Properties of Katharine and James Campbell Collection, Queensland

lots 1 – 16

The pieces were mostly acquired during the period 2002-2006 while living in Beijing, where Katharine was posted as a diplomat at the Australian Embassy. Her husband James was a keen admirer and collector of qingbai wares from the Song dynasty, in particular, developing a broad interest in Chinese arts and crafts from ancient to modern times. The couple regularly looked for pieces at well known antique markets across Beijing, developing good relationships with many antique store owners, and further afield when their travels took them to many provinces across China.

This vase has a square mouth and a tightened waist, shaped like a bottle-gourd but has squarish sides. The main theme of "Eight Musical Instruments" are painted with underglaze blue accompanied by flower sprays. The blank spaces are filled with overglaze red enamel over a secondary firing at a lower temperature. The very bright underglaze blue contrasts with the deep red overglaze enamel to produce an exquisite polarity bringing forth a riveting ancient look. The base has a six-character regular script mark of "made in the Great Ming’s Longqing reign" in underglaze blue. This is indeed a fine piece of work from the Longqing period.

The "Eight Musical Instruments" (Bayin in Chinese) were well recorded in the book Sanzijing by the Song dynasty writer Wang Yingling. It stated that the pao (pottery gourds), tu (clay), ge (hide), mu (wood), shi (stone), jin (metal), si (silk) and zhu (bamboo) produce the eight sounds (Bayin). These sounds are typically represented by the musical instruments of zhong, qing, qin, xiao, sheng, xun, gu and zhu. The early Ming Emperor Taizu established strict music and musical instruments to be performed at the very solemn imperial temples and ritual festivities. Subsequent emperors also followed in establishing ritual and solemn regal music to be performed during their reigns. The Jiajing reign (1522-1566) had established the most imperial ritual music. This was followed by Emperor Longqing (reigned 1567-1572). The Longqing period porcelains with the theme painting of the "Eight Musical Instruments" showed the emperor’s devotion to ritual imperial music.

The Longqing period was only a short reign of six years. It was however a tumultuous six-year period including a great flood which had severely affected the production in Jingdezhen. Production of porcelain plummeted as a result. As such, it is usually quite rare to find porcelain vessels made in the Longqing period. However, Geng Baochang’s renowned book Ming and Qing Porcelain on Inspection stated that:"It is not as recorded in most literature and reports that ‘there are no porcelain vessels of the Longqing period’. From some extant relics, it could be seen that the two types of porcelain, the wucai and the blue and white both achieved a very remarkable high skill in the three reigns of Jiajing, Longqing and Wanli. These two are head and shoulders above the rest of the other porcelain." The current squarish bottle-gourd vase is quite unique and innovative with a very light and taut body. The underglaze blue has a tinge of purple while the red ground color is pure and intense emanating an ancient elegance. This vase is still in an impeccable condition. Vessels of similar design and painting had not been found so far after careful scrutiny of published details from various Chinese and overseas museums. This vase seems to be the only extant vessel of its kind from the Longqing period.

A RARE AND FINE CHINESE INK ENAMELED ‘DRAGON’ PROCELAIN PLAQUE AND HUANGHUALI TABLE SCREEN, TANG YING SEAL MARK, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

The porcelain plaque features a vigorous dragon painted in monochromatic ink, exhaling water, with swirling clouds emanating from its movements. The dragon’s coiling body weaves through the clouds, with its powerful claws and dynamic expression capturing a sense of vitality. The meticulous painting style conveys grandeur and an ethereal presence, evoking classical Chinese poetic imagery of dragons soaring through cosmic realms.

In the bottom right corner of the plaque are two red seals, “Tao” and “Zhu” seals frequently used by Tang Ying, a prominent imperial porcelain craftsman of the Qing dynasty. Tang Ying regarded this seal as symbolic of his craft, with its meaning rooted in ancient texts, signifying transformation and mastery.

Tang Ying, an admirer of dragon imagery, often illustrated ink dragons and penned poetry that complemented his pieces. His poem collection, Tao Ren Xin Yu, includes several dragon-themed poems. One such poem appears on an ink-painted dragon brush pot held by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, capturing a majestic image of a dragon resonant with Chen Rong’s Song-dynasty ink dragon paintings. This artistry reflects Tang Ying’s deep admiration for the dragon motif and his sophisticated, expressive approach to porcelain painting.

