Our cover girl this month is little Mary Hobkin (thanks to her mum Anna who styled the photo, and to photographer Sarah Rickard).

The picture was taken after fires ravaged local scrub in the area last year. It's a beautiful image and I thought particularly relevant at the moment as we've had a smokey week from fires that are already burning in parts of New South Wales and winter isn't even over yet. Luckily, as we go to print it is raining, but let's not rest on our laurels. I know our own RFS is gearing up for the fire season.

Let's hope they don't have to save the town again!

On a slightly more philosophical note, I've been musing, yet again, about how lucky I am. My greatest luck comes from the community I live in and, as a small businessperson, from the amazing support I get from other local businesses.

I don't care if I've said this before: I know that a lot of you lovely advertisers keep backing up every month, not so much for your own business, but because you want to support this magazine and what it stands for - providing unpretentious value and information to individuals, organisations, charities and businesses that are uniquely Lennox Headian.

Paradoxically, while the Wave's core purpose is not to make money, it must make money if it wants to continue to be here.

On a mild 6 August night we were pleased to see 20 members with Ballina Shire Council (Council) represented by Cr Cadwallader.

The Association identified concerns regarding water quality, the need for an educational programme and signage, co-operative planning between responsible organisations and harm minimisation without discouraging use of the Lake.

A Sea Rock Wall between Byron Street and Sport and Recreation has been under consideration by Council since 2016 as part of the Coastal Zone Management Plan. Cr Cadwallader advised it is necessary for action as rising sea levels are projected to swamp our village and beaches along the east

Preschool Funding Last month, following our monthly management meeting, we were able to inform the Lennox Head community that we had been allocated Federal funding of $600,000 for a second preschool. One of the conditions of this funding is that Council is able to secure some land to lease to the community group.

While Council has continued to consider options for allocating land, meeting the timeline of December is starting to be of concern.

While the preschool committee and Council agree that it is vital new infrastructure, we now also agree that we need to communicate to the funding body that the time frame is unrealistic and that we need some kind of extension.

With the ever-increasing population, the community and Council support the principle of being able to provide this extra infrastructure for preschool provision in our community, to be run as a not-for-profit organization and provide affordable preschooling.

Hopefully a meeting with some Council members, Nationals MLC, Ben Franklin and the minister will give us some more clarity.

We will let the community know.

Landmarks Of Lennox— St John The Baptist Anglican Church

Around 1999 the oldest building in Lennox Head was sold then relocated for the second time. On this occasion, St John the Baptist Anglican Church, constructed in 1898 on North Creek Road, and complete with its beautiful stained glass cathedral window, was resited as a private dwelling.1 Its first move was around 1945 to 9 Byron Street where it was reconstructed with much of the original material ‘found to be unserviceable owing to the devastation caused by borers and white ants, and by the ravages of time.’2 With seating for about 60, it served the

needs of worshippers until 1999, when a new Church with seating for 150 was planned for the present site at the corner of Byron and Fern Streets.

Population growth made this transition inevitable but valiant attempts were made by the Lennox Head Heritage Committee (LHHC) and concerned residents to retain our oldest building in the village. Hilary Wilson, then Convenor of the LHHC, proposed acquisition by Ballina Shire Council (Council) for a heritage museum.3 With insufficient Council or community resources to meet anticipated market value of land and building, the proposal

was unsuccessful but the building still rests in Lennox Head on North Creek Road, not far from its original location.

Surf Club Redesign Council has released the plans for the proposed new Lennox Head Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club House.

As had been previously communicated, the plans show the location of the new building slightly south of the existing Club house, and include demolition of the existing toilet block and inclusion of new toilet facilities within the new building.

These plans are part of the overall review of the South Eastern Lake Precinct, undertaken by external consultants Complete Urban.

Access to and usage of the new Surf Club building will be based upon principles that differ from the existing usage.

The building will become a Council asset, like the Community Centre and other Council buildings in Ballina. It will include a commercial café (to be leased out), upstairs commercial restaurant (also to be leased out), Council managed rooms for hire, and space for the existing Surf Life Saving Club.

Council says its ‘commitment to investigating this new facility has been predicated on the basis that the same management model currently in place for the Ballina Surf Club property would be implemented.

‘That is, rather than constructing a building for use exclusively by the Surf Life Saving Club, the preferred approach is to construct a community building within which a Surf Life Saving Club can effectively operate.’

‘The ... commercial component (restaurant/kiosk) [will] help offset the substantial ongoing operational and maintenance costs.’

Staff comments in the report to Council say that as a guide, the annual income generated from the Ballina Surf Club inclusive of restaurant, kiosk, and meeting and function rooms is $128,000. Expenses (including cleaning, electricity, service consumption and building maintenance) are $124,000.

They also make the point that a new building of the size envisaged, constructed in a harsh coastal environment, is expensive to build, maintain and operate on an ongoing basis.

Be A Good Neighbour And Get Fire Ready MONTY GIBBS, PRESIDENT

Our local Rural Fire Service has some key messages as we approach the start of the Bush Fire Danger Period (Fire Season) on 1 September 2018.

We recommend everyone takes the time to look at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au, for lots of information.

We have all walked outside and smelled smoke and wondered where the fire is. To find out exactly where fires are burning you can download the ‘Fires Near Me’ app onto your phone. If a fire has been reported the info will be logged into the app and at your fingertips.

For your family’s safety, make sure you have done your Bushfire Survival Plan.

There is an easy quick guide on the RFS website. There will also be information uploaded to the Lennox Head Rural Fire Brigade Facebook page.

Fire permits are required from 1 September and they are FREE. Fire Permits help ensure fire is used safely during the Bush Fire Danger

Period. A permit imposes conditions on the way a fire is lit and maintained, and can only be issued by authorised permit issuing officers.

We have two permit issuing officers in our brigade. If you need a permit please give notice as it can take a few days for our volunteers to come and see you.

Remember pile burns should be no bigger than 2m wide by a maximum of 1.5m high, there must be at least 4.5m of cleared space around the burn.

Contact your local Fire Control Centre 6671 5500 for a permit, Heavy fines are in place for those who light up without official paperwork.

Residential Properties Ballina Shire Council has a Backyard Burning Policy and there is more information on restrictions and exemptions on their website.

Burning of domestic waste is prohibited throughout the shire except where no domestic waste collection service is available. Burning of vegetation is

also restricted in all urban areas in the Shire. There are a few exemptions, including BBQs, hazard reduction burns, agricultural operations, fire training etc. Breaches may lead to a penalty infringement notice of up to $1000.

In all areas of NSW you cannot burn certain items including tyres, coated wire, solvent containers & residues, paint containers & residues and treated timber – copper chromium arsenate (CCA) & pentachlorophenol (PCP).

There is also a general obligation for any person to prevent or minimise pollution when burning.

Weekend events later in September, but here in Lennox, with the increase in fire activity, we will hold the Lennox Get Ready Day at the fire station on Sunday 9 September, the same day as the Lennox Markets. We hope to see you all there.

