WRITE SOME SHIT

UNDERSTANDING THE STAGES OF WHITE TEARS PART II: THE WHITE BYSTANDER

By Hannah Drake | leo@leoweekly.com Disclaimer: Before I get into this article, this is not about placing yourself or your loved ones in any danger. Please note, many of these incidents do not involve someone using a physical weapon but instead using tears and whiteness as a weapon which can become deadly for the Black person involved in the incident. LAST WEEK I wrote “Understanding The Stages of White Tears,” highlighting Abigail Elphick and her encounter and strategic performance with Ijeoma Ukenta at Short Hills Mall in New Jersey. We see Abigail screaming, fake crying, chasing Ijeoma and writhing on the floor during the video, all before calling 911. These actions are a performance to avoid the repercussions that typically come once these videos go viral. (You can read about the stages at writesomeshit.com or leoweekly.com.) While many people focus on Abigail, and rightly so, there is another aspect of this video that I must point out — the White Bystander. Understanding the phases, we immediately see Abigail, claiming she is having a mental breakdown, constantly looking around for others to support her behavior. At the 1:34 mark, she asks, “Why aren’t you guys defending me?” She is doing her best to put on a stellar performance, and she is expecting the bystanders to come to her defense. Within minutes (approximately 2:07), in steps the first bystander telling Ijeoma, “Why don’t you step away from her?” You can see Abigail move her performance closer to the bystander because she knows the white woman has taken the bait. If you watch the video from the beginning, you can see the bystander has been watching this entire incident unfold but immediately doesn’t address Abigail but addresses the Black woman. She puts the onus on the Black woman to move away from Abigail when Abigail is the one creating the problem. The Black woman is no threat to Abigail; in fact, Abigail is the one that tried to assault her and is chasing her throughout the store. After passing out and writhing on the floor didn’t work, now Abigail must take it up a notch and continues to yell, “Get her away from me!” when she is the one chasing the Black woman around. She now finds

LEOWEEKLY.COM // AUGUST 4, 2021

Bystander No. 2, who asks her, “Are you by yourself?” Bystander No. 2 has bought into the act. Something must be wrong with Abigail. Is she here alone? Does she have help? At the outset, it looked like Bystander #2 was going to do the right thing, but she fails to see that she has already become complicit in Abigail’s performance. Bystander No. 2 turns to Iejoma and says, “Just put the phone down. She’s sick.” Once again, putting the onus on Ijeoma. Abigail is not sick. There is nothing wrong with Abigail; she just wants to avoid the consequences of her behavior. Please understand, Black women are not responsible for the bad behavior of white women. It is not our responsibility to make white women feel better about abusing us. It is not our responsibility to make the abuse of Black women more acceptable because a white woman is crying. It is not our responsibility to understand a white woman is having a bad day so she is allowed to verbally and physically assault Black women. What many need to understand in these incidents, the bystanders are a part of the performance. Abigail knows to sell the drama, she must get others on her side, which is why she is constantly looking around, even demanding, “Why aren’t you defending me?!” The reason Abigail knows this will work is because she knows that white women identify with her. They do not see Ijeoma, a Black woman, as someone that can be threatened or a victim. Because Abigail is a white woman, they see her as someone that could be their mom, sister, aunt or daughter. They see Abigail as someone that can be the victim because, in Abigail, they see themselves. They never recognize what is happening to Ijeoma. In fact, they do not even see Iejoma. However, if a Black woman were chasing a white woman around a store, no one would coddle her, because they inherently see Black women as aggressors. One of the first steps in dealing with these incidents is asking yourself, “How am I seeing this situation, and is my bias preventing me from seeing this Black person as a victim?” In another article, “Dear White Women, Get Your Friends,” I challenged white people to ask themselves, “If a white person was doing this, would I call 911?” If a white person I did not know was walking down my sidewalk, would I call 911? If a white

person was moving into my community and I was unsure who they were, would I call 911? If a white person didn’t wave to me as they exited an Airbnb would I call 911? If a white person was in the swimming pool, and I wasn’t sure they lived in the apartment complex, would I call 911? More than likely, the answer is no. So, the actions aren’t the problem. It is how you perceive Black people, which makes everyday, mundane activities seem sinister to white people. It has nothing to do with the actions; it’s the race of the person doing them. That is what white people must face, and that requires going inwardly and seeing some things in yourself that you may not be ready to face. After you check your bias, affirm the Black person. These actions seem so outrageous that often even the Black person cannot believe it is happening. In the video, Iejoma says, “This does not feel real.” Let the Black person know, “I see what is happening to you, and it is real.” Then do not feed into Abigail’s actions. That is how these incidents thrive. Abigail needs the audience because it will make what she is doing more believable. Do not indulge women like Abigail. Abigail is not the victim. Be crystal clear to her that you see and understand that the Black person is the victim. After affirming the Black person, immediately step in and firmly tell Abigail to stop. “Stop it. Your performance is not working.” You must be firm and direct. “What you are doing to this Black person is wrong. It is racist, and actions like yours have led to the death of many Black people. Stop it.” It is not enough to just say stop. Do not offer them any excuses. Do not say, “I know you’re having a bad day, or I know it’s tough out here, etc.” It is imperative you let them know that you are aware that their actions are rooted in racism. They know this; however, what will shock them is that you know this. The jig is up. This will stun women like Abigail because they know white people are typically on their side even when they are wrong, even when they are doing something blatantly racist. Inherently they believe, white people are supposed to defend white people by any means necessary. They will not be ready for another white person to support a Black person. But hold firm. After you defend the Black person and

tell women like Abigail to stop, expect more anger and theatrics. However, it is not time to indulge, it is not time to soothe; it is time to speak the truth. This will probably lead to more tears and theatrics, but remember, this is all part of the performance. The fact that you have seen beyond their mask is shocking for them, and they will start the performance of a lifetime and will probably lash out in anger. “How dare you defend them. Don’t you see what they are doing?” More than likely, women that behave like this, have never had a white person firmly tell them the truth, and we often know the truth angers people who are not ready to accept and deal with the truth. Hopefully, following these steps will deescalate the situation. However, do not leave the incident. As I stated in “Understanding the Stages of White Tears,” these incidents will often end with a call to the police. It is imperative that you stay at the scene to give a complete account when the police arrive. We witnessed the lies in this video, “She’s threatening me,” when not one threat was heard. Yet, women like Abigail will hold on to the performance and the lies in a last-ditch effort to get someone on their side, which is often the police. Because they cannot get you to side with them, they know the police are there to protect and serve white people, and the police will believe them. It is rare that the police step in and defend the Black person. In these videos of Abigail and Iejoma, no one stayed to defend Ijeoma. The officers spoke with Abigail, comforted Abigail, told Ijeoma to move and largely dismissed the Black woman. Stay and give a complete account because the Black person will need witnesses. As we continue to see these videos across the nation, know that this only stops when white people step in to stop it. Black people alone cannot end this because Black people did not create this. These are not just white women having a tantrum. These incidents are rooted in centuries of racism. I understand that it often takes courage to step up when these incidents occur. However, know that you having the courage to say something is one of the first steps to ending this behavior. •

LOUISVILLE COURT CHAOS LEAVES SOME UNAWARE THEY’RE MISSING COURT DATES By Jacob Ryan | Kentucky Center For Investigative Reporting

THE WORST, BEST & MOST ABSURD THORN: IN THE SHADOW OF THE EVICTION WAVE

This story was produced by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, a nonprofit newsroom by Louisville Public Media. For more, visit KyCIR. org. LAST MONTH in Jefferson County District Court, a prosecutor mistakenly asked a judge to issue a bench warrant for a man’s arrest after he failed to show for a court date that never should have existed. The man had already pled guilty in 2018 to misdemeanor harassment, and he’d completed the conditions of probation. In the eyes of the county, justice had been served. But the case was inexplicably scheduled for a review. By the time it reached the courtroom, his case file had been lost and an incomplete duplicate was created. An inexperienced prosecutor saw that the defendant received a court notice but didn’t show. Failing to appear in court is a crime, so the prosecutor asked the judge to issue an arrest warrant. In this case, the judge realized the mistake and denied the warrant request. There’s no way to track how often this is happening as the state’s busiest court returns to mostly in-person proceedings some 16 months after COVID effectively closed the court last year. Ingrid Geiser, the first assistant in the Jefferson County Attorney’s office, said the mistaken warrant request came amid a “perfect storm” of mishaps in that particular case. “With the volume of cases we handle occasionally there is going to be a mistake,” Geiser said. “But it’s not routine.” The busy district court is plagued by confusion and setbacks as it struggles to return to some semblance of normal post-COVID, according to judges, attorneys and court officials. Beginning last week, in-person attendance in Jefferson County District Court is required for everyone charged with a criminal offense except those facing traffic violations. But some people aren’t getting told when to come

THORNS & ROSES Advocates warned us that a wave of evictions would follow the expiration of the federal moratorium. Well, our time has come. The moratorium lapsed this weekend, and while there is still millions of dollars in assistance out there for renters, landlords now have carte blanche to steamroll over tenants if they don’t feel like waiting long periods of time to receive assistance, or if they don’t want to file paperwork with the city. Luckily, renters can now receive checks from the city directly to find alternative housing, according to the Courier Journal. But still, landlords need to do the right thing. Do you really want to be responsible for throwing a family out on the streets? For context, there are 81,000 households in Kentucky that owe rent.

to court, and some attorneys say their clients are getting a notice to attend court after the actual court date has passed. Yet now, there’s no guarantee a person will see a judge even if they do show up to court. Large dockets and newly imposed time restrictions in criminal courtrooms have led to hundreds of cases being rescheduled since last week. Minor hiccups can have longranging consequences for the people affected. A charge of failing to appear in a court is a serious offense that can result in arrest or a suspended driver’s license. “It’s a debacle,” said District Court Judge Stephanie Pearce Burke. “And that doesn’t do it justice.”