This seven-character quatrain about the ink dragon is also inscribed on a celestial vase with the Tao Jun mark by Tang Ying, formerly held by the China National Arts and Crafts Import and Export Corporation. Both this piece and the museum collection mentioned are available for reference. Inkstone screens were especially popular during the Qianlong period, prized as refined scholarly desk items. This piece combines the artistry of ceramics and painting, embodying the elegance of Song dynasty aesthetics and exuding a refined scholarly charm. It parallels the ink-painted dragon brush pot and the ink dragon celestial vase, displaying a unique artistry distinctive to Tang Ying¡¯s craft. As a sophisticated desk piece crafted by Tang Ying himself, it serves as a rare testament to his years in porcelain production, enhancing its value as a collector’s item.

The basin overflows with various symbols of prosperity and good fortune, emanating radiant light. Above it, a prominent “Chun” (Spring) character is depicted, its interior featuring a floral brocade pattern with a central round cartouche. Within this cartouche, a Shouxing (God of Longevity) figure is

The Chun character and treasure motifs are traditional symbols of good fortune in ancient Chinese imperial culture, frequently featured on various artifacts. This piece employs the classic carved lacquer technique, showcasing rich and solid lacquer application, masterful carving precision, and smooth, expressive lines. The overall composition is perfectly balanced, presenting the design in its finest form, epitomizing the exquisite craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the time.

The vase is supported by three equidistant gilded copper goat figures, crafted with remarkable lifelikeness, symbolizing the traditional concept of Sanyang Kaitai (Three Goats Heralding Prosperity).

The word “goat” (yang) is a homophone for “sun” (yang), with the three goats representing the rising sun, midday sun, and setting sun—each symbolizing vibrant vitality. The rising sun signifies illumination and radiant clarity; the midday sun represents fullness and brilliance; and the setting sun embodies a golden glow and majestic beauty. Additionally, “goat” (yang) is also associated with “auspiciousness” (xiang).

The robe is worked entirely in couched gold threads with nine writhing five-clawed dragons confronting flaming pearls amidst ruyi-form clouds interspersed with bats and the bajixiang, all reserved on a blue ground above auspicious emblems rising from the terrestrial diagram and lishui stripe at the hen; with midnight-blue cuffs and collar decorated with further dragons and clouds.

The use of the blue colour was associated with the Temple of Heaven, south of the palace, where the Emperor offered sacrifice at the winter solstice and also prayed for rain during the summer months. The dragon robes (long pao) ‘are mostly blue, but brown, turquoise, orange, yellow and red ones do exist and were predominantly worn by men. ... The salient features are the hem design of stripes representing water with turbulent waves above, repeated on the sleeves at elbow level, and mountain peaks rising from the water, with symmetrically-placed dragons among clouds covering the main body of the garment.’ (V. Wilson, Chinese Dress, London, 1986, p.12).

AN EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE CHINESE MOULDED LONGQUAN CELADON XINIU AND MOON DISH, YUAN DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY

The thickly potted shallow dish crisply moulded with sixteen bracket lobes along the edge of the flattened mouth rim, each lobe framing a pair of florets, the interior centre moulded with a scene of a recumbent mythical creature with a single horn and pinions at its shoulders and haunches, its head turned to face the crescent moon, the cavetto moulded with a scroll of blossoming chrysanthemums, covered overall with a pale green celadon glaze. With a fitted box.

A closely related Longquan celadon dish with this rare design is held in the Art Institute of Chicago, part of the Lucy Maud Buckingham Collection. It is illustrated in Chinese Art Under the Mongols: The Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) by Lee and Ho (Cleveland, 1968, no. 68). The same dish is also featured in Ice and Green Clouds: Traditions of Chinese Celadon by Mino and Tsiang (Indianapolis, 1986, no. 86, pp. 210¨C211). Another example of this design can be found in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and is referenced in He’s Chinese Ceramics: The New Standard Guide (London, 1996, no. 509, p. 246).

For a closely comparable example, see J.J. Lally & Co., Chinese Ceramics A.D. 400¨C1400: Selections from an American Collection, March 19¨C31, 2007, no. 24. Additionally, refer to another almost identical dish in Christie’s New York sale on 18/9/2003, lot 287.