Senior Deputy Captain Shane moves on On behalf of the Brigade, we say farewell to Shane Smallcombe who has taken on a full-time position to support the NSW RFS at Coonabarabran. He takes on the position of Operations Level One District Assistant.

Shane was our Senior Deputy Captain/ Training Officer and will be greatly missed by all.

Best wishes to your family, enjoy the change and hope to see you back someday. Lennox will always be home.

A third trial of shark nets will not be run on the north coast this summer, following local community consultation which revealed support for shark nets had declined.

Trials of helicopter and drones for aerial surveillance, and VR4G listening stations will continue.

The NSW Government’s shark tagging program is the largest in the world with 291 White Sharks, 38 Tiger Sharks and 61 Bull Sharks being actively tracked by DPI scientists.

These tagged sharks are tracked on NSW’s network of 21 listening stations located up and down the coast from Merimbula to Tweed Heads.

In two years, there have been more than 26,000 shark detections on these stations which have been communicated to water users via the SharkSmart app.

The Minister Primary Industries and Regional Water Niall Blair reserves the right to deploy nets or further trials if he is of the opinion that shark activity has increased.

Be Waterwise — Tips For Saving Water With the NSW Department of Primary Industries officially declaring the entire state in drought, regional water supply authority Rous County Council is encouraging local residents to continue to save water where they can.

Until now, the North Coast has been either classified as being not in, or recovering from, drought. Last month's announcement upgrades the region’s declaration to drought affected.

Although the region’s principal water source, Rocky Creek Dam, is currently at 95% capacity, saving water everyday is important.

Level one water restrictions will be activated if Rocky Creek Dam drops to 60%.

'Locally, residents have a great track record with saving water. Since the 1990s average water use has dropped

by around 45%', said General Manager, Phillip Rudd.

'Saving water and using this resource wisely, is something Rous County Council encourages the community to always do. There is a number of simple everyday steps that can help reduce our water use.'

These include: • Watering your garden after 3pm and before 10am.

• Fitting all hand-held hoses with a trigger nozzle, so you can turn off water instantly.

• Use a broom or outdoor blower to clean pathways, driveways and decking.

• When washing your vehicle or boat, use a bucket or hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle. Wash it on the grass where water will run off onto the lawn or garden.

Rebates For Rainwater Tanks As an incentive to save water, Rous County Council offers a rebate of up to $2,170 for residents currently connected to town water in the Ballina, Byron, Lismore and Richmond Valley local government areas to purchase and install a new rainwater tank.

To check whether you are eligible for a rebate call Rous County Council’s Water Sustainability Officer, Kylie Bott direct on (02) 6623 3835.

In the meantime Rous County Council continues to progress the delivery of the Future Water Strategy which identifies how the region’s water supply will be secured for the next 50 years, taking into consideration the growing population and changing climate.

Lennox Lightning Toastmasters Lennox Lightning Toastmasters held a couple of cracking meetings again in August. We were delighted to hear that Club President John Peacock had recently won a stand-up comedy competition in Byron Bay. John attributes a lot of his speech craft to Toastmasters and is delighted to be seeing the benefits of the learnings come to fruition.

People join Toastmasters for a host of reasons. John Peacock says, ‘Toastmasters has refined the way I speak to an audience, it has helped me relax and also to overcome some really bad nerves, which were detracting from my performances. The feedback you receive from other members every time you deliver a spoken piece is invaluable.

We talk about points for improvement and it’s those things you might not be aware of that really help to make you a better speaker.’

One of the most common misconceptions is that Toastmasters is just for people who are trying to overcome a fear of public speaking.

It is a big driver of new members and Lennox Lightning has had several of our

current members give speeches at their children’s weddings, something they never imagined they would be able to deliver. There are many more motivators than that though.

Other members speak of the camaraderie and social aspects of the meetings. There is always laughter and enjoyment at club meetings. Some members just love language and words and appreciate the way other people use language.

We’ve had new teachers and aspiring politicians, those who are starting new businesses and those who are beginning university studies. Basically there is nothing to lose by becoming a more confident and polished speaker.

Lennox Lightning Toastmasters meets at Club Lennox, 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. New members and visitors are always welcome, with no compulsion to speak if you don’t want to and no pressure to join if you think it’s not for you.

Second Hand Saturday If clutter is starting to crowd your living spaces then perhaps now is the perfect time to get ready for Second Hand Saturday.

Council and North East Waste are once again organising the North Coast’s biggest day of garage sales for Saturday 22 September and registrations are now open.

Coordinator of Second Hand Saturday, Linda Tohver said, 'Often the hardest part of planning a garage sale is where to begin.'

According to the latest Annual Choosi Clutter Report, there is an estimated $60 billion worth of stuff sitting unused in Australian homes with around six cubic metres per household.

'The report estimates that if we put this clutter into standard packing boxes, it would be enough to create a wall six boxes high around the entire Australian coastline,' she said.

The most common types of clutter tend to be general odds and ends followed by clothing and footwear, paper, books/ records/CDs, materials for hobbies and interests, appliances and kitchenware and technology products.

1. Why did you start your business?

We wanted to start a business that would create positive change in the world. We’ve been travelling in Southeast Asia since we were teenagers. We wanted to stay connected and give back to the people and the cultures that we love so much so we combined that drive with our passion for specialty coffee and created Old Quarter Coffee Merchants; a 100% Direct Trade specialty coffee roastery and café that improves farmers' livelihoods.

2. What is the philosophy that drives it?

We’ve always believed that as a collective, humans can create real and lasting change and as consumers we have a lot of power. Coffee is the second most traded commodity on the planet, after oil. It’s also an industry with so much exploitation, so it’s a powerful force for change.

3. What’s been your biggest lesson along the way?

There hasn’t been just one big lesson but so many small lessons. Business for us is as much about growing as individuals as it is about actually growing the business. The most rewarding part is that we can live out our values and our ethics without compromising a successful business. We live in a new era of social enterprise creating change and it’s so rewarding to be a part of business for good.

4. What do you love most about your business?

Partnerships and the sense of community. Our motivation has always been to improve the lives of our farming partners overseas but our partnerships here in Australia are equally as important and rewarding. It’s all about the human connection and whether it’s a café, retail store owner or our daily customers, we are so grateful to have a network of people who support our vision.

Lennox Lions Club PAUL BRYANT

This year's art show will feature over 100 works of art, pottery and photography from our local community and schools. It will be held in our local school hall as usual. The event will be programmed as follows.

BACCI Spring Art Competition BACCI (Ballina Arts & Crafts Centre Inc) is a non-profit organisation and a group of creative artisans who enjoy displaying their artwork, plus having fun along the way. Members come from all over the region, including Lennox Head, Newrybar, Dunoon, Broadwater, Lismore, Brunswick Heads and Alstonville, and new members are welcome.

