How Rajisha Regained Hope

Rajisha (18) should’ve been at home, getting ready to take her ﬁnal exams. Instead, she’s been in The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban hospital, recovering from surgery.

Leprosy had clawed her hands. “I couldn’t use my hand anymore because it had clawed so much,” Rajisha told us. “The doctor suggested I go for reconstructive surgery.”

The ﬁrst signs of Rajisha’s leprosy were patches on her face. Then her hands began to stiffen and curl inwards. When she ﬁrst got her leprosy diagnosis, Rajisha had felt sick to her stomach.

Now, Rajisha is eagerly waiting for her cast to be removed. Her ﬁngers have been straightened. But she will still need

physiotherapy to retrain her muscles. If she keeps up with her exercises, it’s likely she will regain full use of her ﬁngers.

Maya’s life transformed by working with multiple materials

Maya was nine months pregnant when her husband abandoned her. She was left with no support, no income, and no home. Without any other option, she moved back home to her father’s house. Maya soon had her baby, and with two more mouths to feed, they struggled to have enough food and other necessities. Maya decided she needed to try and help. But how?

Maya’s family had always struggled. She wasn’t able to attend school growing up, so all her skills were in housekeeping. The only option she had was to work as a maid. The pay was low, too low to meet her family’s needs. She took the job, but after a while knew it wasn’t enough, and she kept looking.

Then she met an artisan who worked for Prokritree. She was told about the Fair Trade work conditions, and the support that the production unit can give to people like her. Maya felt the glow of hope in her heart, and so she went to ask for a job.

The manager listened to Maya’s story and wanted to offer her a job. She told them she had no training, but they offered to train her. She quickly learned how to make all sorts of things — notebooks, greeting cards, and jewellery boxes, all out of handmade paper. Maya worked hard and was promoted to a higher position. Now she had money to support her family and send her son to school.

Now Maya is a highly respected artisan. She works with lots of varied materials. Like the nut ﬁbre and straw used to make this birdhouse!

When I met Raj at The Anandaban Hospital’s Self-Care Unit, he was so grateful for the care and training he had received. He told us how he came to be there.

Raj was playing cricket when he stepped on a piece of glass. It went deep into his foot, causing a terrible wound — but he didn’t feel a thing. After weeks, his foot still wouldn’t heal. He tried desperately to ﬁnd a solution. But nobody seemed to have an answer. Until he came to Anandaban Hospital and was diagnosed with leprosy.

When Raj found out it was leprosy, he was devastated. He told us:

“I used to think it would be better if I died. When I found out I had leprosy, I cried a lot. Some of the patients at the hospital said I could not have babies because I had leprosy. That really hurt me and my wife.”

At that time, Raj also thought his wife should marry someone else to have a better life. He worried if they had children, they would be born with a disability due to his leprosy.

But now after undertaking Multi-Drug Therapy treatment (the cure for leprosy), reassurance from the doctors and all the care he has received Raj feels differently.

Chameli’s cards are a caring gift

When Chameli was just 9 years old, she was diagnosed with leprosy. She had eight younger siblings who she took care of. But after her diagnosis, not even her family would go near her. She was treated as an outcast from her village, and had to beg on the street for food and money. After living in a situation like this, can you imagine how life-changing it would be to ﬁnd a job tailored just for you?

Chameli travelled a long way to get treatment for her leprosy. She was able to get Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), and returned to her village after being healed. But she continued to have complications. She kept getting terrible ulcers on her legs, and they would not heal.

She met other people who had leprosy, and she felt she could be part of the community that understood her. Her ulcers could be treated and kept under control, even though it still impacted her life. She was also able to get in contact with New SADLE.

Chameli has very weak ﬁngers, and lots of ulcers still form in her legs. Because of this, it’s difficult for her to do a lot of work. New SADLE helped her learn how to do traditional Batik painting — something she can do without stressing her body too much. Now, she makes beautiful batik designs, like the ones you can see on these cards!

Rima has had a lot of jobs to take care of her family. Running a hotel, a kiosk shop, tailoring service, taxis, and farming — anything she could to earn enough money to support her family. But it’s been difficult to build a sustainable business. But with a helping hand and a Gift of Love, Rima’s life is transforming!

When Rima’s husband passed away, she had to sell the business they ran together. They needed the money for medical bills, and they wanted to move closer to family. She learned tailoring and started to repair clothes and teach people to sew. Using some of her proﬁts, she tried to run a taxi service with tuk-tuks. However, due to the theft of one vehicle and the changing market, she had to sell her vehicles and close the business.

She started to grow rice, and other crops when she could. Her daughter would help when able, but she mostly did the work alone. Rima has had to work hard and manage her money carefully to keep her family supported.

Then she learned about the local Self-Help Group (SHG) from Leprosy Mission staff! Through the SHG, she was able to get training to manage her business and money, and deal with problems like the climate and natural disasters. She was able to get a loan to grow her tailoring business, and has already been able to repay it. This is also how she got her extra gift.
