on their way to recovery
Sita lives in Nepal, but not in the snowy Himalayas. The temperature in her hometown gets up to 42oc during the summer and holds to a steady 23 oc in winter. So, when Sita first had a rash and discoloured hands 5 years ago, she didn’t think much of it. “Just a seasonal allergy…” she mused.
But over the years the rashes persisted, and her hands were painful. Sita began to realise that something was very wrong. The fingers on her right hand were going numb. By the time she was diagnosed with leprosy, three fingers were clawed, and she felt pain in her leg as well. Thankfully, she was referred to The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Kathmandu and has been receiving treatment ever since. She’s returned there recently. She stays alone as her husband must work and take care of their large joint family back home.
“I don’t feel alone here in the hospital, just very cold,” Sita told us. “I exercise my hands every day and take medicines on time. I do feel

much better than how I was 3-4 years ago.” She attends Self-Care Classes to learn important techniques she can use to regain mobility in her hands and prevent further impairment.
Sita was training to be a tailor and wanted to open a boutique. She says, “I love making dresses and working with fabrics. But life had other plans.”
Sita still hasn’t given up on her dreams, “I want to get better and return home and open that tailoring shop despite all this.” Therefore, good self-care to keep her fingers moving and flexible is very important.
While leprosy IS curable, the loss of hand and foot mobility can have devastating effects, but rehabilitation can help patients regain movement. ADD a Gift of Love Physiotherapy

International Programs Officer, Eva Lee, recently visited Nepal and dropped in on project participants to see how they were going with their new kids.
Biswopati and her husband, have two children. A son, and a daughter. But since she’s joined a Self-Help Group, through the IMPACT project, she’s been able to set up her own goat business. Now she has kids too!
With a smile like Biswopati’s [left], it’s hard to imagine Biswopati would upset anyone. She had a physical disability and her economic situation meant she and her family were squatting in an informal settlement. A needle injury at age six had left her blind in one eye. Before joining the group, others in her community frowned upon her due to her situation.
By participating in the group, Biswopati has learned and developed so much. It has given her the confidence to step out into her own venture, despite her disability. She’s undertaken lots of different training. From safe water, hygiene, and menstruation practises to financial matters and advanced communication skills. The IMPACT project supported her to start her own goat business. Now Biswopati is a board member of her cooperative. She’s often called upon to provide counselling to resolve conflicts in her community. These days, she is listened to and looked up to, rather looked down upon with

disdain. Community members now come to her for advice. What a long way she has come to obtaining the dignity and respect of her community.
Biswopati dreams have also grown quicker than her goats. She eventually wants to set up a shop selling designer clothing.
When Biswopati’s daughter was asked how she feels about her mum’s new goat business, she said that she likes having the goats. She said that the baby goats were particularly fun to play with!
You can provide another family in Nepal like Biswopati’s with a Gift of Love Goat for just $50 through this catalogue. It can supplement the family’s nutrition with milk or meat or be raised, bred, and sold for income.
One goat provides much needed milk and cheese for a family. With two or more goats and training in animal husbandry, a family can have a sustainable income.
Great for relieving stress, this room spray can help you restore your balance and clarity. Plastic bottle. 125ml.

Maria and Joe Bast are dedicated supporters of The Leprosy Mission… just like you.
“As volunteers you develop a real passion for The Leprosy Mission. We have been to India frequently and saw the real needs for several projects, who by Gods Grace, have been successful. One was a mobile clinic serving people in rural areas in need of medical attention.” – Maria and Joe Bast
The mobile van supported by Maria and Joe continues to provide self-care, rehabilitation services and community education to rural, remote villages in India. With a heart for people affected by Leprosy in India, they successfully raised funs to full equip this van. Since the start of the van, they have supported over 1500 people with leprosy in rural and hard to reach areas.

MESH secure orders and effectively trades the goods overseas for the artisans. They ensure prompt payment for goods at a fair price, so artisans have a consistent cash flow and working capital to continue production. Their aim is to ensure full time employment for artisans.
The money Renu currently earns from her activities is helping her family to meet their needs and contributes to her sisters’ studies. Both of her sisters are now studying in 11th grade. Praise God!

The must-have vegetarian cookbook for easy healthy recipes to cook at home. By gourmet vegetarian chef Natasha Corrett
“I love this necklace and have received compliments each time I have worn it.” - Anthea
Mina works at New SADLE (New Skill And Development Learning Experiences). A notfor-profit fair-trade organisation in Nepal that helps rehabilitate people affected by leprosy and provides training and employment. Many of the beautiful gift items for you to choose from this catalogue have been made by artisans like Mina.
Mina is happily married to Bishnu, the storekeeper at New SADLE. They have their own home on land that was supplied by the company. They live there together with their son, who is in grade one at school. Mina is also blessed with two older sons and a daughter from her late husband. (He used to work at New SADLE too.) Working in the tailoring department for over 20 years has really formed and underpinned Mina’s life for the better.
Since the age of 14, when Mina first contracted leprosy, she has found help and support through the affiliated leprosy organisations in and around Kathmandu. She left her village accompanied by a relative to The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban hospital to receive months of treatment. Finally, she was cured.
Thanks to the support of people like you, Mina also received surgery on her left-hand finger twice and toes from her right foot. Throughout the years she has needed to go to the hospital for medical checkups from time to time and continues to do so. It’s reassuring to know that the Anandaban hospital facilities are financed by Leprosy Mission supporters from across the world. The specialist care and support she needs is always there.
Mina started at New SADLE in 1999. There she found love and married her first husband. They had three children together. Recently their older son completed a 6-month course on ground handling at the airport and is now working there. Their daughter is studying for her bachelor’s degree. A number of years after her first husband’s passing, Mina then married Bishnu. They have since had a son together.
Mina is so proud of all her children and is so happy to be able to support them.
Thank you for supporting artisans affected by leprosy like Mina. You help them earn a dignified income and enable them to live a life in all its fullness. Your gifts give twice!
God bless you.