‘WE’VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS’

When the court effectively closed last March, most proceedings were handled virtually by allowing people to call-in or appear via a screen. In May 2021, court officials ordered the courts across the state to open, but continued to allow virtual proceedings while

clerks worked in-person throughout the pandemic. “I think some people were proud to say we stayed open, that the administration of justice continued,” said Kevin Smalley, the Jefferson Circuit Court Clerk chief deputy. But as the pandemic slowed the court system, cases began piling up. The district court’s case backlog peaked at nearly 30,000 cases last August. More than 19,000 cases were still pending by early July — 5,700 of which hadn’t yet been added to any dockets for a review, according to data provided by the Administrative Office of the Courts. The clerk’s office, which serves as custodian for records in district, circuit and family courts, is currently down 12% of their staff. David Nicholson, the elected Jefferson Circuit Court Clerk, was not available for an interview for this story. Nicholson announced his intent to run for mayor earlier this month. It’s the court clerk’s office’s job to mail out notices for court hearings, but Smalley said the office doesn’t track how often it fails to alert someone of a court date. “Fortunately, that’s few and far

Conservative judges doing something right for once? A panel of three denied an injunction against Indiana University’s vaccine mandate. Between Mitch McConnell’s pro-vaccine ads and this, we’re beginning to think the culture war might not result in death to humanity after all. Unfortunately, students at IU can still request religious exemptions for refusing the vaccine, but we hope this convinces some to go ahead and get the shot. I mean, think about how long it takes to get an 18-year-old to fill out the FAFSA.

THORN: THE ATTACK OF THE MOSQUITOES

If it were possible to write a double thorn with a dagger, we would but we only have a thorn. Here’s the thing, fucking Midwestern mosquitoes have to go. Just the other night, I was strolling to a friend’s house to deliver a birthday gift and the shady MFs sent their distraction fly. I promptly smashed it. He was just a diversion to give me false hope that I had smashed and defeated one of the enemies. All the while I was distracted, another 40 or 50 of the bastards attacked me leaving me full of itchy giant bumps. I am declaring mosquitoes a national threat and their assault on me an act of war. Come at me bros, I’m buying a fogger. Will you join me, folks? They can’t get away with this. *scratch scratch* —Erica Rucker

THORN: THE COVID BLUES

COVID is unrelenting and the new Delta variant has pushed Kentucky’s infection rate high — it’s nearing 10%. All of this before we look at sending our kids back to school, gathering for fall festivals and getting ourselves ready for the best sports seasons. Honestly, the pandemic is proving to us that it isn’t ready to let go and who are we to continue to tempt fate. Mask mandates shouldn’t be optional. Businesses need to require that employees be vaccinated, especially schools and other places where large numbers of people are required to be together for multiple hours at a time. COVID isn’t playing and we shouldn’t be either. Tempt fate and we will continue to lose. This is one of those where the house will win and it won’t be our house.

But Geiser, with the Jefferson County Attorney’s office, said prosecutors are busy and have little time to research a case to ensure people were alerted of a court date. The Jefferson County Attorney, which prosecutes cases in district court, lost 28% of its criminal division prosecutors in the last year. If a notice is in the file and a person isn’t in court — regardless of whether a person received the notice — Geiser says the prosecutor has the discretion to ask a judge to issue an arrest warrant. “If it’s a low-level offense … most of the time we’re not going to ask for a bench warrant the first go,” she said. “But if they haven’t shown a couple of times, yeah, we’re going to ask for a bench warrant.” Prosecutors have been more lenient about requesting a bench warrant during the pandemic when someone doesn’t show up for court, Geiser said. Still, hundreds of such warrants are approved each month — with more than 8,200 issued between January and June, according to data provided by the Jefferson Circuit Court Clerk. Large courts across the country are also dealing with case backlogs and staffing shortages, said Bill Raftery, an analyst with the National Center for State Courts. And as courts begin to dig out from the last year, mistakes are likely being made, he said. “That’s hard for people to hear, but it’s true,” he said. “We’ve never seen anything like this.” Keith Kamenish, a longtime defense attorney and former prosecutor, said people deserve to be notified of their court date —

and they shouldn’t be penalized if the court makes a mistake. “No matter how perfect we try to make the system, it never is,” he said.

RESOLUTION DELAYED AFTER NO NOTICE

Even when a bench warrant isn’t issued, missing court or having a date rescheduled can have an emotional or financial toll on the people caught in the system. Chyna Griffin has had more than 20 court dates since she was cited for having no insurance after a 2015 car accident. No one was hurt in the wreck, but the judge ordered her to pay $1,200 in restitution, and she struggled to make the payments. But she’d finally settled the bill, and she was looking forward to one final hearing and feeling the weight lift from her shoulders. She paid a Chyna Griffin. | SUBMITTED PHOTO. neighbor $40 in March to borrow a car so she could drive from her home in Frankfort to the courthouse to get her final hearing on the docket. But no one told her it happened. When a judge called the case, Griffin wasn’t there. “I was excited,” she said. “I did my job, it may have taken a lot of time but by the grace of God it got done… I want to get this matter resolved.” Griffin didn’t have an attorney representing her any longer, so she was on her own. Private attorneys say the onus has shifted to them to make sure they’re proactively checking case dockets. Casey McCall, a local defense attorney, said he’s received court notices for clients that have come after a court date has passed. “I’ve got dozens if not hundreds of cases with people that call me every couple of weeks asking when their case is going to be

HAVE YOU TRIED DELTA 8? THE DUBIOUSLY-‘LEGAL WEED’ IS A SAVIOR FOR THE HEMP INDUSTRY. BUT IS IT SAFE FOR CONSUMERS?

by Danielle Grady | dgrady@leoweekly.com

HAVE you tried Delta 8? It’s found in Louisville hemp shops. Your fave Instagram influencer is pushing it on their profile. Your friend offered you a hit off his vape last time you saw him. It’s a “legal weed.” You don’t really understand what it is or how you’re able to use it in a state as anti-pot as Kentucky. But sure, you’ll try it. The answers behind what it is and its legality are more complicated than it may seem based on Delta 8’s

ubiquitousness. But, let’s start with the base facts. Delta 8 is a kind of THC. It’s a naturally-occurring compound that is found in small amounts in the cannabis plant. Usually, when people refer to THC, they’re talking about Delta 9, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. But, Delta 8 has psychoactive effects, too. The two types of THC are molecularly similar, but Delta 8 has a double bond on its eighth carbon instead of its ninth. Delta 8 has not been

researched much, but a small study in Israel in the ‘90s found that it helped child cancer patients beat nausea. Now, to the aspects of Delta 8 that aren’t officially proven, but which many users and sellers report: It purportedly doesn’t get you as high as Delta 9 does. The way Delta 8 works within the endocannabinoid system suggests that this is the case, although it hasn’t been stringently studied. It’s also said to not make you as anxious or paranoid as Delta 9 can. LEOWEEKLY.COM // AUGUST 4, 2021

Depending on who you talk to, Delta 8 is either a clever workaround to help wouldbe medical marijuana patients legally ease symptoms, or it’s a way for the hemp industry to make money after a tough couple years starting in 2019. “To me, it was the bridge between medical marijuana and CBD that people needed,” said Dee Dee Taylor, the founder and CEO of 502 Hemp, a shop in the Louisville area that sells Delta 8 products through its online store registered in Indiana. Adriane Polyniak, the owner of Bluegrass Hemp Oil, wants the hemp industry to keep its focus on CBD — a hemp derivative without psychoactive side effects — which has helped her 16-year-old son overcome his seizures. “While businesses like us are still pushing to legitimize it, and to encourage people to find an all-natural option for their health concerns like our son has found, the industry is just moving from one thing to another, just to make a dollar,” she said. The argument for why Delta 8 is legal goes back to the 2018 Hemp Farming Bill. This federal legislation OK’d hemp-derived substances as long as they contained less than 0.3% of Delta 9 THC. But, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, or KDA, claims that Delta 8 is, in fact, still illegal because it is listed as a controlled substance by the DEA. Kentucky is one of 16 states that have made moves to restrict Delta 8. Michigan is working on plans to regulate it. This has led to the Kentucky State Police raiding some stores selling Delta 8 products in the state. The Kentucky Hemp Association has responded by filing an injunction against the KDA and the KSP in an attempt to stop the raids and to clarify the legality of Delta 8. Delta 8 products, similarly to all consumable hemp-derived products, also lack regulations by the federal and state government. Even proponents, like Jana Groda, the vice

president of the Kentucky Hemp Association, warn that consumers should be careful with where they buy Delta 8 and what businesses they buy it from. “The big concern is that it’s done correctly and not in your kitchen,” said Groda, who is also the owner of One Love Hemp Dispensary in Louisville.