The motif of a xiniu gazing at the moon first appeared during the Song dynasty and remained popular through the 13th and 14th centuries. This design was commonly featured on Dingyao and Yaozhou ceramics, as well as textiles and other forms of Chinese decorative arts. The theme is thoroughly discussed in Wirgin¡¯s article, Sung Ceramic Designs (Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, no. 42, Stockholm, 1970, pp. 196-198).

According to Wirgin, the term xiniu originally referred to the rhinoceros in ancient Chinese texts. However, as rhinoceroses became extinct in postarchaic periods, the xiniu evolved into a legendary creature, known primarily through literary references. The depiction of a xiniu gazing at a crescent moon in Song and Yuan ceramics illustrates the myth that its unique crescent-shaped horn allowed it to “communicate with the sky.”

This belief in the magical properties of the rhinoceros horn gained prominence during the Song dynasty and continued into later periods. Rhinoceros horn was attributed with supernatural and medicinal qualities, and was even believed to possess aphrodisiac properties. These attributed powers led to the creation of intricately carved rhinoceros horn bowls and cups, a distinctive category of Chinese decorative art that flourished during the late Ming and Qing dynasties.

A RARE AND FINE CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADON-GLAZED LOBED INCENSE BURNER, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (11271279)

The lobed body supported on three slightly splayed legs, the shoulder with a horizontal rib intersecting vertical flanges associated with the mouth rim stimulating the form of a blooming mallow, rising to a short neck and an everted rim, applied throughout with an unctuous sea-green glaze thinning to a pale green at the ridges, the bottom of each leg left unglazed revealing the pale ware burnt russet-orange in the firing. With a Japanese mother-of-pearl inlaid red lacquer rounded inner box and a red lacquer square outer box.

The present incense burner, elegantly modelled with an undulating mouth rim to simulate the form of a blooming mallow, is highly unusual. Mallow shape is not uncommon on bowls and dishes, but it is extremely rare to find it on an incense burner. The exquisite bluish-green kinuta glaze as seen on the present vessel was particularly valued in Japan, where the incense ceremony kodo plays a highly important role.

The vase is finely potted with a long cylindrical neck rising from a pronounced flange above the shoulder. The body is covered overall with a soft green glaze stopping just above the foot rim. It’s with two Japanese wooden boxes.

The front side of the cover of the outer box inscribed: “Tsuba mouth flower vase of Song dynasty Guan ware by Konan” with a red seal of the Yonayama. The other side of the cover inscribed:” Master piece of Xiu nei si celadon ware, 29th of Jan., 33th year of Shouwa (1958)”. with two red seals of Yonayama.

The front side of the inner box cover is inscribed: ‘Flower Vase of Song Guan Ware Celadon.’ On the underside, it reads: ‘The vase has an elegant form and an exceptional bluish tone. Compared to ordinary Longquan ware, the difference is as that between a servant visiting a lady of high standing. Absolutely a very rare piece of the works of art. Konan is the pseudonym of Yasuo Yonayama, who served as the Japanese ambassador in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, before World War II. He is renowned for discovering the Jiaotan Guan Kiln and conducting research on Song dynasty Guan ware, which he later published in Japan.

Nobumori Ozaki (1880-1966) was a distinguished Japanese scholar specializing in Chinese ceramics. Renowned for his expertise, Ozaki contributed extensively to the study of Chinese pottery and porcelain, particularly from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. His works, such as Song and Yuan Ceramics and Ming Ceramics, remain influential resources in the field. His research helped bridge cultural and historical insights into East Asian ceramics, making substantial contributions to art history and fostering greater appreciation of Chinese ceramic traditions in Japan.

A RARE CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADON ‘BAMBOO-NECK’ VASE, XIANWENPING, POSSIBLY SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127-1279)

The compressed, spreading body is carved with a series of shallow horizontal grooves, and the tall tapering neck is encircled by two bow-string bands in imitation of bamboo below the wide, galleried mouth with incurved rim. The vase is covered overall with an ice-crackle glaze of blue-green color ending just above the unglazed foot rim.

This elegant vessel is celebrated for its harmonious form and exquisite glaze. The raised encircling lines on the neck lend it one of its Chinese names, xianwenping, or “vase with bow-string decoration.”

