Memories of Wonderful Cars
F
Richard Pugh
ew lovers of automobiles will have remembered several of the cars my Dad purchased as I was growing up: In 1952 he ordered a new MG-TD and drove it for a couple of years until he got the urge to get a car with roll up windows rather than drafty ‘side curtains’ which were always a poor substitute for glass. One night he came pulling into the driveway with a shiny new Sunbeam Talbot convertible. (Continued on Page 5)

would like to welcome Vanessa Hundley to the BTS Entertainment Corner. Not only is Vanessa a talented DJ in the bustling Atlanta area, she has also hosted her own WEB TV show, been a guest DJ on other WEB TV shows and is a Producer and Film Festival Consultant for the NSAEN Online Film Festival. Brian (BTS): Hello Vanessa. First, I would like for you tell our readers about you're journey to the beginning of your career in 2001. Was it a love of music, entertaining people or a combination of both that got you started? Vanessa (VH): I have always been immersed in many styles of music throughout my life. I took a lot of dance classes when I was younger, including ballet, tap, jazz and others, and I played the flute and the tuba throughout my years in school band. Plus, we always had a radio on and I was also a child of the MTV generation, so there was a lot visually going on with music and artists that really helped you identify with them even more than in previous generations. On a professional level, I had started out as a licensed massage therapist right after high school as it was a more practical option for myself as a teen mom. A few years later, I transitioned to bartending when I found myself looking for a more social vocation. Not too long after I moved to Atlanta I managed to get hired at Bellbottoms, a popular retro club, at the time, in Buckhead. Sometimes I wouldn't be needed behind the bar right away, so I would go upstairs and play with the lights until it was

Vanessa Hundley: Mulit-Talented DJ, Producer, Entrepreneur time to pour. It was actually the house DJ (also my first mentor) who turned to me one day and said "Why don't you think about being a DJ? You've got the timing, and you know the music." After shift that night, he walked me through the mechanics of my first beat matching lesson, and then told me to come back when I could do it on my own and he would teach me more. It took me two weeks of practicing, over and over again, before one day I got a perfect beat mix that went for over 2 minutes. And then the journey continued... and is still going! BTS: I also DJ some myself, although not to the level you have taken your career. I can relate to the feeling of seeing people dancing to what I'm playing to people laughing at my bits when I'm doing comedy. Can you compare those moments when you have the club jumping to anything else you do in life? VH: One of my favorite things that my first mentor told me was that, as a DJ, if you can talk to people with music, you don't have to say a word. Of course, I like to play with people and celebrate with them and share the moment, but some of my favorite times are when everyone is at the point where they really just let themselves go and follow the energy. And at the events I am part of we create the energy together, so over the night it becomes this symbiosis of artistic give and take that is hard to recreate in anything that is solo or not in the creative sphere. I do feel that same cohesion with myself after a really great web episode, or after finishing a piece of writing, or when I figure out how to move forward on any one of my projects, but that tidal connection is something that you can really only nurture in a group situation. This unique brand had been active in the UK for 25 years and was an example of English quality and dependability. Speed? Well these cars never produced much of that so within a year he exchanged it for a Sunbeam Talbot Alpine a two seater sports car with ten more horsepower and could go 20 miles per hour faster! These strange little cars had the most unusual gear shift mounted on the steering column and my Dad never liked that! He preferred a stick shift mechanisms on the floor which was never going to be produced by Sunbeam that, because of poor sales soon withdrew from the American market and went bankrupt only a short time later. Lots of cars we bought over the years would be collectors today but have largely faded into history: like the Austin A-40, Rover, Renault, Hillman, Morris Minor, Triumph TR4, Austin Healy 100, MG Magnet, Fiat 500 and 600, and other terrific little cars have simply gone “POOF!” It wasn’t long before those beautiful XK120 Jaguars were on Dad’s mind and he had to have one: but they were costly… over $4,000! The XK models were a thing of proportional beauty which right off the showroom floor would clock out at 120 miles per hour; hense, part of their names. He later bought a convertible Jag XK 140 and this was to be the car he would keep forever…and although he never tested it to see if would actually do 140 mph he was assured it would. America caught on and all of a sudden Corvettes and T-birds would appear on the streets. Like Henry Ford advertised you could buy a T Model