BACCI is celebrating its 20th anniversary and will soon be hosting its annual Spring Exhibition. Paintings, pottery, woodwork, jewellery, carvings, weavings and much more will be on display.

This event is a fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease (MND NSW), to increase awareness and help purchase equipment for daily assistance.

Shortys is Three Shortys Restaurant and Bar has been around for a while, but it is three years since the business was bought by current owners, Pete and Emily.

Headliners Chorus The Headliners Chorus travelled to Murwillumbah recently to take part in their Festival of Performing Arts.

In their latest appearance, a small group of Headliners entertained Ballina Day VIEW Club at their Christmas in July Luncheon on 25 July. Getting into the Christmas spirit in the middle of the year was a challenge but the Chorus members pulled it off with pizazz. Many of the VIEW club ladies also got into the Christmas spirit dressing up in Santa hats, t-shirts and bling. It was a lot of fun when they joined with the chorus in singing some of their favourite carols.

These community performances are a favourite part of Headliners’ singing engagements and they actively seek

to support community events but are also available for private and corporate functions. They can and have sung at birthdays, anniversary parties, weddings and even funerals. If the whole chorus is too big or overwhelming for your particular function they can prune it

down to a smaller group.

European Meanderings Local artist Christine Read is holding an art exhibition at Lennox Arts Collective (LAC) starting on 31 August and running until 13 September. The show includes many small and inexpensive works, most are priced under $200.

Christine explains, 'After my travels in France and England this year with a delightful group of people who came along on my art tours, I was asked about my travel sketches and paintings.

So I decided to put them into a little exhibition at Lennox Arts Collective.'

About Christine Read Christine is a practising artist and holds regular classes and workshops at LAC. She enjoys playing with many facets of art practice including drawing, painting and silk screen printing.

Christine started organises and runs art retreats locally and overseas.

Christine says, ‘On our travels we visit

art galleries, tour interesting places and draw and paint our surroundings and activities. This exhibition, ‘European Meanderings’ is the work produced by me while on the tours and some created later from resources brought home.’

Wildskin By NORPA Eva believes the only way to mend her broken life is to go solo on the road. Lost, alone and under-prepared, she soon finds herself breaking rules and embracing danger.

After a long night of the soul, encountering wild animals and decidedly odd humans, Eva discovers she can handle any challenge life dares to throw at her.

Wildskin showcases an all-female ensemble of riotous physical performers, each portraying an array of hilarious, recognisable and oddball characters Eva encounters on her journey.

Together they flirt with bush-horror conventions, to bring you a night of dark and daring theatre.

'We wanted to explore and subvert the view of regionality and the idea of the bush horror,' said Julian Louis, Wildskin Director and NORPA Artistic Director. 'I’m inspired by creating scenarios for great performers to work in. The cast of Wildskin includes top level circus and physical theatre performers and actors working with an incredible creative team. Our works are partly written but are also partly

devised so there’s space for the performer to improvise and to have real input into how the story develops. I find this collaborative approach creates surprising and exciting theatre,' said Louis.

A person's will is likely to be one of the most important documents they will make in their life. Having no will, or a poorly drafted will, can have serious financial and other consequences for those who are left behind. However, even with so much online information and do-it-yourself will kits available, we seem to still be getting it wrong. In fact statistics from the Supreme Court point to an explosion in disputed wills in recent years, with a 59 % rise in litigation between 2005 and 2013. So why is this?

It has been argued that this is due to the breakdown in family relationships and social changes that have seen the emergence of more blended families.

Some cite the fact that grandparents and relatives are now more likely than ever to have the full-time care of children, and that more people are

raising children who aren't biologically related to them.

There is certainly evidence to suggest that the increase in remarriage and second or third families correlates with the growth in the number of family provision claims. However, there has also been an increase in the size of estates in line with increasing property values. People are also holding more wealth in superannuation, which may on death be paid into the estate but will often be paid directly to dependants.

These are just some of the factors that have increased the complexity of estate planning and getting one's affairs in order properly.

There are ways people can ensure their wishes are respected and fulfilled.

The best way to avoid problems is to give some thought to what they own, and who needs to be provided for, and make sure that they revise their will if circumstances change.

Sally Lindenberg, Instrument Repairer It was her connection with renowned Australian clarinet player Don Burrows that led Sally Lindenberg to one of the most unusual jobs many of us can imagine.

She is a brass and woodwind instrument technician, which basically means she is trained to repair and service instruments like clarinets, flutes, trumpets and saxophones.

‘I went to a workshop with Don Burrows when I was about 12. I had started playing the clarinet when I was eight, but I knew I didn’t want to be a professional musician. It was Don who suggested that repairs might be a good career for me,’ she says.

‘I’d always been very technically minded, fiddling around with my sax, so it made a lot of sense to me,’ she says.

Not only did Don Burrows suggest the career, but he also connected Sally with people in the field and facilitated work placements and work experience after school.

Brass and Woodwind technician is not a recognised trade in Australia, so Sally had to navigate her way to the top of the

field with help from Burrows and others she met along the way.

After her first job with the Australian Academy of Music, she headed overseas to Dublin to work under the tutelage of well-respected technician Paul Ryan.

She spent two years working for him, where she says she ‘learned a lot’.

In 2003 she returned home to Australia and established her own business in Brisbane.

In 2012 she was given a Winston Churchill Fellowship of $25,000 to travel the world, learn more about the trade and bring that learning back to Australia.

These days she is President of the 1,300 member organisation, The National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians.

Although the name suggests otherwise, this body was started in the US but is now an international organisation with members from around the world.

She is the first President from outside the US. These days she runs her business out of a very impressive garage in Lennox

Head, where she not only carries out repairs but also sells second hand restored instruments.

Keith The Thief SHORT STORY BY TODD MAGUIRE

It was generally agreed around town that Keith the Thief was a mean man. He ran the general store and charged like a wounded bull. So mean was he that he probably still had the first dollar he ever earned.

No matter how hard we tried we could never get the better of him.

But then there was this one time….so we thought.

It had been a great day fishing, despite only coming up with a few lousy Australian salmon. A great fighting fish but they tasted like recycled cardboard, no matter how much lemon and salt they were drowned in. Unfortunately, Keith’s hamburgers seemed a better idea.

‘So how did you go today?’ Keith enquired from the kitchen of his general store. He flipped our burgers with great skill, the aroma sending us into a trance.

‘Any chance of offloading me a feed?’ He smiled greedily through his unkempt red beard.

Keith was as tight as a cat’s bum, but we thought we could take him for a ride.

‘We caught some beautiful salmon today mate…but they’re worth quite a few bob.’

‘Really?’ The wooden cogs in his head started to turn. ‘Well listen…I’ll give you these hamburgers on the house.

Anything for a good feed of fish.’

Keith’s burgers tasted great, despite the ridiculous price he charged for them.

‘Here’s the drum Keith.’ This was our big chance to square up with the shameless

thief. ‘We’ll give you two fresh fish - and you can throw in a couple of six packs of beer as well for our trouble.’

