THE PAVILION AMS 469
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The objective of the project was to design a pavilion for a place of community in Bowling Green, KY for the use of the people who goes to visit the Circus Square Park in downtown. My goal was to design a space for people to use for hosting a small event or just for hangout in general and to also design an accessible space for ADA as well. The objective of this project was to also design the structure that relates to our given artists and be able to explain it.
Location: Bowling Green, Circus Square Park 601 State St., Bowling Green, KY 42101
MIQUEL BARCELÓ
Miquel Barceló was born in Felanitx, Majorca/ Mallorca. He studied at the Arts and Crafts School in Palma and moved to study in Barcelona. He was most famous for his contemporary style of art. His works include: paintings, scultptures, drawings, and cast iron and ceramics. His works are regarded as being neoexpressionism because of how rough he keeps the materials exposed.
Miquel’s most famous work was done in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Chamber in the UN’s Palace of Nations in Geneva. The painting was done under the dome of the palace, and it represents multilateralism (alliance of multiple countries). The materials of the work is kept dripping down and preserved in the dripping shape to make it spikey.
Plenilunio or the “Classical Seascape” was another work that was done by Miquel. Most of his works are done with the use of desaturated colors, so it is quite rare to see any exaggeration in the colors. His works are also kept simple and contemporary, so the pavilion I designed is contemporary and simple.

SITE PLAN
The site is located a block from downtown Bowling Green in the Circus Square Park. The sun moves from East to West. The site I chose is the flat land on the back corner of the park. There are two ramps for ADA shown with a rrows that can be accessed straight from the two parking lots shown. It is surrounded by historical buildings like La Gala and SKyPAC. The site is also surrounded by one-way road and have two parking lots. Once every year, the park hosts an event called the International Festival,
so having a pavilion in the site could provide shelter for locals who attend the festival to get away from the sun or rain.
SECTION
The section cut shows the interior of the pavilion and the different sizes columns. The pavilion is quite spacious in comparison to the people in the section. It also shows the ceiling that is designed to replicate Barcelo’s work that was done in the UN’s palace.
CEILING ARTWORK The ceiling was designed as a tribute to Miquel Barcelo by replicating his most famous work. This style of artwork was designed to represent the multilateralism because the use of multiple colors speaks diversity, and there will be people of many cultures who will be using this pavilion.
THE COLUMNS
The columns are designed in three various sizes to represent the three social classes. The smallest columns on the left represent the lower class, middle columns represent the middle class, and the largest columns represent the high class. The arrangements of the columns are smaller to high class with the middle class in the between. The middle columns are designed to be in different lengths to signify the unstableness of the middle class because they always have the potential to either become poorer or wealthier, so it is considered as unstable. The bigger columns are
given more room because they are viewed as always being comfortable or breathable unlike the smaller columns that are grouped together really closely and look a bit less uncomfortable than the other columns. The colors of the columns are chosen to be soothing and not exaggerated to compliment the works of Barcelo as his paintings are often made with similar color tone.
THE ROOF
The roof of the structure is bent upwards in an uplifting motion on the bigger columns side to compliment Barcelo’s work and to get a message across about the higher class are well better off for themselves and seem to always be getting wealthier whereas the lower classes are stable on the flat side of the roof structure because as a contemporary artist, the main message he wants to represent in his work is about the current issues in society.
USES FOR THE PAVILION
Becuase of how spacious it is, this structure is a multi-prupose pavilion. It could be used to organize a small rendezvous, wedding reception, or a picnicwith the marble tables provided. As mentioned earlier, the pavilion could become a great use for guests visiting various festivals that are held at the park.