WHAT USERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT DELTA 8

In a video titled, “Will Delta-8 Get a Stoner High,” YouTuber Anna Campbell takes a hit from a Delta 8 vape called Delta Effex. “Ooo,” she exclaims with wide eyes before blowing out a cloud of vapor. She calls a friend to fill her in on the experience. “I took one hit of it, and I’m high!” she says with shock. After several puffs off of several Delta Effex products, she summarizes, “I feel like it’s a good, happy medium, although I will say, it’s closer to THC than CBD.” In a different Delta 8 video, YouTuber Drew Gunby describes his first experience trying Delta 8 in between hits of a Cakebranded cart. “I’m just lifted. I’m not faded. I’m not zooted. I mean, I’m kind of zooted right now. But like it’s just a lift. You’re lifted. And you’re in the zone,” he says. The way in which Delta 8 THC is known to interact with the endocannbinoid system indicates that it probably won’t get you as high as Delta 9 THC, according to leading cannabis researcher Dr. Ethan Russo. But, this lack of potency can be overcome with a higher dose, he said. Taylor, the owner of 502 Hemp, said many of her customers use Delta 8, not to get high, but to ease symptoms of chronic sicknesses. Some are as old as 80, and others are as young as 21, the cut-off age for who Taylor will sell Delta 8 products to. “I have cancer customers that use the

On April 19, 2021, one day before the pro-weed holiday of 4/20, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture issued an opinion letter, saying that Delta 8 products in Kentucky are illegal. The department had been receiving questions about Delta 8’s legality, the letter said, and the agency had determined that it was not. The DEA still lists Delta 8 as a controlled substance, despite the 2018 Hemp Farming Bill, which legalized hempderived substances as long as they contain less than 0.3% of Delta 9 THC. The DEA approved a rule last year clarifying its stance on the Hemp Farming Bill. The rule stated that syntheticallyderived tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) are still controlled substances. Delta 8 proponents argue that it is not synthetic. But, Harris Bricken, a law firm specializing in cannabis law, said in a blog post that the DEA likely considers Delta 8 to be synthetic because it is produced from hemp CBD through a chemical reaction. In a statement, KDA’s director of communications Sean Southard said that the Kentucky General Assembly and U.S. Congress passed hemp laws after being assured by advocates that hemp was not an intoxicating substance. “Now, some want to argue that lawmakers accidentally

legalized an intoxicating synthetic substance called Delta-8 THC,” said Southard. A federal law also bans substances that have a “substantially similar” chemical structure to a controlled substance like Delta 9 THC. And, those that have a “substantially similar” stimulant, depressant or hallucinogenic effect. This law could be applied to Delta 8. Groda, with the Kentucky Hemp Association, said she wants to let a judge decide whether Delta 8 is legal or not in Kentucky. She hopes that the Association’s injunction accomplishes this. “If it’s banned, then let’s ban. If it’s not banned, then let’s make it not banned. But it should be very clear,” said Groda.

THE BUSINESS OF DELTA 8

Delta 8 emerged on the hemp scene in 2020, the year after the hemp industry — nationwide and in Kentucky — started to wane. After the Hemp Farming bill passed, an influx of farmers and processors saturated the market. The pandemic has not helped the industry. Several of the CBD shops that flooded Bardstown Road started to close, said Groda. The number of hemp processors and growers in Kentucky has declined, too. In 2019, there were 978 licensed hemp farmers in Kentucky and 200 processors, according to the KDA. As of June 2021, there were 450 growers and 140 processors. Hemp businesses also blame the KDA for hurting the hemp industry, such as the department’s enforcement of a state law that prevents hemp flower from being sold on the

from ISO/IEC 17025-accredited labs and cGMP audit-certified labs. And, Taylor advises consumers against buying Delta 8 from gas stations. 502 Hemp vets its Delta 8 producers, she said. A couple months into selling Delta 8 back in 2020, Jana Groda pulled the products from her shop’s shelves over concerns about some of the businesses making Delta 8 products. She tested each product at her own expense through a thirdparty lab. After its results for mycotoxins, pesticides and Delta 9 amounts turned up clean, she started selling Delta 8 again. This was all before the Kentucky Department of Agriculture issued its opinion that Delta 8 is illegal in Kentucky. Now, her shop’s website says it sells Delta 8 products online and via curbside pickup in Indiana only. Groda recommends that consumers not buy Delta 8 sold by a brand that doesn’t have a website or stores that don’t check for ID. “Whenever things look sketchy, things feel sketchy, it probably is sketchy,” she said. “And the same thing goes with CBD and Delta 9.” Without regulations, though, businesses are not required to test for certain things. It’s the lack of regulations, along with Delta 8’s hazy legality, that leads to Russo saying that using Delta 8 products, in general, is not a good idea. “I can’t recommend that people be trying these products,” he said. Instead, Russo wants cannabis to be de-scheduled all together and then regulated. “What we need is reform of cannabis laws that’s going

public market in Kentucky. The KDA says it is simply following the rules state lawmakers have approved for the hemp program. And, in a statement, Southard blamed the FDA for dragging its feet on issuing guidance for CBD products. This also stifled the industry, he said. “The Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Commissioner Ryan Quarles have been a national leader in hemp,” he said. Since Delta 8 was introduced to the industry, its decline has started to reverse, said Ware. Reviving the hemp economy was one of the reasons why Sutterfield with Eastern Kentucky Hemp Co. got into the Delta 8 business. But, Sutterfield says he was also motivated by the good he thinks the different parts of the hemp plant can do for the public. The 2018 Farming Bill gave him that opportunity. “What that did was, companies like ourselves said OK, so here we are, here’s the rulebook. All right, all these cannabinoids are legal, now let’s go on a mission to isolate each and every one of these cannabinoids and get them down to where, you know if we can isolate each cannabinoid, then we can fully research it.” Sutterfield claims to be one of the first, if not the first, company with ties in Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio and Tennessee to start producing Delta 8, which he began doing in early 2020. He considers Eastern Kentucky Hemp Co. to be a research and development business, as well as a hemp processor and seller. When Sutterfield started selling Delta 8 in his stores, he

noticed an almost immediate positive response. “We had people, you know, driving two, three hours,” said Sutterfield. “Cancer patients, for instance, dealing with these things, you know, dealing with cancer, stuff like that, just being like, ‘This helps better than anything that the doctor’s prescribing. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing. I’m so happy that this is available.’” Sutterfield also thinks Delta 8 has the ability to help the farmers and small businesses in Kentucky that are in the hemp business. Instead, he believes the KDA’s moves against Delta 8 have done the opposite. Taylor with 502 Hemp moved to host her website to Indiana, which has been friendlier to Delta 8. She also plans to open a hemp store in the state. Because of hints that the KDA was not going to be supportive of Delta 8, Sutterfield built his Delta 8 operations out of state. And, on June 15, the Kentucky State Police raided Sutterfield’s shop in Morehead. He claims they took tens of thousands of dollars worth of product off the shelves and $1,000 cash. KSP’s Morehead post referred LEO to KSP’s open records department for law enforcement’s narrative of the raid. The department did not respond before this article went to press. An attorney for the Kentucky Hemp Association, Chris Wiest, told WFPL on July 21 that law enforcement agencies in Kentucky have raided five stores selling Delta 8 since April. So far, Sutterfield hasn’t faced any charges, but his bank accounts remain frozen, forcing him to deal in cash only, all

while attempting to open a new store in Ohio. Sutterfield’s Morehead store just recently opened again after having to be closed for almost one month, according to the business owner. “Honestly, it really is so upsetting, you know, because Kentucky was the pilot program for the federal program, right?” said Sutterfield. “ Kentuckians were like, ‘Oh my gosh, you know, we’re going to be on the forefront of this industry. We’re going to be the industry’s leaders in research and development, and it’s going to be great, you know?’” Instead, said Sutterfield, the state government is killing the local hemp industry. Sutterfield also said he would be open to more regulations for Delta 8 products. “No legitimate business or professional business is going to mind at all to provide toxicology and microbial reports, ensuring that the distillate used in the creation of these products are free of any chemicals or solvents that they’re worried about,” he said. The KDA compared creating regulations for Delta 8 to flouting state law, which the department says does not support the legality of the product. Sutterfield has an analogy that he thinks highlights how inflexible the KDA is being: If someone found mold on bread at the grocery store, would the government try to ban it? “Or, are they going to come through and put in regulations to where all companies producing bread have to make services up to a certain standard?” he said. •

AN EXCERPT FROM ‘TALES FROM THE KENTUCKY HEMP HIGHWAY’ NEW BOOK RECALLS THE EARLY DAYS OF HEMP IN THE BLUEGRASS STATE Kentucky and hemp have a long and storied history, and author Dan Isenstein nails down the details of the early days in his new book ‘Tales from the Kentucky Hemp Highway,’ which is available via Arcadia Publishing on Monday, Aug. 9. Below is an excerpt from two chapters of the book, one covering Kentucky’s first hemp crop near Danville, the other looking at the hemp industry’s role during World War II.

