DESIGN BRIEF As a tourist resort, transportation and public space are critical to Circular Quay, Sydney. However, With the rapid social and economic advancement, a growing urban population has increased demand for public spaces and transports, which are not always well balanced. The project aim to rethink the relationship between buildings and transports in Circular Quay, thereby dealing with the problem of uncoordinated development. Connecting and activating surrounding public spaces effectively by reorganising the traffic. The project provides a probability for further development of Circular Quay. Rebuilding the existing bus lane which is on Alfred Street and integrating the bus terminal into the site to release a new public space to the north, improving a sense of link between the city and water. On the other hand, two linking spaces in the building was created to response to the architectural environment. The ground floor is the key transit space, including transit hub, bus terminal, pedestrian platform, connecting bridge. All of these contribute to integrating transit and public space. Moreover, moving to the sky, the sky lobby can be seen as the ‘second ground floor’ to connect AMP Capital Tower, which also plays a vital role in vertical and horizontal linkage.

ABOUT PUBLIC SPACE In terms of relationship between highrise and public space, starting from the general layout (the building makes the most of the area of site, accompanying a small vacant lot), and then public space gradually erodes the ground floor area. Finally, the building will be cut into two part and achieve vertical movement.

MANIFESTO ABOUT SURROUDING TRANSPORT Based on the research, bus stops and taxi ranks have brought great pressure on traffic around the ‘AMP’ site, separating the site and public spaces. Particularly, the bus terminal cuts any sense of links between the water and the city. Thus, integrating the bus terminal into the site is the initial idea to solve this issue.

ABOUT THE BUILDING - 'SKY BRIDGE' ‘Sky bridge‘ is able to transform from Top-down development to Bottom-up development, which is beneficial to human activities and circulation in modern society.

TWO LINKING SPACES KEY SPACE 1: Ground Floor - Transit Hub The ground floor and lower floors is the key transit space, including transit hub, bus terminal, pedestrian platform, conncting bridge. All of these contribute to integrating transit and public space. KEY SPACE 2: 'Second Ground Floor' - Sky Lobby & Bridge Moving to the sky, the transfer floors in the middle level would be a sky lobby, whcih can also be seen as the 'second ground floor' to connect the AMP tower. It plays a vital role in vertical and horizontal linkage. 13

FUNCTION

"Samsara" is one of the Buddhism thoughts. Bamboo was planted around the community hub, which was connected by a corridor. Bamboo in forest represents new life and processed bamboo used in the construction represents extension of the life, just like continuous circle of life, which identifies with "Samsara". A corridor is designed to connect community centre and bamboo forest, so that people are able to go through the bamboo forest and experience life. I hope they will form their own thoughts to respect the bamboo, respect the material and respect the nature in this bamboo environment.