Keith wiped the sweat from his brow with his greasy apron and thought, 'Two burgers and half a case of beer for two choice fish. I can’t lose. Ok boys… but don’t go telling anyone I gave you freebies. Especially me wife, she’ll drag me over the coals.’

‘No worries Keith, your secret’s safe with us.’

The deal was settled and everyone was pleased. We were cheering as we left the store. We had given him a dud feed which was only destined for our cat, and we were at least fifty bucks in front.

This dubious barter system went on for another few weeks and it was smiles all around. We were over the moon because we were finally beating the thief at his own game. At last we were getting our own back on his overpriced burgers and overpriced beers.

Until one day, we arrived at the shop and Keith was nowhere to be seen.

Apparently he had gone out of town for a couple of days. His wife was running the store so there were no deals going down this day. She ran an even tighter ship than her spouse.

‘Hey Ruby.’ We smugly enquired. ‘How nice are those fish Keith has been bringing home for dinner?’

‘That rubbish!! Keith wouldn’t know a blind mullet from a snapper!!’Ruby was not a happy camper. ‘He brought that first batch home, and after I got it out of him what they cost I clipped him fair across the ear with one of them!’

We were very excited to hear of Keith’s dilemma but didn’t want Ruby to know

that we were the source of the domestic quarrel. You didn’t mess with the thief’s wife. Ruby was a big lady; it would only take 11 of her to make a dozen.

‘But luckily,’ her tone changed, ‘the Italian guy over the road thinks they are the grouse.’ She beamed to our surprise.

‘Keith has been selling them to him for sixty bucks a pop, and Spiro can’t get enough of them!’

Our jaws dropped in disbelief. Keith the Thief had got us again.

‘So boys, you can just keep them bloody dreadful fish coming,’ Ruby laughed heartily and her whole body shook in waves.

‘And lads, that’ll be fifteen bucks for the two burgers thank you.’

Lennox Head Landcare Winter is over and with warmer temperatures ‘pythons’ will be emerging from winter hidey-holes. You’ll find them sunbaking on paths, beach tracks and sometimes on roads, so keep an eye out for them.

Perambulating pythons: Unfortunately roads are where many pythons meet their demise at this time of year. They’re particularly slow slitherers so be careful when you’re driving, there’s a good chance a basking python might be just around the corner or casually making a road crossing.

Paisley pythons: Pythons are beautifully patterned, nonvenomous snakes. Their heads are triangular and their colour is highly variable (olive, grey, brown and black) with cream and gold markings. Patterning may be diamond-shaped or more intricate.

Resident pythons: Around this area the coastal carpet python and the diamond python are our local residents. They can live for 20 years and grow to four metres long.

Python Pilates: Pythons kill their prey by constriction and suffocation then eat it head-first. They can separate the two halves of their lower jaw allowing them to stretch their mouths very wide. This, along with extremely stretchy skin helps snakes swallow prey up to four times larger than their normal mouth size. That’s a big gob-full of tucker!

Back-pointing teeth on each side of the jaw alternately grip and release prey, promoting movement into the python’s body.

Saliva acts to lubricate and the ribs of pythons aren’t attached to the sternum permitting even greater flexibility.

Food for pythons: Pythons have a ssssixth ssssense for finding food and it lies along their lips. Heat-sensitive pits allow pythons to detect tiny differences in temperature aiding their nocturnal hunting of warm-blooded animals like mice and rats.

They also eat lizards and smaller snakes.

Snakes and ladders: Pythons sometimes enter houses and occasionally you might hear one slithering about in your ceiling, but don't be worried, they’re doing you a favour. They usually only enter when there’s a mouse or rat infestation and they generally leave when they’ve cleaned out the place. They are protected and a licence is required to keep them, so leave them alone and they’ll do the same.

Monty python: In spring sometimes snakes can be seen coiled and writhing about each other in what most people presume is slinky snake sex. It’s actually two males battling for dominance, mating is apparently a more sedate affair.

Chocolate and Walnut Brownie cake 220g dark chocolate, chopped 150g butter, chopped 1/4 cup (60ml) water 3/4 cup (165g) caster sugar 1 cup (150g) self raising flour 3 eggs 150g dark chocolate grated, extra 3/4 cup (90g) chopped walnuts Grease and line with baking paper a 23cm square slab cake pan.

Place the chocolate, water, butter and sugar in a medium saucepan and stir over low heat, without boiling, until the chocolate is melted.

Cool for 10 mins.

Stir in eggs, flour extra chocolate and nuts.

Pour mixture into prepared pan.

Bake in moderately slow oven for about 45 mins.

Cool in pan.

Dust with icing sugar and serve with fresh berries.

Lessons From A Rainbow Vest Most of my adult life I’ve dressed conservatively. Nothing too out there. While I have a deep love of bright colours, I’ve never had the courage to leave the house dressed in them. My soul screams for wardrobe technicolour and yet mostly I come back to the same few boring old wardrobe staples: jeans and a plain jumper, or shorts and tee - in various shades of navy and black. You can take the girl out of Melbourne, but you can’t take the black from her wardrobe.

Recently, Emily Rooney (who you might remember from such Wave columns as Home Alchemy) purchased an incredibly bright and bold wooly rainbow vest as a very generous surprise gift. And it is SO me, if I’m brave enough to fully own who I really am.

Last month, Em and I flew to Melbourne to go to Hay House Writers Workshop, and I very intentionally packed my new rainbow vest. It was going to be a courageous move to show up as the biggest, boldest, best version of me. Famous Hay House writer version of me. Pretty confronting. Very uncomfortable.

And while I was expecting to feel a little squirmish in it, I wasn’t expecting the big insights into the way I show up in the world (or, rather, run and hide).

As someone who has craved being seen, wearing a rainbow vest shows me just how unwilling I am to stand up and allow myself to be visible. I’ve been great at hiding. And in this vest I could physically feel myself trying to shrink. Make up for the boldness of my clothes, by becoming meek. Part of me longs to be the star of the show, and in direct conflict with that part of me are so many other parts of me that want to just run and hide. Blend in. Be totally incognito. Wall flower material. Not take up space. Sadly, these other parts of me, generally come out on top.

It’s funny how sometimes the thing we desire the most, we hold ourselves back from.

Being the truest expression of yourself can be really uncomfortable. It’s not easy to be who you really are. And, in this modern world, it’s virtually impossible without mind chatter coming in an attempt to pull you back into line.

‘Who do you think you are? Attention seeking weirdo. Everyone is looking at you thinking ‘what a wanker!”

No wonder so many of us are creatively stifled, completely disconnected from joy or desperately seeking purpose and meaning.

With that in mind, I want to leave you with a question, or two.

What could you do to stretch and express your biggest, boldest, best self? What is your version of a rainbow vest? And are you brave enough to go public in it?

