Sita lives in Nepal, but not in the snowy Himalayas. The temperature in her hometown gets up to 42oc during the summer and holds to a steady 23 oc in winter. So, when Sita first had a rash and discoloured hands 5 years ago, she didn’t think much of it. “Just a seasonal allergy…” she mused.

But over the years the rashes persisted, and her hands were painful. Sita began to realise that something was very wrong. The fingers on her right hand were going numb. By the time she was diagnosed with leprosy, three fingers were clawed, and she felt pain in her leg as well. Thankfully, she was referred to The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Kathmandu and has been receiving treatment ever since. She’s returned there recently. She stays alone as her husband must work and take care of their large joint family back home.

“I don’t feel alone here in the hospital, just very cold,” Sita told us. “I exercise my hands every day and take medicines on time. I do feel

Sita was training to be a tailor and wanted to open a boutique. She says, “I love making dresses and working with fabrics. But life had other plans.”

Sita still hasn’t given up on her dreams, “I want to get better and return home and open that tailoring shop despite all this.” Therefore, good self-care to keep her fingers moving and flexible is very important.
