Community

Our programs help moms-to-be in the Central Valley Division have fullterm pregnancies and healthy babies.

We advocate for programs that help moms in the Central Valley Division get care and services to improve their health and the health of their babies.

Research

We research the serious problems that threaten our babies and work on treating and preventing them.

Our websites provide the latest pregnancy health information in English and Spanish. Health experts provide personal answers to moms’ questions.

Support

Through our online community and in hospitals in the Central Valley Division, we offer information and comfort to families with a newborn in intensive care.

In the Central Valley Division…

Advocacy In 2012, March of Dimes co-sponsored Assembly Bill (AB) 1731, which was signed into law and requires hospitals to perform a simple test to screen all newborns for critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). Children with CCHD have a life-threatening condition that requires intervention, such as surgery, in the first few hours, days or months of life. This screening will save lives by identifying CCHD as soon as possible so infants can get the treatment they need. As a result of this legislation, all hospitals in California will be required to screen newborns for the 31 ‘core’ disorders that threaten newborn health, as recommended by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. In 2011, March of Dimes successfully sponsored AB 395, which added Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), commonly known as “bubble boy disease”, to the California Newborn Screening Panel. Research Funding

In California, there are 41 active research grants funded by the March of Dimes, totaling over $8 million.

California receives more March of Dimes research funding than any other state. We fund cutting-edge research at California’s most prestigious institutions, including Caltech, Stanford, UCLA, UCSF and USC.

Nationally, there are 334 active research grants funded by the March of Dimes, totaling over $71 million. The scientists that we fund are working on projects including: determining whether sufficient levels of vitamin D help to protect against infection-related preterm birth, identifying how gene regulation errors may lead to heart defects and developing a possible treatment for congenital bone defects.

March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine In 2011, March of Dimes and Stanford University launched the nation’s first trans-disciplinary research center dedicated to identifying the causes of premature birth. The center brings together specialists in disciplines ranging from neonatology and genetics to computer science and artificial intelligence. The March of Dimes contributed $2 million toward the project’s launch and will provide support through 2020. Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait Babies aren’t fully developed until at least 39 weeks in the womb. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, a baby’s major organs, like the brain, lungs and liver are still growing. Babies born just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness compared to full-term infants. Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait is the March of Dimes public awareness campaign to let women and health care providers know that if a pregnancy is healthy, it is best to wait for labor to begin on its own, rather than schedule an induction of labor or a cesarean section. For professionals, we encourage participation in quality improvement initiatives, such as implementing the Elimination of Non-medically Indicated (Elective) Deliveries Before 39 Weeks Toolkit, which was developed by the California Chapter in collaboration with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative and the California Department of Public Health. Many hospitals in the Valley Division are implementing the Toolkit and receiving direct technical assistance from March of Dimes and our partners.