To wrap up the seven pillars of overall health I’ll finish today with my favourite and most misunderstood pillar, mental health.

We often seem to forget we have a mental health just like a physical health. We seem to only address mental health when it has become a mental illness. Early intervention is the key to mental health. Knowing how to identify the signs and symptoms is what can keep us in good mental health. I plan on educating our community about this so stay tuned.

It seems we are people who do many things for others but never for ourselves. Always prioritising others over ourselves.

I’m all for helping others, I’ve build a life in doing so but I am also aware of the detriment to your health if you don’t value your own mental health. We work 40+ hours a week for someone else, often causing us stress. We run around after the kids all weekend doing pick ups and drop offs, leaving minimal time for ourselves. When we get mentally ill we go to the doctor, get a pill and think that will fix the problem. It’s sure not that easy. I want to share three simple things you can do to better your mental health and decrease the chance of developing a mental illness.

First is be sure to have self care time. Allocate at least 1 hour a week for this. This needs to be something you don’t do any other day of the week and it needs to be specific to you. It could be taking a bath and reading a book, going for a soft sand walk or making a trip to Crystal Castle (my personal favourite). Whatever it is, it must be about you. The second is random acts of kindness. Don’t be so caught up in your world that you forget there’s a much bigger world out there that you can influence by acting with kindness. People in this world are becoming more and more selfish everyday and that certainly isn’t good for anyone. Step up and look out for your neighbours and you too will receive a gift. A gift of being a good person and doing a good deed. Lastly get educated. Don’t ignore the awareness around this space, educate yourself on signs and symptoms because unfortunately statistics tell us we are about to hit a mental health epidemic thanks to modern living and lifestyles.

The Green Machine.

Technically speaking, are reusable bags still reusable if you have no intention of ever using them again? It’s not that I don’t care about the environment. I’m trying to get better at it. I still don’t really know what goes in the recycling bin but I like whales. Whilst I do care about the environment, I care very little for shopping and that is probably where the issue lies.

I found myself in the supermarket, bagless again. It’s not that I don’t have bags, I have truck loads of bags, I just never have a bag when I’m caught in the shopping moment. In fairness, it’s not often that I have to do the supermarket shopping.

I worked out quite early on in my adulting that if I displayed a general ineptitude for things, it became much easier to astound people when the situation demanded it. I established my role in my marriage as the spender. Now when the spender is married to the saver and the manager of household economy, it becomes a very rare occurrence to be let loose on the weekly shop.

However, here I was alone and unsupervised. Bagless of course. I usually begin such expeditions by choosing something large and flat. Washing powder or a family pizza works well.

I then make every purchasing decision based on that item's suitability to be stacked on top. I’m not looking for Australian made or organic, mostly just for square stuff.

I take the whole no bag thing seriously. A slave to my art some might say.

The leaning tower of groceries is not achieved without sacrifice. I’ve bruised a lot of apples over the years, but they had no place in the tower.

Balancing the tower of groceries from the checkout to the car is fraught with danger. I’ve taken to leaving the back window of the car open, so I can just sort of hurl the groceries from five metres out.

Tricky if you have eggs, but thankfully I mostly just have washing powder and family pizzas.

We packed our bags, shoved them into the boot and piled into the car for the four hour road trip north.

As soon as we pulled out, Jade cranked up the only CD she’d decided to bring and Katy Perry sang us off.

We weren’t to know then that things were to go way off the rails and this would become the new family disaster story.

We were now two hours in, following my sister and her kids in their car. We converged and decided she’d take the boys and I’d have the girls. A bonding time with Aunties, a special happy time for our six kids to always remember.

Off we went behind them (with me now wanting to kill Katy Perry) when suddenly I clipped something. The engine started clunking and the bonnet smoking. (It turned out to be the edge of a flattened drum which whipped up under the bonnet, severing the fuel line.) My sister never saw any of this, because she had decided to be Peter Brock for the first time in her life.

We pulled over and jumped out. Jade said, 'Mum! There’s a fire under the car!' I crouched down saw petrol leaking out, saw the orange flames on the dry grass, grabbed both girls' hands and in that instant taught them exactly how not to act in an emergency and yelled 'SHIT! RUN!' We ran back down the empty country highway like lunatics before the car exploded, just like in the movies.

Suddenly several utes appeared and screeched to a halt. Some big, strong, rugged men jumped out and took charge, lifting the three of us to safety in the back tray of one ute, ringing 000, stopping traffic and diving through the flames to save our bags. If I wasn’t so upset I would’ve thought, 'Why on earth didn’t I make more effort when dressing this morning?'

By now our car was a complete inferno and, to my horror, so was the hill to our left. A bush fire had ignited big time and the paddock to our right contained 100 terrified mooing and stampeding cattle.

By the time the TV news helicopter had flown overhead and the ambulance and police arrived, the fire brigade had put out both the car and the hill and the farmers on horseback had almost regained control of their cattle.

By the looks on our six children’s faces (as my sister had now driven back), we’d surpassed all expectation of showing our kids a day they’d have no trouble remembering.

LW – What's the future plan? Selling or keeping?

Jeff – Definitely keeping. I love it and so does my 14 year old son, he has plans to drive it and possibly own it one day.

Make / Model – 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe Owner – Jeff Nothing says muscle like an early Mustang. They must be one of the world's most recognisable and wanted cars. Jeff is lucky enough to own a great example of this USA classic.

LW – So Jeff, how did you come about owning this classic piece of USA history?

Jeff – Back in 2012 I decided to shout myself a classic car, it had to be iconic and a V8. I was keen on an Aussie make but after doing my research I found that parts are hard to find and expensive when you find them. I was told a Mustang was the way to go. Due to their worldwide popularity there are heaps of parts and prices are very reasonable. I settled on this beauty as it was so well cared for and pretty much done up as I wanted it. I didn't have to do anything except drive it, that's the bit I love.

LW – Many owners name their cars, have you given it a name?

Jeff – No not exactly. My mates call it 'The Beast' on account of the sound it makes. I'm sure I'd be hassled by the cops in a modern car, but due to the vintage they tend to overlook it.

LW – The V8 rumble comes as part of the package. It must be great to get out on the open road. Do you drive The Beast much?

Jeff – Most weekends I like to get out in it. It has standard rego so I can go out whenever I like without restriction like they have on historic regoed cars. I can also do weddings and formals etc.

July had too many days with northerly wind component and August continued the trend. Just when we thought the spring from hell had descended we've switched back into a classic winter pattern with westerly winds and a swells from the south. At time of writing, a winter calibre low pressure system is dominating the lower Tasman sea with good to great surf at local point breaks. The calm winter has allowed an abundance of sand to build up along rocky headlands which has made even small days fun to ride.

One of the major developments in the surf over winter was the radical increase in crowding, primarily due to an influx of European and Brazilian surfers, many of whom are overseas students resident in Byron Bay or South-East Qld. Many or most of these surfers have very different ideas on etiquette compared to those who grew up in the Australian surfing culture. This has led to some ugly vibes in the water and to prevent the situation descending into all out chaos like Byron Bay or the Gold Coast is going to take a lot of concerted education. A quiet word, one hopes, can do wonders.