Two larger Longquan bottle vases with similar profiles and decorations are documented: one in the Tokyo Nezu Museum, illustrated in G. St. G. M. Gompertz’s Chinese Celadon Wares (London, 1980, p. 153, pl. 75a), and another in the Hakone Art Museum, published in Mayuyama, Seventy Years (vol. I, Tokyo, 1976, p. 164, fig. 476). A closely related example is housed in the Palace Museum, Beijing, featured in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (II) (Hong Kong, 1996, p. 115, no. 103), also see Longquan of the World: Longquan Celadon and Globalization, Vol. 1, A History of Thousands of Years, no. 20, p66.

Vases of this form are typically crafted with two distinct mouth rim types: a wide, dish-shaped mouth or a slightly inverted galleried rim, to which the present vase belongs. For comparison, see a vase in the Nezu Museum, Tokyo, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu (vol. 12, Tokyo, 1977, no. 81), and another in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, catalogued in M. Medley’s Illustrated Catalogue of Celadon Wares (London, 1977, pl. V, no. 50).

Evidence suggests these two rim types were contemporaneous, supported by finds from a Southern Song hoard excavated at Jinyucun, Suining City, Sichuan Province, in 1991, and from Longquan kiln sites. The former is discussed in Newly Discovered Southern Song Ceramics - A ThirteenthCentury “Time Capsule” (Japan, 1998, pp. 14-16, nos. 2-4), and the latter in Longquan Qingci Yanjiu (Beijing, 1989, pl. 41, fig. 1).

Additionally, vases of this form were part of the cargo from a shipwreck dated to 1323, found off the Sinan coast of Korea en route to Japan. For further details, see the Sinan Wreck Exhibition (National Museum of Korea, Seoul, 1977, no. 15). Compare to a smaller example (15.6cm high), see Christie’s Hong Kong, 30/11/2023, lot 2907. AN EXTREMELY RARE CHINESE INSCRIBED XING WHITE-GLAZED ‘EGG-SHELL’ ‘GUAN’

BOWL, TANG-FIVE DYNASTIES (618-960)

The bowl is very fine and thinly potted, covered with creamy white glaze. The base is inscribed with a “Guan” (Official) mark. With a fitted box.

The present bowl is extremely rare not just because of the incised character ‘guan’ to the base, but also the fine shape and thinly potted body. In 2003, numerous shards of white-glazed bowls with the ‘guan’ character inscribed to the base were excavated at the old Xing kiln site in Hebei province. Lü Chenglong in Dingyaoyaji gugongbowuyuan zhencang ji chutu dingyao ciqi huicui / Selection of Ding Ware. The Palace Museum’s Collection and Archaeological Excavation, Beijing, 2012, p. 13, suggests that almost all white porcelains bearing the ‘guan’ mark are products of the ‘Ding’ kilns, with the notable exception of a small group made at the ‘Xing’ kilns, such as the present bowl, and that the ‘guan’ mark is an indication of higher quality. Fan Dongqing in ‘Early Ding Wares in the Shanghai Museum’, Orientations, February 1991, p. 52, further notes that wares inscribed with the character is associated with the imperial court, high officials and noble families, and were produced to the highest standards.

TABLET GUI, EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

Crafted into the shape of a gui-disc. Decorated with shallow relief and openwork carvings. The face of the gui features patterns of the Twelve Ornaments (Shier Zhang), with a pair of upside-down cage patterns carved on each side. On both the top and bottom edges of the gui, coiled chi-dragon motifs are carved in openwork. On the reverse side of the disc, at the center, is a dragon surrounded by carved grains and grain stalks. At the top are three stars aligned, while the bottom features water patterns. With a carved fitted hongmu stand.

The gui-disc was an ancient jade artifact used by emperors and feudal lords during court meetings or sacrificial ceremonies. As noted in the Rites of Zhou: Spring Officials: Keeper of Ceremonial Jade (Zhou Li•Chun Guan•Dian Rui):“The duke holds the Jade Gui… to pay homage to the king during court assemblies.”Zheng Xuan’s commentary cites Zheng Sinong, stating: “The Gui-disc and Bi-disc are presented to the king.”In the Book of the Later Han: Annals of Emperor Ming (Hou Han Shu, Ming Di Ji):“He personally held the jade Gui and Bi discs to respectfully worship Heaven and Earth.”

A similar white jade example see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jade Artifacts, Vol.: II, no. 129. 12cm high

A CHINESE WHITE JADE CARVED “DRAGON” TABLET, GUI, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

This gui is crafted from white jade and features a classic flat shape. At the top, a radiant treasure orb is carved in relief, while two majestic dragons rise along the edges of the gui, as if fiercely vying for the orb. At the bottom, tumultuous waves are depicted, with a smaller gui-shaped element emerging from the sea, creating a dynamic and tension-filled composition. Every detail is meticulously carved, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship.

