LETTER FROM THE TEAM Have you been feeling melancholic? Experiencing pangs of loneliness and loss? Does listening to Ai Se Eu Te Pego trigger dance floor Bling Bling flashbacks with a seniorita twice your age?
You're not alone.
Psychiatrists call it the Post-MBA Blues. We didn’t make it up - It affects roughly 95% of all MBA students after graduation. If you ask the IESE doctor he’d probably prescribe an antibiotic for it. The Post-MBA Blues are a natural consequence of a constant supply of friends, tapas and bathroom parties evaporating into the pathetic reality of a 12 hours workday and hanging out with boring colleagues who you don't even particularly like. On the positive side, now that we’ve graduated we’re finally earning a salary and have been told that our livers will eventually function normally (except for Allan... your liver had pretty much kicked it by the end of first year). On that hopeful note, we're pleased to introduce the inaugural Class of 2013 annual MBA newsletter. In this edition we'll be covering the various news and events that have been happening in your region since graduation. Also included is a special feature on four start-ups that have come out of our talented class to date. So sit back and enjoy. Whether this newsletter will make your Post-MBA Blues better or worse is a bit of mystery. It could be a wonderful nostalgic voyage into the past. On the other hand it could be like going through a photo album of you and your ex while listening to a Adele album. Either way it's probably best enjoyed while sitting back sipping a cold Estrella. UPDATE FROM THE CLASS WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN BARCELONA? After finishing the MBA, a lucky handful of us got the opportunity to keep working in the Barcelona area in different sectors such as pharma, consulting, private equity, ecommerce and energy. These people as of now are: Aina, Amaia, Silvia, Clara, Helena, Alberto (Amor贸s), Ankit (Tibrewala), Varun, Chema, V铆ctor, Fan, Juan Alejandro, Juan (Donada), Pep, Sebastien, Roger, Benedikt, Felix, Daniel and Pedro. Despite people travelling on weekends and having busy work schedules, we have managed to frequently meet at restaurants, bars and clubs and reflect on their IESE experiences and their new jobs and post-MBA life.
In order to keep in touch, we use the "IESE 2013 Barcelona" Whatsapp group, where we permanently share jokes, organize stuff and discuss serious topics as the latest Barcelona FC results. Now that spring has come, and thus days are longer and weather is warmer, we will enjoy Barcelona as we did during the MBA, going to the beach, having some beers in outdoor "terrazas", drinking some gin tonics in Astoria, Sutton and Bling Bling or simply having a nice dinner at any of the hundreds of restaurants of the city. We invite ever ybody to visit Barcelona. Please if you come, let us know so we arrange a meeting somewhere.

Zank- a start-up created by Leonardo Ramírez, Oriol Chimenos and Luis Reig has just launched a peer-to-peer lending site in Spain. This model is gaining traction all around the world and the founders believe it is the seed of tomorrow’s banking. For those who slept through classes and are unfamiliar with peer-to-peer lending, it is a way for investors to lend money to selected borrowers for personal loans. Investors typically receive interests that double or triple those offered by bank deposits. At the same time, by lending small quantities to hundreds of borrowers, the default risk is under control. Borrowers also receive better interest rates due to our low cost structure.
The team have called their initiative “zank”, a mixture of bank + thank, in an effort to give a human touch to what banks have been doing for ages: using investors’ money to lend it to others. Says Luis Reig, a founder “At this moment in the life of our company we are backed by two valuable advisors and investors. On one side we have Plug&Play, a Silicon Valley company that already supported the early years of companies like Dropbox or Lending Club. On the other side, one of the most innovative marketing companies in Spain, SCPF.” “We are focused on our strategy to bring creditworthy borrowers to our platform and will continue to provide a transparent, simple and convenient way for investors to earn more out of their money.” “We invite you to visit www.zank.com.es and try it out.”

