2012 Citizen of the Year “Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary events.” . . . Anonymous Nancy O. Koski is a life-long resident of Leominster. The daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Sulo S. Koski. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Sciences from Worcester State University and an Associates Degree in Medical Assistance from Becker Junior College. Seems like I have always been a volunteer in some way, shape or form since I can remember. Looking back at the year 2000, I believe, that is the year my whole life changed. Dealing with some adversities, as we all do, trying to turn a negative into a positive, I began opening my heart to new avenues. I volunteered at the Salvation Army in Milford, whose program had helped a very close friend of mine who perished in a fire in Upton, Massachusetts. I have volunteered at numerous political events as well as many church functions. I joined the Fitchburg Knights & 16
Ladies of Kaleva as a member and soon became a member of the Board of Directors. As my duties of outreach volunteer emerged, I initiated a holiday nursing home program as well as outreach programs for local veterans. Most recently, in the year 2010, I founded an organization entitled “Leominster Has Heart”. On Valentines Day that year we honored the Leominster Police Department, the Leominster Fire Department and the Leominster Department of Public Works for their unselfish service to our community. In December 2011 I was appointed to the Leominster Office of Emergency Management (OEM) after experiencing, first-hand, the awesome services provided to City of Leominster residents. I now serve in the Sheltering/Administration Unit. I am also a member of The Friends of the Leominster Public Library. I love the solace our New England beaches provide as well as antiquing, gardening and, oh yes, my love of Colorado! Volunteerism is a way to open your heart for a cause you are passionate about. I humbly accept your award on behalf of every volunteer here in Leominster. I am honored to have just been nominated with my peers. If you love people as I do, I encourage you to act on your impulses. The tremendous amount of gratitude you receive cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Knock down those stumbling blocks and build stepping stones. “If I have made a difference in one person’s life, my life will have been fulfilled”. . . .

Also hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in Maine.
Richard “Dick” Fontaine 2012 Citizen of the Year
Richard was born in Leominster in 1936 and is the son of Henry and Marion Fontaine. He attended Leominster Trade School and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1957. Richard attended Barber School when he returned from overseas and opened “Dick’s Barbershop” in 1959. Dick has a reputation for opening his barber shop as early as 1:00 AM! In 1959 he married Nancy Holmes and had two children Patricia and Michael. Four grandchildren: Stephanie, Michael, Sarah & Emily and one great-grandchild, Isabella. Dick is a life member of the Leominster Sportsmen’s Association and a longtime member of the Leominster Elks and Eagles Club. Community Involvement: • Dick has a kind heart and has touched the lives of so many people in the Leominster Community. • Dick sponsored one of the original Street Hockey Teams (Dick’s Clippers) in Leominster, in addition to sponsoring a basketball team for nearly 20 years. • Dick has been a very active fundraiser for the past 40 years. 18