BOYLE COUNTY: FIRST CROP

The marker commemorating Kentucky’s first hemp crop is located in Boyle County. The narrative on this marker introduces the importance of hemp on the frontier. The marker celebrates original pioneer Archibald McNeill, who planted Kentucky’s first recorded hemp crop in 1775. Kentucky’s first recorded hemp crop, 1775, was on Clark’s Run Creek, near Danville. Grown by Archibald McNeill, who brought the first seed with him when he located here. Hemp production spread slowly throughout the area, but Boyle County later became one of ten Bluegrass counties which together produced over 90 percent of entire US yield in 1889.—Marker 1279, Boyle County Courthouse, Danville McNeill’s introduction of hemp culture in Kentucky can be directly traced back to the establishment of the first permanent settlement in the territory. So, how does McNeill come to Kentucky, and what happens to him after he plants that first hemp crop in 1775? In 1754, at the start of the French and Indian War, Kentucky was part of North America claimed by France. The French surrendered these claims to the British in the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war in 1763. While the British agreed to limit settlement in the lands ceded by France, the acquisition of new territory initiated a rush by colonials to scout, survey and claim it. Virginia veterans in particular believed their service should be compensated in the form of “western bounty grants” — land — in the newly acquired territory. Despite the interest, permanent settlement in Kentucky was not attempted by whites until 1774. That summer, James Harrod and 31 men traveled by canoe down the Ohio River. They entered the mouth of the Kentucky River and paddled upstream to what is now Mercer County, where they disembarked and hiked inland. By June 16, 1774, they had erected the first “permanent” cabins in the territory. This activity attracted the attention of local Native American tribes; a raiding party ambushed a group of five settlers who were clearing trees on July 20, 1774. One of the men, Jared Cowan, was killed, while Jacob Sandusky and another man fled down the Cumberland River, eventually making it to New Orleans. The fifth settler returned to the fort to report the attack. Concurrent to these events, famed frontiersman Daniel Boone arrived at the settlement with a message from Lord Dunsmore, the colonial governor of Virginia. Because of recent Native American activity in the territory, Dunmore put out a call for men to form a militia regiment. The ensuing

the chapter “First Things in Kentucky,” Collins writes, “The first seed hemp was raised in 1775, by Archibald McNeill, on Clark’s Creek not far from Danville.” The wording appears deliberate, potentially implying more than just Kentucky’s first hemp crop. Hemp seed would have been an extremely valuable commodity on the frontier. Was McNeill growing a crop of seed hemp for sale or use in the following season? Sadly, Archibald McNeill did not survive the frontier for very long. In 1779, a clerk with the Fincastle County, Virginia court traveled to Kentucky to register land claims. Among the registered claims recorded at Fort Harrod on November 3, the clerk’s office issued Peggy McNeill confirmation of her settler’s claim. It was made in the name of her husband, Archibald McNeill, who is listed on the claim as “deceased.” Collins published his original volume in 1847, a peak period for Kentucky’s hemp industry.

When Collins compiled his research, the significance of the state’s hemp industry was undeniable. The impact of the industry is reflected throughout the entire volume. In each county summary, he included up-to-date demographic and economic information. This information included the population of freed men and enslaved people, staple crops (including hemp) with annual output, as well as the number and types of merchants and businesses. Significantly, Collins made sure to mention ropewalks and bagging factories as signs of economic development. His clear understanding of hemp’s significance to the state narrative suggests that his use of the term seed hemp was deliberate. McNeill may be credited with planting the first recorded hemp crop in Kentucky, but his is not Boyle County’s only compelling hemp story: Boyle County was formed from parts of Mercer and Lincoln in 1841 and named for the Honorable John Boyle, for many years the chief justice of the state.…The soil of this county is very deep and rich, and generally lies well for cultivation. The products are principally stock and hemp. The citizens are generally independent in their circumstances well educated and intelligent. The towns of Boyle County are Danville and Perryville.…Danville was established by the Virginia legislature in 1787, and was for many years the seat of government of Kentucky.

HEMP FOR VICTORY

The domestic hemp industry was almost nonexistent in the 1930s. By 1937, hemp’s relationship and physical resemblance to “marihuana” had created a crippling legal environment for the industry. The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was the result of a public awareness campaign about the use of the cannabis plant as a recreational drug. The language of the tax on the transfer of hemp from grower to mill owner created an insurmountable financial obstacle. By 1939, four farms in Kentucky grew a total of 90 tons of hemp fiber; another six farms grew 30 acres of seed hemp. The three cord and twine factories still in operation mostly processed imported fibers like sisal.

Bickett & Boone: The TRUE OG's!

If you have enjoyed a joint of Kentucky's largest cash crop in your lifetime, thank the Cornbread Mafia. If they didn't grow it, they probably had an influence on someone who did!

Jimmy Bickett at Cherry Run Farm The term “Cornbread Mafia” was coined over forty years ago on September 15, 1978 by a Kentucky grower, when a group of good old boys in central Kentucky reclaimed one of their marijuana fields that had been seized by local law enforcement. The name stuck and it is still with them today. They went on to become the largest domestic marijuana group in United States history, dominating cannabis cultivation for twenty plus years. They put Kentucky on the map for growing the best…and after paying their debt to society following their group’s demise in 1989…they are back to their roots, this time cultivating legal hemp. They were the best for a reason, and now all those years of experience, and love for the plant, are being poured into Bickett & Boone CBD. They start by using the finest quality hemp grown on their certified organic farm, then extract only the bud for highest full spectrum cannabinoid content. Bickett and Boone are truly the OGs of Kentucky cannabis. Their pioneering work in cannabis cultivation changed history and established cannabis as Kentucky's largest cash crop. Experience Kentucky cannabis history today at Cherry Run Farm in Raywick, Ky for the annual Hempstock festival sponsored by Bickett & Boone. It is on September 11, and will be featuring Ashton Shepherd, Cody Lee Meece, Dustin Collins, and Layla Spring. You can pick up signed copies of Joe Keith Bickett's books, "The Origins of the Cornbread Mafia" and "Cornbread Mafia, The Outlaws of Central Kentucky" at Hempstock. Kentucky's cannabis legends are still making history. Tune into the 2 Shots on a Barrel podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube for most recent interviews with the Bicketts and The Godfather of Grass, Johnny Boone.

SONIC BREAKDOWN

TIA ORTIZ — “INTO YOU” By Tyrel Kessinger | leo@leoweekly.com LIKE so many things, the advent of the pandemic in early 2020 overshadowed the release of Tia Ortiz’s song “Into You.” This is a shame, considering the song is the culmination of two years of hard work, but a fortuitous bright side is Ortiz’s message, which is now very relevant. “I wanted to write a song about overcoming things in life,” said Ortiz, who is based in Nashville but has ties to Louisville. “It’s a song about empowerment and about realizing you had it within yourself to do better the whole time, even when you didn’t know you could. But, on the other hand, I also want my music to be what you turn on when you get in the car and just want to go for a drive with your hand out the window.” While the definition of overcoming bad situations and finding empowerment is a different story for everyone, Ortiz had no problem mining her own particular past for material. “I realized that so many people settle for less and don’t even realize they’re doing it. I wanted this song to be a reminder to those who have lost sight of what they deserve. My idea was that, basically, you’re in this relationship, right, and your partner is nice enough and you’re kind of happy and things aren’t so bad. But then this person cheats on you, and you’re like ‘What the hell was I thinking?’ Like, here I was was convincing myself this whole time, and they were the ones that cheated on me?” “Into You” fits nicely into the modern pantheon of pop gems. The song begins with a smooth head-bop, snap-your-fingers groove with Ortiz’s vocals finding a sweet

balance between a modern day country lilt and the likes of Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. It’s a very subtle song with elements that add up to a soft web of catchy hooks and a sing-along chorus. “So this song is different because when I originally wrote the melody, it was a love song. Suffice it to say, things didn’t work out with said love interest, so I kind of was planning on letting the song die because the emotion tied to it was still too raw. When I went back to the studio, my producer and I hit a creative brick wall at about 80 miles per hour and we were exhausting all options when I finally broke down told him I had been hiding one more that he might like. I played him the first 15 seconds, and this song was born.” Ortiz said that while, originally, “Into You” was not a sound she was after, it was one she eventually learned to embrace as part of her. “When I first entered the studio over two years ago I had a dream to do traditional country music, similar to Brooks & Dunn or Rascal Flatts. Their sweeping melodies always intoxicated me. Unfortunately, with my first release, I made the mistake of trusting someone who I thought had the same vision as me and was burned pretty badly. But then my producer messaged me and told me I needed to get back into the studio to prove that I could write something better. It took a couple visits to the studio but we were able to find the sound that best fit me and what I wanted to say.” •

LOCAL ALBUM REVIEWS By Syd Bishop | leo@leoweekly.com

JORDAN JETSON PHOENIX ROSE

DISTILL ERY

VOTED

BEST LOUISVILLE DISTILLERY

Emcee Jordan Jetson has remained an incredible creative force since coming onto the scene. There is much to be read into the title Phoenix Rose, from Jetson’s personal tragedies and challenges, to a rebirth of his career. It’s this later read that merits immediate attention: Jetson has never missed, and, as such, needed no artistic revival. To the former point, opener “Came Back” looks at how adversity shaped Jetson as an artist, whether that’s how his upbringing and time in the streets shaped him, or understandably oblique referencs to his current troubles. Still, Jetson ends with the beautiful “Undead,” a passionate track about the emotional toll of perseverance. The only grievance to be found with Phoenix Rose is in it’s brevity, which clocks in at around 9 minutes. More please, Mr. Jetson. Link: jordanjetson.bandcamp.com/album/phoenix-rose