For those looking to make a deposit in the stoke account before the spring silly season begins, the short term looks to bring periodic S swell pulses with rapid northerly wind shifts in between. In other words, here one day, onshore the next.

If that bugs you and a kite seems like too much hard work or kit to drag around, the flathead are starting to wake from their winter slumber and move down river. Water temperature is a key factor, especially when northerly winds chill down ocean temps. In that case the bottom of the tide is often a degree or two warmer and that can bring lizards on the chew. Weedy, muddy bottoms although harder to fish often hold more fish than featureless sand flats. Current and bait are also key pieces of the puzzle. That should be the main fishing story through September, with the odd straggler tailor still around if you can find a good gutter or wash. All in all, having the wind at your back and a fresh feed of flathead in the bag is a nice way to waste a howling northerly afternoon in spring.

So, first things first. Don’t forget it’s tick season (yes, now!)

OK, now that that’s out of the way for a little while, I thought I would give a quick run down of what’s involved in preparation for basic elective surgery if your furry (or scaled or feathered) friend ever needs an operation.

First up, we always require our patients to have food and water withheld for about 12 hours prior to an anaesthetic.

Upon admission to hospital a patient is weighed, given a preliminary examination and sedated with an appropriate agent at least an hour before the procedure.

The patient will almost always be placed on an IV drip to maximise safety and post-operative comfort and recovery and support major organ function.

At the same time as sedation, an analgesic (pain relief) is usually given to minimise post-recovery discomfort.

Sometimes other medication may be given in special circumstances.

For middle-aged animals, or those with some degree of health compromise we will strongly recommend an in-house blood test to check on some basic biochemical and circulatory parameters.

For anaesthesia, an intravenous drug is used initially to induce rapid unconsciousness. Unconsciousness is achieved in only a few seconds, at which time the patient is immediately

intubated to keep airways open and protected and supply oxygen, eye lubrication is applied, and respiratory and oxygen monitors are attached. The patient is also placed on a heating mat to conserve body heat. Prior to surgery the patient will have its surgical site clipped, vacuumed, scrubbed and disinfected. Nearly all patients will be placed on an anaesthetic gas machine during the procedure.

While under anaesthesia and during recovery, patients are connected to devices that monitor heart rate and rhythm, arterial oxygen saturation, blood pressure, expired carbon dioxide levels, core-temperature and respiratory rate. They are kept warm on a thermostatically controlled recirculating hot water pad.

During this time, and in recovery, the patient is monitored by one or two nurses, as well as the surgeon.

Once the surgery is over, the patient is transferred to a warm cage to rest quietly. At this time the endotracheal tube is usually removed, depending on the return of the patient's normal swallowing and respiratory reflexes. In some circumstances the patient may remain on IV fluids for some time after surgery. Further pain relief is given at this time.

So if you wonder what all the fuss is about next time your pet undergoes a surgical procedure, keep in mind that it's a complex process that aims to produce a good surgical result, but also maintain maximum safety and patient comfort even in what might be considered ‘routine' procedures.

So hopefully that sheds a little light on the situation!

Dog Of The Month

Our little Jack Russell has an issue with digging. We used to have a beautiful garden with great lawn – it’s all been dug up! What can we do to stop this behaviour?

Luke F Hi Luke, Digging is one of those normal dog behaviours that drives us all nuts – especially as it creates such a mess! So here’s a few tips that might help with that digging behaviour.

1. Make sure that all of your dog’s needs are being met. Are they getting enough exercise? Are you spending enough time with them? Are they getting out and about, and investigating the world around them? Pent up energy, boredom, frustration and a lack of other things to keep them occupied can often result in undesirable behaviours like digging – so rule that out first.

2. As well as boredom, dogs can dig for a variety of other reasons: to keep themselves cool (by lying in the cool soil they’ve just exposed), to get to lawn grub or other critters in the grass, to bury food or other items, because of breed tendencies, or simply because they love the activity.

Determining why your dog is digging, can help to determine what to do about it. A dog trainer or canine behaviour specialist can help you get to the bottom of why if you aren’t sure.

3. If the reason is to keep cool – try providing them with an alternative cool spot, especially during summer. If it is to get to the lawn grubs you have living in your lawn – treat those to get rid of them. If it’s to bury food – perhaps look at feeding smaller meals more frequently, or provide smaller bones that can be eaten in one sitting, rather than being buried for later.

4. If the reason is because of breed tendencies, or because they simply love it (tick both boxes with a Jack Russell!), then providing them with an area that they are allowed to dig in can help to channel the behaviour in a more appropriate direction.

You can create a digging area with a kid’s clam shell and some sand, hiding small morsels of food or a bone in it – so that the area where you want them to dig provides them with some buried treasure to find. Providing them with a digging area often works well to give an outlet to the behaviour, and saves your garden in the process.

Paul Crozier Is Mr September Construction Coordinator, Ballina Shire Council and retiring Trojans full back Birthplace: Taree Family: wife Shandell, two sons Jack (5) and Xavier (1) Star Sign: Libra Favourite Food: Chicken noodle soup, Asian style Footy has always been a huge part of Paul Crozier's life. His father played league and union, and little Paul virtually grew up on the field. Following in Dad's footsteps, he started playing union when he was just a youngster.

When he moved to Lennox Head from Newcastle in 2009, it was one of the first things Paul did—get in touch with the Trojans and try to get a place on the local side. It seems that wasn't much of a problem, with Paul's full back skills being greatly appreciated by the team.

It was the beginning of a nine-season career with the Trojans, during which time Paul played in four grand finals, three of those were winning sides. He was also awarded Player of the Year twice.

No doubt the team will miss him but he says, 'You get to the point when your body just doesn't quite bounce back like it used to. Plus I've got two little boys and I want to spend my weekends with them and my wife.'

More than likely that will still involve footy of some kind.

'They are going to start off playing soccer for a while. To be honest I don't really care what form of football they play, just as long as they play something.

'Football is a great life educator and if you play footy you make mates for life.'

Paul admits that his boys will probably play union too, and that he personally wants to continue some kind of relationship with his beloved local team, whether that be in a coaching or other kind of support role.

'I definitely want to maintain some kind of involvement with

the Trojans,' he says.

During the week, Paul uses the Civil Engineering degree he earned at Newcastle University in his role with Ballina Shire Council as Construction Coordinator. He coordinates teams that work on roads, roundabouts and pathways.

Prior to that he worked for LendLease on the St Helena tunnel, a job that certainly had its rewards.

'I got to sit up there on St Helena hill and look out over Byron Bay for a couple of months, so that wasn't bad,' he says.

What's the best thing about your job? I enjoy the challenge of working things out, planning jobs, managing people. And I work with a great crew.

