When light is not enough!

The development process was again a family affair: our Deuter Bike Family played an essential role, first and foremost Hans Rey, Andy Rieger, Gerhard Czerner and our downhill legends Marcus Klausmann and Antje Kramer. We all wanted to take a different angle – we wanted out-of-the-box thinking! We looked at the fact that no matter how good a pack fits it will still ride up the body – unless you give it no chance of moving. We therefore placed the hip wings of the new Attack just below the
rider’s rip cage, so the pack is anchored to the body. While on uphill climbs you just loosen the straps and it rests comfortably on the hips. Our athletes are a crucial part of the Deuter team, but so are, of course, our colleagues in Vietnam who are so dedicated to manufacture high quality products. Our passion for sports and outdoors fuels our belief in environmental and social responsibility. We were pretty proud when we received the Fair Wear Foundation “Best Practice Award” in 2015. The independent organisation honoured our “courageous investments, both in the production country and at the Deuter headquarters” and recognized that “the effective measures to reduce overtime have directly benefitted workers”. The award shows that we are on the right track – with our philosophy that drives us as well as with our products for the world’s trails. There is this moment when spring is in the air, when a whiff of tire rubber rides the warm breeze and you just want to push those pedals. You are full of plans. Goals are set, motivation is high. We know the feeling too well here at Deuter – on the trails as well as at work. We love challenging projects and one we tackled for this season was our Attack. It has turned into a new protector pack and the family has grown with two new models that can’t wait to ride the trails – or even race enduro. We shaved off weight and added flexibility. But light is not enough! Of course, the Attack still provides the highest level of protection, we have also integrated a whole host of sensible features, and we freed our minds from traditional back system concepts.
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, the first woman to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without using supplementary oxygen: “Back then not all of the rucksacks were available with a shorter back length. On many of the packs the shoulder straps or hip wings were pretty uncomfortable. Today, Deuter’s SL collection includes all packs – all customized to the female anatomy.”

We just knew we had to change the shape and the position of the anchor points.”

Shorter back
Women have – in general – shorter backs than men. The SL carry systems are therefore shorter than Deuter’s standard backpacks.
Angela Vögele, head of the SL team and outdoor lover: “We constantly had the feeling the shoulder straps could slip from the shoulders as they were sitting so far outside. After all the changes in 2006 the straps curved around the upper body. What a difference in comfort.”
Narrower shoulder straps
with soft edges, smaller buckles and very narrow strap extensions prevent the SL shoulder straps from chafing or putting unwantedpressure on the chest area. Since women normally have narrower shoulders, the shoulder straps are positioned closer together to prevent strap slippage.

Conical shaped hip belt
To fit women’s hips comfortably the hip belt should form a conical shape when closed. This conical shape is achieved by the diagonal construction of the belts’ anchor points as well as the curved shape of the SL hip fins. DEUTER SL-Team
Deuter’s product development team for the women’s specific SL line consists of female designers and top athletes from all disciplines/sports. It’s almost an occupational habit that our experts can never stand still. Sinece 2006 they are always pushing forward – also when it comes to developing products.

products are sold internationally via importers. The distributors in the respective countries have their own planning systems and can place their orders independently. We now shift more orders to the low season offering sale appeals and setting up precise specifications and earlier deadlines. We further focus on early order placements, improving the factories efficiency, staff training, overtime monitoring and wage increase. We are on a good way: we were able to significantly reduce excessive working hours since 2011. A working week of six days is common in Asia, but there was hardly any work on Sundays. We have not yet achieved our goal of 48 hours plus an overtime of 12 hours per week – and a maximum of 300 a year. We are working with our partners on a continuous improvement! We were now honoured by the FWF for our measures: at its annual conference in April 2015 in Amsterdam the FWF recognized us with the Best Practice Award out of 12 nominated member projects. This very special award shows us how much the FWF values our efforts and it encourages us strongly to continue our chosen path, step by step, to improve working conditions worldwide.

