My name is Lesley Drouin, I am Spanish and American. In 2008, I decided to attend a course of Graphic Design, equivalent to the secondary, in“ Escola Artística e Profissional Árvore”, Porto, Portugal. During my two years of studies, and lately, while concluding the third year, I have done many projects for the school, some of which were included in international and national competitions, for instance: ESN, Anespo, TNSJ and “Retrato”. I have also made many drawings conveying messages with forms, with the objective of breathing these ideas into life.. Enjoy and “Bon Apetit”!

For this project, we were asked to create three packages (a prototype, a display, and a kit) for the product that was invented in the last proposal, “Chás Aroma”. After several sketches, I came up with the idea for each package. For the prototype, I created four packages, for each flavor of fruit (strawberry, kiwi, raspberry and orange), with the form of a tea cup. Each of these packages has an illustration of a tree growing from the cup with the respective fruit. Basically, it is the essence of the tea growing the ingredients. This way I am able to represent the different types of tea in each package, using the appropriate color of each fruit. I also use a spiral as part of the illustration in the packages, labels and teabags in order to be coherent with the symbol of “Chás Aroma”. For the kit, I made an illustration with the same basis as the prototype, but this time the tree contains all the ingredients. Inside the kit I made five boxes, one for each flavor, and an extra box for a t-shirt. I also made four leaflets that give out information about the tea (one for each ingredient). For the display I made a replica of the illustration showing the essence of the tea growing the ingredients, but this time, it will be growing the prototype packages. I used fimo clay to create the form of a tea cup with a spiral on top of it, painted with Chinese ink, also using wires to make the tree. All this with the intention of being coherent with the prototype and also the kit. 36

This project, during the 2nd year, was involved in the competition for the creation of the logotype for ESN ( European School Network). The idea of my logotype is to convey a certain connection between all the European schools, and for that reason, the “E”, “S” and “N” are

connected with one another. The target audience are the students, so I chose a typography which has a playful expression to it and by using the circle it is also possible to play with it, for example, using it as a sign post. To support this concept I created a poster and a leaflet explaining how the logo works.

Intervention

Bodoni

For this project, accomplished during the 3rd year, we were asked to pick a typography and develop an intervention and a site. Bodoni is the typeface I chose to work with. Giambattista Bodoni during his life created a book known as “the typographic manual”, and his wife, Margarita Dall’agilio, published the book five years after he passed away. The type Bodoni was created between the Neoclassical and Romantic time, the age of Enlightment. So the type is very influenced by the time it was made in, as you can see, it holds many neoclassical characteristics, for instance, it is very symmetrical and pure, with thin and thick contrasts very consciously structured. Many revolutions occurred during this Neoclassicism period. After researching and brainstorming, I decided to make many characters representing Giambattista Bodoni and Margarita Dall’Agilio. The characters were constructed using the type Bodoni itself, creating a certain dynamism by positioning the letters in many ways, thus representing the time of revolutions, of movement, using classical expressions. For the intervention, I chose to make a book holding some information about Giambattista Bodoni and the type Bodoni, using the characters throughout the book. I created a small timeline explaining some aspects of Bodoni and the typographic manual that also was inserted in the book.

45 Poster (A3)

Change

For this project, which was made during the 2nd year, we were asked to create a poster, with the theme “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”, conveying the concept by simply using a typography and creating a pangram. The message I want to give here is that the human beings are destroying Nature and, because of this fact, things should change and we should take a bigger responsibility upon our actions. For the poster I invented a typography by getting together broken sticks to give the idea that we are destroying Nature. I also used an illustration with many branches of a tree, also conveying the same idea, making it more coherent to the form of the typography that was created. I used a black pen to give that same idea of Nature that is rotting, therefore, dying. Finally, for the pangram, I came up with a phrase that has to do with the theme. The words “Change” and “World” are the ones that call the most attention to the poster, because it is basically the point I am trying to make with this concept... The world has to change.

