Leprosy can be cured — and that was wonderful! But a cure doesn’t stop with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT). There are women like Hira, who face complications and severe reactions from leprosy. And their cure involves a lot more than simply taking medication.
Hira is a single mother. Her husband left to work in another country, and she hasn’t heard from him in 12 years. One of her sons is finishing up his schooling, but her other son had to drop out. She couldn’t afford to pay his tuition.
3 years ago, Hira thought she was having an allergic reaction.

Her face was patchy, her neck ached, and her appetite came and went strangely. After several misdiagnoses, the doctors finally diagnosed her with leprosy. She knew she would face discrimination. Hira just wanted to be able to do work, support her family, without having complications. But even after MDT, she is having leprosy reactions. Every time Hira left hospital, her leprosy reactions would get worse and she experienced lots of different symptoms from loss of appetite, to having a fever, vomiting, fainting, blisters and extreme pain. How Shoes Change the Life of Somebody like Bibek
Christmas Shoes
Leprosy can lead to a loss of feeling in the feet, and cause permanent damage. Your gift this Christmas will provide shoes to protect vulnerable feet.

Bibek was diagnosed with leprosy when he was just 15. Almost 25 years later, he is still living with the effects. Though he is now cured, he has a disability caused by having part of his foot removed. A simple pair of shoes could have changed his life.
When Bibek got married, he was scared of the stigma of leprosy. He hid his diagnosis from his wife. But the effects of leprosy cannot be unnoticed. Leprosy can target the nerves, especially in the hands and feet. As they lose sensation, it becomes easier to get injured, and not realise until it gets much much worse.
Bibek’s wife found out he had leprosy when he needed to go to hospital, because of a severe infected wound on his foot. She was frustrated he didn’t tell her at the start, but she was not afraid and stood by him.
The injury was so terrible that it could not be treated. It was festering and would not heal. The only option was to have the heel of his foot surgically removed, to stop the infection from spreading.
A simple pair of protective shoes could have saved Bibek from this injury. This is the kind of difference you can make in somebody’s life. Protection from a lifetime of disability.
When Bibek talked to us about his first diagnosis, he became terribly upset and cried.
“Although my family was supportive, my friends and community left me alone and did not want to associate with me.”
Bibek said. “I felt like I wanted to be alone and wanted to commit suicide because of the stigma I knew surrounding leprosy. However, my family and doctor told me that leprosy can be cured and encouraged me to persist. So I persisted and kept
going. I am so grateful for their support. If even my family had discriminated against me, I don’t know what I would have done.”
Thankfully, Bibek received surgery, a custom prosthesis, and a pair of shoes at a Leprosy Mission Hospital. Sadly, leprosy is still robbing young people of their futures when early diagnosis, treatment and a pair of shoes come too late. Alka lives with her husband and their son. When her son was a child, Alka and her husband worked on a farm. But for all the work they did, they didn’t earn much money. Alka struggled to
pay for her son to go to school. It was a very difficult time for her family.
Then Alka heard that Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT) was training workers nearby. She went along and learned how to cut and sew, making handmade products. It’s through this training that she was able to get a job with NLT, making the products you can buy this Christmas!
Now she enjoys coming to work in the workshop, sewing, cutting
and gluing. She feels a lot more confident now, and her financial stress is much lower. She is satisfied that she can support her family. Her son even has a bachelor’s degree now! Today, she is still working hard making beautiful artisanal items, like the ones you can see and buy here!

This gift funds the final stages of a person’s rehabilitation, training or prosthetic, giving them the gift of return to their regular lives and see their families again. Your contribution funds the full stay for one patient at the Self-Care Unit. | CODE: 14355 | $300
Bajrangi is staying in the selfcare unit at Anandaban Hospital right now. Though his leprosy is cured, the hospital he was treated at did not teach him proper self-care.
Because of this, he has returned to hospital again and again. With the support of people like you, Bajrangi can have the gift of Going Home.
27 years ago, Bajrangi was diagnosed with leprosy. The hospital diagnosed him, and gave him MDT. It cured him, but several years later, Bajrangi noticed that a wound in his leg refused to heal.
He went back to the hospital, again and again, over three years. But nobody thought that it might be linked to leprosy.
“I would go to the hospital. They would change my dressing and send me back home,” Bajrangi tells us. “I always thought, since I have finished my medication for leprosy, it should not cause any further problems.”
Bajrangi had no idea that there were complications that come even after being cured. The hospital hadn’t taught him how to care for himself properly. Thankfully, he went to an ulcer screening camp run by Leprosy Mission in Nepal. They brought him to the self-care unit.
At the Self-Care Unit, Bajrangi and others are taught how to prevent and take care of injuries. They can access physiotherapy and counselling. They can receive assistive tools to help their disability. They can also learn practical skills, like farming, cooking and cleaning.
This is what you can provide when you give the Gift of Going Home. This new Gift of Love funds one person’s entire stay at the Self-Care Unit. Everything they need to safely and smoothly reintegrate when they go home.
As his stay comes to an end, Bajrangi is excited to go back home. He enjoyed staying in the new Self-Care Unit (funded by people like you!), but he hopes that he will not need to come back to hospital again. He is excited about his Gift of Going Home.