in any color you wanted as long as it was black, the early Vettes came only in white…and had a miserably underpowered six cylinder engine that honestly ‘would not get out of its own way’ due to that terrible Power Glide two speed automatic transmission. With all those negatives, Dad took a pass on buying one of the earlier models! But just a little later GM put a terrific V-8 engine in that beauty and it became a most wonderful roadster…except it still had that two speed automatic transmission. When the next edition of the Vette came out, it had more horsepower and a four speed transmission that shifted like a knife through butter. It was a complete, modern and beautiful machine that would compete with any other car on the road. I ran it once at a Sports Car Club of America sanctioned race in Walterboro, S.C. and while I learned quickly I couldn’t keep up with the exotic two Ferraris and the one Cunningham entered in the race, I got racing out of my system and that was sad! What memories! After coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the position of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Association and serving as Director of Physician Relations at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh retired in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

through the snow like animals pushing out their noses to breathe’. And Ethan himself is described as ‘a part of the mute melancholy landscape, an incarnation of its frozen woe, with all that was warm and sentient in him fast bound below the surface’. Many readers might dismiss “Ethan Frome” as simply depressing. It could also be argued that the author unconvincingly contrived a predicament of hopelessness for Ethan and Mattie. Why not run away from their prison-like existence on the farm, assume a new identity and start over? Whatever the consequent risks, such an option is preferable to suicide! But for me Wharton’s rendering of this material transcends any of its shortcomings. Even the depressing elements attain a grim beauty (Ethan’s search for Mattie after their failed suicide is a heartbreaking example). Also, Wharton could have argued that innumerable lovers have ended their lives together under the pressure of circumstances far less desperate than that of Ethan and Mattie. Therefore, what these two do (or attempt to do) is at least psychologically plausible. Wharton’s view of romantic love, and life in general, was decidedly pessimistic. She once said: “Life is the saddest thing, next to death.” While I do not share this outlook, her “Ethan Frome” touched me deeply. Also, it cannot be denied that Ethan and Mattie’s awful fate has played out, in one way or another, in the lives of many people down through the ages. The only hope thus left is a life and love beyond this life. But such hope is absent from the stark, devastating vision of Edith Wharton’s novel. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."
BTS: I'm a big fan of your "Audioprism" WEB TV show. You really did a great job putting it together, doing the research, bringing people new music, showing the clips and hosting the show yourself. Not to mention the Jessica "It's All Good" Williams special segment as well. Where did the inspiration come for the show's format and where are you taking the show now? VH: Thank you for that! "The Audioprism Show" was my
first foray into writing and developing an online show. I had been around several of them in the prior years, and between watching others and doing more online research I found a lot of good resources and guides to help me with structure and such. I know so many incredibly talented people that I definitely wanted to bring on the show so we could explore not only what they did but how it could be incorporated into so many other complimentary events and projects, and it has been wonderful being able to talk more about music and movies and creative endeavors of all kinds with (Continued on page 7)

people who are dedicated and passionate. And because I love so much about music, I really wanted to be able not to just look at the new music and where it's going but be able to look back at where music has been. If you are ever at one of my live sets, you already know that you never know what you might hear next. Currently I have been restructuring and updating all the behind the scenes technical stuff, but coming soon is going to be a whole new series of interviews, plus in depth explorations of music and how it has developed, reviews and explorations of new and old music, and how DJ's use different types of music in different scenarios to create the energy they or the client want. Plus so, so much more. And of course, there will be more of comedienne Jessica "It's All Good" Williams! There were instant collaboration sparks the minute we met, and we have some very enthusiastic outlines and ideas for the future! BTS: You're an incredible, multi-talented lady. What oth-