Renaissance

Renaissanse This project, proposed in the 2nd year, involved the whole class, so we were divided in five groups. I worked with Chelsea Drouin and Tatiana Costa, and we were asked to make an illustration for the book which would have three chapters and the poster. We came up with the idea of making a geometrical shape of the plant of the center of the church, which then we divided in four, and three of those divisions would contain an illustration from each member of the group, having to do with this theme. As for the fourth division, we used it to insert the information of the exhibition of this project, in the school library.

Ilustração do poema “Retrato” de Nuno Júdice

“Retrato”

“Retrato” This Project, given in the 1st year, entered a competition with the objective of making illustrations for the book “Pedro lembrando Inês” by Nuno Júdice. Every student had to pick one poem and create an illustration according to the concept of the chosen poem, which in my case was “Retrato”. I thought that the poem “Retrato” described a magical scenario, because in his poem he mentions one moment where he describes Pedro pulling Inês out of the frame that was trying to take her away. So my idea was based on that moment, where I decided to use an optical art style to give it the impression of agitation and magic.

Words

Words This is a proposal from the 1st year, in which we were given a variety of words, from which we could not pick more than three. The idea was to illustrate the word itself. I chose the words insect, freedom and cat. For the first poster I chose the word insect. The idea was to use forms of insects and transform them into letters. I used tertiary colors, which have warm and cold colors, to represent all the different emotions that insects can reflect on us. For the second poster, I chose the word freedom. With this word I tried to transmit the idea of letting go of a butterfly in a trapped room through a window leading you to the great outdoors. I used tertiary colors in order to represent the dark and the bright side. I also used the garden filled with colors to give the sensations of peace and tranquility with warm colors, and the human being freeing the butterfly, trapped in a small dark room, are the cold colors. As for the typography, I had the intention of making it coherent with the outdoors. Finally, the last word I chose was cat, which I found interesting because it reminded me right away of a national animal symbol of Egypt, which was once considered a god. So I created an illustration which contains a cat with the form of a human body following Egyptian ideas, for instance, the structure of the forms usually are just showing one side of the face and the full body. The cat is situated in a temple, with statues with the form of mummy crates with a cat’s face. The typography I created had the purpose of being coherent with the temple’s walls.

Sensorial map For this proposal, in the 1st year, we were asked to reflect a moment of a field trip we had in Lisbon and creating a sensorial map. The moment I chose to illustrate for my sensorial map represents two sides, the dark side and the bright side, with a road that will lead you to one side or the other. The dark side is representing the atmosphere inside the city of Lisbon, and the bright side represents the atmosphere that is apart from the city, Nature. This is one moment we had in the field trip, which took place around lunch time.

Poster (A3)

Densmore

For this proposal, given in the 1st year, the purpose was to pick a typeface to create a poster having to do with something related to the typeface the student had picked. I chose the font Densmore, which is the typeface that the 60’s band “The Doors” used for themselves, which is why it is better known as the font of “The Doors” instead of Densmore, even though that is its true identification. So, I developed my idea from this fact and invented a concert advertisement for “The Doors”. The advertisements of their concerts were usually published with Jim Morrison, the name of the band and the date, place and price of the concert. The background color of the posters in those days were usually yellow, which is why I chose this color. The words that are black contain the information of who, when, where and the price of the ticket. The words in green give out lyrics of some of their songs, and indicate the type of music they play.

Carry The energy to change, to make a difference. Being different is realizing that everyone is the same. Being the same is thinking you are different. Be different, and realize how everyone is the same.

146

147

Grass People Life expressing itself through different forms. It is shining through. Forms are what creates the illusions from what actually is real. Realize, look beyond the form, the truth that lies within. See the form, do not judge it, for it is not the truth, life is. Every being on this planet is one living organism within the universe. At the deepest level of being, you are one with all that is.

