Ploegsma Publishers
Leopold was founded in 1923 and evolved into a children’s- and young-adult publishing house in the 1950’s. From baby books to books for young adults, from poetry to exceptional non-fiction, Leopold publishes for all ages. Leopold has a lot of collaborations with museums, different organizations and the government. The first children’s book ever published is still in print: Johan Fabricius’ Java Ho! The Adventures of Four Boys Amid Fire, Storm, and Shipwreck. Leopold hosts a lot of famous Dutch authors, for example the classic works of Tonke Dragt (The Letter for the King, The Secrets of the Wild Wood). Several popular brands are also published by Leopold, like Frog (Max Velthuijs) and Alfie the Werewolf (Paul van Loon). The beautiful Leopold picture books by renowned illustrators like Annemarie van Haeringen, Wouter van Reek and Ingrid Godon are taking a flight due to the fantastic teamwork with museums. Not only classic authors and popular brands are a big part of Leopold. A younger generation of authors and illustrators is building a vast oeuvre. Books like Zeb. (Gideon Samson & Joren Joshua) and Fright Night (Maren Stoffels) shake up the world of children’s literature.
Witte Leeuw Publishing house Witte Leeuw publishes trendy and cheerful books for children from 0 to 12 years old. From the books about Bear and Mouse by Pauline Baartmans and other cosy stories to read aloud, to the intriguing books about space and spacetravel by astronaut André Kuipers, Witte Leeuw has a book for everybody. Fiction as well as non-fiction books are published by Witte Leeuw. Examples of the latter are for instance practical photo- and notebooks, touch and feel books like Sweet Cuddles by Happy Horse, and sparkling friend-albums like the Bucketlist for Besties.
For well over a hundred years Ploegsma has been part of the Dutch publishing scene. The publishing house was founded in 1905 by Johannes Ploegsma and has been specialising in children’s books since the 1960’s: adventurous and humorous fiction and non-fiction books for children of all ages. These include many classic titles, such as the books by Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking) and Arnold Lobel (Frog and Toad), as well as books by contemporary and very popular authors like Mirjam Oldenhave (Mister Twister), Marjon Hoffman (Rosie’s Rules), Yvon Jaspers (Tess and Tommy), Reggie Naus (The Pirates Down the Street), Vivian den Hollander, Janny van der Molen and Caja Cazemier. Many of these authors have been translated. Even though a lot has changed in the last hundred years, Ploegsma’s love for beautiful books has not!
Condor Publishing house Condor mainly publishes funny and contemporary books for children from 7 to 12 years old. At Condor, you’ll find international bestselling authors like Dav Pilkey, Sue Townsend and Jason Reynolds, as well as some fascinating titles from the Netherlands itself. Non-fiction books about subjects such as LEGO, football and other sports are also well represented.

Job van Gelder Later I Want To Be Little
Illustrator Job van Gelder makes his debut as an author with this delightful picture book that goes perfectly with the theme of this year’s Children’s Book Week in the Netherlands. Daydreaming about your future has never been such fun! What do you want to be when you grow up? The kids in this book know. The bicycle mechanic’s daughter, for instance, wants to be a tinkerer. One boy dreams of a career as an astronaut and builds a rocket that can take his whole family to outer space. Yet another boy is an aspiring young archaeologist with his very own treasure-digger…
Picture book | 22 x 28 cm | 40 pages | August 2021
As an illustrator Job van Gelder has created work for the visual arts and poetry publisher Plint and the Efteling fantasy-theme park. He has illustrated picture books for authors including Mark Haayema and Bette Westera, as well as contributed drawings to the World Atlas of Football (Condor, 2016). Paul de Moor Kaatje Vermeire Blanca There’s a vast snowy place, somewhere… Lovely illustrated story for young and old about isolation and dreams. With a poetic text by Paul de Moor and enchanted drawings by Kaatje Vermeire.
Picture book | 17.3 x 24.6 cm | 64 pages | March 2021
There’s a vast snowy place, somewhere… Surrounded by a vast white sea. In the vast white landscape stands a big white house…
About the creators: Paul de Moor writes children’s and young adult books: about artists, exploration and life. In late 2016 he was told he had a terminal disease. He decided to become friends with his hostile cells. By telling them his stories. By taking them for bicycle rides and laying bare the terribly beautiful world. By showing them that in ugliness there is also beauty. By pointing out the array of colours between white and black. By embracing beauty hand-in-hand. By… yes, comforting them as well.
Blanca is inside, playing in her safe, white room. At night, she dreams. Her small world gets bigger, and bigger… And then Blanca is once again herself.
Kaatje Vermeire has illustrated many picture books, including her most recent work In Monet’s Garden to accompanying the exhibition Monet: The Garden Paintings at the Kunstmuseum in The Hague. Other books illustrated by her have been translated into several languages.

HEB JE BUITENAARDS LEVEN GEZIEN?
Together, André and Sander formed Space Academy. With their own theatre show, a museum attraction, books, videos and stories they transport young and old on fantastic journeys of discovery through space.
Ik ben op mijn ruimtereis geen aliens tegengekomen. Maar ik heb wel een keer een ufo gezien.

