Ferdinand Magellan
The Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to navigate the Strait in 1520 during his circumnavigation voyage.
Also called the Magellan Region, it is divided by territorial waters of Chile and Argentina, the region is situated between the continental zone and the Antarctic zone, later it was route for famous researchers and scientists like Francis Drake and Charles Darwin.
The trip • The Strait of Magellan is a 600km long sea passage and is the most important of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. • The Strait of Magellan takes its name in honor of the European navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who had the dream of discovering a maritime route to India and, finally, Ferdinand Magellan, prove that the Earth is round. During the spring of 1520, commanded the expedition known as the Armada of the Moluccas, bound for the Pacific Ocean and passed through the strait. • For weeks the navigator traveled through the icy water and extreme cold of the region to finally discover a passage that no one dreamed existed. But unfortunately, the Portuguese navigator died in Mactan, in the Philippines.
The Strait
• The passage is 3 to 32 km wide, is difficult to travel, has a course full of obstacles, strong winds of 55-60 knots, in addition to the unstable climate and subject to constant storms, so the Strait is considered as a region of complicated navigation. • It lies between the continent to the north and Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn to the south. This strait is the largest and most important natural passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
