Artown 2018: Literary Events
ince 1996, Artown has been “inspiring community through the arts”. Nevada ar sts have the opportunity to par cipate in a month‐long summer fes val in July. Though you may not think of literary events when you think of Artown, it is fast becoming a very popular category for local writers, poets and fans of literature. Sundance Books and Music will host Daniel de Vise who will read from his new book released June 5, 2018, The Comeback: Greg LeMond, the True King of American Cycling, and a Legendary Tour de France. The Comeback chronicles the life of one of America’s greatest athletes, from his roots in Nevada and California to the heights of his global fame at the Tour de France. What a great way to celebrate the day a er the Fourth of July. The event will be held on July 5, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. Like a li le wine and cheese while you meet and greet with an author? The Nevada Historical Society will host an event on July 11, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. during their Wri ng Wednesday event. An evening of Spoken Word begins on July 18, 2018 at Sierra Arts Gallery. Michelle Myers is a twice‐Emmy nominated spoken word poet and has won mul ple awards. She became known through her appearance on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam as an original cast member and as a founding member of the spoken word poetry group Yellow Rage. Billed as a “sizzling summer literary cabaret”, LIT @ NITE: HOT A.F. EDITION (Rated R), is not dull poetry readings
or academic in nature. “You'll be taken on a tantalizing tour of literary performers, from bookish burlesque babes to lusty lyricists to poe c paramours and more.” I couldn’t have said it be er. was nineteen and was taking an English class at UNR when I read Homer’s epic for the first me. The theme of this course dealt with various literary works wherein characters undertook journeys and a ained as a consequence maturity or strength or wisdom or some other form of profound change. This theme intrigued me generally, but it struck me with special force when I read “The Odyssey”. Not long a erward I dropped out of college and enlisted in the Navy. Was Homer the inspira on for that four‐year commitment? Not en rely but in part. “The Odyssey” was wri en around 700 B.C. and the se ng for it follows the fall of Troy. Though the book is populated by a great number of characters, both human and divine, the main protagonist is Odysseus—a Greek warrior/sailor/king who is striving to return to his

beloved wife and homeland. His many adventures along the way are dangerous, exci ng, strange, pleasant and amorous. The la er involves a lengthy stay with Kalypso, ‘a nymph, immortal and most beau ful, who craved him for her own’. And yet Odysseus ‘s ll hungered for home and wife’. The most a rac ve feature of “The Odyssey” is its theme of love for home. You leave home—for one reason or another, willingly or unwillingly—only to desire a return to it. Moreover, you cannot really appreciate the value of home unless you experience the loss of it. That is what the word “journey” has come to mean to me. On the other hand, the least a rac ve feature of “The Odyssey” is Odysseus’s homecoming—during which he slays a pack of extremely rude suitors who had been cour ng his wife. omeone once said half the ba le is just showing up. If that's half, then I say the other half is staying there once you do show up. A er about 25 years of touring as a comedi‐ an, I sure hope I'm right. I can't tell you how many mes I've wanted to give up but a er doing 2 shows today, one for my Church, then driving an hour away to do a B‐Day celebra on for a 74 year old, very nice lady, I can tell you, I always seem to be glad I chose to keep on going. I'm doing a speaking engagement in a li le over a week and the tle of this ar cle will be the tle of my speech. I want to share how I've been able to persevere through some very tough personal mes and career set‐backs as well. Here's some of what I'll be sharing to show people how to keep on keeping on. One way to stay in the game, no ma er what career you've chosen, is to diversify your tal‐ ents. This gives you more experiences, more knowledge and con nues your educa on. I was pre y much just doing stand‐up for the first 10 or so years on my journey, which is fine, but I felt I needed to do more in the entertainment field. I could see I needed to set myself apart from other comedians and

The Power of Persistence also use all of my talents. The first thing I did about 8 years ago is publish my first comedy book "Make Love not Warts". I found that ge ng interviews for radio, podcasts, blogs, websites, etc. became 1,000 mes easi‐ er when I added "Author" to my tle. As a result of all these interviews and network‐ ing with people, I got involved in Internet radio, which eventually led to my own radio show, then to a radio segment I do now called "BTS Entertainment Corner" on " What's the Story?" radio show and the publica on you're reading now. I'm not telling you this to brag, this is an example of what happened when I exercised an‐ other talent I have. I now have 3 books and I'm in talks about another one. I have also started spreading my ac ng wings over the last 5 years or so and as a result have 3 WEB TV series, some roles in Independent mov‐ ies, along with some voice over work as well. So diversi‐ fy you talents, especially those that compliment each other. Children Have Ears & Mouths! George reques ng, "Father, will you make the frog sound, Please!" The priest did not respond, but when another child about four or five asks him the same ques on, he was curious about the ques on and just a few moments later when a li le girl asked him again, "Father please make the frog sound!" He quickly asked her what she meant and why the ques on. "Well, Daddy has told us, "When you croak, we can all go to Disney Land!" Out of the mouths of babes, eh? A er coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the posi on of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Associa on and serving as Director of Physician Rela ons at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh re red in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

climax (which includes a number of female vic ms) debases the hero who, up to this point, seemed sympathe c and appealing. Of course, “The Odyssey” is a myth; a very ancient myth. Its truth is ar s c, so maybe one should not be too repelled by its various disagreeable elements (which include graphically depicted animal sacrifices). Homer’s work—“The Odyssey” and “The Iliad”—has been studied and analyzed and interpreted by scores of scholars and geniuses; going back to Aristotle, up to and beyond Nietzsche. Even so, no reader should feel in midated. Either epic on its own can be enjoyed simply as an adventure book. There are many transla ons of “The Odyssey”, but the one I have stuck with down through the years is Robert Fitzgerald’s. There is also a superb audio edi on of the same that is read by Dan Stevens. To hear Homer’s work rather than to read it has certain advantages, especially if one considers that oral versions might have preceded the wri en version. Whether that is so or not, I don’t know. What I do know is that this Greek classic deserves its lo y reputa on, and readers today might find in it, as I have, a great and personally meaningful literary experience.