ZIJN ASTRONAUTEN SUPERHELDEN? Eens even kijken.
Perry Rhodan vroeger mijn superheld was? Door deze scienceficionboekjes kwam ik op het idee om astronaut te worden.
Ho, wacht even!

Martine Letterie Rick de Haas Why the Moon Disappears
It is 1942. Lotti lives in the Dutch East Indies when Japan occupies the country. Lotti and her mother are forced to go to an internment camp. Lotti loses everything: her house, her baboe (babysitter), her puppy. But nobody can take away the beautiful stories her dear baboe once told her. They are etched in Lotti’s memory and give her the courage and inspiration to survive. Martine Letterie based Why the Moon Disappears on the experiences of survivors. Among others, she spoke with the acclaimed Dutch author Tonke Dragt about her childhood memories. Like the highly praised Children with a Star and Forbidden to Fly, Letterie describes war through the eyes of a child, along with the resilience children have to find a ray of hope even in the most difficult of situations.

Tonke Dragt Secrets of the Wild Wood
Ristridin the knight walked slowly on. The snow creaked beneath his feet and now and then he heard the snap of small branches. Otherwise, it was silent. He felt like a traveller in the Realm of the Dead. This was the Wild Wood, where Dagonaut was king, even though he had never set foot there and had no idea of the secrets it hid. ‘And what about me?’ thought Ristridin. ‘I have unravelled those secrets, but will I ever get out of here alive to tell anyone what I know?’ When Ristridin does not return to his castle, Tiuri the knight and his friend Piak go out in search of him. Strange tales are told about the Wild Wood: of bandits and woodland spirits, of ruins and winding paths that lead you astray, and of the mysterious Men in Green...

Wouter Klootwijk Irene Goede The Wind Shows the Way
‘What’s your name?’ the boy asks. ‘Just give me a name, then I’ll know what it is,’ says the girl. The boy gazes at the water. And he suddenly says, ‘Your name is Vera.’ ‘All right,’ replies the girl. Jan and Vera find each other in a world where something terrible has happened. But they don’t know precisely what. There is no more oil, no electricity, and no parents to be seen anywhere. A unique story about trusting in nature and one another: if you want to get to the other side, you build a raft and let the wind show you the way. If it’s raining, you make a roof. If you’re hungry, you eat the cherries that grow on the trees. But winter is on its way…

Joël Broekaert Marieke van Ditshuizen From Honey Bee to Chocolate Chips About all the goodness we get from plants With all the readymade foods we have, we hardly think about the fact that there’s a lot of food we can simply pluck off a tree or bush. The raw materials for products we use daily, like chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla, also come straight from nature. Did you know that cinnamon is actually the bark of a tree? From Honey Bee to Chocolate Chips takes us to the origin of our daily food: the plant. From seed to germ, via stem and leaf, ultimately to a flowering and fruit bearing plant. And let’s not forget the roots, tubers and bulbs. The cycle is complete when we go back into the soil to find fungi.
Non-fiction | 21 x 25 cm | 128 pages | March 2021
Marieke van Ditshuizen used a unique technique to create the art work for this book: she made every image three times, in the three basic printing colours, which she then positioned on top of each other in different degrees of transparency. The effect is stunning. Joël Broekaert is a food journalist and restaurant critic, he writes books and makes tv-programmes about food. He is fascinated by the fact that we eat everything in the cycle of the plant, from seed to fungus.

Rindert Kromhout My Father’s Name
Returning to a homeland, which no longer exists. In 1945 Klaus Mann travels, as a journalist, through post-war Europe back to his homeland Germany for the first time in years. He wonders how his county and fellow citizens have fared. What has changed due to the war? And he reflects on how he himself has changed because of everything that’s happened.
Fiction | 14 x 21.3 cm | 256 pages | November 2020 About the Mann trilogy: ‘Fascinating coming-of-age novel about Klaus’s adulthood and struggle, set against the background of the first half of the 20th century. If anyone can convincingly depict the historical reality, it is Rindert Kromhout. Skilfully and carefully, he straddles the boundary between fiction and non-fiction.’ – daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad
Rindert Kromhout beautifully brings together history (the Second World War) and current affairs (refugees who no longer feel at home anywhere) in a compelling story, as seen through the eyes of the well-known writer Klaus Mann. Similar to his Charleston Trilogy, Kromhout brings a famous writer’s family to life. ◆

Imagine your next-door neighbours are pirates… And that they don’t live in an ordinary house, but in a kind of boat-shaped construction made from pieces of wreckage. They have a proper canon, which they actually fire for fun, and a guard shark swimming around their small moat. And they do everything the pirate way, because if there is anything the hate, it’s landlubber stuff. So the Blunderbusses are a proper pirate family. For years they used to sail the seven seas, but now they want to settle down. Captain Blunderbuss and his wife Betsy have a son: Billy. And then there is Grandpa Blunderbuss. He is the roughest pirate that ever lived, and people tell the wildest stories about him. Grandpa Blunderbuss is always thirsty, particularly for rum.
