want to welcome Director/Producer Christopher Shawn Shaw to the BTS Entertainment Corner. Here's a little more about him first. Christopher Shawn Shaw is an Award-Winning Filmmaker who specializes in Film and Video Directing, Producing, Editing, Creative Consulting, Writing, and even Acting. He is also the Founder and Producer of the Night Of Comedy & Short Films FUNdraiser (NCSFF) production of high-quality, emptive film and video content AND help supplement the hosting church fellowships' yearly budget.

BTS: Hi Christopher, it was great to connect with you on LinkedIn so let's start there first. As a film maker how have you used social media to advance your career? Which is your favorite platform?

CSS: Social media has been monumentally instrumental, as it's how most the people I'm connected to even know I and my work exists. I met one of my longtime collaborators, Thor Ramsey, via Facebook, and I connected with a name actor who helped get our first featurelength film, CHURCH PEOPLE, off the ground via Twitter. LinkedIn is also a humongous opportunity to connect with like-minded people and/or people who need your expertise, some of whom are not on Facebook or Twitter. So, those are three of my favorites - Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Do you pick the projects or do they pick you? (That includes any you write yourself) CSS: I'm incredibly blessed to know and work with excellent writers, so I guess you could say I usually pick who writes, depending on the project and said writers' skillsets (and availability, of course). I'm a person of faith... I was going through a dark time around a decade ago, and I sensed the Lord was changing my heart... I realized I needed to laugh more. I had this subscription to ChristianCinema.com, so I

Christopher Shawn Shaw Award-Winning Filmmaker rented nearly all of their comedy selections in alphabetical order... and early in that queue was BANANAS DVDs, hosted by Thor Ramsey. I devoured them, watched the bonus features with the highlighted comics, and eventually connected with a number of them (e.g., Thor Ramsey, Michael, Jr., John Branyan, etc.) on Facebook. I would then send goofy Goldy The Goldfish videos I created to them, and - long story short - Thor saw a potential filmmaker to reach out to, as he had a script he wanted to get made. And that was one of the reasons we started doing 168 Film Projects together; he thought he should start connecting with filmmakers if he wanted to get his feature -length film made.

have a certain rule of thumb with respect to the great philosophers of the past: if one is interested in Plato, go directly to Plato; if one is interested in Pascal, go directly to Pascal; and so forth. This principle is grounded on the fact that the philosophers of old are almost always easier to understand and more enjoyable to read than their modern interpreters. I say “almost always” because when I tried to read Aristotle on my own, this is what I came up against: ‘Everything except primary substances is either predicable of a primary substance or present in a primary substance … Of secondary substances, the species is more truly substance than the genus, being more nearly related to primary substance...’ Huh? And yet I strongly suspected that this was more than gibberish and that it would be worth my while to get to know Aristotle’s philosophy. Eventually I read Mortimer J. Adler’s book, “Aristotle for Everybody”, and discovered that my instincts were correct.

In the Preface to this work, which was first published in 1978, the author identifies his intended audience: ‘When I say “everybody”, I mean everybody except professional philosophers; in other words, everybody of ordinary experience and intelligence unspoiled by the sophistication and specialization of academic thought.’

Adler divides the whole of Aristotle’s work into five parts: Man the Philosophical Animal; Man the Maker; Man the Doer; Man the Knower; and finally, Difficult Philosophical Questions.

In the first part, human beings are identified as “rational animals”. This designation is best summed up in Aristotle’s own words: ‘All men by nature desire to know.’

In other words, we are scientific by nature. Dogs and cats and birds do not wonder about the sky, for example; but

we do. Some people apply themselves to the science of astronomy more than the rest of us, but even small children will look at the moon and the stars and gape with wonder. In the second part, Adler focuses on “Man the Maker”, which has to do with the fact that humans produce practical things like tools or decorative things like cross-stitch patterns.

“Man the Doer” relates to ethical conduct. Man the Knower relates to the human capacity to gain knowledge, and also to the very nature of knowledge itself. God, infinity, eternity and the immateriality of the mind are considered in the Difficult Philosophical Questions.

Nearly everything that Aristotle deals with—logic, ethics, politics, etc.—pertains to matters which are already commonly known; but he explores each topic in depth.

Of course, one is free to learn directly from the great philosopher himself, though this might not be advisable if one also hopes to understand him. Instead, try Adler’s book, which is not only an excellent introduction to Aristotle, but an inexhaustible source of common sense philosophy in its own right— for virtually everybody.

John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt".

His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

that need funding, including a feature-length version of SKIP LISTENING. I've also expanded my network to include more than just comedy collaborators, and one of the writers and producers I'm working with; Jamie A. Hope, has a powerful short film script (story by Mark Stiles of Three Men and a Tenor) honoring our veterans, PEACE AT HOME, highlighting battles many face on the home front post-deployment. A number of veterans are participating in the film, including our lead actor (also a producer), Jerry Della Salla.