THE CUT FAMILY FOUNDATION BACKYARD MIX TAPE VOL. 8

By this point, you might imagine that The Cut Family Foundation has run out of steam with their Backyard Mix Tape series, but then you’d be wrong. Like with the previous entries into this series, the band has amassed a host of jams and sketches that are fleshed out on each mixtape and blended into a synthesized whole. The end result is like tuning a psychedelic radio station that is as interested in rock and funk as it is in African jazz and lo-fi experimental. For example, the jam that comes in at the 25 minute mark transitions from an upbeat bass and flute groove with synths beeping and warbling to ambient groove. The Cut Family Foundation thrives on the edge, when they are fully free of any inhibition or expectation, and the strength of the eighth mixtape proves just that. LONDON MISSILE

BAD SINES FOR THE FUTURE

The melancholic glitch pop of London Missile makes for an easy listen. Although Bad Sines For the Future could remain comfortable within the confines of the genre, dream pop by way of chiptunes, the duo mixes it up by including outside collaborators. While tracks like “Good Night Bitter Prince” and “Generator” establish the lo-fi bedroom-pop-chill of the album, the project switches gears with “These Aren’t My Clothes.” By featuring emcee Blvck DaVinci, London Missile shows the versatility of their craft as something that can evolve and morph to satisfy the needs of the artist and listener. Punctuated by shorter experimental numbers like “World Select,” the album makes liberal use of sine wave synths, which makes for a hazy listen. Altogether, Bad Sines For The Future proves to be anything but what the title suggests — they create a harbinger of pleasant, easy tidings unafraid to establish and evolve a paradigm within the confines of the album’s length. GRADUAL YEARS

DECLINING CONTRAST

COFFEE, GIFTS, APPAREL & ACCESSORIES 32

LEOWEEKLY.COM // AUGUST 4, 2021

The appeal of ambient music may exist solely in the ability of the artist to build atmosphere, to use washes of sounds that move at glacial speed to communicate some primal sense. The Gradual Years understands that assignment, meditating throughout Decling Contrast through slow, deliberate notes. The drones on opener “Entropy” are simultaneously ominous and strangely soothing, a sonic Gordian knot that is somehow both intricate and austere. Tape hiss is a feature here, one that ambient pioneers Stars of the Lid gleefully acknowledged as bringing them joy, which is certainly so here. It is within these organic elements, the subtle breathing of analog gear, that elevates this into the sublime. This is an ideal listen for headphones, full volume, sitting with closed eyes to immerse yourself in the aural tapestry.

FOOD & DRINK

RECOMMENDED

FOR GOOD PHO, GO TO EATZ VIETNAMESE By Robin Garr | LouisvilleHotBytes.com LAST WEEK, I had to try calling Vietnam Kitchen a half-dozen times before I could break through the busy line. I guess I wasn’t the only Louisville foodie aching to find out for sure if they were really back from a month-long vacation. But one reality remains: Vietnam Kitchen, the beloved South End storefront eatery that introduced many of us to Vietnamese cuisine, isn’t going to stay the same, assuming it stays at all. The shop is on the market as a turnkey operation, and owner Alex Lam will eventually either hand it over to new owners or close it. We wish the Lam family and Vietnam Kitchen’s many fans well, but let’s face it: If you haven’t done this already, it’s past time to begin exploring the metro’s other Vietnamese restaurants. There are at least a dozen, and each has its own particular pleasures. But when I’m hankering for pho, the traditional and soul-consoling Vietnamese soup, I head for Eatz Vietnamese. Eatz’s menu is relatively brief, with about 20 dishes, only a fraction of the 125 choices at Vietnam Kitchen, but it offers affordable Vietnamese basics. A half dozen appetizers

range in price from $5 (for crispy fried tofu) to $8 (for fish-sauce fried chicken wings). Three versions of banh mi, the traditional Vietnamese street-food sandwich, are $7 (for a standard model with three meats or a fiery meatless option) or $8 (for one topped with fried eggs). Eight entrees, including three kinds of pho, a couple of noodle dishes, fried rice and a Vietnamese bento, are priced from $8 (for fried rice) to $16 (for the bento, com dac biet). Vietnamese iced coffee ($5) made a great accompaniment to my meal. Dark, strong coffee mixed with sweet and creamy condensed milk goes well with Vietnamese fare, and the dairy component makes a first-class antidote to fiery Southeast Asian dishes. Spring rolls ($5.50) come as a pair, filled with your choice of shrimp and pork or tofu. Their translucent, rice-paper wrappers were surprisingly resistant to the bite, but once I got through, the fillings were fresh and good: chopped romaine, flat leaf parsley, shredded carrot, cucumber and a couple of cubes of silken tofu. creamy within, crisp brown on the outside, had been cut in half to display both brown and white surfaces. The plate was garnished with a sprig of Thai basil and a mound of shredded carrot and came with a square bowl of sweet peanut sauce for dipping. A crispy tofu appetizer ($5) lived up to name “crispy,” with six, large cubes of silken tofu encased in a rice-flour breading that had somehow been magically fried to a glassy-crisp exterior while staying pure white. Were they air-fried? The server smiled, shook her head, said something about “fresh oil” and didn’t comment further. It was plated on a bright-orange, hot-sweet chile sauce. The banh mi sandwich traces its roots back to France’s 100-year colonization of Vietnam, which — among other not-soattractive things — brought baguettes and French pastries to Saigon. The bread that Eatz uses for its banh mi is so spectacularly good that I need one, along with my pho, every time I go there. The sambal spicy tofu banh mi ($7) is a fiery, meatless rendition that fills a tender, golden-brown crusty loaf with crusty chunks of fried tofu, julienned carrot and radish, crisp cucumber strips, jalapeño rounds and cilantro leaves, all slathered with a bright-orange sauce piquant enough to grab your attention. We came for pho, and a huge bowl of beef pho ($12) with added bone marrow

($4) hit the spot. (It can also be made with meatballs, beef tendon, brisket, beef tripe, chicken tenderloin or tofu.) The genius of pho resides in the variety of flavors and textures combining at the moment of serving for a great taste experience. Eatz, indeed, produces one of the best phos I’ve had. It’s built on a memorable beef bone broth with ginger and onion. It’s filled just before service with tender but chewy rice vermicelli, fresh cilantro, scallion, onion, Thai basil and culantro (cilantro’s stronger cousin). The traditional plate of fresh bean sprouts, lettuce, lime and jalapeño comes alongside for you to add to your liking. The marrow was white and fatty, powerfully beefy and melted into the broth. The thin-sliced, flavorful, but gristly beef had been sliced very thin and placed on a pile atop the broth so the parts above the surface remained pink and raw while the rest gradually turned brown as it cooked in the steaming soup. With two apps, a banh mi and a generous bowl of pho, our tab came to $40.81. I added a $9 tip. •

A VISIT TO KEVIN SMITH’S FICTIONAL FAST-FOOD RESTAURANT, MOOBY’S THE POP-UP WILL BE IN LOUISVILLE THROUGH AUG. 10 By Tarah Chieı | leo@leoweekly.com I WANTED to open this review with a clever quip from one of multi-hyphenate filmmaker Kevin Smith’s clever films, but there are simply too many to choose from. Such is the genius of Smith for longtime fans such as myself. I may or may not have yelped in excitement upon learning Mooby’s, the fictional fast-food joint featured in many of Smith’s films, would be coming to life through a pop-up dining experience right here in Louisville at Tin Roof, located at 3921 Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews. Mooby’s appeared in 1999’s “Dogma” and 2001’s “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” but is best known as the primary filming location for “Clerks II.” To bring Mooby’s from the big screen to the real world, Smith partnered with pop culture pop-up veteran Derek Berry, the mastermind behind similarly nostalgic pop-ups based on “Saved By the Bell,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and “Good Burger.” “Kevin always wanted to do a Mooby’s pop-up,” Berry told LEO, “but when the pandemic hit, we weren’t sure how to do it. When indoor dining was shut down in 2020, the first Mooby’s was a delivery-only partnership with Postmates. As restrictions loosened, Mooby’s began a North American tour, most recently stopping in Detroit and Toronto.” To manage demand, pre-paid reservations are required to visit Mooby’s. Reservations are $29 per person, which includes a main dish and a side. Additional items, including desserts, sodas, CBD seltzers, cocktails and custom craft brews can be tacked on for an additional fee. Virtual reservation in hand, my husband, Kevin, and I made our way to Mooby’s on opening night. We knew we had found the right place when we spied the giant Chronic (half of the Bluntman and Chronic superhero duo) inflatable figure and a white tarp messily spray-painted with the words “I Assure You We’re Open!” hanging from the front windows. We gave our name to the hostess and were directed to the bar to pick up our food. The bar area had been decked out to resemble a fast-food pick-up counter, complete with Mooby’s branded food packaging,

employee of the month plaques, and a sign on the cash register declaring, “If you plan to shoplift, let us know.” Even the servers wore purple Mooby’s T-shirts emblazoned with the restaurant’s eponymous mascot, a fun-loving golden cow. While we waited a short five minutes or so for our food to be prepared, we wandered the restaurant in search of the full Mooby’s experience. We found even more Mooby’s signage, a merch table (where I picked up a sticker for my laptop) and a large banner adorned with Mooby’s slogan, “I’m Eating It.” When my name was called over the intercom (just like in the movies!), we picked up our Mooby’s bags and draft beers and found a table. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from the food. I wasn’t there for the food. I was there to pretend I Beer and a burger at Mooby’s, the had enough talent to appear as Kevin Smith pop-up in Louisville, open a background actor in one of through Aug. 10. Smith’s films. ART ON THE ROAD: VAN GOGH AT THE LUME IN INDIANAPOLIS By Erica Rucker | erucker@leoweekly.com

LEO doesn’t often delve into out-of-state stories but occasionally something happens close enough to Louisville that it would be a disservice not to tell our readers. This is one of those things. A Van Gogh exhibit opened on July 27 at the new LUME in Indianapolis at Newfields in late July. Newfields is the name for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This exhibit, along with Indy’s vibrant and growing downtown make this worthy of a weekend excursion. We visited the museum for the LUME and stayed at one of the newer hotels in the city, Bottleworks, to add to the experience.

