Twilight of Blessings
atience is cast upon our thoughts as life carries us into a drift of constant change; remaining a silent calm during chaotic moments bestows wisdom.
Honesty to self and knowing love is the key to all that is unconditional in this journey of expectations and dreams is to have visions of optimism. Worries or concerns of what our future holds is held by the hand of our creator; to receive a calling spoken inside our heart is guidance to purpose. Allow the flow of understanding, emerge into the reality of complete trust as we grow into the unseen series of events; we are sustained in spirit.

hen saying goodbye to an old friend who was moving out of this state…(now why in the world wound he leave this paradise?), my parting words “Our paths will cross again”! I hope he was pleased with the hope meaning we would eventually see each other again. It seems however that unfortunately our paths have never crossed again and I feel pathos about that. What exactly is a path, anyway? Supposedly we are all on a journey to some place and the likelihood, the possibility could well mean we’d see each other again, but a ‘path’ is not always a good thing to be on. For example that word path has many meanings. Just ask juvenile delinquents if they know they are on the wrong path and with certainty it will lead to bad things. You’ll probably receive a blank stare! The prefix ‘path’ to such things as “pathetic” meaning a sad, very sad and sorrowful situation or thought, “pathology” in medical terms is almost always bad news, “pathogenic” means it’s possible a bad result awaits you and pathological (as in pathological liar) which can mean a chronic inability of telling the truth. Not a good or safe path. In his renowned poem, Robert Frost makes a profound observation when he reaches the famous
Path Choices fork in the road and considers taking the “path less traveled by.” That philosophical rough, uneven
path if taken could lead to your end! There must be some reason the less traveled path is less traveled. Perhaps it leads to a great bear that will eat you! It’s possible the other path might well lead to that cherished “Golden Brick Road” and to a safe place. Consider this also. Remember Lewis Carroll’s writings about a little girl named Alice lost in Wonderland who comes to a fork in the road and asks a mythical Cheshire cat for a suggestion of which path to take. The wise cat replies, “Where do you want to go?” and she answers: (Continued on page 5)

van Matthew Cecil began his journey in the film and television business with a hunt for a college internship, which landed him a position in the Production Department on the 20th Century Fox film NINE MONTHS. The next eight years saw Evan take on a variety of film and television jobs, where he assumed a wide range of roles spanning numerous departments: Production, Art, Wardrobe, AD, and even Accounting. Evan has directed over 100 episodes for more than 15 different series, always delivering spectacular, entertaining programming on time and on budget. Evan’s work on these series has allowed him tremendous and varied experience directing both professional and non-professional actors, including deaf cast members on a 2012 episode for WIVES WITH KNIVES and the series CAMPUS NIGHTMARES for A&E
Brian (BTS): We’ve read a little about your journey, take us back before college and what gave you the hunger to be a filmmaker? Evan Matthew Cecil (EMC): Well, it sounds like such a basic answer, but it really all started for me by playing around with my sister, making stupid ass videos as kids. We’d borrow the neighbor’s camera before my dad got one for our family. I think as I got older and started studying filmmaking in college, directing wasn’t something I actually thought I’d be able to do. And then all of a sudden, there I was doing it for a living! At least that’s kind of how it felt. But in actuality, when I think back, it makes sense because I have worked my ass off for years in this industry getting to the point to direct. Sure, it would have been nice to step immediately into directing, but I do think my background and experience in such a wide range of other departments helps make me a better director. I’ve been (Continued on page 10)

Implementing A Successful Publicity Campaign: P.R. Does Not Stand for Press Release
I
n recent years there seems to be an increasingly common misconception among many entrepreneurs and business owners nationally who try to generate media attention and publicity for their products or ventures. Since starting my PR business more than a decade ago I have had more than a few clients come to me seeking "a P.R." to get more customers interested in their products/ businesses. That’s right a "P.R.". Contrary to what some people think, P.R. is NOT an acronym for "Press Release" – it stands for Public Relations. P.R. is much more than just a press release and that distinction is very important to understand. I often cringe when I see articles from well-intentioned "marketing" experts that say, in effect: "simply write a press release, pitch it to the media and just sit back and reap the benefits." Unfortunately, it is (Continued on page 15)

“I don’t know”! Replies the cat, “If you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t matter which path you take!” I have always thought the cat’s reply was cruel but filled with wisdom and worthy of remembering. Some wisdom might also be found by revisiting the oft quoted late-great baseball philosopher Yogi Berra in one of his thought provoking directives: “When you come to a fork in the road… TAKE IT!” Yogi once admitted he never said all the things he once said! Go figure.
Look to the future, because that is where you'll spend the rest of your life. www.quotes.net

from the perspective of a rectory cat! The droll and observant feline, whose name is Fritz (no relation whatsoever to the film character, “Fritz the Cat”), has an antagonistic relationship with Father Burner. But there’s a special providence in the actions of a cat; thus things work out all right for both Fritz and the curate. These three short stories—plus Morte D’Urban—represent J. F. Powers at his very best. And where the Catholic clergy is concerned, I doubt that it’s possible to read anything more intelligent, humorous and true to life.
John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