er talents do you have that we may not know about? How about any upcoming projects? VH: That's the fun part about a lot of us creative types, we often have so many more interests than just what we are known for! One of my earliest passions was acting. While I don't see that in the cards as a full-time vocation in the future, I have translated my many years on the microphone into work as Voice Over talent, which is a fun way of acting without all the hair and makeup. I also love to write, usually poetry but sometimes short essays or stories. Painting and creating art of all kinds puts me in a very happy place. And to tie all my passions together I am actually working on a book project that will have online video supplements to go with it. I will definitely come back with more details on that as it becomes more developed. In the meantime, though, I have finally gotten up to speed in 2018 and created a Mixcloud page, where I have been uploading mixes that I have been recording live at a variety of events. I have some new ones from the summer going up soon, so check it out at www.mixcloud.com/djaudioprism. There is and will be all kinds of sets with all kinds of music - because that's how I spin! BTS: Vanessa, it was an honor to bring you to our board of directors for the NSAEN Online Film Festival. I must say your contributions have been amazing. What did you learn from your first year as a Producer and Film Festival Consultant? What are you looking forward to in 2018 for our festival? Any favorite films from the first year, we had some great ones! VH: It has been an honor to be a part of it, and I was of course thrilled to be part of it this year as well. Jacci Turner Why do I drive two hundred miles just to spend a day not talking to anyone? Well, it’s mostly the cookies. Mercy Center, the place I go for my monthly silent retreat, has really good homemade cookies. Also, I love the napping. I’m not really a napper during my ordinary day at home, but something about being at this retreat center pulls out my inner napper and I sleep really well. The grounds are beautiful too, which for a Nevadan is very, very important. I’d drive that far just to see some trees. But, something deeper happens there that is hard to explain. It’s like I’m a jar full of dirty, swirling, river water and when I get there, the sediment has a chance to settle and I begin to see things more clearly. Not that seeing things more clearly is always pleasant. Sometimes I see my selfishness more clearly, or my insecurities, which are easy to hide from myself in my day-to-day life. Sometimes I see my hurts more clearly and it becomes apparent that I need to ask for help. Sometimes I see God more clearly. During this most recent trip over the mountain to Mercy Center, all of these things happened for me. I took hecka good naps, ate plenty of homemade cookies and let everything settle. I woke to the most astounding dream. It gave me fodder for prayer, and contemplation that led me to see some deep needs of my heart, of which I wasn’t even aware. Mercy Center is also where I meet with my spiritual director. She helps me to process what I see when things settle, and sometimes when they don’t. Most days I walk into her meeting room with absolutely NOTHING to talk about and in ten minutes I’m bawling like a baby. This crying, of course alternates with
Taking a Retreat hysterical laughter because… she’s a lot of fun. All this emotional purging leads to more napping and cookie eating, but boy, do I come home renewed. The other thing I do at Mercy Center is write. I’ve written a large percentage of my books there. And once, during my talk with my spiritual director, as I was telling her about my insecurities, my needs, my cookie eating, and what the latest character in my new book is up to when suddenly, it all came together: My characters are 100% me at their deepest core. Any confusion, insecurity, proclivity…yep, if you dig deep enough, it’s mine. Now THAT was a frightening revelation. I really, honestly thought they were a conglomeration of other people. And, in many ways they are: I borrow names, looks and mannerisms, but in reality, they are mostly me, yep me, in all of my swirling dirt. Put right out there for the whole world to see. What was I thinking to publish this stuff? How do you get in touch with your inner self? What works for you? If you’re a writer, do you think your characters are you at their core? Jacci Turner is the author of many books for teens and young ones. Her adult book, The Retreat: A Tale of Spiritual Awakening, was published by Harper Legend.

many other things I have had the fortune of being part of throughout my life, it offered me a unique look at the whole film festival industry. Which, to be honest, I had never thought of being part of before. Another one of those random life opportunities, but, as with being a DJ, one I am so glad I took the chance to be part of. It has allowed me to be part of a stellar group of people who are all forwardmotivated, principled and just so positive. While I am used to working with other people, to have a group of this size who has never met in person be so productive and respectful of each other is wonderful. I have learned something from each and every person on the board, and I have also been so impressed by my cinematic experiences with the submissions. As a DJ, I create moments for the moment, filmmakers and TV producers create moments that are out there forever, to be judged time and time again, and it takes such dedication and bravery to do that that every submission is a testament to someone's drive.
There were several 2017 submissions that really delivered. Among my favorites were The Drunk Lonely Housewives Book Club, The Breakout! A Rock Opera and Second Chance. A comedic web series, a musical and short film about second chances - such a variety of messages but all well-done and each entertaining in their own right. So, for 2018, all I can say is, keep 'em coming! Submit submit submit! BTS: Any last thoughts, advice for other entertain-
ers....warnings? VH: Last thoughts... keep reaching out to others! We are in a world right now where there are many who would like to silence people who are only now getting a voice, so reach out and help those voices that can't be heard as loudly yet. Advice for other entertainers? Have confidence in yourself and what you do, but not so much that you think you don't have anything left to learn. When you feel like you have nothing left to learn is when you start to get stale. I learn even from the DJ's I train now, they help me see songs I have played 10,000 times in a new light or help me explore new technology and techniques. Shirley can deliver. Brian has toured the USA, Canada, The Bahamas and Japan for 25 years. He combines menology, character driven material, story telling and has worked well known comedy clubs, country clubs, resorts, cruise ships, special events, military installations and private events!
