We warmly welcome watch collectors, enthusiasts and admirers to our first Timepieces offering for 2025, it is gratifying to start the year with an array of fine timepieces that traverses styles, ages and value levels.
Leading the sale is lot 31 a superb gold Submariner ref 1680 offered on behalf of the original owner’s family. On this reference the dial is distinguished by being fitted with raised gold chaton markers in which the luminescent is placed, as opposed to directly applied luminescent dots and batons that are present on the steel stainless Submariner versions. The use of applied chatons to the dial has earnt this reference the affectionate nickname of the ‘nipple dial’ amongst Rolex afficionados. This watch was understandably treasured and worn by the owner, a recipient of the Order of Australia, during the course of his business dealings across Perth and the Orient in the 1970s, and is accompanied by original box and papers.
Rolex is well represented in this sale with a later classic Submariner ref 14060, a Milgauss ref 116400GV, Day-Date ref 1601, an Oyster Perpertual 41 with its striking green dial, as well as an elegant Rolex Prince with eminent provenance. Hailing from what is perhaps Audemars Piguet’s bygone elegant and refined era, is lot 19 a gold chronograph Huitieme ref 25644, this example may well present the collector with an opportunity to alternate between a bold and sporty Royal Oak by day and this classic Huitieme by night.
We are honoured to offer a group of pilot’s watches, formerly the property of a British Royal Air Force Tornado Pilot, lots 21-25 - robust and reliable tool watches by brands IWC, Breitling and Bremont all of which have a long and storied association with aviation. Aviator’s watches have come a long way since 1904 when Louis Cartier gifted his pilot friend Alberto Santos-Dumont that now famous watch, dubbed the Cartier Santos. Where once these early pilot watches primarily featured superior construction and simple pared back bold dials, today they have given way to large dial displays fitted with luminous materials, chronograph functions, GMT or dual time and slide rule, all of which mirror the technological advancements in aviation itself. In certain instances specific customised models are only issued to those who’ve piloted a specific corresponding type of aircraft, but that doesn’t mean you need to have earnt your wings to appreciate the utilitarian aesthetic of these precise instruments that captivate watch enthusiasts both within and beyond aviation circles.