given an understanding of all the moving parts and how to collaborate with them productively. BTS: Do you think it’s beneficial for a filmmaker to take on as many jobs as possible before directing or producing? If so, how did you learn from these different jobs? EMC: Ha!!! I feel like I accidentally answered this in the first question somewhat…I started my path to directing on big budget studio projects with a little tiny role, over time hoping that my role would get bigger. Then I shifted to smaller projects but with bigger roles like directing with the hope that the projects would continue to get bigger. Not sure which is a better route, but for me, the second one worked. Or at least is working for me now. As far as what I’d recommend, yes, I absolutely draw on my past experience in different departments besides directing, but I don’t think it is essential. Mostly, I think it makes me a better collaborator which is how I like to work. BTS: You’ve done TV and now with Lasso, film. Do you have a preference or do you enjoy working on both equally? EMC: That is a hard question to answer. LASSO is definitely a big step up for my career, but I have such a fondness for the TV work I have done. It is “the good ol’ days” for me. We had so much fun making those shows. Just the sheer quantity of shows we’d spit out at breakneck pace created intense bonding among the crew.

Of course I want my career to skyrocket, but in a perfect world, me and the crew I have worked with over the years would all skyrocket together! BTS: How did you get involved with Lasso ? When and where can people expect to see it? Well, LASSO was an idea I have had for years. I think a lot of filmmakers have a file of concepts that they think would make for interesting content. A horror film set at a rodeo was one of mine. EMC: Almost randomly, I connected with another Bay Area local (Todd Myers) that wanted to start making films. Without a project, we had to figure out what we wanted to make. After reading tons of existing scripts and considering many ideas, we landed on LASSO. And the rest is history…barf! LASSO is out now, go to https://epic-pictures.com/ film/lasso to watch right this very moment! BTS: What’s next for you? Directing, producing? EMC: All of the above of course!!! I have a few different projects in development currently. The two I am most excited about are called BUNKER and PRESIPISE; I only do single word titled projects…ha! Brian T. Shirley has the look of a Don Rickles, the comedy of a George Carlin with a touch of Robin Williams but when you roll it all together, it is pure and unique and something only Brian T. hey say "all good things come to those who wait" and we now have a GREAT THING taking place at the Reno Town Mall. Everyone is excited about the opening of the Marshall Mint and Museum and I am amazed that every time a light is turned on, "sparkles" from the inventory cascade in all directions. Now, instead of Virginia City, people will be able to go to the Reno Town Mall, 4001 South Virginia Street at the Main Entrance and see this "living legend" of a store. Owned and operated by Hugh Roy and Cynthia Marshall as well as other members of the family, the store is known best for "quality" and will not only not change, but I believe, due to the new location, will improve. The Marshalls, especially Hugh Roy have left a large footprint here in the Great State of Nevada and

far from being that simple. That statement pre-supposes that the media release/pitch is written well – containing all the right elements and newspegs to catch the media eye – and that it is pitched and maintained in the correct media market, which is often the downfall of many amateur PR campaigns. By all means, a press release is an integral part of a PR campaign. But a press release alone does not a PR campaign make. A successful PR/publicity campaign for your business or product should include many, if not all of the following: • An interesting, quality, newsworthy product/service that the media (and its audience) will find merit in; • A concise, articulate media release or story pitch – not a glorified ad – detailing the benefits of your product/business/website and what effect it will have for its users; • A supply of media "supportives" – product photos (digital & hard copy), possible review samples, etc.; • An extensively researched media list detailing all applicable media outlets whose editorial profiles match your product/business profile. Here’s an important detail -- the targets of your pitch should be "name-specific" not just "title-specific" media contacts. By that I mean the media market research you compile should give you particulars like "Sally Jones-Cooking Editor" not just Tribune Newsroom or Managing Editor; • A solid, trustworthy media contact vehicle that gets your release/ media kit directly into the hands of the appropriate reporter/editor/ producer and allows them to respond easily to your pitch. (As always, beware of press release distribution services that often times indiscriminately spew your release to hundreds of mistargeted media
GIFT IDEAS!
outlets with little or no results.) Research to find out the preferred method of receipt of your media targets – don’t just assume an email will suffice. Whether it’s by snail mail, email, fax or phone calls, the media can’t run your story if they don’t hear about it. For one reason or another, some media may decide not to include your product/ business in a placement -- but don’t let them say the reason is because they weren’t made aware of it; • Meticulous media relations to immediately fulfill media requests (photos/interviews/product samples) and extensive media contact follow-ups over several months to generate as many placements as possible. Many times, media members can’t immediately respond to an initial pitch due to tight editorial deadlines and the time it takes to wade through a multitude of similar media pitches. I have found, without question, that the media interest continues to increase as you re-introduce the pitch and gently "rattle the media cage" over the course of the next several weeks/months; • Some sort of media tracking capabilities -- whether it’s your own media follow-ups, Internet research, or a professional broadcast/ print clipping service. Having "hard copies" of the placements generated by your PR campaign can be invaluable in the further marketing of your business/product. Media placements are a unique validation of the market acceptance for your business/product and can help you convince new customers of that fact. Think of launching a PR/publicity campaign like flying a kite. The press release (which aptly details your product/business) is the kite. But if your kite doesn’t have the proper amount of string, a good tail, a strong wind and the expert manipulation of the kite flier – it has very little chance of getting off the ground. But if all theses elements are in place – a PR/publicity campaign can send your business soaring like a kite on a breezy Spring afternoon.
