MAPPING THE SITE

centenary square is located in the heart of parramatta. framed by parramatta river and the parramatta train station, transportation is the lifeblood of the city.

due to the proximity of the train and bus stations, many commuters pass through centenary square on their way to public transport.

movement through the site lenny ellis. folio. bas one-ten and one-fifteen. spring. twenty-fifteen.

pedestrians tend to move in clumps through the site because they have to wait on the traffic lights to cross , and then stay together because the majority will simply cut across the square and continue on to their destination.

the southwest corner stays pretty vacant through the weekdays unless there is a special event like the farmers coop every friday, then temporary entertainment like oversized chess or ping pong tables are set up here. this is an ideal location for my resting and performance spaces.

parramatta was established on the banks of the river and the parramatta river is still the most relevant icon of the city today. this water feature is the centenary square fountain. located in the heart of parramatta, it is a place where the people of parramatta gather socially and share culturally.

there is a sense of light and safety near the fountain. even at night as the memorial fountain clock seems to stand guard while children and adults continue to play in the glowing pastel water, safely into the night.

this is a bus station a bit closer to home. it has always caught my interest for its simple complexity. as you can see in these diagrams, the posts that hold this roof and gutter system taper in opposing dimensions. this is by far my favourite bus stop in the whole city.

RESTING SPACE

this section displays the disjoin between the fulcrum of the seat support and the backrest. there is also an allowance in the back to park prams and set shoes in preparation for a bit of water play.

these two scenes depict a time passed leisurely as the clock ticks by, in contrast with today’s environment, where stillness is rare, and time and movement are a blur of motion. all the while, longing for genuine connection with one another. these elevations show the use of the space from the front, the back and both sides.

I’ve modelled this resting space with an unbalanced fulcrum to highlight an imbalance that still pervades society today - even as the differences that separate us are like varying shades of the same colour (as depicted in the blur of threads just overhead). the thread blur tribute is also a soft link to the women’s factories, one of which resided in parramatta as a linen manufacturing plant. women convicts were generally mistreated, and the linen factory was meant to be a protection as well as an opportunity to contribute. in practice, it was yet another veiled mistreatment of the female inmate population in parramatta.

PERFORMANCE SPACE

as transportation is such a driving force at the heart of parramatta’s history, I took inspiration from the many modes of transport available for the pathway to the multimedia performance lab. f ro m l e f t t o r i g h t , m o t o r w a y, waterway, and railway are the three most prominent modes of transport in parramatta.

northern aspect - section

at the terminus of the transportation pathway, you are brought swirling into an intimate space for a private, live or multimedia performance. as it is said, that all roads lead to the city, so then do all roads lead to this creative oasis. two sections demonstrate how the space works i n t e r n a l l y, f r o m t h e nor ther n and easter n aspects.

located adjacent to the historic st james anglican church, these elevations depict the southern and eastern aspects of the multimedia performance lab. the curves and gentle turns of the design are a distinct contradiction to the pointy angles and hard edges of the historic structures that surround.

example of a performance in the multimedia projected performance lab kaki king is a fabulous female guitarist, multimedia pioneer and innovator. she has taken performance to the next level with her multimedia performances. incorporating light and projection mapping on her guitar and behind the stage, as she shows off her musical prowess with one handed melodies, or as she simultaneously drums or scratches the guitar body to produce a cacophony of sound.
