Life aboard the carracks: travelling as Magellan and Elcano
Let´s imagine how it was‌visiting the 16th century Portuguese carrack at Vila do Conde
The carrack has three main parts: bow, stern and cloister

In the carrack, everybody had his own function:the captain, the pilot, the priest, the scribe, the bomber, apothecary‌ The rudder man guided the ship.

The sailors
Food Bread, cereals, salted meat, salted and dried fish, cheese,grain, beans and wine were the most used foods. As the sailors didn’t have fresh food they got sick very easily.
Hygiene The ships were very dirty and missed the basic conditions. There were rats and insects aboard that caused a lot of deaths- Sailors usually didn’t shower.
