND PIC VIC LETO
Business Owner: Studio 57 new and pre-loved fashion Boutique Birthplace: Sydney Family: Husband Paul. Proud mother of Kelsey and Daniel Star Sign: Scorpio Favourite Food: Anything my children dish-up, they are really the best cooks! After leaving school in Sydney, Michelle Martinovich began working an office job in a bank. Ten years later in the mid 1980’s, single and in a job doing nothing for her sense of adventure, inspired by the employment prospects in Perth hosting the America’s Cup, Michelle threw it in to head west. Her life then changed forever when she found her way to Rottnest Island. In the space of a month she found a job in the only boutique on the island, and also met a travelling Kiwi working on the island, her future husband, Paul. They lived on Rottnest for nearly ten years. Michelle describes island life as, 'a quiet lifestyle of the good life, with lots of crayfish, lots of exercise (she also taught aerobic classes), and the meaningful place our babies were born.' After becoming a mum the children became Michelle’s priority and so she left the boutique. It was the boutique job though which was reigniting her ‘passion for fashion’, that was encouraged in her as a child by her grandmother and aunty who always dressed her up like a princess. Twenty-three years ago the family moved to Lennox and throughout this time Michelle has worked in a variety of local retail fashion stores. Also, the couple for a period of years in early 2000’s owned and operated their own Civilian clothing shops in Lennox and Ballina.
and relax while their ladies enjoy ‘the shopping therapy.’ She has made everything about the shop a comfortable and inviting space full of charm, and a type of expressive artwork that in itself reflects a combination of her years in fashion, blended with her own personal touch. Whether it’s stocking new or preloved fashion, one-off designer pieces, Italian linen, silk camisoles and slips, jewellery or accessories, it specifically captures the feminine essence. The shop though is only really a ray of Michelle as a person, who is a lovely warm, friendly and welcoming lady with loads of creativity, charm, style and grace. Hobbies? Gym, yoga, walking the dog down the beach
It will be five years in January, (when her children were all grown up making their own mark on the world), that Michelle decided it was time to focus seriously again on opening her own boutique.
Best thing about the job? Always meeting new and interesting people
Michelle’s smart utilisation of all the space in the layout of the upstairs Studio 57 boutique includes a very cool and open balcony area overlooking downtown Lennox and surrounds. She also has plenty of ‘man’ chairs for the guys to sit, chill

Teven-Tintenbar Regional Champions A record six students from Teven-Tintenbar Public School have secured spots to compete in the State Athletics Championships after some inspiring performances at the Regional Athletics Championships held at Lismore on Friday, 14 September. Year Four and Five students: Zappa Borich, Toby Davies, Thomas Mahon and Tex Kirkland successfully shaved two seconds off their previous best to win their heat, and then took another half a second off their heat time to romp home in first place in the Junior Boys Relay. A determined Isla Gillan perfected the frisbee flop to secure second place in the Eleven Years Girls High Jump, with a personal best jump height of 1.25m. Lacey Parrington, aged eight and in Year 2, toughed it out in a fast field in the 100-metre sprint to finish a highly impressive third in the Under eight girls. Special mention also to Oscar Godwin, aged 12, who narrowly missed out on securing a place at State when he finished fourth with a throw of 9.07m in the Senior Boys shotput, which was a PB of 77cm on his former best effort. School Principal Ginny Latta said that the school was rightly proud of the efforts of all their students, particularly given that they were competing against the best of the best from through-
out the region, including some big schools. 'Regionals takes in schools from Kempsey to Tweed, so it’s a big catchment area with a lot of talent. It’s really wonderful to see our students excel in this highly competitive environment, and it helps to demonstrate to the rest of our school population that anything is possible with a bit of training, commitment and self-belief,' she said. 'The whole school will be cheering them on at State, and we wish them every success.' The State Athletics Championships will be held at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay on 31 October/1 November.

