When Huma was a young girl, both her parents died tragically. Shunned by her community due to her ethnic background, Huma had not choice but struggle to find low paying, exploitative work to take care of her siblings. Can you imagine how hard life must have been?

A Cure is More Than a Cure
When Rubina was just a teenager, she noticed patches on her skin. Most of us know this as a clear sign of leprosy. Tragically, Rubina and her family did not know this. It wasn’t until a nasty ulcer opened on the sole of her foot that she went to see a doctor.
They didn’t know it was leprosy at first. She took medication for the ulcer, but Rubina’s condition got worse. Her face started to swell up. There was no pain — because the right side of her face became paralysed. Her lip drooped and her eye couldn’t close fully, and she felt scared and ashamed. She hid from her friends.
Rubina was so terrified that all she could do was cry, wondering why this was happening to her.
With no signs of improvement, Rubina went back to the hospital. Thankfully, a doctor there had been trained by the Nepal Leprosy Fellowship (supported by TLMA) and recognised that Rubina could have leprosy.
When she found out, Rubina was stressed. She had no idea if she could ever be cured. By the time she started her Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), she couldn’t even keep her shoes on her feet
when she walked. The nerves in her feet were affected so badly.

How Fairtrade Fashion Helped Change Mira’s Life
When you think of a farmer, you probably don’t imagine a teenage girl. But this was the reality for Mira. When her father died, she had to stop school and work on the family farm. Imagine those long days, and the hard physical labour that she had to do — all before she became an adult.
Eventually, Mira became married, and her husband came to help on the farm too. But just 15 days later, he fell down a hill while cutting grass. He was injured so horribly that he became paralysed from the waist down. Mira had to take on more responsibilities.
She had to take care of her aging mother, her siblings, and her husband. It’s hard to imagine how much pressure she felt.
When Mira took her husband for treatment, their lives changed. They were both recommended to Nepal Leprosy Trust (NLT). Through NLT, they were able to learn how to do stitching; a new skill that lead to new job opportunities! Now Mira and her husband make leather bags together at NLT. They both earn a fair and dignified income, and don’t have to do the exhausting physical labour anymore.

Planting Seeds of Hope for the Future
What was your life like at age 12? What did you dream of doing after growing up? In a lot of ways, your answers are probably like Disha’s. She’s a little girl like any other. She loves talking to her school friends about her favourite pop band. She wants to learn how to dance just like them. She loves her mum’s pani puri — but ones from a restaurant are better!
But what is different is that both of Disha’s parents have had leprosy. They met and fell in love at the hospital. After they had recovered from leprosy, they both wanted to work there, helping other people like them. Disha was born at Anandaban hospital, Nepal and has spent her whole life there.
Disha has grown up knowing that she doesn’t have to fear leprosy. It’s like any other disease — something that can be cured. She understands that serious complications come from lack of knowledge or self-care. She’s a seed of hope for the future we all want to see!
Now you can plant a seed of hope too — a Gift of Love! While you watch your seeds bloom and grow, you can know that the future is blooming too! Your seeds support the SEED project in Nepal — helping to support school supplies, tuition fees, uniforms to children like Dish, who are disadvantaged by leprosy.