Jamie has a number of feature scripts I'm attached to as well, some revealing the supernatural realm, like ILLUSION, her novel we want to develop into a screenplay.

Another producer, Susan Shearer, and I have a supernatural short film script we collaborated on called FAMILIAR SPIRITS, about a widowed woman who believes she's being visited by the ghost of her recently-deceased daughter. This one addresses a popular and controversial phenomenon via a Biblical lens.

Susan and I also have a sequel (that Thor wrote) to our awardwinning mobster comedy short from last year, WIRELESS, that we're hoping to Crowdfund and shoot this year.

BTS: Short films are starting to gain more and more respect in and out of the industry. What are your feelings for the future for this type of film?

CSS: I love both short films and feature-length films, and there are so many versatile uses for short films. There are things you can leverage with shorts that you can't really leverage with features, namely time. People tend to be more inclined, online, to click on a short than a feature due to the fact that it's short. Shorts can be utilized as mini-films simply for the sake of storytelling, as well as icebreakers (Some pastors acquire shorts via Sermonspice.com to lead into the message), as well as advertising. The bottom line is our brains are wired for stories. Jesus Christ Himself told parables (short stories) to communicate what the Kingdom of God is like in the four Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!

BTS: As you spend more and more time behind the camera, do you have any advice for the new film makers out there?

What about those who are more experienced, we all should continue to learn.

CSS: There are so many things nowadays we can do and have access to (or know somebody who does), compared to, say, twenty years ago.

Filmmakers can acquire extremely inexpensive and quality digital cameras, as well as editing software. For crying out loud, there are feature films that have been made on (Continued on page 7)

re we in imminent danger from Global Warming?

Air so dense and laden with poisons in Los Angeles that daily sig-alerts are issued telling citizens to either stay inside or limit outdoor activity. Children required to wear masks to prevent exposure, yet suffering throat pain anyway. This was a daily occurrence in large cities around the world, not just in Los Angeles during the seventies.

Here’s another image. Dead fish lining the shores of streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. Piles of trash littering vacant lots.

Factory smoke stacks belching millions of metric tons of carbon and carcinogens into the air, clouding the skies to the point where the surface of the earth in these places were almost totally obscured from space. Pipelines leading directly from these factories delivering carcinogenic toxins like Benzine, Toluene and others to the same rivers used for drinking water by the masses. Songs were even written about rivers such as the Charles River in Massachusetts, where levels of Benzine and other cancerous chemicals cause extreme rates of child leukemias that were once considered rare.

This was reality during a time before the Environmental Protection Agency was born. Scientific motives were considered suspect because the goals of science were supposed to further business and mankind, not (Continued on page 10)

ell, let’s get real shall we? The Global Warming Scientist Ted Danson, you know, the lead in the sitcom Cheers, gravely told us that we would all be dead in ten years.

That was 1988. Hmmmmm! Wrong again! Al Gore (you remember the inventor of the internet) gave the planet only ten years in the early 90s. Wrong again!

I beg one question. Do the Elite really love us so much, that they have such a deep maternal concern for mother nature and all her children, that they are compelled to save us by saving the environment regardless of the cost? I love those guys.

Throughout history, when mankind has lost his connection to his Creator, he also has lost his identity. Man then finds something else to worship, usually it’s something he creates. It may be an idol made of wood, steel, stone , plastic, or a self made rock star, sports star, or even a political party or politician.

Today the Elite have created another distracting cause. It started out as global

limate change…this is certainly not a subject that we should worry about now.

Of course, we are going to experience climate change if history tells us anything. Scientists (and myself) know and expect the climate to gradually change as time goes by. History has a way of repeating itself. Climates work in cycles like most things in life. So I’m not surprised if the climate is changing. What surprises me is that we actually have as many people worried about this predictable event that we can’t control anyway. As far as the world ending in 12 years?

I doubt it. However, I do expect the world’s demise sometime in the future…just not in 12 years. How would the Democrats or anybody know that kind of information? If and when they start walking on water, then I’ll take them seriously; until then, I’ll stay relaxed and worry about more pressing items such as Socialism becoming the norm in our country.

But back to climate change. Didn’t the ice in the ice age melt off? Global warming?

Really? I don’t believe that we can credit that to mankind. Who do we blame for the extinction of the dinosaur then? Too many cows farting?

It’s absolutely incredulous! Plus, whatever the United States decides on doing does not guarantee that the rest of the world will follow

smartphones! Smartphones!! Nearly everybody reading this has a smartphone.

So, this is what I like to tell people - filmmakers, actors, cinematographers, composers, etc.... Unless God tells you otherwise, there are so many legitimate opportunities especially via the Internet and social media - to leverage both networking and getting your work out there... Therefore, create content with what and whom you have access to... and share your work. Most of the projects I'm attached to can be traced back to working on 168 Film Projects, attending and networking at the 168 festivals, and sharing the work online.