Ballina Coast High School Farewell Yr 12 The first ever Ballina Coast High School Yr 12 are nearing the completion of their secondary education. This wonderful group of young men and woman have been at the front and centre of the many changes forced upon their education. They have shown remarkable resilience to combine as a year group and contribute to the total wellbeing of the new school. This outstanding effort was celebrated at an emotional farewell ceremony on the last day of term. Following the HSC examinations we will have the Formal night in November.
schools and several also from local private schools for our second year 6 into year 7 transition day. It was a huge success where students were able to work with Year 9 Peer Leaders and BCHS teachers enjoying many activities together starting a strong base for many great friendships in the future at our school. Presently we expect an enrolment of 160 students in Year 7 2019, an increase of about 40 percent to 2018 and 50 percent to 2017 Year 7 numbers. This is a very encouraging statistic and strong evidence that the community is committed to BCHS as their school of choice for their children.

Transition for Yr 6 to Yr 7
Over the course of the term we have been exploring our body and its functions. We have learnt about lots of the different systems nervous system and the senses, circulatory system, muscular system, digestive system, skeletal system and the respiratory system. This learning helps us to identify how to care for our own bodies and how we can make informed choices to keep it functioning at its best.
Recently we welcomed over 160 year 6 students from our partner primary
To enhance our learning we collaborate with the local expertise of Dr Angus

Lambie from Lennox Point Dental. Angus helped us to learn how to care for our teeth before taking us for a ride in his ‘rocket chair.’ We also talked about the sometimes foods and the best way to care for our teeth after having them (drinking water). The children had a ride on the dental chair and opened wide for Angus to count their 20 teeth. Angus and Christie gave us a brand new bamboo toothbrush, some colouring in and an information sheet for our homes about how to best care for our teeth. Lennox Point Dental is engaging in an initiative to recycle toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and caps, toothbrush and toothpaste outer packaging and floss containers. These recycled materials will also raise money for their charity of choice, Sea Bird Rescue. If you have any of the above mentioned items, please bring them to Lennox Point Dental or to the preschool. These types of experiences aren’t possible without the generous collaboration with our community. We will be hosting our annual fathers' night at the end of October on Tuesday the 30 October and Thursday 1 Nov. Our enrolments for 2019 have been finalized. The orientation evening is 28 November at 7pm at Preschool.
Lennox Head Public School Kinder 2019 With 2019 almost upon us, it is important that any enrolments for kindergarten are completed and handed in to the school office. If you know of anyone moving to the area please let them know to hand in the school enrolment form as soon as possible. Our first kinder orientation will be held on Tuesday 30 October. By Alani Opera House Choir Late September, students travelled from Lennox Head to perform at the Sydney Opera House. For this particular NSW Public School performance, students were part of the Bennelong concert. To achieve this opportunity, the school was required to go through a selection process
competing for a spot against schools from all over the state. The students practised all year for this occasion and can be very proud of their performance. Congratulations to all. By Ivy and Alani Healthy Harold As soon as the van rolled up, students from kindergarten to Year 6 started visiting the Life Education Van. This state wide program aims to educate students about healthy lifestyle choices to keep our bodies healthy and strong. The students were extremely excited and learnt a great deal about correct foods to eat, impact of sugar on our bodies, cyber bullying and the negative consequences of the use of drugs. It is a very worthwhile program to be involved in. By Malia Lions Art Show (photo) 1/2O was very proud of their finished class art work that was entered into the recent Lions Art Show. By Ivy

Lennox Longboarders On sunday 9 September we held our monthly club round at Lennox Main. Gone was the rain. We enjoyed a pristine spring day sun and plenty of it, favourable winds tides and some swell all came together to make it a fun morning. Thirty members surfed. Stand out was young Nathan Mackenzie surfing his new Amos longboard and threading it with style winning both his heat & First final. Another highlight of the morning was the donation to representatives from The NSW Cancer Council (Kate McBride), Lennox Surf lifesaving Club (Richard Hughes) and The Disabled Surfing Association. Winners of the Vouchers from Lennox Surf, were to Jake Ryan and Una Durkin.