148

149

Enlightment Enlightment is the truth that will make you free. Free of self, free of illusion created by self, free of fear which are the results of the illusions created by self, and free of sin, which is the suffering you unconsciously conflict on yourself and on others as long as this illusion of sense of self controls what you think say and do, making us believe that we are nothing more than our mind and phisical body.

Long Way ....one step at a time.

154

155

Wind We cannot see the wind, but we realize it is there, because we feel it. The wind sometimes blows itself against sand, rain, or even snow, creating many forms, it is infinite!...But the wind will always be the wind, even though when blown against the sand, the rain or the snow, it might take its form but we still realize it is wind simply expressing itself through different forms. The stronger the wind is, the more sand, rain or snow it will take, but the sand, the rain and the snow will not be blown with the wind forever, it will end. But the wind will continue blowing, and the cycle will go on, whenever it cruises through sand or water, again the wind will be expressing itself through a different form.

Perspectives You will only see what you want to see, unless you choose to have a choice. See what lies beyond all identifications, the realization of the truth to unfold the universe. The noise or the silence, something or nothing, destruction or creation.

166

Words The words we may use sometimes may not make much sense, but still there is always a point that will lead you to the truth. For example, this composition is filled with letters with no direct meaning, but beyond those forms, the idea was to explain how letters and words can get mixed up all the time leading to no purpose, creating misunderstandings.

Let it Rise Turn the lights off, for I am no longer blind, through the forms I see the real truth that reveals inside, expressions are only real when they are coming from emptiness, nothing exists, and it is the only true joy you will find. Presence is the key to reveal the “secret. Seek for it and you will realize.

172

173

Realize You must change yourself before changing the world. Let us free ourselves from our own thoughts, so we can give. Take a look out of the window and see what is out there.

174

Philosophy The timeless dimension, the nothing of all things. I believe that the only limitations that exist are from the mind itself, the egoistic identified self, that has the tendency of keeping us from seeing the “now”, only holding images from the past which creates images trying to project the future. If there is a problem, it would be the

part of not realizing it. But it is there. Problem or not, it is not life, just a life situation. Now, with this peace in our hands, the question is what are we going to do with it, and how are we going to use it. But before anything else, we must realize. There is probably too much noise, it is considered normal in society, it always has been. Let us say it is the unconsciousness imperfection. What about silence? I do not mean something, I mean nothing, peace. Our thoughts have their dark side and also the bright side. One cannot exist on ones own, if not there would not be such a thing as balance. But one thing is true, light can always see dark but dark can never see light. Be conscious of the “consciousness” and “unconsciousness”. If you are one of those points, you will not see the other one because you became one of them. If you see the points then you will be free to choose. How can you read the book if you are the book? But it exists so there must be a reason for it being there and maybe it

is because they are connected to one another, so that means that whatever our state of mind is in, it does not me and you have to be in it too, instead there is the choice to be the silent watcher. We are never alone, it just tricks you in believing that you are it, it uses you, completely controls everything you do and say. But we are the ones who unconsciously created it. That just tells us the we have the ability to dissolve it. Nothing makes sense, with nothing there exists space and in between that space there is always the possibility to create something. But if there was not anything there, there would not be space, and if there is no space there cannot be something. So if you are something, then you are nothing, and nothing is everything and that is how everything is connected to one another. The forms are what creates the illusion of separation. If we were alone, then we would not exist in the first place, but we do exist, therefore we are. Nothing, peace, stillness, silence. It is all coming from the same source, the essence of our being. Then again, do not pay too much attention to the words for they are just

signposts trying to point out to you to the truth that lies within and without.