THE VAN GOGH EXHIBIT AT THE LUME AT NEWFIELD’S

The exhibit features 30,000-square feet of immersive galleries that offer the audience a new way to look at artwork through cutting-edge projection technology. THE LUME is an experience for the senses and the Van Gogh exhibit is one that should not be missed. It is well worth the drive to Indianapolis. THE LUME was created by Grande Experiences from Australia and will be a permanent part of the Newfields museum. The 150 projectors that power the LUME offer guests the ability to exist inside the art. The Van Gogh presentation lasts about 40 minutes of THE LUME’s 60 minute production. The content features about 30 of his works, writings by Van Gogh and music. About 20 minutes of the exhibit is reserved for short stories called featurettes. The featurettes are each about 5 minutes and share the work of contemporary artists who are inspired by the work of Van Gogh. Upon entering the museum, you are directed to the third floor. We were given a guide to the exhibit during the media day and escorted to the meeting space just outside the exhibit. The first thing we were told is that the exhibit was a 360 degree experience. We would enter the hall on one side and come out the opposite side where there was a gift shop full of Van Gogh-inspired souvenirs. The first room of the exhibit is expansive — you are surrounded on all sides and below by the works of Van Gogh. The size of the images is impressive but it is the animation, the music, even the scent of the area that gives THE LUME it’s effect. THE LUME is more than a theater, it is a digital experience where the user is put in the

38

movement of the artists’ work. Walking into the Van Gogh exhibit, one is surrounded by his landscapes, his studies of flowers and other cultures. It feels as a viewer that you move with the strokes of Van Gogh’s brush. And when it is time for the Starry Night to begin, one of Van Gogh’s most famous works, someone will alert the guests. The experience is unique in that it brings art to life in a way that staring at a painting does not. It allows people of differing knowledge levels and ability levels to experience the works. “This is a way that they can consume art that is a little more accepting,” said Jon Berger, deputy director for marketing and external affairs. Berger said that it took about five years of work to complete THE LUME exhibit. Particularly during the early days of the pandemic, supply chain issues were a hurdle. “I’ve said this before, and I’ll probably say it again throughout, that if we can get people to do a deeper dive into Vincent Van Gogh or any of the other artists we have in this museum then I think we’ve made good on our promise as one of Indiana’s best cultural institutions,” said Berger. The ticket for THE LUME includes admission to the rest of the museum. So be prepared to spend a few hours looking at their contemporary collections and strolling the beautifully landscaped grounds of the museum. For the Van Gogh exhibit, the gardens were planted heavily with bright yellow and orange sunflowers, cone flowers and other bright flowers in the same family to pay homage to the colors and vibrancy of Van Gogh’s floral paintings. In the midst of the Van Gogh exhibit, there is a cafe with adult beverages and a menu that compliments the show. Guests with kids will want to visit the Gogh Play portion of the exhibit where guests can experience the “Van Gogh yourself” selfie wall and an interactive Van Gogh painting. In the next room, the museum’s original Van Gogh painting is hung alongside two of his contemporaries, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. This is a way to put his work into the correct temporal context. Tickets for THE LUME’s Van Gogh exhibit are available via the website: discovernewfields. org/checkout. Tickets to the show are $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Some Speed Museum

WHERE TO STAY:

If you plan to make it an excursion, we stayed in the Bottleworks District at the Bottleworks Hotel and loved it. I mention this not to sell the hotel but because the hotel is unique. It is a converted Coca-Cola factory — with enormous rooms all at 500-square feet or above and only three floors of rooms. It makes up part

of an entertainment complex built from the other factory buildings. Without really leaving the complex, it is possible to eat (see The Garage Food Hall), go bowling and have a drink (Pins Mechanical Company) and see a film (the Living Room) in the space of walking a few hundred feet in each direction. Location-wise, it is great. The rooms’ size and amenities make it perfect for a romantic getaway or one for families. Seriously. I can’t wait to get back. •

‘Dark Blood’ No. 1 Writer LaToya Morgan Illustrator Walt Barna Review by Felix Cornell

Avery Aldridge is a family man and decorated vet, as well as a Black man living in 1950s Alabama. He’s simply trying to make a living to support his family, but a run in with a violent and racist white man in a dark alley will lead to a dramatic unfolding of events that will seemingly change his life forever. The first issue of “Dark Blood” gives you a simple plot, but adds in just enough details to let you know that something else is going on. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Avery was a pilot during WWII, but 10 years later he is working at a diner in the Southern United States and supporting a family. So what is “The Variance” that is referenced throughout? What are the strange powers that Avery Aldridge possesses? Just what exactly are the flashbacks trying

“Mamo” starts out innocently with a girl, Jo, riding a bike through a beautifully illustrated landscape. Soon though, we find out that she is on a search for a witch. She finds a green Jeep in a clearing with a young girl inside reading. She inquires about whether or not the girl, Orla, is the witch. After some back and forth, it seems that Orla is a witch, but maybe not the witch. Eventually, Jo persuades Orla to help her. Jo is trying to find someone to help her mother who’s been asleep for months. Jo also has two sisters to look after. When the two come into the town, it looks as if Orla may not be welcome. Once inside Jo’s house, things swirl into a greater mystery as Orla realizes she may know exactly who is causing the family’s problems. Pretty quickly this book turns its storyline towards the horror genre. It’s warm art style is a little misleading as I’m sure was intended. Sas Milledge is an Australian writer and illustrator pulling double duty on the book, and while lovely to look at, the art is hiding a bit of an unsettling story that may keep us awake at night.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF PHOTOGRAPHER BUD DORSEY (1941-2021) Photos by Bud Dorsey (provided to LEO courtesy of the Louisville Story Program) LOUISVILLE photographer and avid documentarian of Black life in the city, Charles ‘Bud’ Ford Dorsey Jr., passed away Thursday, July 8 surrounded by his family. Born in 1941, Dorsey was given his first camera by his uncle John Dorsey as a child. Dorsey was the lens for many important and life-changing events and celebrations in the city of Louisville. LEO wanted to celebrate his gift to Louisville through a brief selection of his work. Thankfully, through his work with the Louisville Story Program, we are able to share these photographs from Dorsey’s 2017 book, “Available Light.”

Abe If you’re a Coonhound lover, Abe is your man! This hunk of love weighs

nearly 70 pounds and is searching for a home suitable for a big, active boy like himself! Abe is mostly, if not all, Redbone Coonhound. He came to the Kentucky Humane Society from an overcrowded shelter. Like a typical hound, five-year-old Abe is prone to sniffing, exploring, barking and jumping. If there’s tomfoolery to be found, count Abe in! Unsurprisingly, Abe has shown fixation with small animals like cats. His new home would need to be free of any petite creatures, and he should meet any small dogs to make sure they are compatible. If you’ve been looking for a loyal, friendly pooch to join your life - your search is over! Abe is neutered, micro-chipped and upto-date on his shots. Come meet him today at the East Campus, 1000 Lyndon Lane or learn more at kyhumane.org/dogs.

Daphne Are you looking for a real angel? Well, all Daphne’s missing is a pair

of wings! This two-year-old Shorthair is a sweetheart to all she meets. Daphne is a petite gal and was transferred to the Kentucky Humane Society when a rural shelter ran out of space. Daphne came to us very pregnant! This poor kitty also had “cauliflower ears” from previous ear infections, which is why her ears fold over. We also found out she had Feline Immunodeficiency Virus - or FIV. This just means Daphne’s immune system isn’t as strong as a typical cat’s. Because of these things, Daphne spent some time in a foster home to stay safe and healthy during her pregnancy. Her foster family said Daphne was a perfect cat during her stay: gentle, sensitive, and loving! Sadly, despite Daphne’s best instincts and care, her kittens unexpectedly passed away. We’re very sad for Daphne, but we know there’s someone special out there who can give her the happy ending she needs. She’s been nothing but kind and welcoming to the humans around her. She’ll stay near when she wants attention or back scratches but let you have your space if you want to be alone. If you’re looking for a loving friend to join your life, consider giving Daphne a home! She is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on her shots. Come meet her today at the East Campus, 1000 Lyndon Lane, or learn more at kyhumane.org/cats.