Shield System
Deuter’s Shield System helps to minimise or even prevent injury occurring during risk sports. The backpack material is accurately adapted to the integrated SAS protector – a combination that results in the highest safety standard – the same standard that applies for motorsports! The dampening heart of the Shield System is the viscose-elastic SC-1* foam by SAS-Tec. It has been tested and proven for many years. Now Deuter introduces the latest, state-of-the-art update: extra long, yet still lighter thanks to strategically placed holes. It is the most up-to-date protector on the market! Its ‘smart’ foam remains soft and flexible in normal use. On heavy impact the foam resistance grows with increasing speed. It thus delivers excellent shock absorption, whereas hard shell protectors simply spread the impact. The foam returns to its original shape after every deformation, a ‘memory effect’ that allows the protector’s multi-use. PE reinforcement integrated in the backpack’s carry system further protects against sharp or pointed objects.

(DIN EN 1621-2:2014-05) A triangular weight is dropped from one meter height onto the protector, which is placed on an anvil with sensor cells that measure how much remaining force is transmitted through the protector. There are two levels of performance in the European rating norm: Level 1 for protectors with an average force transfer of 18.000 N. And Level 2 for enhanced protection with an average peak force below 9.000 N, and no single value shall exceed 12.000 N.
The average absorption of the Attack protector (yellow curve) is liegt knapp über 6000N and therefore within the stricter protection level 2. The very flat curve shows a strong impact absorption and a wide spreading of the force – preventing a punctual impact on the body. Average protectors (red curve) show almost double the transmitted force and a much steeper impact curve. Without any sort of protection the peak impact would be about 108000 N!

Our Deuter Bike Family is not very large, but it is very valuable, especially because our athletes are deeply involved in our product development. The very first samples ride the world’s trails on the backs of bike icon Hans Rey or Gerhard Czerner, are put to the test by our downhill legends Marcus Klausmann and Antje Kramer, and go on multiple-day trips with Andy Rieger and Hannes Klausner. Three times a year we all meet to work hard on the products. This season our riders input was essential for the re-design of our Attack – and this is what you get what you want.

