The Alta Parking Structure is a 530-feet-long-by-264-feet-wide, 521,312 square feet, four level, precast concrete parking structure with retail at ground level. The parking structure will serve Google Landings to the west and Charleston East to the north by providing 1,709 parking spaces as well as parking spaces for motorcycles and bicycles. In addition to the day 1 parking program, the project also includes design features that allow other future uses and conversions. These features include, levelled floor plates, demountable interior express ramp for future lightwell or courtyard spaces, taller floor to floor with ground level being 18 feet tall to allow the possibility of future event spaces. The project facade is comprised of kinetic flapper façade system with custom mural. Pedestrian entrances will be accentuated with significant recesses in the building massing in conjunction with landscape design features. Undulating wood fins and canopies further enhance the human experience at these pedestrian entrances. The vehicular entrances are accentuated with ACM panel portals.
The project also includes improvement to the existing greenway that the new garage interfaces on the northside. These landscaping improvements include paths, plaza spaces, bicycle parking spaces as well as planting and stormwater treatment areas to enhance the ecology and natural habitats of the site. The project will also extend the existing Greenway to cross Alta Avenue at a new pedestrian street crossing. A new Greenway segment is proposed on 900 Alta which will connect to the Permanente Creek trail to connect the greenway to the Landings project site.
The structural design for our parking structure is cast-in-place concrete moment frame with duble hexilical vehicular ramping with pedestriant cross over at selected levels. The parking structure has one on grade and six elevated levels with a below grade cross under for a total of 404,929 SF and 1301 parking spaces.
The design for the Parking Structure IV is focused on providing UCD Health with a parking structure that is adaptable and flexible for future use. The location of entrances, double ramping, additional spaces, and infrastructure for future control measures within the garage incorporated into our design allow for a number of future possibilities including nesting of restricted access parking. Additionally, our double ramp design with pedestrian cross-overs allow for flexible uses by patrons for easy navigation in exiting and accessing the structure.
The exterior design fully addresses the concerns of adjacent V Street neighborhood by softening the form of the parking structure by delivering a North elevation with elevated aesthetics, while also addressing the security and light trespass concerns along this elevation. The exterior treatments on the East, West and South elevations of the structure maintain the vocabulary of the North elevation; however, these elevations are focused on drawing vehicular and pedestrian attention to the entrances and access points of the structure.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT BUILDING
The design of the parking structure includes the use of a double helix ramping system. This approach is a recognized solution for larger parking structures which have a significant number of parking spaces above grade and/or a need to enter or exit the facility in a timely fashion. The double helix in effect allows the buildings parking supply to be accessed via two separate circuits. This allows for the efficient navigation of the parking floors and allows for two vertical floors of travel with every 360 degree turning movement. In order to balance the high efficiency of a double helix design, we have incorporated into our solution the ability to have vehicular cross overs at every level. These cross overs allow the driver to change circuits at any time up or down the structure. In order to maximize day 1 parking, we are providing the vehicular cross overs at the bottom and top of the structure so that the adjacent circuit may be used if the current circuit has no vacancy.