Worst thing? Sometimes the 6.30 starts can be a bit hard.

Hobbies? Footy, touch, cricket, hanging out with my family.

Work / Life philosophy? Don't get bitter, get better.

Kirsty Nixon Is Ms September Owner Nixon Bulk Foods Birthplace: Sydney Family: Husband Jason, children Jordan (14) and Ebony (12) Favourite Food: Greek Star Sign: Aries Although Kirsty Nixon started life in Sydney, her family moved to Lennox Head when she was a teenager and she finished school at Ballina High.

Her parents were entrepreneurial people, and from a young age Kirsty learned the ropes of hospitality, working the floors and the kitchens of several of her parents’ local cafes and restaurants.

In the mid-80s her father owned the Bream Hole fish and chip shop, then he opened the Blue Café which was where the Indian Curry Hub is today. He also opened Sullivans restaurant which was in the Resort where the Chinese is today, and finally, when Kirsty was in her late teens, her Dad bought the Shaws Bay Hotel.

‘I remember being 17 and not allowed to work at the pub. I just couldn’t wait to turn 18 so I could work behind the bar,’ she says.

‘I worked for Dad in all of his businesses over the years, so he did have a big influence on what I decided to do later in life.’

Kirsty’s first real job was at Woolies in River Street, but in 1994 she decided to get out of the Northern Rivers and moved to Darwin where she lived for about 18 months and worked in a pub.

‘I had lots of fun up there,’ she says. ‘In fact I had to come home to slow down a bit! Great memories though.’

Not long after she returned she met husband Jason, who had just retired from the army. The couple travelled overseas together a couple of times before settling down and starting their family.

Kirsty managed the canteen at Wollongbar TAFE for some time before the couple bought Jordans Farm in 2011.

Kirsty says the Nixons' journey has been fascinating, because she’s had to educate herself on a whole new range of products, and familiarise herself with growing trends in organic produce.

‘We try to get local, or Australian if possible, and as much organic produce as we can,’ she says. ‘Of course we stock gluten free, dairy free produce where appropriate, and we encourage people to re-use containers. We are a bulk food store, so we have recycled glass bottles and jars and encourage people to bring their glass containers back to be re-used. We produce very little plastic or packaging, which is something we are proud of in today’s environment.’

‘We’ve just got in an all natural washing powder, which I’m going to take home and trial myself this weekend.’

What’s the best thing about your job? Being able to supply people with healthy food, and meeting so many different people – and just generally being social. I like that.

It always seemed like a perfect purchase because Kirsty and Jason, just like the owners who had started the business, had a son called Jordan.

Worst thing? It is frustrating when I don’t know about an obscure product, but at least I get to research it and learn about it, so that I can help the next person.

In 2014 they set up a second business in Lennox Head.

Nixons Bulk Foods was Jason’s idea, although he stays mainly behind the scenes these days. They sold Jordans in 2016.

Work life philosophy? Life’s too short!

Hobbies? Spending time with my family, walking, travelling, going out with my girlfriends.

Xavier Catholic College Term three is off and racing as our Year 12 students complete their Trial HSC examinations. Many students who have studied subjects such as Drama, Dance, Art, Music have also sat the practical component of their subject and many students completing projects in Art, Design and Technology, Industrial Technology (Multimedia/Timber), Textiles and Design are working steadily to meet deadlines.

It has also been busy in the sporting arena. The Diocesan Athletics Carnival, held in Coffs Harbour, saw the largest team participate with over 60 students representing the College.

Students took part in the NSW Netball cup with the Year 7/8 Team winners of the Regional Final in Casino. They will now compete in the NSW Final in Sydney. The Year 9/10 Team were runners up. In the NRCC Netball competition the Under 16s team were also victorious. Both they and the Year 7 Team ended the competition undefeated.

Our Year 10 students have been lucky to have attended a number of highly informative presentations in the lead up to choosing electives, among them a Careers Day in Lismore. They have also had the opportunity to participate in a number of Well Being workshops which will culminate in a retreat experience, giving them time to reflect on their lives and to set themselves direction for the future.

Leo Club has been busy organising the annual Children of Courage Awards as well as coordinating some in-school community building activities. In conjunction with Lion Helen and Lion Paul, the Leo Club facilitated a Maori –sticks game during pastoral care. This was first with their peers in the Year 12 cohort who then worked with their corresponding House in Year 7. Year 7 have also made good luck cards to pass on to Year 12 as they begin their HSC Trial Examination.

The Concert Band have been busy

performing at the opening of the new buildings at Crowley Retirement Village.

Students in the bands and choir are preparing repertoire for the Lismore Eisteddfod and other community performances later in the term.

With the Writers Festival, English and Mathematics competition, STEM activities, the Chess Club and Environment Group there is plenty for students of all ages and interests.

Lennox Head Community Preschool Can you believe we are halfway through Term 3 already! We have been busy bees at preschool as usual.

Firstly we would like to welcome the new families who have enrolled for 2019.

We are excited to be creating relationships with new families and enhancing our current relationships with younger siblings and children returning in 2019. The enrolments for 2019 have been finalized and we are yet again full. Those families who missed out, don’t worry. You will remain on the list for consideration in 2020 and beyond. We thank everyone for their patience in this matter. Hopefully in the near future we will be able to enroll the majority of families and children with a second location and a much needed additional community preschool within our expanding area.

Term 3 is jam packed with adventures, including, a visit from the Gigalees in week 5; a visit to Dr Angus Lambie at Lennox Dental in weeks 8 and 9 and a visit to Lennox Head Butchery and Deli in the final week of the term. Angus and Trevor help us to round up our exploration of how our body works and how to keep it healthy. Watch this space for photos and a story about our adventure.

The Gigalees, yet again, provided lots of laughs and giggles throughout their show. Following on from this show the children have been taking on the role of the clowns in the playground. They paint their faces, put on their dress-ups and perform tricks, sing songs and explore their juggling skills on the stage for the audiences. After some discussions, it became evident that many of our children hadn’t seen clowns before and not surprisingly were quite impressed. Thank you to

It is coming to the time of the year in which there is a lot of talk around our children about changes which are to come.

This may be transitioning to school or transitioning into preschool etc. Transitions can be an exciting time, as well as a scary time for our children. This can also be very hard to articulate for children as they may not understand or know what they are worried about. To support our children who may be experiencing some concerns, watch for behavior changes and be open to discuss their concerns. There are some fantastic resources on the Kids Matter website. Ballina Coast High School At Ballina Coast High School (BCHS) we have worked with partner primary schools to embed the essential employability skills in our students.

These skills include team work, time management, positive attitude, problem solving and resilience. We encourage our students to ask questions, find solutions, work collaboratively and communicate in different ways.

Year 8 have researched, surveyed, investigated, drafted and made unique toys. They have marketed these and communicated their ideas to panels.