Give A Bike – Change A Life For us bikes may be our favourite recreational activity, for people in Third World countries they can mean survival. Wheels4Life is a non-profit organisation that provides free bicycles for people in need of transportation. The charity was founded in 2005 by Hans Rey, bike icon, trial world champion, film star, adventurer and member of the Deuter Bike Family. To date well over 7.000 bikes have been delivered to people who live in very primitive and remote areas with no access to public transportation. Hans has shown us here at Deuter how a bicycle can make all the difference and can even save lives. We therefore decided to support this outstanding mission with 10.000 Euro over the coming three years. In 2015 Wheel4Life focused in particular on two countries: Nepal and Uganda. After the devastating earthquakes in the Himalayan region, Hans and his team spontaneously shipped bikes to the country. With the wiped out infrastructure bikes were essential for the transportation of urgent medical care.
Many people in the region of Bugembe and Buwenda lack basic needs, including means of transportation, which would facilitate their access to safe water sources, schools, health facilities, and local markets. Wheels4Life distributed 31 bicycles among the critically needy school-going children, who previously had to walk distances over 6 kilometers in mountainous areas to access basic education. 5 bikes were given to poor teachers who teach in several schools located far away from their homes. And CIDAR further picked 14 people in urgent need of transportation: nurses, farmers and community workers. That is also something truly special about the Wheels4Life mission: not just one person profits from a bicycle – it changes the life of the entire family and very often of many, many people in the surrounding area. For us Hans is not just one of the greatest mountainbikers in the world, but also a man driven by an immensely positive mission. We are very happy and proud to support Wheels4Life, an organisation that has been changing and saving lives for 10 years with the means of bicycles. What counts? The right backpack material! Deuter is known for its durable and reliable backpacks, because we use only high quality fabrics and we know which material to use on which part of the pack to create efficient performance and low weight. Our backpacks feature ripstop, abrasion resistant, colourfast, UV-resistant, quick drying, water resistant, long lasting and lightweight material. The two most important synthetic materials are made of Nylon (Polyamide) and Polyester fibres. High-density Polyamide fabric is extremely abrasion resistant in a thin layer and is more robust than Polyester. It is popular due to its high performance in a lightweight layer. While Polyester doesn't absorb water and doesn’t bleach when exposed to UV rays. Plus the rugged Polyester fabric has a typical soft touch and is lightweight. The fabrics are specified by their thread thickness in denier (den), which is the thread weight specified over a thread length of 9,000 metres. This means that a 9,000 metre long 600 den thread, for example, would weigh 600 grams. To provide high water resistance, Deuter fabrics are coated exclusively with polyurethane (PU) which is abrasion-proof, cold resistant and flexible.
Polyamide (Nylon) 330D Hybrid Check: A very durable Polyamide material with a stylish look. The tightly woven Nylon fibres offer high abrasion resistance and the PU coating provides good water protection (>1.500mm WS). The material’s check design results from the yarn’s varying surface. Despite the 330 den, the weave structure adds great stability and tear strength.
Ripstop 210 & Ripstop 330: This ultra-tight woven 210 and 330 den Nylon provides the ideal balance of strength and minimal weight. Its very technical, shiny surface incorporates tough ripstop threads. This extremely robust fabric is perfectly suited for lightweight products. Top quality PU coating.
Super-Polytex: Made from 600 den Polyester thread and with a thick PU coating, this multi-purpose fabric is robust and lightweight. It is most suitable for backpacks, used in average conditions to keep the weight to a minimum. “Deuter Super-Polytex BS” is produced in accordance to the strict bluesign standard. Same functions and durability qualities as Deuter-Super-Polytex.
Pocket Rip: We use this robust Nylon fabric in 250 den and 330 den. The lightweight fabric is durable and has a 2.000 mm water column thanks to the PU coating.
Matrix RS 150 D: A fine, lightweight Nylon weave with silky feel. The diagonal weave structure with ripstop function provides high abrasion resistance. The PU coating grants excellent water resistance and makes the seams especially durable.
3D-AirMesh: A 3 mm thick and therefore three dimensional Polyester mesh. The optimum air permeability and padding effect turns it to the ideal lining fabric for back padding, shoulder straps and hip belts. It offers maximum durability and comfort.
Ballistic: High-density woven, PU coated Polyamide 420 denier fabric with high strength and low weight makes it especially suitable for our Trans Alpine packs. Shiny finish.
Taffeta-Nylon: It is a fine weave of 190 den threads for the Deuter rain covers. Lightweight and with small packing dimensions. The PU coating grants excellent water resistance.
Wide AirMesh: Larger holed skin contact fabric with excellent breathability and lighter weight. 3-5 mm thick, this Polyester fabric combines durability with comfort.
Neoprene: Neoprene is a elastomer foam usually laminated on both sides to Nylon or Lycra to protect the surface and increase durability. We use Neoprene for hip belts that need to be flat, extremely flexible and robust. The protective features make it the ideal material for our Neon Belt and the Camera Cases. And we use its insulation qualities for our Tube Insulator.
Taffeta Carbonite: Comparable to the 190 “Taffeta-Nylon”. Taffeta Carbonite however, is highly waterproof due to the special carbonite PU coating. This together with its ripstop weave for increased tear resistance, makes it ideal for our waterproof accessories.
Soft Air Mesh: Lining material used for back padding and shoulder straps. It is breathable and extremely abrasion resistant. At the same time it offers great comfort with a soft touch on the skin, which is especially appreciated by women. We therefore use Soft AirMesh especially for our female specific SL backpack range.
MacroLite: Special high-density 420 denier Polyamide offers high abrasion resistance with its very tight weave. This top quality fabric is used for Guide and Futura backpacks and Travel range models. It has a fine texture and a technical look. PU coating.
Hexlite 100 & Hexlite 210: Extremely lightweight Ripstop Polyamide material with textured structure. The 100 version of the fabric is used for ultra lightweight backpacks, the 210 den fabric for the lightweight bike backpacks. The reinforcement fibres woven into the fabric increase the tear strength and add stability to this thin fabric. PU coating inside.
Microrip-Nylon: 210 den Nylon fabric with strong ripstop threads and PU coating. This fine, lightweight and yet abrasion resistant Nylon is optimal for lightweight backpack construction.
Pocket Rip Mini 100D: The lightweight version of our Nylon Pocket Rip. The thin yarn is extremely lightweight. Yet the tight weave makes it extremely abrasion and tear resistant.
YKK® zippers: The best available on the market – these top quality zippers are very robust and reliable. Durable spring steel frame: Spring steel is extraordinarily stable and elastic. It is very durable since it springs back into its original form when twisted or turned. In a lightweight round profile construction it allows a very flexible frame build. In a flat profile, it constructs a frame with an extremely high form stability. We use both for our Aircomfort models to give our patented ventilation mesh panel its stable tension.
