The Lilian Rollason Collection

When I first met Lilian, her family had already made a daring, midnight escape from East to West Berlin in the early 1950s, she had moved to Australia shortly thereafter, been a model, had her own fashion label and married Herb Berger.

Lilian and Herb ran a rambling and eccentric antiques shop in Fitzroy, Melbourne, then called Fitzroy Auctions, which celebrated its centenary under their ownership. It has long since become a retail shop, rather than an auction house, renamed Antiques Emporium. I think it was 1981 when I fell under Lilian’s spell, and never escaped. I was not alone. She knew everyone! Graeme Simsion’s novel The Best of Adam Sharp includes Lilian as a character in thin disguise, dispensing wise advice.

Film directors, famous actors and set dressers were drawn to the Fitzroy antiques shop by the wide variety of props for hire, and odd and exotic objects to buy. Television series such as The Sullivans relied heavily on the diversity of hire props, from diamond necklaces, gold prospecting gear to housefuls of Victorian furnishings. For most of the 1980s, I found myself behind the counter of the shop, allowing Lilian and Herb to travel extensively. “Don’t drink the tea in the Potala” she admonished, in case I was ever in Tibet, “the yak butter is rancid”. She returned from Istanbul with caskets of rose cut diamond jewellery and from France came many containers of wonderful things.

There were two distinct periods of Lilian’s life as an antiques dealer. The second was during the 1990s when she had a three-story antiques shop in Manila in the Philippines, her home with her second husband. She would go into the Chinese countryside with her bodyguard, pearl-handled pistol and rolls of American dollars in hand. Buying and exporting antiques from China was then both legal and lucrative. Close social contact with both the Marcos and Ramos families allowed Lilian to effect great improvements in the Philippine orphanages. Her considerable philanthropic work was something she seldom mentioned, but that gave her great satisfaction.

The 2000s saw Lilian back in Australia, living in an 1830s sandstone mansion in Potts Point, Rockwall House, where she hosted many events such as lavish Christmas parties for orphaned children and fashion shows. An exhibition of Philippine art textiles brought a bevy of grand Philippine dignitaries, including the Ambassador. “Just work out who to call ‘Your Grace’, and call everyone else darling” was her protocol advice. After that event Lilian took the Philippine guests out to Harry’s Cafe de Wheels in Woolloomooloo for pie floaters which we ate standing next to the roadside caravan food kiosk. I am not sure what the locals thought about half a dozen women in evening gowns and cascades of jewels, men in tuxedos and a bunch of nervous white-shirted bodyguards, but Lilian’s guests seemed to enjoy the novelty hugely. It was in Rockwall House Lilian married her third husband, John Rollason.

For three years in the late 2010s Lilian and John lived in their apartment on ‘The World’, a residential ocean liner replete with tennis court, library, cinema and several restaurants. Circumnavigating the world in their own home allowed Lilian to acquire more rare antiques, jewellery and fashion, as evidenced by this eclectic, finely curated collection.
