the art of analysis Sun up. Clock chimes. Eyes open: The first thing we see is numbers. Every day, dawn to dusk, a steady march of data is on parade. Productivity. Risk. Consumption. Statistics map the human experience, explaining our history, shaping our decisions and predicting our future. They help gauge progress and determine success. They track the health of our bodies and economies. Conventional wisdom prizes quality, not quantity — but even quality must be measured. Statistics create context. Build insight. Drive growth. Foster innovation. Propelling us forward, they reveal a fundamental truth: Numbers are the engine that makes the world spin.

statistics + opportunity At the University of California, Irvine, statistics can take you anywhere. Our Department of Statistics, housed on campus in the renowned Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences, is young, nimble and forward looking. Founded in 2002, the department offers the energy and excitement of a start-up enterprise, joining students and faculty in a common purpose: to interpret and understand the world.
We fully fund tuition and fees for most of our doctoral students, and we also provide a monthly stipend for their work as teaching assistants or graduate student researchers. But resources are only part of the story. With the flexibility to design their own focus and a commitment to maintaining an intimate, tight-knit community, we enable students to access a range of opportunities limited only by their own imagination.
Crossing boundaries
Why size makes success
We offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics — and we foster inquiry in a unique and multifaceted way. At UCI, students embrace an emphasis on openness, approaching the study of statistics through an interdisciplinary lens. Grounded in problem-solving and hands-on analysis, they pursue answers to real-world challenges touching nearly every field of endeavor — from genetics to psychology, astronomy to sports, computer science to medicine.
As statisticians, we know the power of big numbers to overwhelm. Our program is a place where students and faculty are on a firstname basis; where distinguished professors are also tutors, mentors and friends. We believe this kind of informal atmosphere fosters creativity and sparks new ideas. Most Ph.D. students spend their first two years completing coursework and getting to know department faculty before choosing an advisor — part of a philosophy

The faculty difference Department of Statistics faculty are known as much for their warm collegiality as they are for their internationally recognized expertise. Their pathbreaking work is harnessing statistics to expand knowledge and reveal possibilities across the biological, physical and social sciences. Around the globe, researchers, industries and governments turn to statisticians at UCI for far-reaching analyses that change the way we live.

Statisticians: essential to society Statisticians collect data on subsets of a population (known as “samples) to extrapolate information about the whole population, yielding knowledge that can, among other things, answer pressing questions, improve the quality of goods or services and inform strategic decision making. Whether we are studying the safety of nuclear power plants; evaluating the environmental impact of pollution; determining the effectiveness of new drugs; assessing consumer demand for products; planning and analyzing agricultural experiments; or utilizing data in countless other ways, statisticians are essential to strengthening societies and helping individuals thrive.

advanced statistical training to influence a broad spectrum of disciplines, is central to what sets UCI apart. Our department is fertile ground for nontraditional thinkers interested in using statistics to engage the wider world, investigating social, business or policy problems and exploring game-changing solutions. From its earliest days, UCI has built a reputation for cultivating collaboration, a commitment shared by Department of Statistics leadership, faculty and students. We believe in working across disciplines: nurturing out-of-the-box partnerships, across academia and beyond, that recognize the potential of statistics to educate, illuminate and inspire — to unite people from all walks of life in a shared quest for prosperity and progress.