In 2018 we have a Social Justice group that is looking at supporting farmers. We have students involved in Youth Frontiers, Leo Club, Student Representative Council and Duke of Edinburgh connecting us to the community.

Students talk about their learning as a muscle that they are exercising. At BCHS we are providing a rich and diverse curriculum to allow more opportunities for students to be successful.

As the new school grows, so do our staff and students as they share a common goal to continually learn and improve. They are learning in and out of the classroom. They are taking every opportunity to engage in learning and extra curricula activities. We have had amazing traditional Japanese drumming workshops, inspirational learning conferences, academically challenging Trial HSC exams and huge success in all sports. The BCHS students were the champion school at the recent North Coast Zone Athletics Carnival. We have a variety of traineeships growing and increasing daily.

Our students are successful because they have a great community surrounding them – family, staff and friends. It is an exciting time for educators and students as everyday sees new activities and activities contributing to the teaching and learning. Lennox Head Public School NAIDOC week celebrations Local high school girls from Ballina Coast High treated us to a traditional Aboriginal dance performance to start off our celebrations. It was very engaging with all students mesmerized by the dancers. Students also completed educational rotation activities throughout the day including bush tucker information and tree planting, traditional aboriginal games, dot painting and literacy through art work. It was a very informative, fun and enjoyable day.

by Maddie and Leura 2018 Book Parade In a far, far away land‌ the students of Lennox Head Public School celebrate book week in a magical way, the book parade. This yearly tradition allows students to choose their favourite book and dress up as a character, making a costume, and putting their crafting skills to the test. In the past there have been some pretty epic costumes, including Thing 1 and Thing 2, Thelma the unicorn and so many more. All this hard work pays off as the students show off their creations at the parade. Each year there is a special guest who hosts our event and students are kept guessing who it might be. In the past we have been lucky enough to have Hermione and the marvellous Snow White herself.

This year we had Princess Leia. All the students enjoy the day and the fun that comes with dressing up as their favourite book character.

100 days of School Time flies when you are having fun.

Celebrations have continued for the start of term three with kindergarten students celebrating their first 100 days of school.

This time of celebration included a teddy bears' picnic, rotation activities, dress ups by the kinder teachers and students, including wearing crowns, to show how much smarter they are after being at school for 100 days. Time is certainly flying by and it won’t be long before these students will be in year one.

Holy Family Catholic Primary School Mufti Day for Bale Out Appeal On Thursday, 2nd August, Holy Family School Community at Skennars Head stood in solidarity with struggling farmers and their families affected by drought in the Diocese of Armidale.

Each student and staff member donated money to wear either Aussie colours of green and gold or dress as a farmer.

From this fundraising event, we raised just over $2,000 for the Bale Out Appeal.

The generosity from students, families and staff was wonderful in wanting to lend a helping hand to our fellow Australians doing it tough.

LeBa Wrap The August Senior LeBa round was held in powerful and challenging conditions next to the wall at North Wall, Ballina.

In the Cadets Dembe Ryan looks on track to do well at the Australian Titles this year edging out Harry O'Brien in the final, whilst in the Juniors Jack O'Brien went one better than his brother getting the nod over Rino Lindsay in a hard fought final. In the Seniors Odin Green got his second win of the year scraping past Adam Molloy, and in the Masters Dustin Hollick found time for his first comp of the year and ended up taking it out over Michael Crisp. In the Legends Tony O'Brien notched up his second win of the year getting past Peter McBurney.

In the Opens a late afternoon onshore wind caused ideal conditions for the surfers to take to the air, and in the thrilling final Mikey McDonagh ended up with the two best airs of the comp just getting on top of Adam Melling, Jack Murray and James Wood.

In the Junior Leba Round Mia Baker won the Fleas in front of Ethan Crisp and Tao Harper. In the Micros Josie Morison took it out over Barlin Molloy and in the Grommets Max McGilvray took 1st place with Keenan Crisp grabbing 2nd. In the Junior Groms Juniper Harper was able to score her first win of the year with Poppy Morison and Ocea Curtis making it an all girl podium finish.

Lennox Longboarders Classic

Held on the weekend of 4 and 5 August, the Longboard Classic welcomed 100 competitors from eight age and gender divisions. Sunday was particularly good surfing and it got better with the incoming tide.

Stand out surfing rounds for Sunday were the Old Mal/Loggers semi-final on Sunday morning, with some real old style log riding in improving surf and nose riding displays to wow the crowd.

The Open 9 ft Final was as good as any longboard final with the eventual winner, Scott Channon of Lennox Head, winning for the second year in a row. And in the Ladies, Eleanor Robertson of Lennox Head repeating her ongoing performances of 2017.

Sponsorship was appreciated from all the local businesses.

Mobile Plumbing Services Lennox was the main sponsor, with great support also from Ripcurl Ballina, Inner Beauty Lennox, Lennox Surf, Herron Todd & White, Lennox Hotel, Stone & Wood and Sideways Surf now supporting the Classic this Year.

Rainbow Region Regatta Results Rainbow Region Dragon Boat Club’s (RRDBC) August regatta at Shaws Bay has become the regatta to launch the 2018/19 dragon boat season, for northern NSW & southern Qld. Eighteen clubs, from Camden Haven NSW to Redcliffe QLD, made up 15 sports teams and after their winter regatta hiatus, they were measuring themselves up against each other. The winner results (below) belie how well regional NSW did.

The Shaws Bay course started out in brilliant conditions on Saturday.

However, by Sunday afternoon the south westerly winds played havoc with the races. It was so precarious, cancelling a final was seriously considered for paddler safety reasons. Despite the conditions the full regatta program was completed.

Meanwhile, the ever popular Community Teams competition was held early and

Becoming a nipper is a great way to get confident in the water, as well as to make new friends, learn new skills, compete for your club and to get amongst it during the summer months.

Sign on will take place on Sunday, 9 and 16 September from 9am to midday at Lennox Head Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club, Pacific Parade, Lennox Head.

Nippers season kicks off on Sunday, 7 October 2018, and goes through until April 2019. Enduro and Hydrothon mega weekend The flagship Lennox Head Enduro will be held at Lennox Surf Club on Saturday, 22 September from 8.30am, and will be followed on Sunday, 23 September from 9am-2pm by the Hydrothon All Female Surf Sports Clinic for girls aged 10-15 years.

The Enduro event is open to competitors from ages U11 through to U17, and includes swim, board and run legs.

Distances increase with age, with U11 competitors required to swim 400m, board paddle 1km and run for 1km; whereas U17s are required to swim 1km, board paddle 3km and run 3km.

The Enduro entry fee is $49, and online entries close 20 September. Late entries will be accepted in person at the club house on 21 September and early on 22 September. Cricket Club Sign On The Pirates are preparing for the 201819 cricket season.

New and old members are invited to attend the sign on muster day. Nets will be available for pre-season training for those keen.

Junior age teams range from under 6s to under 17s. LHCC fields teams in all senior grades including 1st grade who play in the Far North Coast regional competition.