ul mate goals and once you meet the right POSITIVE people, there's no telling where it can lead. The best way is to use your talents to help others, especially in your field. You can't help be li ed up, when you li up those around you. Network‐ ing online is great, but don't forget to get out in the real world as well. There's nothing like face me with others to help keep the dream alive. I'll start with a ques on for my next p. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a me! I've found most people, myself included, feel overwhelmed when they have a big task, project or even a big dream in front of them. This can lead to saying "I quit" before they even start. It's what I call "the big picture syn‐ drome". Break any project down into small part and the pressure goes away. I'll give you an example from the world of comedy. When I started, pu ng together a 5 minute set, that was funny, was one of the toughest things I had ever done. On top of that, I knew that to even get paid, I'd have to put together 15 minutes, then 30 minutes if I wanted to move up the ladder, then 45‐ 60 minutes if I wanted to make enough money to survive. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before re ring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fic on and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fic on is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. “View from LeRue”
If you’re an author, you may know that, often, publishers request only a few chapters of your book to consider for publishing. If you can wow them in those first pages and chapters, paint a good picture of your characters or in some way, grab them, you might get to the next step in consideration to publish your book. LeRue is not actively seeking submissions for fiction at this time, but we thought it might be an interesting twist for readers to see how a publisher might view books that are on the market reading just the first 3 chapters. In most cases, these are books that are self‐published, but not always. We hope you enjoy reading the “Vew from LeRue”.
Snow in April by Mary Mager Good introduc on to 15‐ year old Prince Jasper of Thisley in Chapter 1. Pleasant engaging tone. Appropriate for age‐group (middle grade). Could relate to the characters and the scenes. Within the first 3 chapters, Mager moves the story quickly introducing Concordia, the small town ruled by King Bartholomew and Queen Gabrielle, formerly the Princess of Thisley and best friends Olive and Toby. Snow in April is part of a series and Mager does a good job of providing background on the characters from the other books without rehashing them. If LeRue was looking for a book in this genre, we would request the full manuscript of Snow in April. Blast Radius by Ma hew Bayan What starts like a fast‐ paced, light‐hearted story quickly becomes a dark, spy novel. Billed as a Techno‐Thriller, I was surprised at the “Sam Spade” kind of character. Not to worry, Bayan does not disappoint fans who enjoy a darker, more sinister storyline. By the 2nd chapter, you’re in a penthouse in Tokyo with Butaro Korimawa, Scorpion Clan Daimyo (Overboss). Based on the graphic sugges ons in chapter 2, LeRue would not request the full novel because of our publishing guidelines and prac ces. That said, it does not mean that Blast Radius is not a well‐wri en novel. The story is engaging, the novel is fast‐ paced and if you love techno‐thrillers, this one is a good start.
A Debt of Survival by L.F. Falconer “The odor curled into a solid fist…” “The porch boards complained. “ Falconer sets the tone from the very beginning. Within the first few pages, you meet Sheriff Don La more and his undersheriff Wes Gundy. Pungent descrip ons make you feel as if you are in the room as La more is “waving his gray Stetson against the gathering flies”. Falconer did not tell you a thing! Every word shows you what’s happening and leads to the next character and event. A Debt of Survival, within the first 3 chapters, introduces enough events, characters and solid wri ng that if LeRue was looking for a manuscript in this genre, we would ask for the rest of the book. A Song of Forgiveness by Lillian Wolfe “Swish. Swish.” And you are transported to the Sierra Mountains cross country skiing near Reno, Nevada with Gillian and her skiing partner Ferris. Wolfe’s writing is subdued and suited for a slower more deliberate reading style. Wolfe introduces her cat Nygard and you know immediately that you’re reading a paranormal/fantasy novel as she explains how she returned to the Earth Plane to find him in a heap. Gillian and Ferris are also bandmates but seem to have a good friendship too. In the course of the story, it seems Ferris might be trying to move that friendship to the next level. A Song of Forgiveness is Book 4 of a series. If LeRue was in the market for this type of novel, we would ask for a rewrite to allow it to be more of a standalone.

End of the School Year Celebration with Superintendent Traci Davis
June 19, 2018 was a day of celebration for a small group of community women and Superintendent Traci Davis. Davis shared the goals for the future of the Washoe County School . During the question answer period, the group learned about the budget available, some of the immediate needs of the school system and how graduation rates have improved in the 2017-2018 school year. daun ng. I leaned to start joke by joke, con‐ nect them to each other so they made sense and make it all flow togeth‐ er. Breaking it down and building it back up again, helped so much. It's the same with those long drives. "How can you drive 10 hours then get onstage?" people ask. If you look at it like that, it seems very ring and stressful. I break the drive up in my mind, I think "Let's see, I le at 9am, so I'll see if I can make the NC border by noon." I try not to wear myself down with thinking of this huge, long drive, I break it down into segments. This keeps me fresh for the stage. If you're good at what you do, treat people well, explore new ways to use your talents and break the big jobs into smaller pieces, you may find that persistence has become your existence!!