SAVAGE LOVE

By Dan Savage | mail@savagelove.net @fakedansavage

MUM AND DAD

Q: I’m a 24-year-old gay man with a 31-year-old bi boyfriend. I’ve known since we got together that he’s a lot more sexually experienced than I am, but it’s never been a big deal before now. This weekend, he met my parents for what we thought would be the first time. But it turns out that ten years ago, during his “big bi slut phase” (his words), they had a threesome. I recognize that no one did anything wrong—they were three consenting adults—and it’s not like anyone could’ve known that he and I would get together in the future. But also, my boyfriend fucked my parents! I’m mortified, he’s mortified, they’re mortified, and I may never be able to look at my parents again. Please help us find a way to move past this! I Knew He Was Into Blonds A: I’ve been writing Savage Love for almost thirty years—it’ll be thirty years this September—and I rarely get letters that surprise me anymore. But after reading your letter today… and then laying in a dark room with a cool washcloth over my eyes for six hours… I came to a few of realizations. First, I can still be surprised. Thank you for that. Second, if couples in their forties with teenage children at home are gonna have threesomes with guys in their twenties—and some are—there will always be a hard-toquantify-but-nevertheless-ineliminable risk that their children, once grown, could wind up meeting and fucking and even falling in love one of the guys their parents had a threesome with back in the day. Third, since I helped create a world where fortysomething couples with kids sometimes have MMF threesomes with twenty-something bisexual dudes, IKHWIB, this is all my fault oh my God what have I done can you ever forgive me. With that said, IKHWIB, do you know who I think should weigh in on this? The former mayor of Minneapolis. “If they’ve been able to laugh about this, that’s a good sign,” said Betsy Hodges, who was the mayor of Minneapolis from 2014 to 2018. “It might be a while before he can look at his boyfriend and not think about his parents having sex. That’s a tough thing to navigate, but laughter helps.” It may seem kind of random that the former mayor of Minneapolis is giving you sex

advice, IKHWIB, but Hodges reached to me after I posted your letter to Twitter, where I told my followers—the former mayor of Minneapolis among them—that I was going to run your letter in my column even though I didn’t have the faintest idea what to tell you. Betsy Hodges, on the other hand, knew exactly what to say. “He has to ask himself if the boyfriend is worth it,” said Hodges. “Everything really depends on the strength of their connection—which will have to be weighed against whatever tension now exists between IKHWIB, his boyfriend, and his parents. Can they navigate that tension? If any of them feel bad (as opposed to mortified) about what happened and they aren’t motivated to work through this and don’t have the tools for doing so, this will go sideways.” The Honorable Betsy Hodges suggests that the four of you have a conversation about what happened and how you want to handle things going forward. “Having that conversation—which I know sounds dreadful—could actually help them think about this less,” said Hodges, “especially if they get to a point where they can laugh about the insanity and awkwardness of the situation they’ve all found themselves in.” You can laugh about this until you pass out, IKHWIB, but if you can’t suck your boyfriend’s cock without thinking about your dad sucking your boyfriend’s cock, you may not be able to get past this. If you can’t look at your mom without thinking about her sitting on your boyfriend’s face, you might not be able to get past this. If you can’t take your boyfriend’s load without thinking about the load he dropped in dad or your mom or both (21-year-olds have great stamina and such short refractory periods), you might not be able to get past this. You might be able to, like Hodges said, think about this less. While I’m doubtful there’s a memory hole out there big enough to stuff this in and tight enough to prevent it from falling right back out, IKHWIB, perhaps your parents have already shown you how it’s done. I know when I came out to my mom, IKHWIB, she had a really hard time being around any guy I was dating due to the unwelcome mental images that plagued her when she saw me with a boyfriend. She could look at my sister and her boyfriend without picturing

her little girl sucking that boy’s cock, but she somehow couldn’t look at my boyfriend without picturing that brute sodomizing her little boy. It took some very awkward conversations, some raised voices, and, yes, some laughter before my mom successfully willed herself to stop conjuring up mental images of me getting my ass fucked. Maybe with some time, some awkward conversations, and a little laughter you’ll be able to purge all those unwelcome mental images of

your boyfriend railing your parents from your mind too. I guess my point is, if gay and straight kids can pretend not to know what they damn well do know, i.e., that their grown children are sexually active adults now, and if they can learn not to torture themselves with unwelcome mental images of our partners fucking the shit out of us, IKHWIB, seems to me that we should be able to do the same for them: recognize that our parents are sexual beings and at the same time expunge all unwelcome mental images from our minds. Yours is a much heavier lift than most, I realize, but if your boyfriend is worth it, IKHWIB, you at least gotta try. P.S. Perhaps this verse by poet Philip Larkin will help put things in perspective… They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. You’re not the first person whose parents… well, let’s not say your parents fucked you up. Instead let’s say you’re not the first person whose parents were a little extra. Good luck.

Follow Betsy Hodges on Twitter @ BetsyHodges. Q: I’m a woman in her twenties in a relationship. I have a great connection with my partner, we communicate well, and the sex is the best in my life. There’s only one thing getting in the way: My partner and I started going out six months ago, immediately after the end of a relatively short but very intense relationship. I was with my previous partner for about a year. We were deeply in love but eventually broke up because he moved to

another country. While I love my current partner and want him in my life, I am finding it hard to commit. I think what’s holding me back is not having the time to process the end of my previous relationship. I feel as my ex still takes up space in my heart and this prevents me from fully letting my new partner in. I want to let go of the thought of my ex (we haven’t even spoken in half a year) and open fully up to my new partner, but it’s been difficult because the story with my ex feels unfinished. What do I do? Worried Hasty And Confused Klutz A: You may always feel regret about your previous partner since it ended for reasons outside either of your control and his—and just for the record, there’s no guarantee you won’t feel some regret about your current partner, if your new relationship ends, which it might. (I mean, it’s only been six months. A little soon to be tossing “partner” around, if you ask me, which you did.) But did your last relationship really end for reasons neither you nor your ex could control? If he had no choice but to move to another country and/or if there was no way for you to go with him, okay, then the end was outside your control and his. But if he could’ve stayed and chose not to, WHACK, or if you could’ve gone with him and chose not to,

ETC.

well, then it didn’t end due to circumstance outside your control. Focusing on that— reminding yourself that an active choice was made to finish that relationship off—might help you get past the somewhat paralyzing degree of regret you currently feel. And if that doesn’t work, WHACK, perhaps a little more the best sex you’ve ever had will do the trick. Sir, I read that you had covid (now you know how having 49 years of surviving CNS DiseaseS has been like! As a cat I've 3 lives left) & almost died & are spreading the word. BTW Ivermectin needs to be in everybody's medicine cabinet vs. Vax. After covid on FB. Does ivermectin beat lambda lambda chi? Hope... It hurts that I'll never be your “daughter.” I was hoping that we've had enough of "Mean ‘Ol Mr. Tooth Decay" "don't use Novocain" vs "Jr Decay?" It's not fair how things transpired in our lives. How you felt when YOU lost a client. Like the way I lost my mom& you being unforgiving being 1 fucking hour late. Mom was puking up green shit I'm sure you're familiar with NOW. We didn't have a ride (like we'd ever call YOU for help as teens) and after agreeing “you hate for looking like my mother” (she was the most beautiful woman living on the right side of the tracks getting the fuck out of Danville. YOU bred me this way like a fucking horse. I look like ME but you always saw HER. I'll never figure out what she did to instigate so much hatred but she told me when I was 2 I heard a PSA on battered women and said, "Mommy that sounds like you!" (Should I mention that car?) I had finally had enough of your shit & said, “fuck you.” I think I'm the only man who's ever been brave enough to say it. To your face.

boiling & I needed help & I could never ask you for help. You sicked the FBI on me that *. I guess “never let him know how you feel”also pertained to you. I was too scared to even ask you for help w/Math & had to figure it all out on my own. All of my education you did not help. Mom helped. Not EWE. I had to come up with a way to pay for college by myself because you wouldn't pay for it. I had to hear, “your father won a million dollars!” The night BEFORE my final exam @ Moscow State U. I failed. I didn't “ONLY call” you when I needed $. I called to make you your 1st website but I was always an urchin. THAT'S how YOU raised all of US except your “step daughter” because I'll never forget the night before her father's arraignment & you did something you RARELY did. Take a call during dinner. How you couldn't wait to put him away for his crimes along w/other BS W/the prosecutor. And Lisa wasn't complicit? When I was homeless and needed you the most before my 2nd brain surgery you were all about helping so many other women and just letting me fend for myself. "You hurt my wife so fuuuuuccckkk yoooouuuuu. I hated you for looking like your mother."

Whenever I ask a soldier if they would, “like to have been raised by a drill sergeant” they say no I could not imagine. But I'm a warrior.

I started a brain tumor foundation because I didn't want to feel so lonely anymore & THAT has been a nightmare. All the times I needed the dad that read “bubby the airplane” but only for a month after you got custody. Like our horse. Like "our" TV.