It’s with a fitted zitan stand, crafted from fine materials with a deep, rich tone, exuding a sense of elegance and stability. The stand is intricately carved with numerous interconnected ruyi lingzhi motifs, harmonizing perfectly with the jade gui’s design, achieving a seamless blend of aesthetics and symbolism.

Gui is one of the six ritual jade objects in ancient China, characterized by a pointed upper end, a flat lower edge, and a thin, flat shape. It was widely used as an emblem of rank and status during court rituals and as a sacrificial or ceremonial object for oaths. During the Qing dynasty, the emperors, with their fondness for antiquity, commissioned the Zaobanchu (Imperial Workshop) to create various archaistic objects, reviving ancient forms with the era’s finest craftsmanship, adding a unique charm to these pieces.

293 A GROUP OF FIVE CHINESE GREEN JADE CARVED RITUAL VESSELS, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

Comprising a Ding censer, a pair of Gu vases, and a pair of candle sticks. This set is crafted from highquality celadon jade and consists of five pieces: a central censer, flanked by a pair of gu vases, and a pair of candlesticks on either side, all modelled after traditional sacrificial vessels used in ancient rituals.

The censer features a circular open mouth with a knobbed lid on top, a constricted neck, and a pair of ears resembling ceremonial crown ornaments on either side. It has a rounded shoulder and a slightly inward-curving rounded belly, supported by three legs shaped like beast heads. The lid is adorned with honeysuckle patterns, while the neck features alternating shou (longevity) and swastika motifs. The body is decorated with ferocious and awe-inspiring taotie masks, invoking a sense of mystery and intimidation associated with these mythical creatures.

The twin gu vases share an identical form, with flaring trumpet-shaped mouths, rounded rims, long necks, slightly bulging waists, and flaring bases that

mirror the mouth’s shape for symmetrical elegance. The necks and feet are adorned with banana leaf patterns oriented in opposing directions, symbolizing flourishing endeavours. The bulging waist sections feature shou characters within ruyi-shaped cartouches, signifying aspirations for happiness and longevity.

The candlesticks are supported by bases resembling inverted ritual bells, their surfaces adorned with taotie masks. A wide, circular plate forms the middle section, while a slender, elegant candle picket rises gracefully from the top, exuding refined beauty and sophistication.

This five-piece set reflects meticulous jade selection and is modelled after ancient bronze vessels, showcasing the era’s reverence for antiquity and pursuit of classical aesthetics. The carving exhibits fluid and sharp techniques, delineating intricate and auspicious motifs with precision. This collection embodies profound respect for and preservation of traditional Chinese culture, standing as a masterpiece of Qing dynasty archaistic jade craftsmanship.

The phrase “Dao Tian Zhu Sheng Ren Wan Nian Chang Shou Chang” (Praying to Heaven for the Saintly Ruler’s Eternal Longevity and Prosperity) originally comes from Yuan dynasty poet Zhao Mengfu’s “Twenty-Four Poems on Farming and Weaving, Composed by Imperial Decree.” It was later commonly used as the inscription for imperial seals during the Qing dynasty. Such seals were typically referred to as “Daotian Zhushengren Seals.” These seals were primarily used during significant rituals and ceremonies, such as offerings to heaven and blessings, symbolizing prayers for the emperor’s eternal reign and the nation’s prosperity. Most of these seals were crafted from jade, showcasing exquisite carving techniques and elegant inscriptions, embodying the grandeur of the imperial court. The inscriptions were written in seal script (zhuan shu), noted for their refined and solemn appearance. These

seals represent a critical symbol of imperial authority during the Qing dynasty and are regarded as valuable historical artifacts. Some of these seals are preserved in cultural institutions, such as the Palace Museum. 5.7cm long; 5.7cm wide; 5.5cm high; 310g

A LARGE CHINESE YELLOWISH-WHITE JADE CARVED DRAGON SEAL, MING/QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

The seal is carved with a square and upright form exuding a sense of solidity. Atop the smooth seal surface lies a coiled dragon, its body crouched in repose. The dragon’s robust and agile form conveys a powerful sense of vitality. Though depicted in a resting state, it appears poised to leap into the air at any moment, embodying dynamic tension and balance. The seal face carved in relief with Yang Ping Zhi Du Gong Yin. This interplay of stillness and motion also symbolizes the inviolable majesty and sanctity of imperial authority.

