NL <-> NOR _ a new Dutch embassy in Norway graduation project september 2015 TU/e nominated Archiprix selection grade: 9 During a study trip to Oslo came out that the main task of an embassy is encouraging exchange, in this case between the Norwegians and the Dutch. The current embassy building didn’t support these goals. Therefore, a new design was created. In the new design a statement was made on how exchange between the Dutch and the Norwegians can be stimulated by means of architecture. Different types of exchange were explored and reflected into the design. Definition of exchange: ‘An act of giving one thing and receiving another’
Location: public atmosphere and prominent spot <-> positive improvement surroundings Functional layout: sharing facilities <-> involvement in exchange Detailing and relation surroundings: executed in a Dutch way <-> based on Norwegian principles and knowledge Public vs. private atmosphere: gentle appearance and relationship surroundings <-> living there

Location and public influence One type of exchange occurs in the position of the chosen site. The architectural intervention of the embassy building should improve the surroundings it is in. This improvement could be made by adding different routings and volumes. The choice for a public atmosphere, where the architectural intervention gives something to the city, in exchange the Dutch can built on such prominent spot in the city center. And also a public funtion was added: a restaurant. Linked to the concept of the embassyand the history of the spot.

Functional layout embassy The functional layout of the building will refer to this encouragement. In the end the building should host both, the Norwegians and the Dutch to create the optimal exchange. Therefore some functions could be shared with the Norwegians and a public part of the building was added.

Ambassador’s residence Creating a private and public atmosphere in one building, the residence and the embassy part, should be done in a balanced way. Exchange here occurs between both and its surroundings, but in a gentle way. Because the spot of the building has a public character, to improve exchange of course, creating a private atmosphere there was an important theme. The most important architectural element to create this ultimate relationship is the courtyard.

Materials and detailling The characteristics of the location and the reflection of the relation with the host country together with sustainable principles, influenced the choices for materials and detailing. The building should fit in its surroundings and climate. Typical Norwegian architecture can give us insight on these aspects. Although in the end the building should represent the Dutch. Therefore, will the detailing of the building been made in a ‘Dutch’ way, but inspired by Norwegian knowledge. Due to the use of materials and detailing this relationship is made in the architectural expression, providing an architectural (sustainable) quality.

Tapping water _ Dutch promotional gift part of graduation research december 2014 grade: 8 Dutch identity cannot be described in one solid term, but a lot of aspects are related to it. Therefore, designing a Dutch gift is about what you personally want to emphasize of the Dutch identity. Mark Kranenburg stated the following about the Dutch culture, in The Netherlands: practical guide for the foreigner and a mirror for the Dutch: ‘’…without compromise and consensus, it would be impossible for the Dutch to live together on a small strip of land that is largely below sea level.’’ i For me personally he captured a very important aspect of the Dutch culture, the culture of consensus. In one way this culture of consensus is related to the Dutch history in for example the ‘poldermodel’, the history we all have in common. On the other hand, it also emphasis the need of the culture of consensus to deal with the problems our contemporary society is facing. The design of the Dutch promotional gift is based on the quote mentioned above, in the appearance of a water jug. As water plays an important role in the Netherlands. In positive ways, for instance recreational. On the other hand it also shows the vulnerability of the Netherlands with the water above the flat surface. Where the law of communicating vessels, which represent the culture of consensus, makes the tapping work.
Mark Kranenburg, ‘’The political wing of the Polder Model’’ in The Netherlands: practical guide for the foreigner and a mirror for the Dutch , by Sam Garret, Remy Chavannes, John Kroon (Ed.) (Amsterdam : Prometheus, 2001), pag 39. i

Renovation annex _ sheltered accomodation august 2015
This annex building currently was used as an office. The owners wanted to transform this building into a sheltered housing. In the current situation there wasn’t enough daylight so you can live comfortably. Besides that the old layout of the building was unsuitable, as well as the steep stairs. And only a small amount of space was available. In the new design all those shortcomings are combined into one concept. By replacing the stairs into the center of the building and combining this vertical element with roof lights. Two of the shortcomings could be solved and less functional space wasted. The stairs becomes a multifunctional element with on both side’s storage and a toilet placed at the back. Due to the limited amount of space, the bedrooms and bathroom are placed on the second floor.

The location of the summer school: Cesis, is situated in the middle of national park Gauja. The theme of the summer school, Get Well City, refers to both the history and the current state of Cesis. In the recent past the town used to be a Soviet Union recreational area. The park with its lush nature and health and recreation facilities were an important source of income of the local population. Nowadays Cesis is in disrepair, having authorities and population on the lookout for new sources of income and ways to attract people. During the summer school we stayed in Rucka Manor, a former sanatorium, which is currently under reconstruction and destined as an artists’ residence. Within two weeks we designed and realized a miniature sanatorium in an old cold storage facility next to Rucka Manor, resulting in a sauna and infinity pool. Working together with students and professionals from various nationalities, inspired by different local experts, we programmed a sequence of sanatorium experiences. The result of our project is a continuous wooden structure in which the visitors can experience this sequence.

The Ecological Country House was an assignment for the Holtfeld foundation, an association that aspires to create self-sufficient communities. The country house is to accommodate sixteen households consisting of four different generations. The starting point for the design is the pyramid of Maslow, a graphical representation of the hierarchy of human needs. The ecological concept of the design is based on fulfilling these needs. The greenhouse-dwelling concept is the most important ecological concept in the design, as it is to provide comfort, food and additional space depending on season.

The outer appearance of the design is a combination of the characteristics of a traditional greenhouse with those of a traditional country villa. The front facade of the greenhouse is slanted under an angle that takes optimal advantage of available sunlight, especially during winter. Besides the climatically advantages of the greenhouse concept, in this design the greenhouse area also functions as a collective space, where the residents meet, eat, play etc.
at the centre of the greenhouse. These shared facilities serve also to separate the private apartments from the public teahouse, which is located in front of the greenhouse. All dwellings are connected with a shared area, but those who opt for some privacy can find it in the rooms facing the garden.
The required functions and spaces are planned in blocks. Shared spaces such as the living room and kitchen, as well as the Bed and Breakfast are located

DDW Seeker EH3 _ architectural design and construction october 2013 grade: 7
Seeker is a series of co-created spaceship sculptures that evolves over time. The Seeker is conceived as a spaceship - a research project about the social aspects of living in a spaceship and the isolation this entails. To let people radically rethink the future of human habitation, inspired by space architecture and science fiction. One of the most important themes of this project is being self-sufficient, like you have to be in space. This Seeker Project, the third of its kind, was carried out as part of the Dutch Design Week 2013, on the Lichtplein (‘Light Square’) in the city

of Eindhoven. First a few volunteers were for some time isolated inside the Seeker, exposed on the square. After they left, the Seeker, still showing traces of the isolated-living experiment, was opened to the public.
the Dutch Design Week, travel on to other expositions, it is designed to grow and develop during the course of its journey. Due to the limited time we were forced to make fast decisions as a group. The end result is therefore an ongoing interaction between design and construction. My role in the creative process was rather varying, in the beginning we worked in the large group generating ideas for the overall design. Besides that, I worked in the specialized group that took care of the energy and cladding of the Seeker.
Our task was to draw up, in collaboration with a group of architectural students, an architectural design for the third Seeker and subsequently to realize it. Starting point for the design was mandatory use of two Kip-caravans. It had its origin in an organic shape. As the spaceship will, after