All Abilities Netball Team Celebrates A big thank you to Lennox Head Lions Club who have fundraised for our All Abilities Netball Team, The Stingrays, for several years. This year we had the opportunity to attend an All Abilities Netball Carnival in Sydney thanks to Lennox head Lions.
Thanking you, Karen Wilson and Kaye Walker , All Abilities Coach-Coordinators
On 8 and 9 September Manly Waringah Netball Association held the All Abilities Netball Carnival. This was a great opportunity for our team to show off our skills and compete for the Championship trophy. The All Abilities Championships' main aim is to bring teams from Netball Associations in NSW in a spirit of inclusion and friendly competition. We played five games winning two, drawing one and losing two. Rebecca Simmons and Avalon Grimson shot some fantastic goals and it's good to see all their hard work in action. Our defenders were in true form intercepting passes and stopping the opposition's goals. Although we didn't win the Championship Trophy we did have one of our girls, Avalon Grimson, win the Most Valuable Player of the day. Avalon was a very proud young woman.
Whistler Champs
A bunch of Lennox Head Touch Footballers have come away with the big prize from a Whistler (USA) summer comp. The Whistler touch footy comp ran for 12 weeks through the summer. There were a total of 10 teams in the competition. The Lennox team all grew up playing Lennox Head Dolphins and Lennox Trojan rugby and all went to school together. The team they played had won the premiership 4 times in a row so this was their first defeat. The Lennox team had tied with the same team in the middle of the season so it was a tight grandfinal. We all got medals and a bar tab at the infamous Longhorn Saloon in the centre of Whistler. Left to right: Ty Nikora, Lachlan Jones, Callum Jones, Ned Hawkey, Jai Stafford, Sam Dwyer, Reid Pownall, Callum Jones, Fraser Jones. All Girls Surfriders

The September club round was met with warm weather and beautiful clean 2-3ft waves. We held two banks at Lennox Beach and made the most of the delightful conditions before the NE wind kicked in and the tide dropped. Well done to the junior intermediates that surfed their final in the depleted low tide waves but made it look amazing! Also a warm welcome to our newest club members, what a fantastic day to begin your All Girls surf adventure. Pirates Get Ready Summer’s coming and once again we will be hearing the crack of leather on willow as we dust off our whites and head out to represent our town in the local cricket competitions.
us via email lennoxpirates@gmail.com or visit our website at lennoxpirates.com to register online via the Play Cricket logo.
The Lennox Head Pirates Cricket Club had a very successful 2017/2018 season and is looking for players to join the club and help us continue to grow our reputation as one of the premier clubs in the local cricket leagues. Last season, the Lennox Pirates fielded four junior teams: one in the under 16s, two in the under 14s and one in the under 12s. These young Pirates were competitive in all grades, with our U14 Scallywags making it to the semi-finals, our U16s winning their grand final, and our U12s winning their competition undefeated! We also introduced our first U11s squad. Our cricket programs for our youngest cricketers (4-9 years old) also took off and our senior cricketers had a strong season with all five teams competing in semi-finals. Our first grade team that competes in the regionally based LJ Hooker League impressed with another solid season.
Rainbow Dragons Lennox Head-based Rainbow Region Dragon Boat Club went south to take on a tough southerly wind change and 20 other teams, coming first in the Women’s, second in the Men’s (a combined clubs team) and fourth in the Mixed in the 200m sprints, at the Coffs Harbour Dragon Boat Club Regatta, at Mylestom. It was a significant win for Rainbow Dragons. They have been creeping up the Regional ranks and at times there has been barely .5 second between winners and Rainbow’s 3rd place so this victory under extreme conditions was so much sweeter. Club Captain, Leanne Somerville, proudly said, 'Once again our team sportsmanship, spirit and strong, controlled paddling were on display. The improvement in everyone’s fitness and technique has certainly improved our competitive edge.' Club members are keen to test their skills and fitness at the Grafton Jacaranda regatta in October.
Training for seniors, including first grade, is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4.30pm at the Williams Reserve cricket nets. So if you think you or your children may be interested in playing cricket with the region’s strongest club, you can contact