A FINE AND LARGE CHINESE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, XUANDE SHISHOU MARK, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)

The graceful, standing figure has a serene expression, wears a silver bead necklace and layered robes inlaid in silver wire with bats amidst clouds that drape elegantly around the body and flare at the hem. A four-character mark, Xuande Shisou, is inlaid in silver wire on the back. With a fitted hard wood stand.

Shisou, active during late Ming/early Qing period, was known for his extremely refined copper with inlaid silver wire works. His sculptures were made using refined purple copper, following the copper smelting techniques from the Xuande period. A close examination of the exposed copper areas at the base of this sculpture reveals a purplish-gold hue with hints of green, and the silver glimmers subtly. The texture is fine and dense, and only such meticulously refined copper could achieve this transformative patina, thereby enhancing the expressiveness of the work. A VERY RARE CHINESE DEGE WROUGHT IRON CIRCULAR COVERED BOX WITH SILVER INLAY, QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

This type of metalwork was produced in very high quality and vast number in Tibet as early as the 14th and 15th century. The unique technique was been known as ‘damascening’ to Europeans, but called ‘Dege’ in China, the name of the town through which the metal work was brought to China-proper. Different from common inlay-work, Dege work have their surface of wrought iron abraded and then gold and/or silver applied in highly decorative patterns. So favoured were they that the Qianlong emperor specially commissioned a group of Tibetans to produce vessels and objects in this technique for daily use, such as brush pots and plates, in addition to those used for traditional ceremonial and religious purposes.

A group of iron vessels, inlaid in silver with Qianlong reign mark and of the period, has been researched by Brian McElney and published by Orientations Magazine and The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, England, where there are several examples. 11cm diameter; 8.5cm high

366 A RARE CHINESE BLUE GLASS BUDDHIST CONCH, QIANLONG MARK OF THE PERIOD, DATED TO 1780

It is crafted from blue-coloured glass in the shape of a ritual conch. The spiral at the apex unfolds layer by layer in a counterclockwise direction, embodying the left-turning style. Each layer’s outer edge is decorated with engraved lines and dots, while the area near the opening is intricately decorated with the Eight Auspicious Symbols (ashtamangala): the Wheel of Dharma, the Precious Parasol, the Endless Knot, the Lotus, the Treasure Vase, the Golden Fish, the White Canopy, and the Victory Banner. Together with the conch form itself, these elements symbolize unending prosperity, the liberation of all beings, universal clarity, auspicious sounds, transcendence, complete wisdom, eternal freedom, and the purification of karma. This reflects the essence of Buddhist teachings.

Between the Eight Auspicious Symbols and the rim of the opening, an inscription reads: “Auspicious Conch of Great Benefit” and “Respectfully offered during the Mid-Autumn of the 45th year of Qianlong (1780) at the Miaogao Zhuangyan Hall of the Sumeru Bliss Longevity Temple.”

The Sumeru Bliss Longevity Temple (Xumifushou Temple) was constructed in the 45th year of Qianlong’s reign to commemorate the visit of the 6th Panchen Lama, who came to celebrate Emperor Qianlong’s 70th birthday. Modeled after the Panchen Lama’s residence, the Tashilhunpo Monastery, this temple, also known as the “Panchen Palace,” hosted grand ceremonies, including lectures by the Panchen Lama, in the Miaogao Zhuangyan Hall. This sacred object was once enshrined in this historically and spiritually significant temple, highlighting its noble provenance and extraordinary value as a collectible.

The conch shell is one of the important ritual instruments in Buddhism. The swastika motif in Buddhism symbolizes the cosmic vortex of rotation, which moves counterclockwise (to the left). This

unyielding force of rotation propels the universe, generating the self-rotation and orbit of all forms, creating the relative concept of time and bringing everything in the world into existence. According to ancient legend, Acala, entrusted with the primordial wisdom of the Buddha Mother, wields a left-turning conch to save all sentient beings. Another legend suggests that the left-turning conch is an incarnation of Acala, regarded as his relic. In Vajrayana Buddhism, practitioners often venerate such conches as if beholding the Buddha himself, placing them at the centre of sacred altars.