My current Director Reel, for example, is comprised entirely of 168 Film Projects... and you only know that because I just told you (or you're already familiar with those shorts). ;-) And for the seasoned pros... Remember, filmmaking is a collaborative, team effort. Your films don't look good merely because of you... it's also because of the team surrounding you. Take care of them and treat them well.

often hear, “I want to write about my life but I don’t know how to get started.” That’s when I whip out my little how-to book, YOUR LEGACY, and say, “Here, this has everything you need to get started . . . and finished . . . writing your stories.”

However, since you may not yet have YOUR LEGACY, you can start with a photograph. Look through your family albums and pick a photo that reminds you of what was going on at the time. It can be at any stage of your life, childhood, young adult, mature adult, et cetera. Just study the picture for a few seconds and let your eyes glaze over as you’re inundated with the memories: what was going on that day; the clothes you wore; who you were with; the place that photo was taken. A wealth of information is in that little photograph if you’ll just look for it. Write that story.

You could write your entire memoir that way, providing a photographic record to

I Don’t Know How to Get Started accompany your stories. YOUR LEGACY contains plenty of other memory joggers, in addition to over a hundred actual topics to remind you of your own personal experiences.

You’ll find, as you get started, that all sorts of memories that need to be written about will pop into your head, and you’ll have a blast writing them.

Don’t feel that your stories must be written in any particular order. Just write whatever comes to mind. You can organize them later. I suggest making a note –in a pocket-sized notebook or on your smartphone—as soon as a story idea occurs to you. If you’re like me, if you don’t write it down right away, you’ll forget about it and that story idea will be lost.

which is crucial for most people. #2: It provides an audience, which makes the memoir project more fun. #3: As you read your story aloud, it gives you a chance to hear how it sounds. #4: You might get some good feedback. #5: It’s great entertainment—the other members will share their stories too.

The main thing is, just start. Get yourself a blank page on a yellow pad or your computer screen. Dig out a photo album, pick a picture, and write something. Anything. You can always add to it or subtract from it later, but you can’t improve upon something that doesn’t exist. As the Nike ad says, Just do it!

“I’m runnin’ outa daylight,” she’s fond of saying. At 83, on the sunset side of life, Carol Purroy is speeding through her “to-do list.”

place limitations and higher costs on businesses. The EPA changed all that. With the help of Democrats and Republicans, they wrote legislation and Congress enacted rules that helped clean both the air and water, clean up toxic dump sites and hold corporations accountable for the damage they did to the environment. Some would argue, the rules didn’t go far enough, but they succeeded in making things better for the environment. By the end of the eighties, many toxic wastelands were being reclaimed for the better.

During the late sixties, a group of experts began warning of carbon pollution causing holes in the ozone layer, that layer that protects earth from the radiation from our sun.

They warned that at the current rates of emission, global warming would become a global catastrophe within the next three to five hundred years.

Their warning fell on deaf ears.

Now, at the end of the second decade of the new millennium, we watch as massive changes in our planet, the destruction of arctic permafrost, melting and breaking off of continent sized icebergs, global weather events so destructive, entire countries are decimated.

Yet, we continue electing corporatist leaders who acknowledge global warming, yet continue to undermine efforts to stop its destructive effect. The ongoing circus of the Trump administration dominates the news, while agency leaders quietly roll back the clean water and air acts that only modestly protect the health of Americans. This is the corporate answer to global warming. The current crisis is not just on Trump, the past five administrations have undermined efforts to curb Global Warming.

Can we stop Global Warming in time to save our planet and our existence? Scientists say maybe, but only if we take drastic action now. The global doomsday clock is now in low double digits. Scientists say we have ten years or less to act or our fates will be sealed. Ten years maximum.

People still deny reality despite the evidence they see in front of their eyes. The science is clear. The facts are clear. Prayers won’t help, only focused planning and action.

We were told that the record winter weather was in fact due to global warming. Nobody bought it, except college kids. So they renamed it climate change.

Gee, I’m no scholar or Rock Scientist, like Lindsey Lohan would say, but where I live, the climate changes at least four times a year.

That was a waste of paper, money and time! How about the Green New Deal masquerading as a climate change bill that contains provisions in it that chips away at our Constitution? Even the Senate Democrats decline to go on record for voting for something that stupid! Let’s get rid of cows, planes and oil? I’d rather ditch the Democrats since they seem to fart far more than cows…

Let’s get real people. The Democrats are clearly the party of liars, leakers and losers and this Green New Deal serves to reaffirm this idea. Only the deaf, dumb and blind might buy into this c***! My advice…wake up America and don’t become a victim of this misguided ideology! Have a nice day…