Being a single not my major dad & taking us away from mom vs sharing us we could still be a fam VS being albatrosses. I wish I'd never’ve gone through “parent's alienation syndrome”. (Unlike deprogramming from cults they don't deprogram you from toxic parents) Which you use because you're the expert!!! Us being the victims of your assaults.

I don't NEED YOU in my life but perhaps you can FINALLY forgive me for all the wrongs I did to hurt you as a child. I know I was the worst. I got all the blame. I WASN'T JUST ANY CHILD BUT YOURS. You fucking raised me to be a Clay. How in the FUCK did you think I would turn out after all your betrayals? You killed the sweet inside me.

I'd like to think you learned compassion for us when the “love of your life” died. The 2nd time. You deny I'm YOUR daughter and had a girl that was 3 years older that you were fucking tell me. YOU can't get a perfect bone marrow match if you're not sibs. You would have known that had you been there to Anne's "meet and greet" on leukemia but work was more impotent. Always more impotent.

But what you did do was give me the permission to use my cunt & taught me 1 might NOT be “the 1.” I only wish upon the same star I did as a child to “go live with ypur fucking mother” that you could be a father to your grand child since his father's succeeded in “murdering himself.”

Darth I AM your son. That's how you raised me. 2x the Tomboy. The 1 you said, “couldn't pass on the family name.” So in true Clay fashion I had a bastard son to fulfill YOUR DYNASTY. As for Jr he didn't come out until you threw him away for doing exactly what you did. Ted Bickel was the one that comfort me once you threw me out. He was there because he was smart and on scholarship and hated YOU. It didn't take anything else to tell me what a prick you were because mother told me you daddy paid for your poker degree. And why did he wait? Fred Partin. Your "daughter" can be gay but not your son. I reckon she's also 2x the tomboy too. Lisa assaulted me. 1st. She slammed my fingers in the door. 1st & I was just trying to get away from a situation that didn't involve ME. RIGHT AFTER BRAIN SURGERY (The only fucking time I ever saw you and Mom not argue it took me having brain surgery. The 2 of you staring at me was the happiest day of my 18th year. Just waking up period. To see you both FORCED to tolerate 1 another brings tears to my eyes. Aunt Betsy said you were "so worried about me" yet you never showed it. Except the day before when you took me to Cunningham's and we ate in an old whorehouse stall where only black people served food. RIP Cunningham's. When I was in the hospital the 1st time for a week you weren't there. Much easier to work than deal with emotions. You didn't get me a "congrats! You survived brain surgery!" gift like my aunt. "Never let them know how you feel" was the biggest crock of shit advice you ever gave me. Everybody knows how I fucking feel God dammit. (I speak how I was spoken to and brain damaged cemented it). YOU didn't understand what I went through after.(Flicking your head.) Surgery was just the beginning of my nightmare. I didn't try killing myself for your attention. I did it because I was in so much pain. I've never been angrier then when I woke up. Yet another reason to hate me more. But this was like the x you took me to a gyn instead just asking me if I'd been molested. I wanted to die because aging with it sucked already a year later. I couldn't DREAM of how much worse it was going to get. MS only sprinkles. Syringomyelia... I love how it slips off your tongue. A cyst that slowly expands your spinal cord inside. pain is... So choice. I wish I'd gotten it right the 1st x when I was I was 13. Then you could have boo hooed over your dead daughter dying on YOUR couch. Your coke dealer client that moved in behind us daughter convinced me to down a bottle of aspirin and SOMS then call CPS when I missed 3 days and one of the students reported me. I only wish you understood what it's like to die a slow and agonizing death from the time you're 17. INSTEAD you were 75! When I tried to murder myself Mom screamed, "if I have ovarian cancer and I have to live with it then you have to live with your brain tumor" chemo brain not computing BRAIN TUMOR FOR LIFE. Cassius asked me to live out my natural life. As if. Last time I saw my dad was in the Looney band. "We've got to do something about this." When I was 15 I looked at him and said,, "dad I get the feeling you hate me because I look like mom” "Yeah you're right." so we looked at Dr Tucker for the next 40 minutes and I never got mental health checkups again. They made sure to lock me up w/super crazies so I'd never do it again. The only 3 x you SAW ME was busting me into a bar when I was 11 to eat, @ Cunninghams & making us go see “9 to 5.” Learning how to be an empowered woman VS just secretaries ALONG w/S&M. (Kiss finger blow) You didn't play chess with"the girls” nor racquetball. Just w/the son who you *thought* could give you a son & never came out to you out of fear. Fred Partin. Let me tell you how having 18 different orgasms makes it so much better to be a woman. Had you never told me @ 17, “if I had me one of those (pointing to my cunt) I'd use it to no avail.” that data on orgasms wouldn't exist today. So TY. Women around the world TY. I am my generation’s Helen Reddy. OneOpinionatedBitch.Com.You never think of who did that but we're all pioneers. Every Clay not just daddy. I wrote the first article on female ejaculation in 1997 OneOpinionatedBitch.Com/I/love/sex and have learned so much more the last 20 years. I've had my hands in way more pussy than you. Billions at this point I surmise. YOU raised a Warrior. I didn't need the army like you did ( if mom hadn't made you unless you would have gone to Vietnam and probably be dead. No you're too mean to die). I had structure. Your loving sufficed & was simply a playground for how I suffered from the father of YOUR amazing Cassius. YOUR Cassius. When I last contacted you my brain was

You don't ever give ME a chance. You didn't call me on my 16th. Only 18th & I STILL have that “Magic Noir” because you finally saw ME. I FINALLY got a better present than your fuck buddies. I couldn't help my brain damaged reactions + Clayitis & I didn't get credit for ever being THAT way. I just wish you could let it all go because I will if you will because holding grudges against all of us did nobody any favors except you you finally got to concentrate on your career once we were no longer a burden. We weren't your children anymore because we chose to live with our dying mother even as adults trying to approach you after throwing us away like we were garbage and I have your GRANDSON? YOU WANTED HIM since “girls can't pass on the family name” and you don't get “world's best Grandpa” Mugs or tshirts. Add those to your Mercedes collection. I've done my best to raise him All by my crippled self HE deserves all the respect that you get your step “daughter.” Even more since he's the one that passes on the Clay name and YOUR God damn Dynasty. I'm YOUR son. Twice. I'll always love you through the “dark side of the moon” because I LIVED THAT part of your life WITH you and try to find the few degraded Silver Linings I can. I wish you'd accept my love. An admiral told me, “they're talking about your book at every port I go to.“ "DDD Vol II Tales of the Uncontrollable Cunt" funny thing was I was trying to get out of an abusive relationship & Amazon didn't pay me anything so I was stuck and almost died 2 or 3 more x. Plus figuring out he raped me for 8 years in my sleep keeping me fucked up to feed his addiction but after I had sepsis from him fucking the shunt out of my spine that lead to 3 more surgeries I finally popped him raping me. Then the Outlaws threw a big “GET THE FUCK out of our lives” *Celebration* on Derby just to hurt me only it was them and not me to get the fuck out of Cassius’ life because if there's one thing you both taught me is how to fight for custody. I was FINALLY dxed w/EDS so after 17 years I'm off fentanyl. You have no idea what it was like to have such a powerful mind bending drugs so a Dr almost killed me keeping me on 8g of fentanyl a day because he raped me. I honestly have no idea how I am still walking. I'm finishing up “101 Shades of Clay,” SIR (since “50 Shades” are so banal. Originally there were 101 Shades of Grey on a computer screen. Throwing popcorn up & catching it). “write what you know.” sitting on table blowing bubbles switching swinging legs ;) Are you going to stay "Mean 'ol Mr tooth decay" or do I let MY TRUTH (since there's only 1 liar in the equation of your "fatherhood" since you beat the truth into me. A Clay family violence you can read in "The Life of Cassius Marcellus Clay...") so the whole world can make up their own minds what to think of you? Or does giving your grandson a hand me down Mercedes since he just turned 16 sounds like a plan to get us somewhere? A '99 Sienna isn't quite as safe but I doubt I can afford the insurance cuz I'm trying to invest in his future and live on $2300 a month. You wipe your ass with that a day. You can at least forgive HIM & Lance for existing. He's promised to donate sperm but has 0 desire for his own but is willing to take some other drug addicts child. I don't blame him. I certainly never wanted to put a child in the position I was put in, kill my Jr, and I never wanted to be a single brain damaged “I live to see which new disease I can conquer this year(pancreatitis)!!!“ mother. I never wanted to be a MOFO missing her MOJO but here I am still fighting for my life so that my children can have 1. I won't let them publish “DearDementedDiary.Com Vol I Life Cycles” because my publisher fucked me so people are selling it for almost 1k used and unsigned. How many other 50-year-old writers can say that ? I'm glad I have the last 940 books under my bed ready to be signed and sold. Cassius thinks 1.5k is asking too much but what does he know? He has absolutely no idea what it mean to be a Clay outside of me telling him he would be a prince if we lived in Kentucky. To the moon, Alice. I'll love you always and forever. It's up to you how the world will see you once "101 Shades" is published and not just Louisvillians sucking your cock because they won't respect you if you don't kiss and make up. With all of us. No... Just "the girls." You can at least make it up Anne & i. You decimated her childhood and she never felt wanted. Big surprise. And what did you do for her when she was raped? What you always done. Nothing Catherine Elizabeth Clay DearDementedDiary.
