The Cirque de Lescun - practicalities • All times given are for walking only, not for walking and picnicking.
• Always take extra clothing, even if it is a hot day. The weather can change
significantly, with time and with altitude*. • Make sure you have plenty of water. You should not top-up from rivers.
They may appear clean but, for all you know, there could be a dead animal in the water further up stream. On the other hand, there will always be good water at an occupied shepherd's “cabane”. • The emergency number in France is 112 . Some areas of the Cirque have a
mobile signal but you can’t count on it. • The big blond dogs kept by some shepherds are Patou. Their job is to guard
the sheep, and they can be fierce, so you should show them respect! • It can be very hot in the summer months, so take the usual precautions
and, if you don’t like the heat , make an early start in order to do the uphill bit before it gets too uncomfortable. • Some of the routes are within the boundaries of the Parc National des
Pyrenees. Their rules are well publicised on notice boards but they won’t be a
problem to any civilised lover of the mountains! • To find out how to get to the start of the walks please go to the section of
the introduction dedicated to this. * In the summer of 2011 two walkers died unnecessarily because they were not properly equipped. Having set off, on a hot day, to climb the Pic D’Anie in shorts and T-shirts , they became lost and benighted in a white-out. They died of exposure.
