your credits
Your Credits
You Deserve CREDIT for What You’ve Done Fontbonne gives credit for courses that are considered college-level work from an accredited, degree-granting institution of higher learning. Remedial courses — generally those numbered below 100, such as Math 013 — do not usually qualify as credit. Transferable courses that meet the general education requirement must have a grade of D or better. However, a grade of C- or higher is required for courses in the major. A blended, cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for admission consideration to Fontbonne. Students coming from a community college or other two-year institution may transfer a maximum of 64 credit hours to Fontbonne. Fontbonne does not have a limit on the number of transferable credit hours for students coming from four-year institutions. The student’s intended major department determines the number of hours that will be accepted for transfer. All transfer students must complete a minimum of 32 credit hours, including half of the major requirements and all of the last 12 hours required for their degree, at Fontbonne. When you apply to Fontbonne, we will offer you an estimate of the credits you could transfer and how they will apply to your program here. Once you are accepted, you will receive a tentative evaluation of transfer credit. This document will show the total number of hours being transferred and will indicate which credits apply toward our general education requirements and which apply toward the major.

WE VALUE YOUR EXPERIENCE
Through a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), you may be awarded credit as a result of professional or military training and experience. College credit can be awarded for military courses and enlisted ranks/ military specialties or professional training courses evaluated by the American Council on Education. A maximum of 32 credit hours will be accepted in PLA credit. Students may not count this credit toward the 32-hour residency requirement at Fontbonne. Fees charged for PLA credit are subject to change. To find out more about PLA, call 314.863.2220. The standards and criteria established by Fontbonne for assessing college-level learning were developed in conformance with guidelines set forth by the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
PORTFOLIO EVALUATION
If you think you’ve already acquired the competencies of college courses, you may petition for credit through a portfolio evaluation. You may request a maximum of 32 credit hours through the portfolio process.
THIS IS A TEST It’s possible to earn Fontbonne credit by taking Advanced Placement or CLEP tests. In the case of AP Tests and CLEP subject exams, the appropriate Fontbonne department will decide how much credit will be given and for which specific courses. Students will not receive credit for any subject exam if they have already taken a college course of an equal or higher level in that subject. Students scoring above the 50th percentile may earn up to 30 credits with CLEP exams. These exams must be taken before or during the first semester of the student’s first year at Fontbonne. More information on AP and CLEP tests is available at www.collegeboard.com.
core requirements
Core Requirements
General Education REQUIREMENTS The liberal arts perspective is the academic backbone of a Fontbonne education. This focus is especially evident in Fontbonne’s general education requirements, designed to teach flexible skills and offer broad exposure to the world of ideas. To earn a Fontbonne degree, you need to complete 42 credit hours for this curriculum. Transfer students typically find that some of their credits transfer to satisfy courses in the general education requirements, while other credits satisfy the requirements of a specific major.
PLACEMENT TESTS Fontbonne uses placement tests to evaluate and advise incoming students. Like other new students, transfer students also take these tests. A transfer student may be exempt from a specific placement test if he or she has earned college credit (with a grade of D or better) in that test’s subject area and that subject area meets Fontbonne’s general education curriculum.
The Missouri Department of Higher Education has established guidelines for transfer procedures, including a 42-hour block of general education competencies. While Missouri’s requirements differ from Fontbonne’s, students who complete an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree from a Missouri community college will be exempt from Fontbonne’s general education requirements, except any specific general education courses required for the student’s major. Additionally, students who have completed the 42-hour block at a Missouri community college are able to transfer to Fontbonne before or without completing their Associate of Arts degree through the Missouri Reverse Transfer initiative. Students who do not complete an Associate of Arts degree or the 42-hour block will have their credits evaluated on a course-by-course basis.