Alvaro de la Maza has founded InfraPPP World and is leading a team developing an online platform focusing on privately financed infrastructure projects and Public Private Partnerships. The team is developing a Project database which already has more than 900 privately financed infrastructure projects and is focused on M&A transactions related to the infrastructure sector and all relative to infrastructure investment funds. Says Alvaro: “We have more than 200 corporate and individual clients and we are adding the third person to our team in the next days. We just closed 90 % of the content, we made it available only to paid subscribers and we are accelerating new client acquisitions. The platform aims to be a point of reference for infrastructure investors, financier, developers and advisors. For more information, see their website: http://infrapppworld.com/

Late last year Jeroen Kemperman and his start-up Treevo announced that they had closed the first “All Saints” funding round in Spain raising a total of €150K in funding from “Saints” that bring a total of 100+ years of experience to Treeveo. Treeveo is a web-based strategy execution platform with clients like Canon España. According to Jeroen, the Treeveo Pyramid interface makes projects easier to grasp. Treeveo’s interface simplifies project management, including the ability to know what needs to be done, who is responsible for different portions of the project, and how each part contributes to the whole. This allows project managers the ability to easily delegate elements of a project. A project owner can assign ownership of a sub-project to another project participant with a quick action. All of this is displayed on the dashboard for easy management of everyone involved. As part of its All Saints funding round, Treeveo raised €150K from 6 investors in tickets of €25K.
For those unfamiliar with the “All Saints” model- traditionally, start-ups seeking investment in the range of €50K-€250K would do so by approaching one or two business angels. This however, can take a lot of time. Entrepreneurs using the “All Saints” method deliberately seek to raise capital in smaller tickets from a larger number of investors: “The Saints”. The “All Saints” method (which we discovered here) has a number of advantages. First, smaller tickets allow more people to invest. This way the entrepreneurs can cast a wider net when seeking potential “Saints”. Second, a larger number of investors bring a lot more expertise and a wider network to the startup. The process behind an “All Saints” round is standardized with a simple shareholders agreement that is normally finalized early in the investment process. The final advantage therefore is…Speed, since smaller investors and a more standardized process result in quicker fundraising. The “All Saints” method of fundraising could be viewed somewhere between crowd-funding and traditional angel investment. Only a few rounds have been made in Europe and Treeveo’s round is the first in Spain.

Paulo and Miguel Rocha co-founded Fototea last July and were selected for the 9th intake of Start-Up Chile accelerator. Fototea is a platform that sells services related to photography, video production and audiovisual editing to individuals or companies. With this business model, Fototea’s ambition is to disrupt the consumer and business photography market as well as the video editing and production markets – estimated to be €41bn and €32bn respectively, worldwide.
“We are a two-sided platform that connects a group of talented, up and coming artists, or service providers, with individual or business consumers that desire to have an event, a moment or a product captured”. Fototea’s platform will allow clients to describe and post their project/event/ product needs for which they will receive bids by members of our artist database. Customers will then choose a photographer, or service provider, who will fulfill the project. Once it is finished customers will release payment of which Fototea will take a fee.

Tattva is a sanskrit word which means “vital essence of the elements”. For the founders of Tattva- this is precisely their philosophy of life; the only way to create real and lasting changes in everything is by reaching the essence of what you want to impact. That vision lead Juan Pablo Diez (IESE) and Felipe Cisternas (Juan Pablo’s childhood friend) to create a network of 3 interrelated companies: a consulting company specialized in occupational health, safety and quality of life at work; a training company focused on the same topic and a medical center with specializing i n k i n e s i o l o g y, c h i r o p r a c t i c , acupuncture and massage therapies. The medical center treats
patients daily, and has by itself generated create enough free cash flow to fund the growth of the consulting and training subsidiaries. The consulting arm of the business will focus on the mining industry - which is one of Chile’s largest industries and has the strongest focus on occupational health and safety (due to the inherent risks in the nature of the work). Says Juan Pablo: “We we are proud to announce that we started our first big project with a mining company. The project will impact 700 workers, ie, 700 families, and we are participating in three important lender processes. Our goal is to become the Latin american leader in the industry in the next ten years”.