Interests Lately I have been reading books from Eckhart Tolle, “The Power of Now” and “New Earth”. He introduced me to the moment called “now”, the timeless and everlasting dimension. In one of his books he mentions that “Only if you are able to be conscious without thought can you use your mind creatively, and the easiest way to enter that state is through your body. Whenever an answer, a solution, or a creative idea is needed, stop thinking for a moment by focusing attention on your inner energy field. Become aware of stillness. When you resume thinking it will become fresh and creative.” This made me realize by doing, you are creating, and when creating you are connecting with being and then you will see the results of true evolvement. In the area of Design I mostly interested in illustration. 176

177

Experiences involving graphic design I had the opportunity to visit a Graphic Company called “Norprint”(www.norprint.pt), in the first and also in the second year. On the 11th October, we participated in an AGI Open 2010 (www.agiopen2010.com) a conference for young students with the theme “Process is the Project”, where many international designers shared their approach to the creative process through a series of presentations that map out their own personal channels of inspiration and methods of research and execution. The designers that were part of the presentation were: Lizá Ramalho and Artur Rebelo, Paula Scher, Abbott Miller, Henrik Kubel, Marian Bantjes, Ahn Sang-Soo, Peter Knapp, Sara Fanelli, Pierre Bernard, Cyan, Stefan Sagmeister, Bruno Monguzzi and Michael Bierut. The designer, typographer and artist Ahn Sang Soo is whom I chose to talk about for the report asked by the Graphic Design teacher after analysing the conference. Ahn Sang Soo started off by asking the audience to cover their right eye to add to a collection of photographs that he has been doing for years, and then began the presentation by mentioning a sensorial map he created from his trip since Korea until the arrival in “Casa da Música”, showing us this way, how his life situation is Graphic Design, it is the process of the project itself. He demonstrated some of his typographic work. Ahn Sang Soo was able to make a typeface from pure creation, no past and no future reference. His typefaces have radical visual impacts. After many years, he was able to

During the 2nd year, each student had to do an internship for three weeks in a studio, which in my case was in “Indigo Design”, for aproximately 120 hours. The internship ocurred between the 25th of February and the 19th of March 2010, in Porto. The schedule was of 8 hours per day, from 10 a.m. until 19 p.m. My monitor for the internship was Marta Borges, communication designer and CEO of the company. During the process of internship I was asked to do two projects: the book “Ponte 4 de Abril”, where it was necessary to convert all the photographs to CMYK, do the color correction(final arts), redimention the images, applying the correct dimensions and insert them in the approved location; a graphical image for the International Day of Children’s Books festival, that would adapt to the proportion of a poster, and the execution of bookmarks . In the company “Indigo”, Marta Borges and Rita Abrunhosa Mendes work as graphic designers. During those three weeks of intership, I elaborated the projects that were asked successfuly, concluding with 102 photographs, using, as a digital tool, Adobe Photoshop 5.0. This book was promoted by the construction companies “Mota Engil” and “Soares de Costa”, having an editorial coordenation by Barbara Azenero. This book is about the new bridge on top of the river Catumbela in Angola. The content of the book is about the story and surroundings of the province of Catumbela, and the process of the construction between the years of 2007 and 2009.

revolutionize it (the traditional Hangul, the Korean alphabet) into a functional medium for today, with all its digital demands and interpretations. You can play with this typeface and make so many different words using different positions and rotations (3000 characters were made), sometimes it is not very possible to understand the meaning for having too much meaning to it, and therefore he is able to show the nothing. The design was such a success that it gave rise to a whole new form of expression in Korea and its creator was recognized for his work nationally. There are many examples of his work when he redesigned the Korean alphabet, Hangul, by creating new typographic characters. An underground magazine, in which he addresses art and culture, is one of the examples of the use in typography. Ahn also represented a poster about the Bomb fishes. This poster is very interesting as the words are spread throughout the whole page. The concept of the poster has to do with an unreasonable situation that is actually happening, there is no reason for this to happen, all it points out to is the unconsciousness imperfection. So if this situation is not understandable, because there is no reason for it as it is completely illusionary, so are these unreal fish. If the situation is happening so the fish are also real. He mentions “If fish are happy then we are too”. All life is connected to one another so we depend on our lives to sustain everyone else’s lives. Another project that he showed to us was a logotype he created for life and peace. This logotype has a very interesting structure, also having to do with the circulation of life, nothing is not separate of anything. He is a poet of a visual medium.
