Binda’s husband was affected by leprosy, and so the two of them struggled to find work. One of the producers you support, New SADLE, offered both of them work. Now, 15 years later, Binda has been a dedicated weaver, making products to sell to people like you in Australia!

Why the armadillo?

Together, Binda and her husband make enough money to take care of their two sons. New SADLE helps to pay for their boys to go to school, and get all the books they need.

The reason New SADLE can give this support is because of people like you who buy their products! The effect you have will last —  and build a bright future!

The nine-banded armadillo is pretty much the only animal that not only gets leprosy but can pass it on to humans. But don’t worry: Armadillos are not found in Australia, and it is illegal to keep them as pets here, though you may see them in the care of a zoo.

Observing the armadillo contributes to global knowledge of leprosy and the transmission of this ancient disease. With the armadillo’s help, the global leprosy community is getting closer and closer to eliminating leprosy in our lifetime. We band together with the armadillo in the 150th year of Leprosy Mission around the world and The Leprosy Mission Australia is honoured to have it as our emblem.

How Bees Are Helping People With Leprosy in Nepal

When Bel got leprosy, it attacked his body. He was left with physical disability, which made it hard for him to take care of his family. “I have very little arable land,” Bel tells us. “The production is not enough for the whole year. I was having difficulty managing the financial situation.”

Bel was talking about his problems with a friend, who had a suggestion. What if Bel took up beekeeping? It takes less physical exertion and very little land to produce the same value. Bel was inspired!

He went to his cooperative, formed by the IMPACT project, and proposed the business idea to them – and they loved it! They approved his proposal and loaned him money to buy his beehive and bees.

In the first year, Bel produced over 20kg of honey! He was able to repay the loan,increase the number of hives and is now producing more than 3 times as much! Since starting his new business, Bel has been able to save 5 times more money each month!

It takes a lot to escape poverty. This can be especially true for women like Evangeline. It takes access to an opportunity — and your shopping can provide that opportunity!

Evangeline grew up in a leprosy colony. Her father had leprosy and the only way he could get money for his family was begging on the streets. They struggled to get by as a family of six with little money.

Evangeline left school after Grade 9 and taught herself how to use the sewing machine at home. She was eligible to work in the colony weaving unit, where she learned to make parts for bags. She was motivated to gain new skills, also learning how to use and maintain a loom. And when a new opportunity arose, Evangeline was quick to volunteer!

MESH needed workers to add leather trim to their traditional cotton bags. Evangeline rapidly learned the new skills, cutting and sewing leather and canvas. She learned how to use WhatsApp too. Now she co-ordinates between the designers at MESH and the production teams she works with. Her smiling face is often seen on the screens in the MESH studio!

“I like sewing and enjoy the atmosphere learning new things, increasing my knowledge and skills all the time,” Evangline tells us. “I use my earnings to meet household costs, and especially for anything my daughters need.”

For many kids in the world, like Pooja, leprosy means poverty. When you give a Gift of Love, you can give them the opportunity to change their circumstances.

When Pooja’s father was diagnosed with leprosy, they didn’t know what it was. It was scary seeing his hands slowly start to claw. After he was diagnosed, it took 6 years of frequent hospital trips for him to be healed.

He was forced to stop working, cutting their family’s income severely.

“Our family had a very tough time back then,” Pooja tells us. “Once we had our lunch, we had to think twice for considering the options for evening meal. The struggle of living and growing up in poverty felt incredibly painful and unpleasant.”

The pressure built up on Pooja’s mother, and her siblings. She watched as her eldest brother dropped out of school to become a labourer, to help take care of the family. Her older sister was going to do the same thing — until she was given an opportunity.

Children’s Scholarship

Schools often turn away children from leprosy affected families. The Leprosy Mission works hard to open school doors. Leprosy makes life in poverty difficult. Families cannot usually afford school materials. But your Gifts of Love help them afford a uniform, books and pens.

How you can give hope to people with leprosy like Dina

Dina was diagnosed with leprosy two years ago. She had patches on her skin, and had never heard of leprosy. As it was explained to her, she began to cry. She felt that her future was gone and feared what would happen to her daughter if she can’t look after her.

This kind of story is all too common, and it’s why supporters like you are so, so important!

Dina was able to start Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) to cure her leprosy. But she had Type 2 reactions. This means she has episodes of fever and inflammation all over her body, causing burning pains that leaves her unable to do any work. Dina gets these reactions very frequently, up to 3 times a month.

When she has these reactions, Dina will go to her local hospital to treat the pain. But when it became too severe, they referred her to Anandaban Hospital — a hospital you support!

This time, Dina has been at Anandaban for 5 weeks, and she is feeling much better. But she is far from home. She had to travel 12 hours to get here and had to leave her daughter with her sister-in-law. She’s been on
